As all the trees, each in its own way, the sandal makes sandal, all the tamal-wood; as from copper itself comes gold, its stain cast off, at the touchstone's touch that brightens every metal; as the many streams, in their varied currents, meeting the Ganga, become one even, well-flowing water — so all the gods do not leave their fixed nature; the True Guru is the refuge of the refugeless, the Timeless.

The chameleon's colour, the lotus's fragrance — where wanders the crow, wood to wood, and the dog? House to house the cat roams for its food; the harlot and the sensualist are not the equal of the faithful. Pool to pool the crane wanders, and joins not the swan-line; killing life, the silent crane's meditation is no meditation. Without the service of the divine Guru, to be a servant of other gods is to leave the sandal, like the fly, for the place of stench.

The shopkeeper of another shop takes at a low weight and gives at a high price, cheating whoever comes; trading with them, no one gains a profit, but, seeing loss upon loss, repents. As a clay pot goes on the fire but once, so the doer of deceitful dealing shows himself out. The True Guru, the banker, sells virtue and takes fault — hearing, hearing his fair fame, the world rises and runs to him.

The perfect Brahm has no equal, no second — how, then, could there be many images made? The perfect Brahm in every heart sees, hears, speaks — why, then, does He not show Himself plain in the image? House, home and its mistress are many, but of one form — the image is not fair, though set up in every shrine of the gods. The True Guru, the perfect Brahm, ever alert — the one Light, the form, the pair, together, is worshipped.

Leaving Mansarovar, going to sit at another pool, the swan eats the water-creatures and shames the swan-line. Parted from the water, if the fish stays alive, it is not called a lover, for its love was deceit. Drinking any water but the cloud's own drop, the rain-bird sets a stain upon its kind. The bee-mind at the lotus-feet, the Guru's Sikh, is freed; the servant of other gods gains not liberation.

As, when a rebel chief is subdued and brought in by the landholder, the king, beholding him, is well pleased; but if the king's own servant flees to that landholder, the sovereign strikes and slays him, landholder and all; as another's servant, going to the king's door, wins honour, but a king's servant going to another door is disgraced — so the Guru's Sikh who goes elsewhere for refuge: the Guru is the refuge, and no other has power over the Guru's Sikh, not for an instant.

As in the grove the mango and the silk-cotton, high and low, fruitless and fruitful, are plainly known apart; as, near the sandal, the bamboo and the plants, fragrant and scentless, are known as Shiva and Shakti; as the oyster and the conch both dwell in the sea, but the swati-drop's offspring is not made equal in them — so the servants of the divine Guru and of other gods differ: pride and humility, the honoured and the unhonoured in the world.

As the faithful wife wishes to look on no other man, and the perfect faithful wife has meditation for her husband alone; as the rain-bird longs not for pool, stream or sea, but hopes for the cloud's drop, its love and knowing fixed on the Beloved; as the partridge wants not the sunward dawn, but in mind, word and deed the moon is its dear life — so the Guru's Sikh keeps clear of the service of other gods, yet in natural ease, with no disdain, no pride.

Two mirrors held show one form as many; setting foot in two boats, one reaches no shore. Seizing two directions, hand and foot are broken; at the crossroads, double-minded, one strays and sets a false step. Two kings, and their village and people are not at peace; two men's wife is no noble bride. To be a Guru's Sikh and then keep the habit of serving other gods is to suffer the rod of death — cursed the life in the world.

As a tree, watered at the root, grows green from that in branch upon branch, leaf upon leaf; as the faithful wife, true and alert in her vow, gladdens the whole family — blessed is she; as, through the mouth's door, sweets and drink and food make every limb content and sound — so, of those who serve the divine Guru with the one support, among a million of gods and best of men, there is scarcely one.

The same mercury, eaten, works many ruins in the body; the same mercury, eaten, becomes a cure. The same mercury, touched to gold, dries it up; the same mercury, touched, turns copper to gold. The same mercury cannot be gripped by the hand, ungraspable; the same mercury, made into a pill, the adepts bow to. Winning the human birth, whatever company one meets, so is the rank, the power, the sway one gains.

What does the well-frog know of the ocean's treasure; the conch-creature knows not the glory of the swati-drop. What does the owl know of the risen light of the sun; what does it eat of the silk-cotton, mistaking it for the parrot's love? The crow knows not the company of the swan-line; the monkey recognises not the ruby-diamond. The servant of other gods knows not the service of the divine Guru — the mute, the deaf, cannot tell or hear or content the mind.

As, in the fierce burning heat, most cruel, without fire the adept cannot cook a morsel; as by the night's dew the mountain is made wet, but without water drunk it stills no thirst; as in the summer season the sweat breaks on the limbs, not undone but by the wind of a fan for its coolness — so coming and going is not undone by the service of other gods; the Gurmukh gains the dwelling in his own true state.

How is the craving for mango stilled by eating tamarind; a father's love is not found at the neighbour's. How is the sea's treasure found in a pond; the lamp's light does not equal the sun and the pools. The well-water does not equal Indra's rain; the palas is not made fragrant by the sandal's scent. The mercy of the merciful beloved Guru is not in other gods — He who runs through realm and universe, from rising to setting.

Falling from the sky toward the earth, what use is it to grasp at the wind for support? Burning in the fire, running and running, one grips the smoke, but cannot escape — a folly the fool's mind raises. Drowning in the boundless sea's current, one clutches the foam — a vain thought, no means made to reach the shore. So, grieved in coming and going, in the service of other gods, without the Guru's refuge there is no state of freedom, no reign.

As one asks the blind the way of form and colour, and the blind sees not himself — how could he show it? As the deaf is asked of melody and sound, and, understanding nothing himself, how could he make it understood? As one asks the mute the discerning word, and, wanting to speak, he cannot — how could he tell the Word? Without the True Guru, seeking the knowledge and meditation of Brahm is vain — an ignorant mind gains it from no other.

Going to sell fine robes in the land of the naked, one gains no profit, but doubts even the principal. Wanting to learn gem-appraisal from the blind, or to beg a kingdom from paupers — a false, deluding folly. Going to the mute to learn astrology and medicine, to the deaf for melody and sound — a vain, unerring mistake. So one who, by the service of other gods, would wipe out fault and win freedom, without the True Guru bears the pain of the stake of death.

Sown in saline soil, the seed brings forth no grain; losing the principal, one weeps, and the king's fine is levied. As, churning water, no butter breaks forth, but the pot and the churn-stick shatter and break — so, begging a son of ghosts, no worthy son is born; the doubt fixed in the soul is not let go, though one would. Without the service of the divine Guru, other service is a giver of pain — in this world and the next, in grief, one is engrossed.

As the lion's body falls under the jackal's sway, as the king of birds' son, the crow, goes to make its bow; as the comet dwells in the houses of the sky, and the wish-tree adorns no wood, but the sun-plant is joined to sun and moon; as the wish-cow's offspring drinks at the sow's teat, and the lordly elephant's son is set before the donkey — so the Guru's Sikh's son, being a servant of other gods, is a fruitless birth, a lightning-blaze in the line.

As the bitter gourd, though it does not sink in the river's mighty current, still does not lose its bitterness from within; as, though the stone be clasped in the fire and burnt, or the thread dipped in the water, its hard heart stays hard; as the kite is seen flying, roaming the sky, but its children are not saved from the falling rain — so powers, attainments, the sense of a second, the play of the three qualities: the Gurmukh's fruit of bliss is not for the graceless.

One who trades in cowrie, paisa, rupee and gold-piece, becoming an appraiser of jewels, is called a jeweller; but the jeweller, then trading again in cowrie, lowers his standing among the worthy five. The servant of other gods, becoming a servant of the divine Guru, wins a high place in this world and the next; but forsaking the divine Guru's service to serve other gods, a fruitless birth, an unworthy son, is made a laughing-stock.

As the wife who is faithful in mind, word and deed — her husband, in mind, word and deed, desires her; adornment and finery, the couch, union and joy, and in the whole family her praise is sung. Natural bliss, peace, joy, wedded fortune and good luck, a fair mansion, its beauty shining in fair conduct — so the True Guru keeps his Sikhs alert within the household, undoing the double-minded love of the service of other gods.

As the faithful wife, alert in her vow, is thereby the mistress of the house, and called its lady; her longings for food, clothing, wealth and home are met, and she is fair in finery, at home on the couch — so the True Guru keeps his Sikhs within the household, and, from a swing of plenty, swings them in every joy. Food, clothing, wealth and home, their longing made pure — he undoes the love of a second, the service of other gods.

The knowledge and teaching of people and Vedas for the faithful wife is this: in mind, word and deed, the right of her lord's service. Not name and bathing, charity and restraint, not chanting, austerity, pilgrimage, fasting, worship or vow; not fire-offering, sacrifice, oblation, not the service of gods and goddesses, no melody, sound, dispute or discourse at another's door — so among the Guru's Sikhs the one support is foremost, and all other knowledge, meditation and remembrance are set aside.

As, for the faithful wife, dwelling pure in the home — bathing, food, clothing, wealth, home, the ways of the world; father, mother, brother, son, kin, family, friend, the service of the Guru's people, joy, ornament and finery; work, business, childbirth, the bearing of filth — all is pure, whatever her manifold conduct — so the Guru's Sikhs are unstained within the household; the service of other gods is a cursed birth in the world.

Sunday and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday — they have shared out the seven days. Lunar day, fortnight, month and season, the ways of the people — but to the one Ik Onkar no one has given a day. The eighth for a birth, the ninth for Ram, the eleventh, the twelfth, the fourteenth are made birthdays. None finds a day for the creation of His creatures — the Unborn's birth, tell me, on what day is it marked?

He whose Name is the Unborn — how could He take a birth, and how could a birth-fast be kept for the Unborn? He whose Name is the Life of the world, Timeless, Undying — how could a hunter slay Him and take on that ill fame? He whose Name grants the flawless, spotless state of freedom — how could the Lord of the gopis be given the pain of separation? The worshipper of the stone image is a blind wall — ignorant within, empty of the knowledge of the Guru.

As at the sun's rising the countless stars are undone, so the service of other gods before the meditation on the divine Guru. Shop, road and ghat, the whole array wanes, night and day — so the ways of people and Vedas before the True Guru's knowledge. Thief, adulterer and gambler, attachment, treachery, darkness — at dawn, the glory of the Name, of charity and bathing. In another pool the frog, the scum, the shellfish; in Mansarovar, the perfect Brahm, the Guru, every treasure.

As the difference of night and day is told, so know the service of other gods and of the divine Guru. In the dark of night the many stars glitter; by day, the sun — recognise the one Ik Onkar. In the dark night is the doer of corruption, bent on corruption; at dawn, know the love of the Formless One. In the hour of night's rest, cheat, thief and adulterer do their wrong; the ways and love of statecraft are told of the day.

By night, base-mindedness, for the deed of unrighteousness; by day, the Guru's wisdom, the deed of dharma. At the rising of the sun's light everything is seen; in the dark of night, deluded, one wanders in doubt. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss is a divine body, a divine eye; the servant of other gods has but the outward, fleshly eye. Worldly clings to worldly, blind to blind wall; the Gurmukh's bond is the secret of the highest good.

As, meeting the water, the plants of many colours grow, and the sandal's fragrance makes the fickle wood fragrant; as fire is fire, and whatever metal is seen is seen, but at the touchstone's touch the light of gold is set on it — so the service of other gods does not wipe out the ill habit; the service of the True Guru ferries one over the sea of fear. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss, its glory wisdom past all measure — 'not this, not this, not this,' homage, homage is uttered.

Openly the world does its corruption at the harlot's, and to it the way of people, Veda and knowledge is nothing. The noble bride, leaving her husband, going to another door, sets a stain, heeding not the goad of her line. The deceitful lover, the crane's meditation, roams by Mansarovar; leaving Mansarovar, the swan-line, in ignorance. The Gurmukh and the self-willed, the Guru's wisdom and the base — the meditation on another's body and wealth, the stained and the unstained.

Betel, camphor and clove set before the crow, it leaves them and eats the foul stench, most cunning. Though the dog bathe in the Ganga again and again, its ill habit does not go; it is not made divine from its ignorance. Betel and sweets and great nectar given to the snake, it spits out deadly poison, in its ego and pride. So the swan-assembly of Mansarovar, the holy company: the servant of other gods eyes it with the crane's false meditation.

The chakwi and the partridge meditate day and night on sun and moon; in whatever colour one is steeped, that one it wants. The fish and the moth, in the bond of water and fire, do not turn aside their fixed way, but hold to the end. The swan's love of Mansarovar, the crane's of another pool — high and low are not the same; there is no equality. So the servants of the divine Guru and of other gods differ, no more equal than the sea and the stream.

In loving mood, seeing the reflection, as the chakwi at night — by the Guru's wisdom, knowing and recognising the Self; in the mood of hate, seeing its shadow, the lion falls into the well — know it as base-mindedness, sunk in double-mindedness. The cow's many calves stay together, mingling as one; the dog, seeing another, sets up strife and war. The Gurmukh and the self-willed, the sandal and the bamboo — the foe of colour, the doer of harm and the doer of good.

If one calls a man 'dog, deer, snake,' he, hearing it, flares up, runs and gives a beating; but the dog stays awake through the night for its master's work, and the deer, hearing the sound, gives up its life; the snake, when the charmer chants the mantra, offers up body and mind, its fangs drawn, its shame upheld. Without love, without devotion and its mood, empty of the mind on the Word, without the Guru's teaching, cursed is the life in the world.

As, when the house catches fire, one would wake and dig a well — the task is not accomplished, and one weeps and repents; as, when the hour of battle comes, one would learn the warrior-art — a vain effort, no rank of victory won; as, when the companions steal away by night in sleep, at dawn one binds one's load — where, then, does one go? — so, blind in the toils of Maya, the span passes away; at the last hour, how could one fix the love on Hari's Name?

As in restless water is not seen the full, clear reflection of the sun and the moon; as in a soiled mirror is not seen the pure, fair form of a lovely face; as, without a lamp, what is near is not beheld, in the dread and dark of a fearsome house — so the mind, covered over by Maya's doubt, the base — the meditation on the True Guru is the bathing-joy of the taste of love.

As at one season the tree is fruitful, in full leaf, and at another its flower, fruit and leaf fall away; as the river-water sometimes flows level and calm, and sometimes shows itself fathomless, a mighty current; as at one time the diamond lies in an old rag, and at another, set in gold, it dazzles and shines — so the Guru's Sikh is a royal prince, a lord of yogis; bearing Maya's great weight, he awakens the art of yoga.

Taking food and clothing along, and making his vows, he takes birth, and in the holy company adores the beloved Guru. Come here, he forgets the Giver, clings to the handmaid, wanders, gripped by the five thieves, the ghosts, the doubt, unruly. Forgetting the true death, he takes this life for real, mistakes the false world, knows not win from loss, in a dream-trance. The chance is slipping by — win the birth, make it a victory; fix your love in the holy company, unreachable, unfathomable.

Blessed the birth, love fixed at the refuge of the Guru's feet; blessed the sight that beholds the Guru's darshan. Blessed the awareness that hears the Guru's Word each day; blessed the tongue that sings the virtues of the Ocean of virtue. Blessed the hands in the worship and homage of the Guru's feet; blessed the feet that trace the round of reverence. Blessed the union with the holy company in the home of natural ease; blessed the heart that is merged in the Guru's wisdom.

When again the human birth, when again the holy company, where night and day are spent in the hour of kirtan? When again, the gaze fixed on the darshan, one with another, is the love fixed on loving devotion and its service? When again the melody, sound, dispute, the way of song, hearing the ring of the beloved Guru's Word, is it sung again? When again, taking paper, pen and ink, writing the beloved Guru's Word, does one win his own true state?

As the palas-leaf, joined with the betel-vine, reaching the king's hand, is prized in the world; as the foul indigo, amid the colours, joined to fine silk cloth, is reckoned spotless; as, in the service of the salagram, the conch, most impure, is yet brought, supremely pure, for the sacred feast — so I, a crow, in the swan-assembly of the holy company, no longer bear the burden of death, but sing the Guru's Word.

As the fish in the water knows not its greatness, then, without water, thrashing and thrashing, dies; as, dwelling in the wood, one knows not its worth, then, fallen under another's power, bird and deer fret; as the woman knows not the joy of union with her Beloved, then, parted, cries out in the pang and pain of separation — so at the refuge of the Guru's feet the unaware soul, once the parting falls, remembers, and repents.

Hearing You are the Lover of devotees, hopeless, my heart grows hopeful; hearing You are the Purifier of the fallen, I hold up hope. Hearing You are the Inner Knower, I tremble in my inmost being; hearing You are Merciful to the meek, my fear and doubt are cast away. Meeting the raincloud, the fruitless silk-cotton — joined to the sandal's fragrance, I am the fragrant garland. By my own deeds I would find no place even in hell — but relying on Your own true nature, I take Your support.
