Chapter 11

The One Support

Forty-five poems on single-minded devotion — the faithfulness that fixes on the one Guru alone, as the calf will drink from no other cow, the swan will leave no Mansarovar, and the faithful wife serves one husband. Around it, the Lord who honours the least offering — Draupadi's strip of cloth, Sudama's handful of rice, the grieving elephant's lotus — and the futility of every worldly attainment without the Name.

As the bride tells the fair fame of union with her Beloved, and, hearing it, all her friends are filled with delight; as, remembering and remembering the taste of the Beloved's love, filled with wonder, she gives it lustre, keeping silence, smiling in her heart; as at the full term of the womb, at the hour of birth, at the child's crying, the Guru's people, glad, cling to it — so the light of the Gurmukh's love and devotion: whether he speaks in detachment or keeps silence, all of it is pleasing.

As the gardener plants many trees for their fruit, but the tree that stays fruitless serves no purpose; as a king, for the sake of offspring, weds many wives, but the wife without a child does not adorn the house; as the teacher joins many pupils in his school for the giving of learning, but the name of the meek, learning-less fool is raised in scorn — so the True Guru gathers his Sikhs, the branches, for good knowledge; and without the Guru's knowledge, cursed is the birth, a shame.

The Ganga, the Saraswati, Jamuna, Godavari, Gaya, Prayag, the Bridge, Kurukshetra, Mansarovar; Kashi, Kanchi, Dwaraka, Maya, Mathura, Ayodhya, the Gomati, Avantika, Kedar, the Himalaya; the Narmada, the many woods, the shrines of the gods, Kailash, Nila, Mount Mandara, Sumeru the great peak — the holy place, the meaning, truth, dharma, mercy and contentment: not all of them together weigh against the dust of the beloved Guru's feet.

As maiden girls meet and play, many friends together, but all are not wed on one single day; as the champions who go into the field of war, not all die, for all their weapons and armour; as, near the sandal, are plants of many kinds, but it does not make them sandal at a single stroke — so the world goes to the refuge of the Guru's feet, but he alone wins the state of freedom who truly longs for it.

As the cowherd grazes his cattle with care, and they do not stray into the field, but all graze their fill; as the king, of the form of dharma, in his statecraft, and in his land the people dwell in peace; as the boatman is watchful and alert, and the ship on which he sets out crosses over unhindered — so the Guru, absorbed in the state beyond the mind, the Light of Brahm, makes his Sikhs freed while still living, teaching them.

As a wound on the wounded, tended, heals well, but the scar, once formed, is seen never to fade; as a torn cloth, sewn and worn again, no longer leaves one naked, yet the patch is seen; as a broken vessel, mended by the tinsmith, no longer leaks, yet its knotted mend is plain — so one who turns from the Guru's feet, seeing his grief, again grasps the refuge, and is made pure, yet the stain is written in his record.

Seeing and seeing the darshan with the eyes, he knew not its greatness; hearing and hearing the Word, he knew not its glory. Singing and singing the virtues of the Ocean of virtue, laughing and laughing, he did not recognise the power of love. Weeping and weeping, he knew not the grief of separation; gripping and gripping the mind, the fool did not accept it. By the knowledge and lore of people and Vedas he could not know it — cursed the birth and life spent turned away.

I offer up a million million dazzlings of the gem, a million million shinings of the moon and the sun. A million million fortunes, a full splendour of beauty, the shimmering Light, the dwelling of fair fame. Shiva, the sons of Sanak, Brahma, in their longing, a million million holy places long for it — for him on whose brow, in the beauty of the darshan, wisdom past all measure, the mere dust of the beloved Guru's feet is laid.

Bird, deer, fish, moth, the moving and the unmoving — through many wombs I wandered and came. Hearing and hearing, I ran far, from the nether world to the earth's surface and up to the city of the gods. Yoga and pleasure, pain and joy, dharma and unrighteousness and good deeds I earned. Beaten, I fell at the refuge — and, beholding the Guru's face, I found the great joy.

Longing and longing for the moon-face, in eagerness, the partridge tastes the nectar-rays and is not sated. Hearing and hearing the unstruck Word, the ear-deer, joy dawning, cannot be contained in peace. Relishing the sweet fame, chanting it day and night, the rain-bird-tongue, by its art, is not fulfilled. Beholding, hearing and singing, finding joy — held by the taste of love, the mind is absorbed, lost.

As the fish's love of dwelling in water does not lessen, as the moth's love of the lamp's light does not lessen; as the bee is never sated with the flower's fragrance, as the bird's hope of flying the sky does not lessen; as the peacock and the rain-bird are gladdened by the thundering cloud, and the deer's delight in the sound does not lessen — so the saints, relishers of the sweet taste of the Beloved's love: the strong thirst in their every limb never lessens.

Behold the nature of water: it does not sink the wood, but takes it up and says, 'I have upheld my own.' It cherishes the fire in the wood's own heart, then, taking the wood into the fire, burns it up. It dips the aloe-wood in water and draws it out, raising its worth, and, burning it in the fire, distils it the more. Yet, for all its blood shed drop by drop, it becomes attar, meeting the water — so it counts virtue in the graceless: it weighs its own nature.

Behold the nature of water, its virtue of flowing low: it is poured to water the young sapling planted in the grove. Meeting the water, the tree does its upward striving, its new branches grow fruitful and bow low. Striking the stone, the fruitful; cut, it becomes a boat; boring through iron-slag, it binds the bonds of the ferry. Seizing son and foe in its mighty current, it carries them across — so the True Guru redeems even the Sikh's slanderer, teaching him.

The Guru's teaching entered, the dwelling of awe, in loving devotion, awe and eager joy, grown radiant. Union and joy, natural trance perfected, relishing the nectar of love's taste, full of relish. The discernment of Brahm the support, the One and the many, love, spotless detachment, fair, radiant with beauty. A marvel-beyond-marvels state, most wondrous, filled with wonder, bodiless, blossoming beyond the mind.

As long as, making wishes, the wish-seeker did his deeds, no purpose was fulfilled, no work came to good. As long as, making hopes, hopeful, he grasped a support, he was tossed, wandering place to place, and found no rest. As long as, making 'mine,' he took the burden of possession on his head, he was fined, broken to pieces, grieved place upon place. By the Guru's teaching, made desireless and free of hope, in humility, natural ease and joy, his own true state, the Name.

Drawn to the nectar-dust of the True Guru's lotus-feet, the bee-mind clings there. Drinking the treasure-nectar day and night, a relisher, most intoxicated, all other knowledge forgotten. Held by a natural love, filled with wonder, bodiless, like the swati-drop merged in the cup of the oyster. At the refuge of the feet, the ocean of peace, by His gracious glance, become a pearl, a great one, of matchless form.

A million mouths in every pore, a tongue in every mouth, endless — even to the end of endless ages it cannot be told. If the weight of a million universes were cast in the balance, and weighed again and again, it would not equal the weight. The four boons, and all the joys of the seas, and the varied heavens — their worth and glory reach it not. It passes understanding — who moves, in what dwelling — until the perfect Brahm, the Guru, lets the Word be heard.

The eye, a moth, went to behold the darshan of the lamp; Light merging in Light, it came not down again. The ear-deer went to hear the sound; hearing the strain, it was stilled, and returned no more. The bee-mind, a relisher of the nectar-dust of the lotus-feet, folded into the cup of bliss. Form, virtue, the taste of love, the perfect supreme state — the taste of all other knowledge and meditation, the delusion, is forgotten.

First undoing all other thought, in the way of the moth, then the lamp shows its matchless form. First forsaking all other knowledge and awareness, then the unstruck sound is sounded, in the way of the deer. First making Hari's word and speech mute, then He makes one drink the undrinkable nectar-taste. Beholding, hearing and drinking, filled with utter wonder, one is merged in the marvel-beyond-marvels, the astonishment.

As the wedded bride, at the hour of the bed, at night, finds no pleasure in talk of the Guru or of good folk; as the partridge, at the moon's rising, is gladdened in heart, and, fixed in a single gaze, keeps not the sense of its body; as the bee, drawn to the honey-nectar taste, in wonder, is shut in the folded cup of the lotus-petals — so the Sikh goes to the refuge of the Guru's feet, and, at the darshan's touch, smiles in the taste of love.

At whose door the beggar comes to beg, meek — seeing the lowly, He does not turn the humble away hopeless. At whose door the dog sits down in hope, at the last, in mercy, He breaks a morsel and casts it to it. The shoe left cast off, lying at the foot, is picked up and kept for whatever task there be — so, casting off pride, becoming dust on the Guru's path, one day, in His mercy, the Merciful sets down His foot.

When Draupadi gave the sage but a strip of cloth, from it flowed in the assembly a boundless stream of raiment. When Sudama gave the Lord of the world a little rice, from it he gained the four boons, unfathomable. When the grieving elephant held up a lotus and offered it, for his sake the Discus-holder came, though the crocodile gripped him. What can any do? Nothing comes of any doing — he whose offering the Lord accepts, all joys are his.

Shravan served his mother and father especially well; and so his fame is sung in the world. The servant Prahlad was disdained from first to last, yet the Lord, thwarting the father's murder, kept His vow to him. For twelve years Sukhdev grieved his mother, yet became an adept the very instant of his birth. The untellable tale, a wonder, cannot be known — no other's knowledge or reckoning reaches it.

Saying 'sugar, sugar,' the tongue tastes no sweetness; saying 'fire, fire,' the cold is not undone. Saying 'physician, physician,' no one's disease is cured; saying 'wealth, wealth,' one does not delight in wealth. Saying 'sandal, sandal,' the fragrant scent breaks not forth; saying 'moon, moon,' the light does not shine. So, making learned discourse, one does not gain the true way of living — action is supreme, as the sun rising in the sky.

Laughing, one asks, laughing and laughing and making laugh; weeping, one asks, weeping and making weep. Sitting, one asks, sitting and sitting, going near; walking, one asks, walking, running the ten directions. People ask the ways of people, the Vedas the way of the Vedas, yogi and pleasure-seeker joining the arts of yoga and pleasure. None could wipe out the delusion of birth and death — the unshaken are they who are merged in the Guru's feet.

The traveller asks, yet sets no foot upon that road — how, by mere talk, could one go to the Beloved's land? He asks the physician, yet eats the medicine without restraint — how could the disease be cured and ease be won? The forsaken wife asks the happy bride, yet with adultery in her heart — how could she be called to the bed? Singing, hearing, closing the eyes, one gains not the supreme state, so long as, grasping the Guru's teaching, one does not live it.

The seeker, having sought and seen, went on and reached his goal; making sloth and delay, the trail is wiped away. At the hour of the bed the choice wife dallies with her husband — but if in ignorance she keeps her pride, it shows plain at dawn. As the cloud rains, the rain-bird drinks and is filled; keeping silence, once the rain is past, it cries out. A Sikh is he who, hearing the Guru's Word, keeps the code; making deceitful love, he repents in the end.

As the calf, straying and parted, at another cow's udder does not drink the milk, but kicks it with its foot; as the swan, leaving Mansarovar, going to another pool, does not eat, for there is no pearl to feed its body; as a servant, leaving the king's door, going to another door, has his honour broken, and gains no greatness in anything — so the Guru's Sikh who goes to the refuge of some other god is not upheld, and the sinner cannot save him.

As the peacock and the rain-bird love the thundering cloud, but the falling rain shows itself without love; as the lotus, dwelling within the water as if a world apart, wakes its love for the bee and the sun; as the frog, dishonoured, lives feeding on air, yet leaves the water and dies, not shaming its love — so is the deceitful lover, the servant of other gods; but the Guru's Sikh is steady, as the fish is fixed on the water.

The eunuch knows not the dalliance of the wife; how should the barren know the joy and love of offspring? What lineage can be told of the harlot's child; and there is no cure for the leper's body. The blind knows not form and colour, nor the beauty of the smile; the deaf, content, knows not the joy of a delight it cannot hear. The servant of other gods knows not the service of the divine Guru — as the caper-bush does not long for the rain.

As the calf, straying, falls to another cow's udder, but, meeting its mother again, she holds no talk of it against it; as one, wandering to other pools, comes to Mansarovar, and the swan gives its priceless pearl, weighing no fault; as, to the king's servant come defeated from another door, He gives fourfold, holding no disdain in His heart — so the True Guru, refuge of the refugeless, the merciful Lord, holds no forgetting of his Sikhs in His heart.

The barren wife, the eunuch husband, can have no offspring — churning water, where is the butter to break forth? Made to drink milk by force, the snake's poison is not undone; eating the radish, no sweet fragrance comes from the mouth. Sitting by Mansarovar, the crow is ill at ease; the perfumed paste laid on the donkey — its home is the ash. The servant of other gods knows not the service of the divine Guru — the hard, ill habit does not leave the god's own slave.

As the towering clouds are seen gathering in the sky, and, thundering and thundering, pass away without rain; as the Himalaya is hard and most cold — one cannot eat it, and, eaten, it stills no thirst; as the dew falls and makes the body wet, but, kept, it holds no place for long — so is the service of other gods, its fruit of the three qualities, fleeting; the True Guru's is a stream of nectar, night and morning.

The Vaishnav, exclusive, the Brahmin in the service of the salagram, the hearer of the Gita and Bhagavat, is called single-minded; but for the holy place, the dharma, the pilgrimage to the gods, he asks the pandit, and sets out only at the sanctioned hour. Going out, he raises doubt at the omen of donkey or dog, and turns back and comes home again. He cannot hold the one-support faithfulness — with double-mindedness intact, he gains not the supreme state.

The power of meeting in the Guru's Sikh company is such — a faithfulness, one support, double-mindedness undone. He asks not the astrologer nor the Veda for lunar day and weekday; he holds no dread of house or star in his heart. He knows not omen or auspicious hour, nor the service of other gods — his mind on the Word, his love the Formless One's. The Sikh, the saint, a child, cherished by the beloved Guru, freed while still living, a contemplator of Brahm.

As, in a wife's love for her husband, she is a faithful one, so the Guru's Sikh is absorbed in the one-support faithfulness. Melody, sound, dispute and discourse — a faithful one; without the Guru's Word, the Sikh gives no ear, lowly. Form, colour, limb, the whole frame, the faithful one beholds; the servant of other gods has not made the darshan. Good folk and kin move about the house, the faithful one; the station of other gods is, to her, as a fish without water.

Among such brides, the maiden vessel is the worthy vessel, good, thirsting in hope — mother and father give her to one alone. Among such brides, the forsaken one, in her meekness, is good — the Beloved, purifier of the fallen, takes her and sets her at His feet. Better than such brides is the grief of separation, its pang, its longing — the auspicious hour discerned, borne up with faith. Such a bride, rotted in the mother's very womb, is better than deceitful love and double-mindedness, like Rahu and Ketu.

As the well-water, drawn up with effort, waters the field, but reaches only one, not another; as the traveller, the thirsty rain-bird, sits by in hope, but, without virtue, how could a vessel fill the life with peace — so all the gods do not leave their fixed nature; served, they give fruit only to the measure of the wish. But the perfect Brahm, the Guru, is a rain of nectar; raining in love, gladly He gives every treasure.

As the owl by day is pleasing to no one to behold, so is the servant of other gods in the holy company. As the crow, though present, its cawing pleases no one, so the servant of other gods when he speaks in pride. Cutting and licking, the dog's love is a love turned wrong; so the servant of other gods, by his ill habit, is not pleasing. As the crane does not adorn the swan-garland, and the cheat is caught and cast out — so the servant of other gods.

As the owl knows not the risen light of the sun, so the servant of other gods perceives nothing in the holy company. As the monkey knows not the glory of the ruby-gem, so the servant of other gods in the discourse of the Word. As the serpent-king knows not the greatness of the leaf, so the servant of other gods amid the great sacrament. Without the swan-line, the crane and the cheat cannot hold in the waves of the unreachable, unfathomable ocean of peace.

As a city is one, but its shops are many, and countless buyers come to sell and to buy; and the one you sell to but do not ask for goods, you go to buy from another, seeking the eye's ease; but the one whose shop holds all wares, where all is bought and sold, buying and selling, you seek the heart's content there — so, leaving the service of other gods, the True Guru, the perfect banker, in whom is every treasure to take and to give.

In the trade and dealing of jewels, becoming an appraiser of gems, he did not gain the appraisal of the jewel of his birth. Becoming scribes and writers like Chitragupta, the record-keepers, they did not wipe out the dread of birth and death. Mighty champions of the warrior-art, wielders of the bow, they slew not ego, nor fixed their love in natural ease. The service of the perfect Brahm, the divine Guru, in the age of strife, amid Maya detached — the Guru's Sikhs have shown it.

As another tree bears fruit only when its season comes, but the ever-fruiting one is always in fruit, and sweet; as the well-water comes forth only by effort, but the Ganga's water is the grace of a freeing current; as clay, fire, cotton-wick and oil, meeting, make the lamp shine, and the shimmering light of the moon is a wonder — so the service of other gods gives fruit, as much as it gives, but the True Guru's darshan is not under the rule of death.

In the five-fold spread they became like the great Mahabharata, but, slaying the five, none undid his double-mindedness. Leaving the home, the nine Naths, the adepts, becoming lords of yoga, did not fix, past the three qualities, their meditation on their own true seat. Reading and reading the Veda, the pandit instructs the world, but cannot bring it to the full truth; his mind's craving is not conquered. The service of the perfect Brahm, the divine Guru, the holy company, the mind on the Word — a contemplator of Brahm.

Beholding the perfect Brahm as equal, become even-eyed, worn out contemplating the untellable tale, he keeps silence. Whatever is to be, is; and so, made hopeless amid hope, knowing the Lord the Cause of causes, he has slain his ego. Subtle and gross, become the form of Ik Onkar, grown of the discerning mind of Brahm, a keeper of continence. The spread of the banyan-seed is Brahm; Maya is its shadow — the Gurmukh holds the one support and undoes double-mindedness.
