Flashing a moment, taking on fault and pain, gaining ill fame, the unholy blacken their faces in this world and the next. Thief, adulterer and gambler, drunk on wine, through evil deeds they run to quarrel, strife and double-mindedness. Losing wit and honour, hemmed in with shame in the assembly, nose and ears cut, punished, yet feeling no shame. The holy company, giver of every treasure — why not come and walk toward the Guru's Sikh, the saintly one?

As all at once the clouds rise and spread, towering in the sky, a swelling darkness; and from them the Word's ring thunders in the cloud, and the lightning flashes, most fickle in its play; the rain — nectar-water, pearls and camphor — and from it healing herbs of many kinds spring up — so the divine body of the saint, past birth and death, appears in the world to do good for others.

As the fruitful tree, stoned, still gives its fruit, and, though the saw is set to its head, bears it and ferries others across; as the oyster, drawn from the sea, its mouth broken open, gives up its pearl, holding no thought of the scorn; as the digger digs and strikes the mine, and the priceless ruby and diamond do good to others; as in the cane is the nectar, and, pressed in the mill, it yields — so the saints turn the harm done them into good at their door.

Whose daily rule is the darshan of the holy company — he is a beholder, an even-eyed meditator. In whose mind dwells the discerning Word, the one support — honouring the Guru's knowledge, he is a knower of Brahm. His gaze fixed on the darshan and his mind on the Word — the lover, in the Beloved's love, risen beyond the mind. In natural trance, in the holy company, of one single colour — that one is the Gurmukh, spotless, in freedom.

A meditator in darshan and its meditation, a knower in the Word's knowledge, firm at the refuge of the feet, amid Maya detached. Renouncing ego, the renouncer, a lover of wonder, detached, past the three qualities in mind, a practiser of fearless awareness. Untouched by double-mindedness, restraining the senses like a saint, worshipping the Self, discerning, a renouncer in the Void. In natural ease, freed while still living, his service to the Soul of all, a truster in Brahm.

As a stone lies in water age upon age, yet is never pierced — hard of heart, it sinks by its own adamant weight; as the bitter gourd, bathed at the sixty-eight holy places, does not lose its bitterness, washed this shore and that; as the snake, day and night, coils round the sandal, yet never leaves its poison, in its ego and pride — so the body of deceitful love is fruitless in the world, the foe of the saints, in double-mindedness and corruption.

As in a spotless mirror there is no picture, yet it shows every form set before it; as clear water, itself past all colour, meeting each colour, takes on that colour; as the earth, itself past taste and scent, brings forth herbs of many tastes and fragrances — so is the service of the divine Guru, the Unseen, the mysterious: with whatever love you come, that longing He fulfils.

Joy, sorrow, loss and death are written beforehand; the puppets are not in their own power — the Player is the Lord of the world. One reaps what is bound to be, by the way of one's deeds; as one acts, so is the stain — and the Lord is the Cause. Is the Doer supreme, or the deed, or the soul; who adds, who takes away — which mind can be wholly sure? What, then, do praise and blame touch, or joy and grief; when all is as it must be, what is a curse or a blessing?

Set at Mansarovar, the crane, taken there, leaves the priceless pearl and picks and eats the fish. Put to the breast to be suckled, the leech does not drink milk, but takes its fill of blood. On supreme fragrance the fly will not stay, but on great stench it hurries and settles fast. As the elephant, freshly bathed, throws dust upon its own head — so the foe of the saints finds the saints' company no joy.

The Guru's wisdom is true, the one support; there is no second — beyond Shiva and Shakti, a practiser of fearless awareness. Past the three qualities, no win or loss, no joy or grief; wiping out union and parting, a dweller in natural ease. The four castes become one caste in the holy company; forsaking the five-fold spread, a truster in wonder. Past the six schools of sight, crossing the seven seas and the nine gates, at the tenth, detached.

The meeting of kin and folk is a boat upon a river; what you have given, that alone you find when you go on ahead. Food, clothing and wealth do not go with you; give and offer them, bring them to the house of dharma. Of the eight watches, the sixty ghadis, fruitless the attachment to Maya — fruitful the moment merged in the holy company. The vessel of filth, the corrupt, become the Formless One's, fixing the mind on the Word in the love of the holy company.

Leaving the high place of ego and pride, the barren wood, one folds into the cup of the Guru's lotus-feet. Beholding the utterly matchless form, the eyes are lost; the unstruck sound humming, the ears are stilled and sated. The tongue in wonder at the honey-nectar taste; the nose astonished, breathing out its sweet fragrance. Tenderness and coolness fill every limb — the bee-mind runs no more, never, nowhere else.

The scent of craving, the company of the thieves, the hour of ruin — one has found the Guru's lotus-feet, the one support. The terrible waves of the sea of fear cannot touch him; in his own true home, the cup, double-mindedness is undone. All other knowledge, meditation, remembrance and forgetting — held by the taste of love, hope and wishing find no place. There is no second; the one support, the wisdom unshaken, natural trance, the love fixed in the state beyond the mind.

Anointing the brow with the dust of the lotus-feet, the black writ of doubt and deeds is wiped away. The nectar of the lotus-feet makes the stained mind spotless, and undoes the thieves and double-mindedness. The lotus-feet, the cup of bliss, the home of natural ease, the wisdom unshaken, the one support made firm. The glory of the Guru's lotus-feet is wisdom past all measure — the giver of every treasure and all fruit.

Bathing in the dust of the lotus-feet, the body made divine, the vessels of great filth were made the Formless One's. Drinking the treasure-nectar of the lotus-feet, the mind past the three qualities, they beheld their own Self. The lotus-feet, one's own seat, the throne — skilled, reaching through the three worlds and the three times. The lotus-feet, their taste, scent, form and coolness — no second; the one support, love fixed there.

The power of bathing in the dust of the lotus-feet is great — a million ancient holy places are the refuge of those feet. The power of bathing in the dust of the lotus-feet is great — gods and goddesses, as servants, worship the feet. The power of bathing in the dust of the lotus-feet is great — He makes the Cause of causes bow to the meek. The power of bathing in the dust of the lotus-feet is great — the fallen made pure, a ferry to carry across.

The swans of Mansarovar, the holy company, the supreme swans, come to the house of dharma with the flag of dharma. There, the pearl and the aloe; here, no second — the mind on the Guru's Word, the love fixed. There they tell of the sifting of milk from water; here the Guru's wisdom is made plain against base-mindedness. There the swan-line cannot undo the crane's double-mindedness; here the crow, dyed, is made one in an equal form.

The power of meeting in the Guru's Sikh company for an instant — Shiva, the sons of Sanak, Brahma do not attain it. Smriti, Puran, Veda, Shastra, sound and dispute, melody and mode, all sing it only as 'not this, not this.' Gods and goddesses, every treasure and all fruit, all the joys of heaven, hold it in meditation and meditate. Knowing the perfect Brahm, the True Guru, alert, the Guru's Sikhs fix their mind on the Word in love.

The play of creation, a wondrous, marvellous painting — none has made it like another; the One is many. Utterly hidden in each and every heart, actor and mime, hidden and revealed, plain and veiled, spread everywhere. A sight past all sight, a darshan past all darshan, a word past all word, and awareness beyond it. Form, mark, writ and garb, sound and mode of many kinds — unreachable, unfathomable wisdom, the discernment of Brahm.

The form of Truth, the True Guru, the meditation on the perfect Brahm; the True Name, from the True Guru, is the Supreme Brahm. The True Guru's Word, the unstruck, the knowledge of Brahm; the Gurmukh's path is true, its reach beyond all reach. The Guru's Sikh, the holy company, the seat of Brahm, is true; in the hour of kirtan, alert, all made equal. The Gurmukh's loving devotion, awe, love and eager joy is true; in natural ease, homage, homage to the Gurmukh.

Formless, without support, needing no food, without flaw, unborn, timeless, beyond the beyond, mysterious. Without attachment, without enmity, unstained, without fault, fearless, immaculate, past the very furthest, and thus so. Unseen, unreachable, imperceptible, unfathomable wisdom, imperishable, unfailing, whole and undying. A marvel of marvels, an astonishment past astonishment, a wondrous, marvel-beyond-marvels — such is the divine Guru.

The month of Kartik, the season of autumn, the full-moon night, the eight watches, the sixty ghadis — today is your turn. The rare auspicious hour, to be the bride of the great Lord — mistress of beauty, virtue, youth and adornment. Clever, skilled in reading, servant and friend, the sixty riches and wares, joy, natural ease, well-ordered. A fair mansion, an auspicious moment, union and joy — blessed the life and birth of the Beloved's darling.

The sun's rays are pleasing, giving joy to the limbs; the friend comes, and sets the adornment and ornaments on her. First the fragrant paste on her head, kneaded in, and the bath in warm, clean water, in a pure love. Flowers set in her hair, scenting the tresses, the perfumed paste laid on her limbs to wake her love. In fine robes, in the mirror, she beholds her own Self, and sits upon the couch, no longer running here and there.

With the comb she parts and untangles and smooths the hair; saffron and sandal she sets as a tilak on the brow. Collyrium for the wagtail eyes, a nose-ring, ear-flowers, a crest-jewel on the head, the betel at the mouth's door. A neck-band, an emerald and pearl, flowers of every colour, a beauty on the garland at her breast. Bangles and rings, the henna done, the matchless bodice, and the fine ornament at the small of her waist.

Radiant the autumn night, the shimmering light of the moon; first the friend says, 'Taste now the nectar of love. In His full grace the store of mercy has come to you — meet Him, unbroken, and keep no distance between. Drawn to the honey-nectar taste of the lotus-feet, let the bee-mind long for the cup of bliss. What is lost in shyness is not found again — so, offering a lotus, let each priceless instant with the Beloved be witnessed at your lips.'

As impure gold, tumbling in the crucible, once made pure, tumbles no more, but breaks into the shining of fire; as, among the many bangles on the arm, one ringing sounds, and, holding the one support, that ringing is stilled; as a hungry child cries and frets in its distress, then, suckled at the breast, comes to rest in ease — so, wandering through Maya, the mind runs the four quarters; the Guru's teaching is a steady dwelling in the home of the true state.

As a burning lamp lights the whole house, and all that is in the home is shown forth plain; warp and weft, its light — the wished-for tasks succeed, and joy, delight and ease pass the time in natural bliss; but, drawn by greed to the taste, the many moths — the moment it is snuffed, there is darkness, and they fret. So the great one, while present, is not known for his glory; only when he is gone do the people repent.

As a lamp burns, its greatness unknown to any, but the moment it is snuffed, one stumbles the dark night; as a tree in the courtyard — its worth unknown while it stands, but the moment it is felled, one cries for a shade to sit in; as, in the ways of statecraft, one is at ease, the parasol of the four quarters, then, the game overturned, must go here and there — so the Guru's Sikh, the art of the saints' assembly in the world: only when he is gone do the people repent.

If one knew the matchless form is beheld by the eyes, then, having eyes, why does the blind not see it? If one knew the taste of the Word is told by the tongue, then, having a tongue, why does the mute not speak it well? If one knew melody and sound are heard by the ear, then, with the ear intact, why does the deaf not hear? Eye, tongue and ear have no power of their own — it is by the mind on the Word that the Unseen is written and read.

The mother, with care, keeps and guards the womb, and from it the form grows whole and the son is born. Then, keeping her restraint, taking only wholesome food, from her the child drinks and is suckled, sound and well. Not weighing the mess of its filth, she cherishes it in her heart, tending the babe, though its body soils her. So the Sikh is an infant in the world; and by the grace of the merciful Guru, he is kept, like the babe.

As the mother keeps her restraint in food and drink, so the son stays sound and free of harm; as, in the way of statecraft, the sovereign is watchful, so the people dwell carefree and without fear; as the boatman is alert on the ship at sea, so the traveller reaches the far shore, past grief — so the Guru, the perfect Brahm, the knowledge, the meditation, the love: through it the Sikh, free of fault, is fit for his own true state.

When the mother chides and strikes her son, yet loves him, she can bear neither the love nor the rebuke to come from another. The mother's love and her chiding are both for his good; another's chiding or love is a ruin of his life. As one falling into water drowns, and into fire burns — so the grace or the wrath of another woman, done in ignorance. So the Guru, tending his Sikhs with care, lets no double-mindedness touch the love of the supreme treasure.

As the mother, seeing the snake in the child's hand, does not cry out, but coaxes and gathers it to her breast; as the physician does not spell out to the sick their trouble, but, by restraint and medicine, drives off the disease's penalty; as the teacher does not dwell on the pupil's slips, but, telling and telling, breaks the foolishness of the mind — so the True Guru, seeing faults, tells no one of them, but, in his perfect discernment, teaches with a mighty love.

As with sweets and drinks the mother feeds and cheers the child, then weans it from the habit of the breast; as the physician gives medicine mixed with rock-sugar, and the sick, eating it as a sweet, lessens the disease; as the farmer, watering and watering the grain, tends it, and, ripe, cuts it and brings it home — so the Guru fulfils the longing, then makes it desireless, and brings the Sikh home to the Name, his own true state.

Guarding the son's knowledge, meditation and very life, the mother holds his fault or virtue nowhere in her heart. As a wife, though bearing the husband's weight, takes him to her breast, and so wins the love and honour of her darling child; as the pupil, timid, shrinks in shame before the teacher, yet, for all his slips, does not let go his love of the teacher — so the Sikh, mind, word and deed at the refuge of the Guru's feet: the True Guru does not give him over to the messenger of death.

A million million hosts of lust, seekers of lust; a million million filled with anger, the wrathful. A million million greedy ones, doing their greed; a million million sunk in attachment, diving deep. A million million of pride, the proud, craving form, foe, riches, joy, strength and trickery. They cannot press down even a single pore of the True Guru's Sikhs, in whom the Guru's knowledge and meditation are weapon and armour.

As Mount Sumeru, high, unshaken, unreachable, cannot be touched by fire, wind or water; as the fire's light, its speech fourfold, mounts up, and the wind's blast, the dust far off, makes it flash; as the confluence of waters washes the filth and makes clean, taking away pain, seen, heard, told in a well-ordered way — so the Guru's Sikh, the yogi, his mind past the three qualities, drinks the nectar-taste of the beloved Guru's Word.

As at the hour of Sukhdev's birth, whoever was born at that time, know them all as adepts; as whatever swati-drop falls into the sea, meeting the oyster, is called a pearl; as the sandal-scented wind, moving on, makes every tree it touches one with the sandal — so in the company of the Guru's Sikh, whoever wakes, by the nectar-yoga, the grace of the Word, is fit for the state of freedom.

At the time of pilgrimage they do not come one by one, but all together — behind some saint, the sins of all are undone. As a king's army is not all the same, but behind each one a million more press in and are fed; as in the clear water of the sea the ship rides, and one by one it carries countless to the shore — so the Guru's Sikh, his branches many at the world's door: facing him, taking his shelter, a million cross over.

As one keeps a lamp hidden, covered, in a vessel — though it is there in the house, no other knows it; then the keeper reveals it, makes it shine, and it takes away the thick darkness with its rising light; all that is in the house is seen, plain to the eye, and, the moment it shines, the lamp is known — so, hidden in the hard-to-reach vessel of the heart, the form of Light, by the Guru's teaching, is measured and known beyond the mind.

As the ailing creature loves the medicine, and, the strength of the trouble turned away, comes to rest in ease; as, casting off the least stain from another metal, and wiping out its many colours, the gold breaks into light; as a million loads of wood, heaped together, at the least touch of flame turn to a cool ash — so the Guru's teaching, entering deep within the heart, undoes the pain and fault of birth and death.

As the arrowhead, broken and lodged in the body, is drawn out at once when the magnet is shown to it; as the leech is set on the sick body and draws the bad blood, and the useless labour of the trouble falls away; as the midwife kneads the pregnant woman, and the womb is steadied and no pain grips her — so the five thieves, the ghosts, the delusions, break and flee when the True Guru's mantra is savoured on the tongue.

As in the fruitful wood are trees of many kinds, and to the one whose fruit is sweet the birds fly; as in the mountain many stones are seen, yet the digger, seeking the diamond within, is drawn on in longing; as in the sea dwell creatures without number, yet the swan seeks and eats the priceless pearl there — so at the refuge of the Guru's feet are countless Sikhs, and to the one who holds the Guru's knowledge the people cling.

As the moon's light breaks into full brightness, and, gazing, the enchanted partridge holds it in meditation; as in the darkness the lamp alone shines, and, seeing it, countless moths hum, warp and weft; as, knowing sweets and drinks are kept in a vessel for a task, a million ants are drawn in boundless longing — so the supreme treasure, the Guru's knowledge, accepted, at whose feet the whole world bows in homage.

As many as the flowers that bloom, not so many bear fruit; as many as the buds a tree sets, not all ripen. As many as the sons born, not all live on; as many as live, not all are the lotus of their line. As many as charge into the ranks, not all are champions; not all the champions fall fighting on the field. By the way of the mirror, all are called Guru's Sikhs; but rare are they who catch the fire and stand unshaken.
