Chapter 13

None Like You

Forty-five poems of humble confession and refuge — the poet naming himself the fallen sinner, the crow among swans who lived near the Guru yet knew him not, and crying the beloved prayer: none is a Master like You, none helpless like me; none the redeemer like You, none fallen like me. Around it, the greatness of Gurbani that holds every treasure one seeks, and the ethical heart of the path: see another's wife as mother and sister, another's wealth as the flesh of the cow.

Though I became fallen through base deeds, You revealed the Name, O Lord, that purifies the fallen. Though I grew grieved and meek, clinging in my helplessness, You made good Your nature: the Breaker of the meek one's pain. Though, seized by the son of the sun, I became a dweller in hell, the world sang Your fame: the Undoer of hell. To do good to the good, anyone can do; O store of mercy, to make good of my faults befits only You.

As the healthy enjoy pleasures of many kinds, but the ailing takes no joy in food or drink at heart; as the buffalo, of a patient, enduring nature, carries the flag of forbearance, while the goat's little heart cannot hold it; as the jeweller buys and sells diamond and ruby, but with the pauper they are neither kept nor fit for keeping — so, by closeness to the Guru, one is made pure by worship's grace; the undigested, the uninitiated, bears an unbearable pain.

As a little poison, eaten, brings death, the body burning and wilting, though tended for years; as, the buffalo milked and the vessel filled with milk, a single drop of sour whey falling spoils the keeping; as a million loads of cotton, at the least stray spark, in an instant are made a heap of ash — so meditating on another's body and wealth and fault, corruption robs the treasure of the good deeds of natural joy.

Dwelling close beside the sandal, the bamboo knew not its greatness, while the far-off trees were made fragrant by its scent. In the pool the frog knew not the way of the lotus, while the bee, from afar, was enchanted by its honey. Dwelling at the holy place, the crane knew not the secret, while the pilgrims, come in faith, were made fair. So, dwelling near, I, empty of the Guru's teaching, while the Sikh far off took it deep into his heart.

As the eye would look on another's wife, so it looks not, eager, on the Guru's darshan; as one hears another's slander with an attentive ear, so he hears not, with zeal, the Guru's Word; as the feet run to seize another's wealth, so there is no eagerness for kirtan and the holy company. The owl, the crow, the snake, in their fixed way, know not the good food — so one gains not the high state, but wallows in the low.

As, in the hour of night's rest, all folk have their union and joy, but the chakwi, parted, in grief, is known as luckless; as at the sun's rising the light shimmers, but the owl, blind, is a wall, so it seems; as pool, stream and sea are full of water, but the thirsty rain-bird stays crying its cry — so, meeting the holy company, the whole world crossed over, but I, the sinner, spend my days in sin.

As one takes fruit and flowers to the forest and shows pride before it — how could that ever befit? As one goes and shows a pearl to the sea, praising it again and again, and it gains no lustre thereby; as one holds a grain of gold before Mount Sumeru and, priding himself in mind, is called a madman — so, setting up knowledge and meditation, giving one's very life, one would please the Lord of breath, the True Guru — how could one please Him?

As one takes attar, sandal, grain and betel to sell in the eastern land — how could that come to profit? As one takes grape and pomegranate to the west, or runs to the south to sell musk and saffron; as one loads cardamom and clove for the southern land — a vain hope, a vain effort, no gain won — so, in the presence of the Guru, the Ocean, the store of virtue, one who parades his own knowledge and virtue is called a madman.

As many holes are seen in a sieve — how could it befit it to slander the water-pot? As the babul-tree is full of thorns, yet says of the lotus, 'thorny!' — pleasing to none; as the crow makes a mockery of the swan, and, leaving the pearl, fixes its love on the stench — so I am the great sinner, filled with sin; the whole world's corruption is dear to my heart.

As, bowed by calamity, the grieving forsaken wife takes no delight in the natural wedded joy of the happy bride; as, to the parted one in the pain of separation, the fair finery, the right of the wife in union, does not please; as, with barrenness in the body, in trouble, grief, care and toil, she sees the co-wife's son and suffers a great pain — so, in meditating on another's body and wealth and fault, the threefold sin, my heart cherishes not the good deeds of the holy.

Drawn from the water, the fish, kept in silk, without water thrashes and gives up its dear life; the bird caught from the wood, kept in a cage, without the wood is restless, its mind astir; the woman parted from her husband, most wasted and meek, her face downcast, her home a dread to her — so the Guru's Sikh, parted from the holy company, has no means of life without the company, none else.

As the betel-leaf, cut from its vine and going abroad, is kept long fresh by the touch of water; as the kaunj-bird, leaving its young and going to distant lands, by remembrance keeps them safe and unharmed; as the pilgrim carries Ganga-water in a filled vessel, and by its fair fame lives pure — so, at the refuge of the Guru's feet, the Sikh within lives by the Word, the company, the meditation on the Guru.

jaise bin pavan kavan gun chandan sai bin maliāgar pavan kat bās hai | jaise bin baid avakhad gun gop hot avakhad bin baid rogah na grās hai | jaise bin bohith na pār parai khevaṭ sai khevaṭ bihūnn kat bohith bisvās hai | taise gur nām bin gamm na paramapad bin gur nām nihakām na pragās hai |516|

As, without the wind, what virtue in the sandal, and, without the sandal, where does the wind carry its scent? As, without the physician, the medicine's virtue is hidden, and, without medicine, the physician devours no disease; as, without the ship, one crosses not to the far shore by the boatman, and, without the boatman, what trust is there in the ship? — so, without the Guru's Name, the supreme state is not reached; without the Guru's Name, the desireless light does not dawn.

As raw mercury, eaten, breeds corruption in the body, a piercing in every pore, a great pain borne; as one who eats garlic, sitting in the assembly in silence, gives off the stench — the fault cannot be hidden; as, sweets and drink together, the fly is swallowed, and undigested distress, a peril, is borne — so the uninitiated body, eating the Sikhs' alms, is heavy at the last, and goes to the realm of death.

jaise megh barakhat harakhat hai krisān bilakh badan lodhā lon gar jāt hai | jaise paraphulit hui sakal banāsapatī sukat javāso āk mūl murajhāt hai | jaise khet saravar pūran kirakh jal ūch thal kālar na jal ṭhahirāt hai | gur upades paraves gurasikh ridai sākat sakat man sun sakuchāt hai |518|

As the cloud rains and the farmer is glad, but the downcast salt-marsh melts away; as all the plants break into bloom, but the caper-bush and the aak's dry root wilt; as the field and pool fill, the crops with water, but on the high ground and the saline flat no water stays — so the Guru's teaching, entering the Guru's Sikh's heart; but the faithless, hearing it in his shakti-bound mind, shrinks away.

jaise rājā ravat anek ravanī sahet sakal sapūtī ek bāñjh na santān hai | sīchat salil jaise saphal sakal drum nihaphal sembal salil nirabān hai | dādar kamal jaise ek saravar bikhai utam au nīch kīch dinakar dhiān hai | taise gur charan saran hai sakal jag chandan banāsapatī bāns unamān hai |519|

As a king dallies with his many wives, and all bear sons, but one is barren, without offspring; as, watered, all the trees are fruitful, but the silk-cotton is fruitless, though watered, empty; as the frog and the lotus in one same pool, the high and the low, the mire and the sun's own meditation — so the refuge of the Guru's feet is for the whole world; the sandal and the plants and the bamboo, so let it be known.

As the calf cries out to meet its mother, but, bound in its tether, has no power of its own; as the pressed labourer longs to go home, but, fallen under another's power, spends himself in only thinking; as the parted one longs for union with her Beloved, but, by the goad of her line's honour, her frame grows weak — so the Sikh longs for the joy of the refuge of the Guru's feet, but, bound by the command, dwells abroad and frets.

Another's wealth, another's body, another's slander, dispute, deceit, trickery, cheating, the five-fold fraud he earns; treachery to friend, Guru and master, lust, anger, greed, attachment, the slaying of the cow, breaking of trust, the killing of the twice-born; disease, grief, parting, calamity, poverty, blemish, birth, death, the crying out in the realm of death. Ungrateful, arrow-tongued, poison-eater, a million faults, meek, base — countless are they, yet all these faults of mine reach not to a single pore of Your greatness.

The harlot's finery and corruption have no far shore; without a husband, whose wife is she called? The white crane, killing and eating so many lives, keeps its silence and false meditation — a way that leads nowhere. The mimic's mimicry and abuse cannot be told, most brazen, shrinking not, feeling no shame — so, in meditating on another's body and wealth and fault, the threefold sin, my countless basenesses reach not to a single pore.

As a thief who should be raised on the gallows, if let off with a pinch at the crossroad — what a small punishment! As base coin that should be driven from the city — if I turn my face to it and sit, what shame is there? As a great crushing weight that should be cast off — if it be blown from the elephant's head like dust, what weight is it? — so, against the Lord of the fallen, a million sins are no counter-weight; to me, death's rod and hell are a doing of good.

If a thief points out his theft, the swan does not leave Mansarovar for home — he is raised on the gallows and slain; if the crane points out the fish to the highwayman, that very instant his head is struck off; if one runs to another's wife and the deer betrays him, ear and nose are cut, a fine, and banishment from the city — theft, highway-robbery, another's wife, the threefold sin: mine — the son of the sun gives the rod of hell; I have lost.

The world goes on pilgrimage to holy places, but the crane, dwelling in their very midst, knew not their greatness. The full light of the sun shimmers, yet the owl, blind, is a wall, earning its evil deeds. As in the spring season all the plants are fruitful, but the silk-cotton, fruitless, holds its pride in its heart — so I, in the Guru, the Ocean, have not tasted the taste of love; like the thirsty rain-bird, I keep only crying my cry.

As the lordly elephant thunders and slays a man, then throws dust on his own head, and is called sound and well; as the parrot in the cage speaks its fashioned words, and, seeing and hearing, is called fit for the king's house — so one, drunk on the joy and riches of Maya, does sin, and is called happy, sporting in the taste of pleasures. The continent, the true, the contented, the holy he slanders — his knowledge and meditation are upside-down, an ignorant folk.

If the many drops should pride themselves in their heart, before the sea they gain no glory. If the bird flew high in great strength, then, beholding the sky, its heart shrinks small. As, gazing on the vast, mighty universe, the little fig-insect that flies is ashamed — so You are the Creator, and we are made, and Yours; before You, how could I even speak?

None merciful to the meek like You, none ignorant like me; none a sinner like me, none the purifier like You. None fallen like me, none the redeemer like You; none corrupt like me, none the doer of good like You. Mine are the faults, You the Ocean of virtue — sinking to the depths, Your support is my only refuge.

Steadying the breath, stilling the mind's fish-like restlessness, past the tenth gate is the unreachable dwelling. There is no fire, wind, water, earth or sky; no moon, no sun, no rising and no passing. There is no nature, no working, no body, no breath, no knowledge, no Word held in the mind, no sight and no shining. No master, no servant, past the reckoning, past the unstruck — propless, in the Void, a wondrous, marvel-filled faith.

As, day and night, the wine sits in the vessel, and it knows not the secret, in what manner it works; as it is poured and shared out cup by cup, and the assembly gains not the secret, nor weighs the way; as the vintner, sitting daily, sells the wine, but knows not its greatness, only loving the coin — so one writes and reads and sings the Guru's Word; rare is he who loves the nectar-taste, the true state.

As, blade of grass by blade, a thatch is woven and roofed, then a burst of fire turns it all to ash; as a child builds a sand-house by the shore of the sea, and the wave, surging, breaks it, holding no steadiness; as many deer sit gathered together in the wood, and, one lion roaring, none stays in his place — so sight, the Word, awareness, meditation and knowledge break forth, and, love made full, all else is undone.

As one fences round the sandal with the babul-thorn, or keeps glass, gripped, in a casket of gold; as the crow, sitting by the swan, gives itself airs, and the jackal, in the lion's den, cherishes hope; as the donkey mocks the elephant, the sovereign's own thief levies fines, the fly settles on milk and wine alike — so, hiding the holy, the base do their wrong; the way is turned upside-down — call it the delusion of the age of strife.

As without eyes one beholds no form and colour, and, empty of ears, hears no melody and sound; as without a tongue no word is uttered, and, empty of a nose, no scent or fragrance is taken; as without hands one cannot do the work of deeds, and, empty of feet, how could one go from place to place? As without food and clothing the body keeps no steadiness — so, without the Guru's Word, the taste of love is not drunk.

As from the fruit the tree, and from the tree the fruit — a wondrous state, past all telling; as the fragrance is in the sandal and the sandal in the fragrance — in that wondrous play, none finds the secret; as the fire is in the wood and the wood in the fire — a most astonishing wonder, so it is called — so in the True Guru is the Word, and in the Word the True Guru; He makes plain the formless knowledge and meditation.

As the sesame takes on the flower's fragrance, and from it, by effort, the scented oil is known; as the milk is boiled, set with starter and churned, and, with restraint, the ghee is brought forth plain; as one digs a well, sinking into the earth, and, tying the rope, lowers the pail and draws up water — so by the Guru's teaching, in loving devotion, the perfect Brahm is recognised in each and every heart.

As the river-water does not sink the wood, but, as if in shame, upholds its own; as, though the son does many childish things, the mother holds no fault of his in her heart; as the brave one, keeping his vow to the full for the refugee, though he do a hundred thousand wrongs, does not slay or cast him off — so, by the touch of the supreme Guru, the touchstone, the deeds and doings of the Sikhs are held of no account.

As, unwashed by water, the garment grows soiled, and, without oil laid on, the hair grows wild; as, unpolished, the mirror is empty of light, and, without rain, there is no grain in the field; as, without a lamp, the house is dark, and, without salt and ghee, food is all the same — so, without the holy company, the pain of birth and death is not wiped out; and without the Guru's knowledge, only doubt.

As, sitting in mid-stream without the ship, one crosses not, and without the touchstone's touch no metal is gold; as without the Ganga no other water is holy, and without a husband the many sons do not make a wife; as without the seed sown no grain grows, and without the swati-drop's stream in the oyster there is neither pearl nor gem — so, without meeting the refuge of the Guru's feet, birth and death are not wiped out, and the servant is not called a servant.

As the cat says, 'I will not make meat my food,' yet, seeing the mouse, runs after it and holds no steadiness; as the crow, in mimicry, goes to sit in the swan-assembly, but, leaving the pearl, remembers the stench; as the jackal, taking a vow of silence, makes many efforts, but, hearing another jackal, cannot hold its cry — so, meditating on another's body, another's wealth and fault, the threefold mind says it would leave off, but its habit does not go.

The Smritis and Puranas tell it in a million ways, the Bhagavat, the Vedas, grammar and the Gita; Shesh-Nag, the sea-churner, the Endless, the gods, Shiva, the sages, the world, the devotees, gods and men, the detached; knowledge and meditation, the state beyond mind, the reasoning of the state beyond mind, melody and sound, the twice-born, the ways of the gods, ever — but a half-letter, a vowel-mark, one letter of the Guru's Word is unreachable, most unreachable, unfathomable, my friend.

The darshan is seen, is seen — the whole world says it; but with what sight is the mind merged in the darshan? The Guru's teaching is heard, is heard — everyone says it; but with what awareness, hearing, does one not run elsewhere? The world chants in triumph the Guru's mantra with the tongue; but by what art is Light joined to Light, love fixed? Empty of sight, awareness, knowledge, meditation, of the whole — the Purifier of the fallen, the Guru, instructs the fool.

As saying 'sugar, sugar' with the mouth makes nothing sweet, so long as the tongue does not taste and eat the sugar; as, in a dark night, saying 'lamp, lamp' does not undo the gloom, so long as it is not lit; as saying 'knowledge, knowledge' brings no knowledge at all, so long as the Guru's knowledge is not gained within — so saying 'meditation on the Guru' gains not the meditation, so long as one does not go and merge in the Guru's darshan.

The Smritis, Puranas, Vedas, Shastras, Brahma, Vyas, saying 'not this, not this, not this,' Sukhdev and Shesh-Nag sang His fame. Shiva, the sons of Sanak, Narad and the great sages, gods, men, adepts — He came not into their yoga and meditation. By mountain, tree, pilgrimage, going, charity, gift, fast, fire-offering, sacrifice, feast and oblation He was not found — but by such great good fortune, amid Maya, to the Guru's Sikhs, the perfect Brahm has shown Himself in the form of the Guru.

The outer fire is quenched by the water of the stream — but if the fire catches the boat itself, how is it put out? One flees the outside and takes the shelter of the fort's walls — but if the plunder is within the fort, tell me, where does one go? Fearing thieves, one goes and grasps the king's refuge — but if the sovereign himself slays, how is the life saved? Fearing Maya, worn out, one goes to the Guru's door — but there, if Maya still holds sway, where is one to rest?

Fearing the snake, one goes and grasps the mountain's refuge — but if the snake seizes one there, how, tell me, is one to live? Fleeing the jackal, one grasps the lion's refuge — but if the jackal robs one there, tell me, what is to be done? Pressed by poverty, one goes to the refuge of Sumeru and the sea — but if poverty burns one there, whom is one to blame? Fleeing the doubt of one's deeds, one grasps the divine Guru's refuge — if the deed is not wiped out there, whose shelter is one to take?

As in the sea, full of every treasure, the swan, the diver, surely wins its grace; as in the mountain the diamond, the ruby, the touchstone — the digger, digging, brings them plain into the world; as in the wood the sandal, the aloe, the camphor — the perfumer, refining, gladdens with fragrance — so in the Guru's Word are all precious things; whatever one seeks, that very thing it brings forth.

See another's wife — tall or short, whoever she be — in the form of mother, sister, daughter. Know another's wealth as the flesh of the cow; touch it not in your heart, but go untouched, apart. In each and every heart the perfect Brahm's Light, warp and weft — weigh no one's fault or virtue. By the Guru's teaching, restrain the running mind, and put away the wronging of another's wealth, another's body, another.

As at dawn the bird flies off from the tree, then comes again and sits in that same tree; as the ant and the beetle come out of their hole, go over the earth, then go again into that same hole; as the child, quarrelling, sulks away from mother and father, then, hunger striking, drops his stubbornness and comes back, repenting — so one who forsakes the household and flees to dwell detached, seeking a support, comes running back again to the household.
