Chapter 14

Seeking, the Seeker Finds

Forty-five poems on the seeking heart — the moth, the fish and the deer as the three vows of a love without deceit, the Sikhs gathered in the dharamsala tasting the Word, and the seeker who, like the bee from lotus to lotus, searches until some blessed moment folds him into the Word. At its centre burns the bride's separation — beating the same forehead the Beloved once adorned — and around it, the fool who hoards Maya and leaves empty-handed.

From one quarter the wind's coming brings rain; from another quarter the wind drives the clouds away. One water, drunk, keeps the body free of illness; another water, drunk, brings affliction and vain crying. The fire of one house cooks the food and the greens; the fire of another house burns the dwelling down. So, meeting the company of one, a man is freed while still he lives; meeting the company of another, he goes to the city of death.

In meeting the Beloved, by the vow of love's play, the moth merges its light into the lamp's blazing light. In easy union and in the parting of separation, the fish shows it with the water: parted, it gives up its life. Wearied and wonder-struck, its mind absorbed in the Word, the deer, pierced by the sound, declares the way. Union and parting, and the mind held in the Word — one whose love carries deceit is not called a lover.

One who, seeing the lamp of the darshan, does not meet it as the moth — empty of love's acquaintance, is not called a Guru's Sikh. One who, hearing the melody of the Word, does not meet it as the deer — empty of the mind held in the Word, shames his birth. One who is no rain-bird for the nectar of the Guru's feet, with no trust in his heart, is not made glad as the Guru's servant. The True Form, the True Name, the True Guru's knowledge and meditation, the one support — the Sikh shows himself as the fish to the water.

High, middling and low, the threefold world: to no one does his own grain ever seem bad. All do their trade to gather profit, holding their own dealing good, loving it. So each cherishes his own chosen ideal; each in its own garb the whole world keeps its watch. But whether the grain had strength, whether the trade found sale — the worth of one's ideal is known at the last hour, in the world ahead.

One's own grain seems beautiful to everyone; the fruitful beauty is the one the world praises. One's own trade seems bad to no one's heart; but buy only what the world, too, calls good. Everyone does his own works and the dharma of his line; but search the people and the Vedas for the highest deed. All say there is no liberation without the Guru — and the Guru to be sought is the one who keeps you untouched in the midst of Maya.

The Vedas and Brahma, reflecting, could not reach Him; Shesh-Nag and Shiva and the rest stand amazed. Narad and Sharda, Shukra and Sanak's brothers, adoring in yoga and trance, bow ever new. The Primal, the Unbeginning, the Unfathomable, past the senses — they win Him by repeating the Name of the Stainless One. Before the Guru, the mountain of blessing, and his holy company, they fall at the feet, O brother — even they fall at the feet.

As the bee gathers honey, storing drop upon drop, and the honey-taker comes and lifts it, throwing dust in its mouth; as the cow stores up milk for the sake of her calf, and the herdsman drives the calf off, milks her and takes it; as the mouse digs and digs the earth and fashions its burrow, and the snake, entering, hunts it down and eats it — so the fool, by a million sins, gathers and gathers Maya, and at the last hour walks away, shaking out both hands empty.

He at whose bidding the serpent's countless hoods uphold the weight of the earth — to call Him only the Lord of Braj, what greatness is that? He whose one rapt lover is named the Lord of the Universe — to call Him only the Lord of Braj, what greatness is that? He from whom the countless forms of Onkar spread wide — to call Him only the darling of Nand, what beauty does it add? Thinking they praise, the blind and unknowing make Him small; better than such worship, silence gives peace.

As mercury, touching gold, eats it away, and, cast into the fire, the mercury itself flies off; as the garment, soiled with filth, grows foul, and, meeting soap and water, the body of it is clean; as, when the snake has struck, poison spreads through every limb, and by the mantra all the poison's corruption vanishes — so the mind is sunk, bewitched by the attachment of Maya, and by the Guru's teaching Maya's very root withers away.

As the millstone's great slab cannot be raised by the head, yet with a lever it is drawn along without a thought; as elephant and lion are not tamed by force, but by patient skill are gently brought to hand; as a river in flood is fearsome to look upon, yet, boarding the ferry, one crosses over in a moment — so, amid the harsh griefs and joys of this world, by the Guru's teaching the burning is quenched at once.

As the swans in their row sit at Mansarovar, eating priceless pearls, and eating they rejoice; as good folk sit down together in the kitchen and taste the savour of dishes of many kinds; as many birds sit gathered in the shade of a tree, eating its fruit, made lovely by sweet voices — so the Guru's Sikhs sit down together in the dharamsala, and are filled with the nectar-taste of the Word in poise.

As a woman, adorned in wondrous ornament and dress, meets her husband, and her heart's joy is stainless; as the lotus-beds flower across the lake, and the bee is glad, sunk deep in their nectar; as the chakor longs with all its heart, holding its gaze, drinking with love the nectar-rays of the moon — so is the singing and reciting of the fair Word in the sangat: count it the great gift given at Kurukshetra — it digs out sin, root and bulb.

As paper melts away when a drop of water falls, yet, bound with ghee, it sits careful in the water; as a million loads of cotton burn at one small spark, yet, met with oil, the wick stands shining in the lamp; as iron sinks the moment it is cast into water, yet, joined to the wood, it heeds neither Ganga nor sea — so the serpent of death-time devours the whole world, and at the meeting of the True Guru, the servant of His servants is untouched.

As sugar and flour and ghee sit in the house all along, but when the guest arrives the pooris are fried, and all are fed, and eat; as robes and necklaces, pearls and golden ornaments — for the wedding the body is decked, and shown to the good folk; as diamond and ruby lie priceless in the shop itself, and, shown to the buyer, their rare worth is won — so the Guru's Word is written and bound in the pothi and kept; meeting together, the Guru's Sikhs read it, hear it, and fasten their love.

As a king weds many queens, and in whose house a son is born, in her house is the rule; as the merchant sets his ships afloat to the four quarters, and whichever reaches the far shore, its whole errand is fulfilled; as countless diggers dig the mine and search, and into whose hand the diamond comes, his trumpet sounds — so, among the Guru's Sikhs new and old, on whom the glance of grace alights, his beauty shines.

As the adept whom a spirit serves has sweets and drink fetched, and feeds them to others when they ask, himself never eating; as the fruitful tree bears its fruit and eats none, and traveller and bird break it off and carry it away; as the sea is a treasure filled full in every kind, and the diver, searching, draws its fine things out — so the desireless saint adorns the world, his fair body made for the good of others.

As one whose eye holds the lamp's light walks on at ease, but grasping at the flame with his hand meets a wound; as the swan, sitting at the shore, picks up the pearls, but, swimming for the far side, is wrapped round by the waves; as, warming at a fitting distance, fire serves every purpose, but, pressed too close, is sharp pain, a doubt that will not lift — so, by love of the Guru's Word is the supreme state; to crowd too near the person is to hunt the lion and the snake.

As the servant does his service at the master's errand, and the king, watching him, conceives affection; as the child plays its darling play, the father present, and, watching and hearing, his joy grows; as the wife sets out the dishes in the kitchen, and the husband, eating with love, gains the highest ease — so, when the hearers hear the Guru's Word with attentive hearts, the singer sings with delight, gently fastening love.

As, seeing the dark clouds massed and thundering in the sky, peacock and rain-bird lift their glad cries; as in the season of spring the many mangoes blossom, and the koel makes her sweet notes heard; as the lotus flowers open across the lake, and the bees, humming, raise up joy — so, seeing the hearers attentive, the singer sings: perfect love shines forth, and all merge in poise.

As the serpent in the blind night draws out its jewel, plays by it, then hides it, and shows it to no one; as the fine bride, after the union of the bed, at daybreak covers her body close with her garments; as the bee drinks the honey shut in the lotus, and at dawn flies off, letting no one know the bond — so the Guru's Sikhs rise in the nectar hour and sit in that union; tasting the essence of sweetness, they are satisfied in quiet.

As, after the bed's union and the dear play of love, the bride thereafter takes the child into her womb; as, the burden grown full, she sleeps among her elders, and, waking at the birth-hour, wakes the whole house; as, the son being born, she keeps measure in food and drink, that the child grow strong and show her happiness — so, meeting the Guru, the Sikh serves in awe and love: with little food and little sleep he earns the Word.

As the king's attendant knows his master's speech — a word spoken, he grasps it in an instant, unseeing; as the jeweller knows the testing of the gems — at one look he tells true from false by form and line; as the swan makes the parting of milk and water — mix them together, and it keeps each sorted, apart and clear — so, hearing the Guru's Word, the Sikh knows it at once; other, man-made song he counts not in the reckoning.

Fly up, O crow, and I am offered for you — let my Beloved come quickly, and pain, sickness, sorrow and the ache of parting be wiped away. Let this bitter waiting be cut, the inner veil of deceit be torn, and let me see the day of love's savour, of easy union. My Lal does not come, though the omens are fair and the hour is auspicious; let there be no delay — what secret is this, of fate or of the world? I am grown so anxious, so great a restlessness has seized me — I cannot hold patience: let me put on the yogini's garb and search.

Burning in fire, drowning in water, seized by serpents, countless weapons striking wounds in every pore; countless agonies and afflictions, the helpless, lowly state, summer and winter and the rains, by night and morning; the million killings — cow, brahmin, wife, the breach of trust — thirst and countless pains and ills possessing the body: gather them all from the whole world and sift them — they do not reach one moment of the Beloved's separation.

The full moon of autumn, which all the world praises — to my eyes it is a tongue of blazing fire. It drops spark upon spark into my burning body; the sigh of separation is the hiss of a serpent. At the touch of fire the very stone splits and shatters — this breast, held from its Beloved, breaks in two. Since the Beloved went away, living is a heavy dying; my birth is put to shame — love's vow slipped from my keeping.

Without the Beloved, in the bed-chamber of the house, every other form and colour I see is death's messengers, sheer terror. Without the Beloved, melody and music, discourse and learning and every other tale, strike the body like sharp arrows, unbearable, in the breast. Without the Beloved, food and dress and each limb's comfort are poison, bitter, and the very likeness of fire. Without the Beloved I am the fish out of water — there is no other way of living without my Love.

When the go-between fell at her feet and pleaded with her, drunk with pride she would give her face to no one. Her friends, all of them, with sweet words counselled her daily; she drove them off with her retorts. When the Beloved himself coaxed and called to her, 'my love, my love,' she heard and heard and held her silence, playing the great lady. Now, in the parting of separation, no one asks a word of her; none hears her anguish — she stands at the door and weeps.

This same forehead which, beholding, the Lord of my life delighted in — with his own hand he traced the tilak upon it and showed me; this same forehead his lotus hand would rest on, telling and telling love's tales, coaxing away my sulking; this same forehead — when I fled him, crying no and no, he ran after me and pressed me with love to his breast — that same forehead now I beat and beat, and rise up crying: not even in dream does the Lord show me his face.

As the woman at the birth-hour vows against her husband, and, the son being born, decks herself again in adornment; as, in the prison-house, one heaps blame upon the king, and, the moment he is freed, attends the same master's work; as the ox at the plough bears the goad's discipline daily, and never understands, never drops its crooked habit — so the sinner, in pain and blame, would leave his sin; the trouble once past, he turns his thought to sin again.

As the oilman's ox reckons it has walked many miles, yet, its eyes uncovered, the same spot is its whole station; as the blind woman twists her rope, at ease, unheeding, while the calf eats it as she works — she feels it and repents; as the deer, athirst, runs hard for the shimmering mirage, and no peace comes: wandering in illusion, it is lost — so my life passed as in a dream, land after land; I could not arrive where I had set my heart to go.

To sons He became the father, to brothers the brother, for the wife the husband, and the mother's own little child. With the child He is child-minded, with the young in youth, with the old He spreads Himself in the state of age. Through the eye He is form and colour, through hearing melody and music, fragrance to the nose, and taste spoken on the tongue. In each body, on every impassable way, the Actor moves in wondrous fashion — perfect in all beings, and from all of them apart.

As sesame is pressed with pain and the oil drawn out, and from it the lamp is lit and there is light; as the goat's body is cut and cut fine, and from its cord the strings sound raga and ragini so dear; as the lump of ore is smelted and made a mirror, and the world takes it in hand and beholds its face — so through pain and hunger and pure disciplines saints are made — and by them the deliverance of the world is wrought.

As grain, beaten from its first day to its last, has become the support of the whole living world; as cotton, put to torment, breathes out no sigh, and becomes the world's covering, its honoured dress; as water loses itself and mingles into every colour, and bird and beast and man are satisfied by it — so, taming and taming the mind, by discipline saints are made — the ford of deliverance for the whole world.

Walking with the caravan, one comes home unhindered; fallen behind, the highwaymen strike him down at once. While the fence is set, neither deer nor man touches the field; the fence once breached, deer and bird lay the field waste. The parrot in the cage takes Ram's name with love; the instant it slips out, the cat seizes it. Joined to the holy company, the mind reaches the home of poise; wandering alone, the five demons plunder the breath of life.

As in the house of one father and mother many sons are born, and not all are equal in virtue and worth; as many pupils come to the one school, and they do not read alike, nor all master the lesson; as many travellers sit together in the river-boat, and are not the same — each walks on by his own road — so in the refuge of the Guru's feet are many Sikhs; the True Guru, the Doer and the Cause, is the powerful one.

As at a daughter's wedding a great dowry is given, and at the marriage of her son much is received again; as money is first laid out into the trade, and, for the profit's sake, the heart does not shrink from it; as the cow is tended and kept with loving care — she eats what none can eat, and her milk is drawn and drunk — so, offering body, mind and wealth in the Guru's refuge, take the gift of his teaching, and live undying for ever and ever.

As to write 'a hundred thousand crore' weighs less than a grain — the labour he knows who must gather and keep the hoard; as by saying 'nectar, nectar' the undying state is not won, so long as the tongue has not tasted the essence of the nectar; as by the minstrel's blessing no man becomes a king, so long as, throned, he is not proclaimed the sovereign — so by writing, hearing and telling, the Guru's wisdom is not won, so long as the secret way of the Guru's Word is not beheld.

As the champak spreads its fair and various boughs, its fragrance becomes manifest in the flower; as the tree stands tall in form, known afar, the savour of its taste arrives at last in the fruit; as the Guru's knowledge, its melody and music, dwells in the heart, and breaks into light when the tongue is steeped in its relish — so know: the perfect Brahm's own form is in every heart, made manifest in the Great Being — honour him and know.

As the sufferer goes asking physician after physician, and, till the disease is not erased, he cries his pain; as the beggar, begging, wanders door to door, and no ease comes to him till he is filled; as the yearning bride sifts the omens and auspicious hours, and, till she has not met her husband, is all unrest — so the seeker searches, the bee from lotus to lotus, till he is folded into the casket of the supreme state.

Looking and looking, one becomes the tester of gems; hearing and hearing, the pandit grows adept. Smelling and smelling, one is versed in every fragrance; singing and singing, the singer is skilled in the art. Writing and writing the letters, one becomes the writer; tasting and tasting, the enjoyer is steeped in savour. Walking and walking, one arrives at the destination; searching and searching, one is absorbed in the Guru's Word.

As the bee goes taking the scent of lotus after lotus, and in the closed casket of some one lotus is enfolded; as the bird goes eating fruit from tree after tree, and, settled on some fine tree, its night is passed; as the trader goes looking from shop to shop, and sits at the shop of some rare one, and carries the merchandise home — so the seeker searches for the jewel of the Guru's Word, and among millions, with some one, he is wrapped in love.

As the moth rolls and turns about the lamp's blazing, and some time, falling into the flame, is burned; as the bird flies out day upon day to pick its food, and some day, caught in the snare, comes back no more; as the bee searches on, lotus after lotus, daily, and some time is closed within the lotus petals — so let the heart keep bathing deep in the Guru's Word: some moment, sunk in it, it is caught fast in it.

As the opium-eater hears it said, and says himself, 'opium is evil,' yet, fallen in its power, would leave it and cannot get free; as the gambler, losing his wealth at play, laments, and even then his company of gamblers does not break; as the thief, going to his theft, trembles at heart, yet quits not thieving till his very head is broken — so all men say, and hear, that Maya deals out grief; no one has ever conquered her — Maya plunders the world.

The leaf fallen from the tree is never joined again — such is the love of father, mother, son and brother, the attachment of Maya. As the bubble and the hailstone vanish while you watch, know the body's trust to be such illusion — let it go. The fire of straw burns out before a moment passes — such is the span of life, like love for a tree's passing shade. Bind your heart to the companions of birth, of life, and of the last hour — only then is this coming into the world made fruitful.

One yokes the plough and sows, another tends and reaps — and it cannot be known who at the last shall eat it. One digs, another lays the bricks, another plasters and coats — and none understands who shall come to dwell in the house. One picks and gathers, another cards, another spins and weaves — and none can tell on whose body it shall be worn. So all the brides deck and deck themselves with longing — which one, made the true beloved, shall be taken into the bed?
