Chapter 15

The Thirst That Grows

Forty-five poems on the love that is never sated — the miser eyes and beggar ears that drink the Beloved's form and word and only thirst the more, and the prayer to be shown what the eye still longs to see. Around it: telling the true saint from the sham as the assayer tells gold from brass, Ravidas and Kabir raised from low birth to the state above all, and the closing confession of the heart the teaching enters but cannot pierce.

Whom the Lord favours, him He wakes from his sleeping; another passes his life awake, and Him He never calls. Whom the Lord favours, He runs to coax out of his sulking; another, in a servant's form, does service — and it does not please. Whom the Lord favours, He delights, and delights in; another comes decked and adorned, and is not let touch His feet. Whom the Lord favours, for him everything comes right — his glory is boundless; the telling of it cannot be done.

As a ship is set afloat upon the sea, and no trust is placed in it until it reaches the far shore; as the farmer ploughs and sows his field with love, and counts the blessing only when the grain comes in at his door; as the wife is a garland on her husband's neck at union, and her love is made sure when she looks on the forehead of a son — so speak neither praise nor slander of anyone: who can tell what kind of day shall come at the very end?

As flour and sugar show one same white, and the savour is found when the tongue tastes them; as gold and brass are both of them yellow, and are told apart when set before the great assayer; as crow and koel are both black-bodied birds, and are known when they speak — the harsh cry and the sweet — so the false and the true saint are alike in their dress: know them by the sure marks of their deeds and their doings.

Camphor and salt show one and the same; saffron and safflower are equals in redness. Silver and bell-metal are both of bright colour; lampblack and dark perfume are alike in blackness. The bitter colocynth and the fruit of nectar are one same yellow; diamond and crystal show a single form. So, in the fool's eye, the sham and the saint are one body; but the discerning one knows them — entering in, as the swan parts milk from water.

Seed sown in the salt-marsh brings forth nothing; cast into a watered field, from it comes grain in plenty. Yet from that same marsh saltpetre is worked, which, meeting fire, breaks out in heat and flash; and, joined another way, it meets the cool water — and drinking it, peace and ease come, and thirst and fever flee. So is the unwaked soul made by the nature of its company: with the world's fire it flares as fire; with the holy it is fashioned holy.

The lion's food is flesh; the cow's support is grass; the bee takes the scent of the lotus and counts it joy. The fish's dwelling is the water; the child's support is milk; the serpent knows the wind as the friend of its life. The chakor desires the moon; the peacock, the massed clouds; the rain-bird holds its whole meditation on the swati drop. The pandit's is the pondering of Vedas, the folk's the way of the world, the world's the love of Maya — and the wise one's, the Guru's knowledge.

As yellow and white, black and red — set the colours before the blind man, and he sees nothing at all; as raga and ragini, melody and music and every art — sing them, play them, and the deaf man perceives no note; as savours and dishes of many kinds are served before him — the sick man finds no special relish in them — so the Guru's darshan and word, the treasure of love's vow: its greatness I never knew, being the base one, empty of love's garb.

By what devotion of ours did You become the Lover of devotion? By what depth of our falling, the Purifier of the fallen? By what meekness did You become the Breaker of the meek one's grief? By what greatness of ours, the Striker-down of pride? By what service, O Master, the Helper of Your servants? What demon-work made You the Slayer of demons? Devotion's way, my sins, meekness, pride, service — I know none of them: by what earning shall I come to meet Your nature?

Singing what virtue shall I please the Treasure of virtues? With what charm shall the Charmer of the world be charmed? Giving what comfort shall I grasp the refuge of the Ocean of comfort? With what jewel is the mind of the Wish-jewel won? To be made the beloved of the Hero of a million universes — He knows every heart; with what plea shall I please Him? Body, mind, wealth, the whole universe is in His power; how shall He come into mine? — let me but shine by clinging to His glory.

As trees, meeting water, bear fruit of many kinds, and, meeting the sandal, are all made sandal-fragrant; as metal melted in fire pours out the same metal, and, touching the paras, its form breaks into gold; as under every other star the rain is only water, and the swati drop, meeting the sea, opens as a pearl — so the two natures, the worldly and the renouncing: meeting the Guru, the householder's own practice becomes the Formless One's.

As the wife adorns herself in ways of many kinds, and, meeting her husband, even the necklace on her breast is in the way; as the heedless child plays its countless games, and, awareness coming, the child-mind is forgotten; as the bride tells the fair fame of union with her Beloved, and, hearing it and hearing it, all her friends blossom — so the six rites, the toils of duty, are works for knowledge's sake: when knowledge's sun has risen, the works fly up and are gone.

As, remembering and remembering the Beloved, lost in love's savour, she graces the house holding silence, her heart smiling; as, her term grown full, she cries out at the birth-hour, and the elders, rejoicing, cling to the newborn; as the proud one lays down her pride and is prideless, and, finding love's savour, her frame thrills, hushed — so is the Gurmukh in whom love's devotion shines: speaking his longing, or holding silence, he is altogether fair.

As, seeing the lamp alight in the darkness, countless moths hum about it, woven through and through; as, sweets and drink being kept in a covered vessel, the ants swarm to it in boundless craving; as toward the soft fragrance of the lotus the swarms of bees come flying, sounding their fair note — so to him in whom the treasure of the Guru's knowledge is proven true, the whole world bows down at his feet.

Those who delight in beauty, the beautiful win over; those who are met by strength, the strong seize and hold. What is gained by wealth, the lords of wealth carry off; what is gained by verse, the master-poets aspire to. What is gained by yoga, the yogi hides away in his matted hair; what is gained by pleasure, the pleasure-lovers taste. But the Lord of the breath falls into no one's hand by force or striving — He is won, they say, through the one Word of the Guru.

As from the fruit comes the tree, and from the tree the fruit — a wondrous way of things, past all saying; as the fragrance is in the sandal, and the sandal in the fragrance — an astonishing play whose secret no one finds; as fire is in the wood, and the wood is in the fire — called a marvel filled with all amazement — so the Word is in the True Guru, and in the Word is the True Guru; he gives understanding of the Formless and the Formed, knowledge and meditation.

As the sesame takes fragrance from the flower's nearness, and from it, by patient effort, the perfumed oil is known; as milk is simmered, set with the starter, and churned, and, with discipline, the ghee is brought forth plain; as the well is dug, the chamber sunk into the earth, the wheel set going, and the pail draws up the water — so by the Guru's teaching, with faith and devotion's love, the perfect Brahm is recognised in every heart.

As the bow is gripped and the arrow loosed at full draw, and it goes flying exactly where it is sent; as the horse, feeling the whip, quickens its body and runs, urgent, wherever it is driven; as the maidservant stands waiting before her mistress, and hurries wherever she is bidden go — so the creature, yoked to the deeds it has earned, wanders the earth: wherever its food and drink are written, there it goes and eats.

As the omen-reader, hearing the donkey bray, accepts the omen, weighing nothing of the animal's virtue or fault; as the deer, hearing the hunter's note, takes the arrow full in the breast and gives its life, though the hunter honours no bond; as the warrior, hearing the war-song, hurls himself into battle, not pausing to weigh the singer's name or station — so I sound and sing the Guru's Word before You: though You know me a cheat wearing the holy garb, do not strike me away.

Powers and attainments, the nine treasures, nectar, the paras, the wish-tree, Kamdhenu, the wish-jewel, Lakshmi herself; the four great boons, sweet nature, beauty, virtue, enjoyment and its wisdom, insight into the Unseen, the Unknowable; blazing light, cries of victory, fame and majesty, grace, the glow of austerity, splendour — the glory of the saints' service; bliss, poise, every ease, all illumination — a million of these are in one least flicker of the Gurdev's glance of grace.

By the Guru's teaching they bathe at the morning hour, the tongue repeating the Guru's mantra as they have learned. The tilak on the brow, they fall at one another's feet; they sound the Word and sing it, and hear it in exaltation. Praise by the Guru's wisdom, the forsaking of evil counsel, knowledge and meditation — such Guru's Sikhs are the accepted ones. Seeing, hearing and speaking good of every person, within themselves they cherish the True Guru.

As the washerman rubs in the soap and beats the cloth on the stone, making the soiled garment stainless; as the goldsmith melts it over and over, refining and refining, making impure gold pure and noble; as the wind shakes and tosses the trees till, meeting the Malaya scent, it makes them accomplished sandal — so the Guru shows his Sikhs the discerning of the world's vanity, cuts away the filth of Maya, and brings them to know their own true home.

On the leaf-plate many dishes are served; the meal once eaten, it is thrown out and finds no place. The betel is relished on the tongue and chewed; spat out, the remnant is not worth half a coin. The flower-garland is laid on the breast and its scent taken; afterwards it is cast away, and none calls it good for anything. Hair and nails, fallen out of their place, are unclean, pleasing no one — so, parted from the Beloved, the very thread of dear things turns contrary.

As the mare leaves her foal and goes off into the darkness, and comes back to it by the love that remembers; as the sleeper, dreaming his way through far countries, speaks from within — his awareness keeping the house of the body; as the pigeon leaves his mate and ranges the open sky, and, seeing her, drops to her like a raindrop out of heaven — so the devotee, in thought and word and deed amid the world, seeing his Love is struck with wonder, beside himself.

As the warrior at the hour of war, harnessed in weapons and mail, leaves greed and clinging and goes out into the hero's field; as, hearing the dread war-drum, his spirit dances like the peacock's, and, beholding the champions, he cannot be held within his body; as, joining battle for his master's cause, he dies fighting — or wins the field, and his deeds are told and sung — so is the devotee's way: meeting the Lord of the world, in silence and in the Word, choked with sweetness, he smiles.

As the king mounts and sits upon his couch, and from the four quarters wealth is brought and brought to him; as, angered with one man, if he speaks the command of death, that instant the man is slain, his life destroyed; as, pleased with another, he grants a hundred thousand, a crore, and the treasurers at once count it out with honour — so, through all giving and taking, loving and leaving, the knower of Brahm is smeared by no smear — wise in the knowledge of God.

Dwelling in the house of fearlessness, in love's devotion, the four doors of liberation in his power, he reigns a king over the four quarters. Waking and dreaming, by day and night, rising, sitting, walking — remembrance and holy listening, his good works stand accepted. Whoever comes to him is welcome, and gains the treasure of the Name — as if the drum of the Lover of devotion were sounding at his gate. Freed while yet living, enjoying the ease of empire, in wondrous beauty he sits resplendent.

The eyes, beholding the form and colour, the beauty of every limb, show the heart its easy delight, its joy and marvels. The ears, hearing and hearing the fair fame, the relish, the sweet virtues, carry the message home to awareness. The tongue brings the Word, melody and savour with its pleading; the nose makes known the kinship of fragrance. Like rivers, so many, meeting in the ocean's way — the heart's vow of love for the Beloved finds no filling.

The miser eyes, gazing on the peerless form, knowing it the highest treasure, have not come to enough. The beggar ears, hearing the Beloved's nectar-words, drinking and drinking, have not put out the thirst of their listening. The tongue repeats the deep virtues of the foremost Guru, and — the rain-bird's own art — its longing is not stilled. Seeing, hearing, remembering, in the savour of wonder, the light given the lover has only made love thirstier.

I look with these eyes — and what the eye still longs to look on: show it the supreme, the peerless, the beautiful Form. I hear with these ears — and what the ear still longs to hear: be pleased, and let it hear the unstruck Word. I repeat with this tongue — and what the tongue still longs to taste: drip down love's nectar-savour and let it drink. Dwell in my mind, Great King, and work Your mercy — hold back its running, and fasten it, lifted, in Your love.

In sleep, where does one go? In hunger, what is it eats? In thirst, what is it burns — and what is the water drunk? What is laughing, and what weeping? What again are care and longing? What is fear, what love, what the crowd of terrors? Hiccup and sigh, cough, yawn and sneeze — from where do they come, and the body's restless stirring? Lust, anger, greed, clinging, the habit of self — all wonders none can answer; and of truth and contentment, of mercy and dharma, the creature knows nothing at all.

The body is a meeting of the five elements, say the world and the Veda — then say: in what manner were the five elements framed at the first? From what was the earth made firm, and how was patience spread through her? From what was the sky built, that stands without a foot? From what were the waters fashioned, the cool wind set playing, the fire made burning? — wonder upon wonder. The God who is cause of causes, unseen, unknowable, the Master — these things He alone knows; our speaking is empty argument.

As wood, watered and watered, is made strong and great, and, joined to the water, becomes the ship men trust; as, by the touch of the wind of the Malaya mountain, that same wood becomes sri-khand, crowned with fragrance; as, by the touch of fire, it burns house and body to ash, destroying friend, foe, the whole world alike — so the soul, threefold in the three strands of nature: at the very meeting of the holy company, the holy one's practice becomes its own.

To Gauri and Mahesh, to Ganesh and the thousand-rayed sun, make worship and speak the petition with a loving heart. O pandit, O astrologer — sift the omens, the ascendant, the houses; write me the fair day and the wedding-hour, true to the Veda. All my kin, my companions — sing the songs of gladness together; anoint my brow with the tilak and the oil, in the sweet custom. Raise the wedding-canopy, tie the marriage-knot, and give me your blessing: that in the union of the bed, love's faith may keep its way.

The head at the Guru's feet; the ears given to the teaching and its initiation; the eyes, beholding the darshan, find their ease. The tongue for the Guru's Word; the hands for service and prostration; the heart, by the Guru's knowledge, fastened upward in love. The feet walking to the holy company, even to circling it in reverence; the mind of the servant of servants sunk deep in humility. Bathed in the dust of the saints, fed on the love of devotion — by the Sri Guru's grace, love's honour is brought to light.

As the cloud rains everywhere the same, and the water, leaving the heights, makes its way to the low ground; as the world goes walking to the festival at the holy ford, and, for the pilgrimage's sake, gives gifts, greatly gladdened; as the king shines seated upon the throne, and from the four quarters wealth comes in day and night — so the desireless saint is a house of blessing in the world: food and clothing come walking to his door of themselves.

As the arrow, while it rests on the bow, is in your own power — loosed, it comes back to the hand by no effort after; as the tiger stays bound within the cage — once out, it comes into no one's keeping, and dwells with none; as the lamp burning in the house is not known abroad, but, become a forest-fire, cannot be hidden for all your hiding — so the word dwells unseen in the mouth, and no one perceives it: speak, then, with reflection — by the Guru's wisdom, the tale of virtues.

As the meru bead is strung at the head of the whole rosary, yet, for its bigness, comes not into the count of the telling; as, among the trees, the silk-cotton is seen the loftiest, and, for all its great height, has stood fruitless; as the kite flies sky-ranging among the birds, and, from the height it has won, spies only for carcasses — so singing, playing and reciting are nothing at all: without the Guru's teaching, a curse upon such cleverness.

As, among the five elements, the earth is the lowly-minded one, and in her all things are born, and into her all return; as, among the five fingers, the little one is slightest, and the gold-set gem shines on that very finger; as the bee and the silkworm are counted among the low births, and from them come honey and silk, wherein is comfort — so Ravidas and Nama, Bidar and Kabir: born low in the world's eyes, they won the state above all.

As a disease not shown to the physician, going without remedy, grows moment by moment past all cure; as a debt, without effort and payment day by day, swells — principal and interest — and breeds torment; as an enemy not mastered by treaty or battle grows stronger every hour, working his mischief; as the blanket, the more it soaks, the heavier it hangs — so, without the True Guru, sin sits swelling in the heart.

As the plantain that dwells beside the babul-tree — its thorns pierce her through, and she cannot save herself; as the parrot in the cage recites many a wise saying, and the cat, watching day by day, devours it in the end; as the fish, glad at heart within the water, is caught and wound in by the flesh set on the hook — so, without the True Guru and the saint, meeting crooked company, evil-mindedness breaks out in every limb.

Though a woman fashion her fair adornment a million ways, without the meeting of her husband she will dandle no son. Water the tree's root by night and by day — without the spring, no flower of it will open. In the month of Savan the farmer ploughs and sows the seed — without the rain, how shall the grain spring up? So the creature wanders the earth wearing garb upon garb: without the Guru, the lamp of knowledge is not lit in the heart.

As the goat is fed on water and milk and grain and food, and at the last the knife is put to its throat; as too great a load is heaped into the little boat, and it sinks in midstream, never to cross to the shore; as the woman of crooked ways, decking her body in adornment, gives herself away — into the house of grief — so, by deeds of adharma, the man of adharma dies before his hour, to wander the country of death.

As the young cook makes ready dishes of many kinds, and one unclean touch — in an instant the taint has clung; as the wife adorns her body in gladness, and, her days coming upon her, must leave the beloved's bed; as the expectant mother keeps watch over her burden daily, and one hurt to the womb is anguish and broken fortune — so keep goodness and discipline the whole of a lifetime: one small sin done is a spark let into the cotton.

On the greased pitcher the water-drop does not stay; grain fallen on the salt-flat springs up in no field. The silk-cotton stands on the earth a fruitless tree, and the poison-tree, when it fruits, deals the world grief. The bamboo, housed in the sandal's own fragrance, is never scented, hollow as it is, for all the wind's passing. So the Guru's teaching enters but does not pierce this heart of mine — as the swati drop, caught in the serpent's mouth, turns venom.
