Dwelling close beside the sandal, the bamboo knew not its greatness, while the far-off trees were made fragrant by its scent. In the pool the frog knew not the way of the lotus, while the bee was enchanted by its honey. In the holy Ganga the crane knew no secret at all, while the pilgrims, coming for the pilgrimage's sake, were made fair. So, dwelling near, I, empty of the Guru's teaching, while the far-off stranger took it deep into his heart.

The peerless Form — how shall my mind hold it in thought? This eye is not lovely, that would look on the Beloved. The tongue is not sweet — how shall I speak my petition? There is no awareness in the ears to hold the words. Every limb is wanting, wretched — how shall I make the fair garland? There is no fortune on my brow, that I might wash the Beloved's feet. There is no servant-nature in me; I cannot reach the service; there is no trust in me — how shall I be gathered into the Lord's greatness?

The harlot's finery and lewdness have no far shore; without a husband, whose wife is she to be called? The crane's body is white, yet it kills and eats so many lives; holding its silence, fixing its meditation, it finds no way at all. The bully's bullying and evil cannot be told; utterly brazen, it shrinks not, feels no shame. So is my threefold sin — coveting another's body, another's wealth, and slandering — many are my basenesses; they reach not to a single pore of Yours.

He who has many beloveds, and one loved more than one — in whose house is the full wedded joy, and the rivalry of co-wives; she who, sulking, her pride broken, dwells parted in a far land, caught in the ache of separation, the yearning bride; and she, cold and slack, who could not win the Beloved's delight, and is given the widowhood, and named the forsaken one — I am wanting in eye, ear, tongue, hand, in every limb, having neither touched nor seen nor heard — what, then, is my name?

As no one at all sees the adulterer and the thief, yet thief and adulterer know that all the elements see; as, at day's end, coming and going through the house, one enters that very house wary in the dark; as the righteous soul beholds the Judge of dharma as righteous, while the sinner sees the terror of death and cries for rescue — so the True Guru, without enmity, is of the nature of a mirror: he shows you the very face you turn to him, just as it is.

As, in a straight mirror, one sees a clear straight face, and, looking with it reversed, sees the face made dreadful; the sweet word from that same tongue seems dear and loving, and hearing a bitter word strikes the heart like an arrow; as eating grain makes the body strong and the mouth taste sweet, while drinking opium brings on a graveyard misery — so the nature of the servant and the slanderer, like the chakvi and the chakor: the True Guru, even-souled, forbearing, is like the sun to both.

As the rain-bird cries 'Beloved, Beloved,' watching for the drop, so the faithful wife keeps the vow of faithfulness to her lord. As the moth, seeing the lamp alight, burns in the flame, so the loving one keeps love's vow to her Beloved. As the fish, drawn from the water, dies at once of the heat, so the yearning bride wastes her body in the ache of parting. She is called the loving, faithful one by her vow of love — but in her doing, among a million, rare is such a woman.

Countless the peerless forms, yet none is the equal of that Form; a million million nectars are no match for the sweet word. Over a million wishes of dharma and wealth I would cast that glance; over the many liberations, that gentle smile. Endless heavens, a million — a little touch of that meeting, the whole ocean of joys of that union does not weigh against it. Before the glory of love's savour nothing comes near — body, mind, wealth, my all, I make an offering.

The undeceivable, unpierceable Lord, in whose power is the strength of the universe — by what art have you brought Him under love's sway? Shiva, Sanak and their brothers, Brahma and the rest cannot hold His meditation — with what adornment, O friend, do you hold your gaze on Him? Countless scriptures and Shesh-Nag repeat His fame — by what good office do you sing His praise? The Master whom gods and men and lords search for and find no track of — for what love does He go searching after you?

Tell — what wealth of devotion, in some former birth, what fierce and hard austerity did you perform, that in virtue, form, and deed, in every art, you are made supreme, and have taken the beauty of all beloveds? The Life of the world, the Lord of the world, the Wish-jewel, His face smiling, has stolen your heart with a look. Over a million forms is His beauty; over a million beauties His grace; over a million cleverness I would offer up. Over a million knowledge and virtue He casts His virtue and knowledge; over a million fortunes I lay down my fortune in offering. Over a million good qualities and marks, His goodness; before a million modesties my modesty stands abashed. Over love itself and faithfulness are her love and her faith — the one on whom the Lord casts even the least glance of grace.

Blessed the birth, and blessed this day of days — the night, the watch, the auspicious moment, the hour and the instant won! Blessed the adornment, the fair union of the bed, the courtyard and the chamber grown exceeding lovely! The sparkling light, the grace, the fame and majesty and beauty, the bliss, the poise, the ocean of comfort swelling! Wealth, dharma, desire, release — the desireless Name, love's savour — for my Beloved, the relisher of it, is come.

The night does not wane, nor does the moon's lamp-light fade, nor the flower's fragrance die, nor the custom of the service. The talk of poise does not lessen — the ears, the awareness, the mind, the tongue's touch — all merged, steeped in the savour. No sleep comes, and no weariness enters the heart at this hour of union with the Unseen, the Unknowable. The heart's longing swells fourfold, the vow of love grown strong, and mercy springs up tenfold, of the merciful Lord.

Instant by instant it stretches to the length of a whole night; moment by moment it spreads out to a full month long. Year upon year it passes, hour after hour, and the beloved night is like age upon age of watches. A million times more precious than the moon's own sparkling light, love's savour holds a strong and sovereign majesty. In thought and word and deed I stay face to face in the Beloved's service — let no weariness come, no sleep: today is my turn.

As is the autumn night, so is the full-orbed moon; and so is the couch of flower-petals I have spread. As is the bloom of youth, so is the peerless Form; and so is the fair adornment, rich in every grace. As are the lovely eyes, so are the honeyed words; the one and the other shine — a glory beyond measure. As my Beloved is skilled, dear, a relisher of love, so am I too, wondrously loving, His darling.

The day the world spoke slighting of the mind's service, angered — a million yogas and rites are not its equal; the day one became the water-drawer of the Lord of the worlds — no canopied king of a million millions is like her; the day one became the grinder of grain for the Life of the world — wealth, dharma, desire, release are the servants of her servants: the joy of the sprinkler, the water-drawer, the grinder — the beloved lover's joy — is beyond all telling and weighing.

Hour by hour the watchman's gong calls out the message; watch by watch, again and again, he gives you to understand: as, filling and filling with water, the boat goes under, so, filled full with sins, your vessel is being drowned. On every side the sentinels have cried themselves hoarse; all four watches you sleep, unwaking — has the fool no shame? At the cock's crow he opens his eyes, and — the savour of the Beloved's love unwon — he sits repenting after.

The clean bathing-cloth, the collyrium, the betel's relish, the ornaments, the adornment, the couch spread out; the flower's fragrance, and within the lovely chamber, the lamp alight, its sparkling light poured everywhere; searching and searching the omens, coaxing the ascendant, the longed-for order given — after long delay, your turn has come. And in that rare and priceless hour, the base one, lost in sleep — the eyes opening at the last, sits repenting after.

The hollow of the hand fills with water — youth enters, O friend; put away pride, and honour the love and delight of the Lord of life. Like a city of vapour in the sky, the night is passing away; know this rare, priceless hour to be most hard to win. On the couch the flower withers and wilts, and again and again you repent — the season come does not come back if you send it away. That fine bride is the mistress, the beloved of the Beloved's love — understand, wise one: I speak the petition to you.

Do not, proud one, hold your pride — I do not prize your cleverness; heed my word, know this the rare and priceless hour. The Beloved has many darlings; after long ages your turn has come — take the wedded joy; leave off the base one's stubbornness. The night is passing away, and youth, the body's adornment — play now in the savour of love, in the joy of union. If you meet not the Lord now, He comes not to hand again — separation drags on: I am His offering — death's brother is mighty, O friend.

While the lamp's light is not yet dimmed, O friend; while the flower on the couch is not yet withered; while the lotuses have not opened and the bee flown, while the bird upon the tree has not yet begun to sing; while the sun's light is not yet in the sky, and the cock's crow and the conch's note are not yet the morning — so long, fulfilling every longing of love's play, become desireless: the vow of the Beloved's love strikes home.

Whoever meets Him, losing her self — she alone becomes the mistress; making pride, the proud one wins no honour at all. As the cloud rains everywhere the same, it does not climb the heights — the water dwells in the low places. As, drowned beside the sandal, the bamboo grew tall, and the trees about it were made fragrant, accepted — so let the beloved bride be the diver in the ocean of mercy: she wins the supreme state, the treasure of all treasures.

At the hour of union, ignorant, holding her pride, she was not sweetened; at the least thing, angered, she went off the other way. Afterwards she repents, crying 'alas, alas,' wringing her hands, beating her head, cursing a million births. 'I find not the hour again' — she wails, wretched and grieving; the ache of separation, the sorrow of it, is slaying her soul. Do this good work, O Beloved, and coax her back — endless, and my all, I am an offering to You.

The hour of love's savour, in ignorance she heeded not the command; making her pride, the proud one lost her own honour. So, taking offence, my Lord of life too has grown proud; my pride is not honoured now, and I sit weeping in pain. In the world's eyes, in the Veda, in knowledge — the devotee is the foremost given; from that a thousandfold is reaped, as the seed is sown. In the state of the servant of servants I make my petition and fall at the feet — is there anyone who will coax Him for me? I have searched the whole world.

The eye trembles, the lip, the arm; the body burns; and in the mind is the restlessness — when will the Beloved come home? Eye meeting eye, and word meeting word; in the night-time the couch of ease calls out for peace. Taking hand in hand, pressing heart to heart, then limb to limb, the embrace given, they merge in poise. Making her drink the nectar of love's savour to her filling, O friend, the merciful Lord in His mercy fulfils her every longing.

The eyes that, seeing the peerless Form at first, swooned — those same eyes, deaf to all else, hold their gaze on Him in meditation. The ears bewitched by hearing the nectar-word, O friend — hearing the words from that same mouth, they gather in their awareness. He before whom, speaking her petition, the tongue grew weary — at His call the petition is uttered again. As, wine drunk, knowledge and meditation are forgotten, so by drinking that same wine comes a kind of waking.

Hearing the Beloved gone away, the ears were not made deaf — what faithfulness has she won, that faithful wife? The Beloved passing beyond the sight, the eyes were not made blind — what love has she, the loving one, whom love itself abashes? The term passing, running and running, and separation biting deep — what yearning bride is she, wasted by her yearning? Hearing the message from the far land, the heart did not burst — which fault, which fault shall I count? No answer comes.

The forest-fire of separation broke out in the body's wood; food and clothing in it are ghee poured on the flame. At the first flaring, the smoke was a grief past all bearing; from it the sky is dark with massed and clouding gloom. Blazing into a fireball, it lit up the whole sky; moon and the ring of stars are the sparks flashing. To whom shall I tell it — how, at the last hour, is this wretched state? — my grief is the world's own comfort.

These same eyes, that, beholding the peerless Form at first, fulfilled their longing and merged in poise; these same eyes, that, watching the Beloved's play with fixed, unwinking gaze, stood in utter amazement; these same eyes, that at the parting from the Lord of life are worn and wasted with the ache and pain of separation — the nose, the ears, the tongue were foremost once; now these same eyes are strangers to every limb.

The meditation was fixed and unwinking, moon and chakor — not a moment away — and now not even in dream is He shown. Hearing the nectar-word, His presence was here — that face — and now no message of Him is had from the wayfarers. At the hour of the couch He was held within the heart; now a garland of hills, hill upon hill, is the barrier between — how shall I go? Once was the majesty of poise, of union, of love's savour; now in separation's parting I cry out with grief and sickness.

He on whose single hood the whole earth rests, the Bearer of the earth — to call Him only 'the mountain-lifter,' what greatness is that? He whose one rapt lover is named the Lord of the Universe — to call Him only the Lord of Braj, what more does it add? He from whom all the forms of Onkar are spread wide — to call Him only the darling of Nand, what lordship does it give? Thinking they praise, the blind and unknowing slander Him — better than such worship, silence gives peace.

From head to foot, every limb, pore by pore, be cut and cut, and offered at the feet of the Sikhs; burned in fire, ground fine to powder, and let the wind carry it off, dispersed a hundred ways; wherever the Sikh sets his foot on the Guru's path, on that road, and that, let the ashes be strewn — that the dust of his sandalled feet may keep my love fixed: in Your mercy, O Merciful, redeem me, the fallen one.

Five journeys to the Ganga, five bathings at Prayag — all of it is already here, in bathing one Guru's Sikh. Give that Sikh water to drink with love, and Kurukshetra and the great horse-sacrifice have been kept. Raise a hundred temples of gold — that is what it is to teach a Sikh one word of the Word. Twenty times the sight of a saint — that is what it is to press and soothe a Sikh's tired feet.

As many sick people come to the physician's house, and to each, as the disease is, he gives the fitting medicine; as folk come to the king's door for the sake of service, and to each, as he is fit, he tells the fitting task; as many needy suppliants come before the giver, and whatever each asks, he gives and gives, and undoes their griefs — so many Sikhs come to the refuge of the Guru: as is each one's love, so is the longing he fulfils.

The singer knows the nature of raga; the renouncer knows renunciation; the giver of gifts knows mercy to the meek. The yogi knows the way of yoga; the enjoyer knows the savour of pleasure; the sick man knows sickness and its pain — this is plainly told. The gardener knows the keeping of flowers; the leaf-seller, the betel; the perfumer knows every fragrance and its way. The jeweller knows gems; the trader knows the trade — but the testing of the soul, some rare discerning one alone can tell.
