Chapter 10

The Refuge of the Helpless

Forty-five poems on the Guru who is the refuge of the helpless — the support of the supportless, the master of the masterless, merciful to the meek — and who tends every Sikh as a mother her babe in arms. Here the dignity of the householder's path, foremost among all dharmas; the great sinners redeemed whatever their birth; the devotee whom no stroke of fate can harm; and the longing cry, 'When will the dust of His feet touch my brow?'

As the child, seeing the snake or the fire, runs to it, and the mother, catching and holding it back, makes the child cry out; as the ailing creature craves forbidden food, and, when the physician keeps it in restraint, is not pleased; as the blind, not knowing the path from the wrong path, seized by the waist, is led along a stumbling way — so, holding the longing for gold and woman, the Guru's Sikh is kept unstained, though the mind frets.

As a mother and father raise their many sons and, giving them capital, set them to trade and business, and one, working, loses the principal and weeps, while another, gaining, multiplies it fourfold; and whatever the way of each one's line, by his deeds, so his good name or ill name is made plain — so the True Guru is even-eyed, of the nature of a flower; his Sikhs, the branches, bear the varied fruit of the tree.

As a king weds many wives, but the one in whose house a son is born holds the rule of the house; as through the four quarters of the sea the ship sails, and the one that reaches the shore has all its tasks fulfilled; as the digger digs the endless mine in his search, and he in whose hand the diamond comes has music and pomp — so the Guru's Sikhs, the new and the old: on whom His gracious glance falls, theirs is the beauty and the grace.

Drop by drop the rain falls, and the water runs down the gutters, then swells and flows, coming lane by lane. From it the streams fill and flow through the four quarters, and stream meets stream, going and joining. All the streams' waters, a mighty current, flow on, and, meeting the sea, become one, merged and equal. As each is filled, so is its greatness and worth — the shallow and the deep and steady are known by their call.

As a diamond in the hand shows small, yet, valued, its flashing fills the treasury; as a bill of exchange, tied up, carries no weight, yet, presented ahead, yields boundless wealth; as the banyan-seed is of a most subtle form, yet, sown, spreads out into a great tree — so the Guru's Word is true among the Guru's Sikhs; its greatness is known once they have gone to Hari's door.

As one drinking wine does not know its secret, but afterwards, grown drunk, is wholly taken by it; as the wife, meeting her husband, knows not the secret, till the conceived child shows itself by other signs; as the ruby in the hand carries no heavy weight, yet in worth, count and flash the eye is lost — so the Sikh who hears and honours the Guru's nectar-words knows their greatness once he is merged in the ocean of peace.

As fish, tortoise, crane, swan, pearl and stone, in the water, are known by the light of the one sea; as the swimmer and the mirror, the armour, weapon and iron, from one thing, are told as many makings; as vessels of many kinds are made from one clay, and milk, water, dishes and medicine are held alike — so the many kinds of darshan, station and dharma are all, know it, branches of the householder's way.

As among all pools and streams the sea is the greatest, and among mountains the world calls Sumeru the greatest; as among trees the sandal is the greatest, and among metals gold is prized as the finest; as among birds the swan, among beasts the lion-tiger, among raags Sri Raag, and the touchstone among stones — so among all knowledge the Guru's knowledge, among all meditation the Guru's, and among all dharmas the householder's is foremost.

The virtue of bathing at a holy place is this: the body made clean, the thirst and the burning stilled. The virtue of taking a mirror and a lamp in hand is this: beholding the marks, one keeps the awareness of the way. The virtue of the wife meeting her husband is this: like the swati-drop in the oyster, she cherishes the pride of the womb. So the virtue of the refuge of the Guru's feet is this: by the Guru's teaching, one wears the garland on the heart.

As a mother and father do not weigh the child's faults, but cherish the son in love, laughing and making him laugh; as the ailing creature tells the physician his trouble, and, tested and diagnosed, is treated with an elixir; as many pupils in one school are made learned by the teacher, who teaches them in love — so He wipes away the faults and ignorance of the Guru's Sikhs, teaching them the discernment of Brahm in natural ease.

As, though the son does many childish, foolish things, the mother holds no fault of his in her heart; as the brave one, keeping his vow to the full for the refugee, does not slay or cast him off for his many wrongs; as the river-water does not sink the wood, but, as if in shame, upholds its own — so, by the touch of the supreme Guru, the touchstone, the deeds and doings of the Sikhs are held of no account.

Whoever is fair in the conduct of his family's dharma and deeds is called the noblest in the household. Whoever, in trade and dealing, stands ever true before the true banker, is reckoned an honest, guileless agent. Whoever is alert to his master's work, the king honours; he is known and famed as the one who does his lord's task. And in whose heart the Guru's teaching has entered — his mind on the Word — he alone is known as a Sikh in the world.

As water is in the earth and earth in the water, reckon their meeting a love, one with the other. As water, poured, nurtures the tamal-tree, yet does not sink the wood nor burn it in the flame; as, welded and shaped from iron, a ship is made, and iron carries others across the boundless sea — so the servant is known by the Lord, and the Lord by the servant; and so He weighs not the virtue or the fault of the servant.

As at a wedding songs are sung on both sides, and it is known that one side gains and one side loses honour; as on both sides the war-drums and the tunes resound, yet victory is one's and defeat another's; as on both banks of a river the laden boats set out, and one is known to reach mid-stream and one the far shore — so, by dharma and unrighteousness, by deeds, the unholy and the holy, the high and the low rank are made plain and famed.

A line in stone is carried out from first to last — the saint's love does not slip, nor his quarrel with the wicked. As a line on water holds no steadiness — such is the base one's love, and his war with the saint. The cactus, uprooted, does good and does harm — so, in his own nature, the saint, and the base one's mischief. The gunja-berry and the ruby, in the world's balance, weighed as equal — such is the worth of the shallow and the deep.

As the noble bride sets her sixteen adornments on her limbs, so too the harlot does all her adorning. The noble bride, in the hour of the bed, dallies with one husband; the harlot commits her adultery with many. The noble bride's union is a fair name, a spotless freedom; touching the harlot brings ill fame and corruption. So to the Guru's Sikhs Maya is supremely pure — but to another it is a giver of pain, burning the world.

The same iron, in the world, takes the many forms of bondage; the same iron takes the light of gold at the touchstone's touch. The same finery adorns the faithful wife most fair; the same ornament the harlot sets on her limbs. The same swati-drop, meeting the sea, becomes a pearl; the same swati-drop, meeting the snake, becomes poison. So the working of Maya is corruption in the world; but to the Guru's Sikhs it is, through and through, a doing of good.

As the crow, going to sit in the swan-assembly of Mansarovar, is uneasy and ill at ease, its mind on the scent of filth; as the dog, set on a fair couch, leaves it to go and lick the millstone, blind in its meanness; as the donkey, when the perfumed paste is laid on its limbs, rolls in the ashes, by the ill habit of its frame — so the base one has no love for the holy company in his heart, his mind bound to mischief and to sin.

The support of the supportless, the hope of the hopeless, the Master of the masterless, merciful to the meek. The refuge of the refugeless, the wealth of the poor, the prop of the blind, gracious to the miser. The giver even to the ungrateful, the purifier of the fallen, the Lord who saves from hell, keeping His vow, the sustainer. The remover of faults, doing good to the graceless, the Master, the companion of all, the relisher, sweet with the taste of love.

The charcoal, cold, blackens the hand that takes it; hot, touched, it burns and scorches. The dog, licking the body, brings its defilement; cutting the flesh, it gives a pain no patience can bear. As a pitcher breaks the moment the stone falls on it, and, the stone falling again, the pitcher is undone — so, with the base one, both love and enmity are evil; in this world and the next, the pain and the fault do not pass.

As, in place of a royal parasol, one sits in the shade of a mushroom; as, in exchange for a priceless diamond, one takes a bit of glass; as, in place of the gem of the mind, one is draped in glass and gunja-berries, and, in place of silk robes, a coarse blanket; as, in place of nectar-sweets and drinks, one is given the bitter kari-fruit, and, for saffron and camphor, the zedoary is smeared on — so, meeting the base one, the subtle merit of joy is lost, as if the boundless sea were swallowed into a creeper's cup.

As a golden pitcher, dented, is straightened again, but a clay pitcher, once broken, is joined by no device; as a soiled garment, washed, becomes clean, but the black blanket does not turn white by any dipping; as a stick, held to the fire, is made straight, but the dog's tail, plain to all, keeps its crook of body and mind — so the nature of the Guru's Sikhs is like water or wax, and the nature of the faithless like lac and stone.

One forges and sells weapons, the bow and arrow; another forges and sells armour of many kinds. One sells the milk-yield — milk, curd and ghee — daily; another sells wine, its craving as bitter as it is keen. So the doer of harm and the doer of good, the base and the holy — poison and nectar are seen in the same wood, deep-set. The unaware soul, a bird, runs through the four quarters, and on whatever tree it sits, it tastes that tree's fruit.

As a mother has many sons, dearest of all is the babe in her lap. The clever sons are lost in the thoughts of trade and dealing; the babe in her lap has no wealth, only a helpless love. Lulling it in the cradle, the mother goes to the house-work, then, hearing the child cry, comes and gladly suckles it. So whoever, losing the self, grasps the refuge of the Guru's feet stays flawless, in the freedom of bliss and delight.

Wishing for nothing, knowing not friend from foe, without a grown mind's sense — the unaware child. Taking its food and clothing, the mother follows it about, speaking nectar-words from her mouth in love of her son. She who blesses the child seems most dear; she who scolds it — offered up in love though she be — is cast aside as ill-omened. So the Guru's Sikh is even-eyed, full of bliss — as the world regards him, so the fruit comes to the field.

As a bright mirror, held facing the sun, brings forth fire by the play of the rays; as, the cloud raining, the earth is arrayed with plants of many kinds, fruitful and kindly; as the wife, meeting her husband, is adorned in fair finery, and a full joy rises with the wondrous son — so, touching the True Guru's darshan, the Sikh blossoms, gaining the treasure of knowledge, pure and holy.

As the wise noble bride, in her in-laws' house, stays alert and watchful in fair conduct; serves father-, brother- and elder-in-law, knowing the ways of food and drink, the honour of the household; sweet in her words, modest with the Guru's people, and, in the hour of the bed, full of the love and taste of her husband — so the Guru's Sikh is skilled in the worship of the Soul of all, in the meditation on Brahm, the boundless form of the Guru.

The world goes on pilgrimage to holy places, holy days and gods — a million million holy places, holy days and gods. It longs for liberation, heaven, the arts of yoga and varied fruit — the dust of the saints, a million knowings and meditations. Unreachable, unfathomable, the holy company, countless Sikhs — meeting the beloved Guru's Word, they bring the taste of Ram. Natural trance, love fixed on the boundless Being — the perfect Brahm, the True Guru, ever alert.

If the eyes had a tongue and ears, as they saw, so they would tell and sing and hear; if the ears had a tongue and eyes, mercifully, as they heard, so they would see, tell and make understood; if the tongue had eyes and ears, divinely, as it spoke, so it would hear, see and show. Eye, tongue and ear; ear, eye and tongue — the tongue longs for the ear and the eye it does not have.

As one's own child seems dear, and is felt so in the heart, know that the whole world is dear to itself just so. As one's own wealth is kept with care, so understand every other's dealing just the same. As, hearing praise and blame, joy and grief take hold, so it strikes the world in its many kinds. As each one's family dharma and deeds are, so hold each dear as noble, knowing all as the spread of Brahm.

As the peacock's eyes, voice and feathers are fair through all its frame — beholding its feet, do not dwell on the flaw; as the sandal is fragrant and the lotus most tender — seeing the thorn, do not hold the fault in the heart; as the nectar-fruit is sweet, of fine qualities and taste — do not weigh the bitterness of its seed as an evil — so ask the gift of the Guru's knowledge from everyone, and bow to all beings; do not look to slander.

Where now the touchstone-touch, the darshan, O friend; where now those eyes, those words that steal the mind? Where now those teeth, that smile, the store of beauty; where now that going that made the mansion and the wood so fair? Where now that melody, colour, the ocean of joy; where now that mercy and grace that watched over grief? Where now that yoga and pleasure, the taste, the play; where now the beauty of the saints' assembly, close-gathered?

When will the dust of His feet touch my brow; when will these eyes behold the merciful darshan? When will these ears hear the nectar-words; when will this tongue speak its special plea? When will these hands make their bowing and homage, and again trace the round of reverence at His feet? Loving devotion, the Lord of breath before me — knowledge, meditation: I mark that as the state of life.

As the wind strikes the tree, the birds, night by night, cannot settle with steadiness on a resting-place; as the heat strikes the pool, the lotus is downcast, and, life at its end, the water-creatures fret; as the tiger looks at the herd of deer, and in the forest, out of fear, no dwelling pleases — so, at the play of the Guru's going, the Sikhs are struck with awe, wasting in grief, crying out in their sorrow.

Hail and rain, the pull of lightning, the wind, the ocean's waves, the fire burning the wood; kingdoms and realms, earthquakes, inner distress, imprisonment, punishment, sunk in peril; bowed by calamity, the meek, fault, poverty, blemish, wandering, forlorn, in debt, enslaved, naked — so, when the unseen stroke of fate comes upon creation, in the world not a hair of the devotees is harmed.

As the ant climbs the tree step by step, while the bird flies up and sits just so beside the fruit; as the cart goes on in its ruts with patience, while the horse, in its strength, runs off to left and right; as one cannot walk a mile on foot, yet the soul runs the four quarters in an instant — so, past the knowledge and lore of people and Vedas, one reaches the ground of the refuge of the Guru's feet.

As the woodland, flowering for the sake of the fruit, once the fruit comes, sheds its leaf and flower; as the woman, adorned in finery for love of her husband, meeting him, can scarcely contain the garland at her breast; as the unaware child does its many plays, then, when a care comes to mind, forgets them all — so the six rites, the toil of dharma for the sake of knowledge: at the rising of the sun of knowledge, deeds fly up and away.

As, at a laughing word, the witch snatches the liver, and the child runs to her, thinking she takes it in her lap; as the mother gives the weeping child its medicine, and the child thinks she is giving it deadly poison — so the True Guru's way of destroying and sustaining is not known; the world, in childish sense, is unaware. The art beyond art, the Unseen, most unfathomable wisdom — He alone knows Himself: 'not this, not this, not this.'

The demon's son, Prahlad, became a manifest devotee; a god's son is known in the world as Saturn, the inauspicious. Kans of Mathura became a base and demonic one; Vibhishan of Lanka is known as a servant of the Lord. In the deep sea the poison broke forth; and on the snake's head the jewel is said to rise. Caste and station, small and great — try as one may, the untellable tale of delight, a wonder, is not to be known.

Contemplating the Wish-jewel steals worry from the heart; adoring the Unborn, the peril of the womb is cut away. Chanting the Timeless, the thorn and grief of death are gone; the fearless remembrance drives off the host of doubt and fear. Remembering the Lord without enmity, one lets go all hate; division and pain flee; singing the flawless One's virtues. Grasping the hem of the Casteless One, none weighs your caste — the unshakable refuge wipes out coming and going.

He longs not for a home in heaven, nor fears the terror of hell; his mind makes no hope — whatever is to be, will be. In riches, no elation; in ruin, no grief; joy and pain alike to him — he neither laughs nor weeps. Birth and youth, death and freedom, no difference, no pain; reaching through the three times, he beholds them with a child's clear mind. By the salve of the Guru's knowledge he perceives the Immaculate — rare is such a one in the world, in the love and devotion of God.

As sweets are hidden and kept with care, yet the ant goes, finds them and clings; as a lamp is lit and kept covered in the house, yet the moth, when it shows, merges into it in natural ease; as the lotus dwells apart in the pure clear water, yet the bee goes there to sip its honey — so, in whatever heart the Gurmukh's love shows forth, the whole world cries out at his door.

As war-drums are heard sounding on all four sides, and the risen chief sun cannot be hidden by hiding; as, by a lamp, a fire is known to the whole world, and, as the sun, it is not concealed by covering in an hour; as the sovereign is not hidden, upon his throne, and his proclamation through the land cannot be unmade — so the light of the Gurmukh's love for the Beloved, once shown, cannot stay hidden, though he keep the vow of silence.

If, seeing the lamp, the moth looks toward the west, it sets a stain on its life, its birth and its line; if, hearing melody and sound, the deer is caught in other knowledge, easing its life, it is not called pierced by the Word; if the fish, coming out of the water, stays alive, and, bearing the pain of grief, does not pine in separation — so one who forsakes the service, knowledge and meditation of the Guru and flees to double-mindedness gains not, in the company, the rank of the Gurmukh.

As behind one ant a million ants go on, with a single gaze, their steps swaying, watchful; as the line of cranes, in fair, peaceful, easy order, flies the sky, with a leader out in front; as the herd of deer moves on and does not swerve, the foremost roaming here and there, its whole mind fixed — the ant, the bird, the deer follow the leader face-to-front; but the creature who leaves the Guru's path walks on in ignorance.
