The glory of the darshan — the eye, the sight, reaching up to knowledge, sight and meditation — yet the Lord's darshan is past all sight. The Word passes into awareness, and awareness into the Word — His dwelling the Unseen, His fragrance past the way of the nose. The taste past the tongue, the tongue past the taste, the touch that touches without any touch of the hand. The feet reaching to His going, the going to His feet — hope and thirst, a wondrous faith, the love of the Beloved.

The Gurmukh, his mind on the Word, slaying ego, dies — freed while still living, known in the Life of the world. Within, unbroken, the inner veils fall away; the Inner Knower is measured by the inward state. Maya is full of Brahm, and Brahm full of Maya — know the discernment of Brahm, the single support, as one. Body and universe, universe and body, warp and weft, Light merging in Light — this is the knowledge of Brahm.

At the refuge of the Guru's feet, the running mind held still, the heart unshaken, a home of peace and natural ease. The hope of life and the dread of death are wiped away — freed while still living, the dawning of the Guru's wisdom. Losing the self, whatever is to be, he holds as best; his service to the Soul of all — the slave of the slaves. The beloved Guru's darshan and Word, the knowledge and meditation of Brahm — whole, all-pervading, the sure knowledge of Brahm.

The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss made desire desireless; the Gurmukh's effort is effort made effortless. On the Gurmukh's path, double-mindedness and doubt are lost; grasping the refuge of the feet, the wisdom is unshaken. Touching the darshan, hope and wishing fall still; his mind on the Word, the knowledge, the breath, the Lord of breath. The play of creation, a wondrous, marvellous painting — and in the painting the painter has His dwelling, true, ever true.

Hearing the beloved Guru's Word, the ear's doors flew open; sound meeting sound, love fixed on the unstruck strain. Singing the Word, the taste on the tongue an elixir, the endless boundless stream distilled in the furnace. In the heart the Guru's Word takes its home, the treasure of knowledge; the running mind held still, the awareness beyond the mind won. Absorbed in the Word, the highest good entering, the body made divine, the divine Light shown forth plain.

The power of meeting in the Guru's Sikh company is great — in deep love, one with another, the full unfolding. The matchless darshan, form and colour, beauty in every limb — beholding it, the eyes are lost, a wondrous faith. The treasure of the Word, the unstruck ringing sound — hearing it, awareness and wit are borne away, the practice. Their gaze fixed on the darshan and their mind on the Word — a marvel-beyond-marvels state, the full delight.

The power of meeting in the Gurmukh company is great — the full unfolding, the vow of love, one with another. The dust of the lotus-feet, its fragrant taste, its coolness and tenderness — a million worships cannot equal it. A form past all form, an utter wonder — no melody, no mode, no sound in all its wonder is its match. The endless boundless stream, the treasure-nectar drunk — a marvel-beyond-marvels state; nothing else is its equal.

As water flowing downward is cool and clean, while fire, its face turned upward, is hot and unclean; as water, meeting colour on colour, becomes that colour, while fire scorches every colour's beauty away; as water's reflection nurtures the flowering plants, while fire burns them to a joyless ash — so are the meetings of the unholy and the holy: the Guru's wisdom, joy; base-mindedness, joyless grief.

Lust, anger, greed, attachment and pride mark the unholy; truth, dharma, mercy and contentment the holy. By the Guru's wisdom, the holy company, loving devotion; by base-mindedness, ill company, pain and fault. Birth and death, without the refuge of the Guru's feet; the state of freedom, the lotus-feet cleansing the heart. A share of knowledge, the swan's way, in the Gurmukh line — good deed and bad, like the swan sifting milk from water.

Accepting defeat, the quarrel ends; anger, when slain, becomes an elixir; laying down the burden, no penalty falls — so the world knows. Ego and pride are high places where the water does not reach; where the ground bows low, there the water is found. When every limb is bowed low at the feet, then the foot-nectar and the dust of the feet are prized. So the devotee of Hari, grown humble in the world, is honoured — the world falls at his feet, its brow to the ground.

The head, though called the highest in the body, is not worshipped; the eye, for all its seeing, is not worshipped. The ear, bound to hearing, is not worshipped; the nose, drawing fragrance and breath, is not worshipped. The mouth, with its taste and joined to the Word, is not worshipped; the hand, in the whole rank of the limbs, is not worshipped. Emptied of sight, of the Word held in the mind, of scent and taste — it is the feet, bowed low, of the great one that are worshipped.

Flowing downward, the water is clean and cool; bowing to the earth, it is the store of every taste. By its upward striving the sandal spreads its scent through the wood; the water, sinking to the sea, becomes the shining of jewels. Flowing downward, the feet are worshipped in the world — one longs for their foot-nectar, the dust of those feet. So the devotee of Hari, grown humble in the world — desire made desireless, the home, a wondrous faith.

The mind on the Word, absorbed, a fish in water, the inner confluence reached, the breath reversed. In a wondrous faith, fearless practice, the taste of love, drinking the honey-wine of love in a secret going. By the unstruck of the Word, the awareness beyond the mind, by the stream of love flowing in natural ease. Crossing the three-fold knot, the ocean of peace, its union and joy — the tenth place, the flawless, absolute home.

As water and the lotus, water and the milk of the fish, as the chakwi and the lotus love the sun in turn; the lamp and the moth, the bee and the lotus, the partridge and the moon, the deer and the sound, the rain-bird and the cloud, are true; wife and husband, son and mother, the thirsty and water, the hungry and food, the poor and wealth, the friend — the attachment and malice of Maya are a giver of pain, no helper; but where Guru and Sikh meet, they are past the three qualities.

Drawn to the nectar-taste of the lotus-feet, limb by limb the wonder fills every part. His gaze fixed on the darshan, as the moth to the lamp; his mind on the Word, as the deer to the sound, borne away. Desire made desireless, anger made angerless, greed made greedless, attachment made attachmentless — even ego stands ashamed. A marvel of marvels, an astonishment past astonishment — a wondrous, marvel-beyond-marvels dwelling.

The Light of the darshan dawns in the ocean of peace — a million praises break from the beauty of one sesame-seed. A slight grace is a million wish-goddesses and wish-trees; the sweet word, a million honeyed delights. The gentle smile, the manner, a mine of a million; the moon's glory, a million water-lilies tumbling before it. The bee-mind, drawn to the honey-nectar taste, in natural trance, a wondrous faith.

The dust of the refuge of the feet bathes the stained mind clean; by the Guru's wisdom the mirror-mind grows unshaken. Giving the salve of the Guru's knowledge to the fickle, wagtail eye, the meditation of the casteless Immaculate fills water and land. Breaking fear and doubt, crushing the foe of deeds and death, grinding the five-fold spread and its treachery to nothing. Doing service, all made the Immaculate's — amid Maya detached, sin made spotless.

While the moon is whole, Rahu cannot seize the sun; unseen, the eclipse comes upon the sun. In the west the moon rises to homage; by an old bond, the comet strikes the moon's field. In the wood the fire lies hidden long ages, yet the moment the wood falls into fire, it burns. So Shiva and Shakti, the meetings of the unholy and the holy — base-mindedness and the Guru's wisdom, the unbearable is borne.

The saint's goodwill is a line carved in stone; his love and enmity are but lines on water, marked apart in the holy company. The wicked one's love is a line on water, and his enmity a line in stone, through every limb. As fire in wood, so love and its opposite; the Ganga's water and the water of wine both flow in the Ganges. Base-mindedness and the Guru's wisdom, the goat and the snake — the doer of good and the doer of harm, in the right way and the wrong.

Base-mindedness and the Guru's wisdom, the company of the unholy and the holy — like fire in wood, their nature does not leave them. The goat and the snake, the Ganga's water and wine, the hemp and the madder, the fool and the scholar, are at odds. Thorn and flower, stone and pot, armour and weapon, swan and crow, crane and hunter and deer — so they end. Iron-slag and gold, oyster-pearl and conch, honey and deadly poison — givers of joy or pain, they move through the world.

The frog and the lotus, the bamboo and the sandal, the swan and the crane, the touchstone and the stone, poison and nectar are joined. The deer and its musk, the snake and its jewel, the honey and the bee bear witness — the barren wife's union with her lord is a fruitless embrace. The owl in the sun's light, the caper-bush in the rain, are like food and clothing to one wasting with disease. So the seed of the Guru's wisdom does not sprout in the salt-soil — no shoot rises, no meeting comes.

The moth counts union and the vow of love its all; the fish counts the grief of separation as good. With a single gaze on the lamp, the moth lays down its life; the fish, parted from the water, will not call it living. But the bee-mind, meeting the lotus-feet, parts again — cursed the ignorant birth of deceitful love. Fruitless the life and death of one who turns from the Guru, holding in the heart neither love nor longing.

His gaze fixed on the darshan, he sees and is seen — know all sight as the one single sight. His mind on the Word, he speaks and is heard — hold all the Word as the one single Word. The Cause of causes, the doer of all, the all-knowing — recognise the Maker in every deed and doing. The True Guru's knowledge and meditation, the One and the many made one — bring the discernment of Brahm, the single support, into the heart.

At a slight glance Maya bewitches realm and universe, yet in the colour of the holy company one is spellbound, absorbed. He whose Ik Onkar takes forms of many kinds — in the hour of kirtan the love is fixed on the holy company. Shiva, the sons of Sanak, Brahma are His obedient ones — before Him, the holy company sings virtues without number. Unreachable, boundless, the saint's glory is boundless too — deep-absorbed, a fish in water, undivided.

My own true home is the holy company; the sage Narad's darshan, the holy company, is my own true form. The holy company is my mother, father, kin and friend; the holy company my son, noble and matchless. The holy company is every treasure, the breath of my life; the holy company my own true state, my service, lamp and incense. The holy company is colour, taste, pleasure, natural joy; the holy company is glory, the highest praise and beauty.

The unreachable, boundless Lord, the Unseen, the mysterious, is not won by countless forced austerities and restraints. Not won by worldly pleasure, not by royal yoga, not grasped by the sound and dispute of the Vedas. Not won by pilgrimage and holy days, not by serving god upon god, not by fixing the love on rites, dharma, vows and observances. Fruitless are all the endless kinds of practice — but, alert, in the holy company, sing the Word.

The play of a dream — only he who sees it knows it; a second one does not see it, so how could it be told? A word spoken through a reed is heard when the ear is laid to it; without a speaker and a hearer, how could it be reckoned? As water is drunk from the root of the water-lift, drawn up with effort, so, drunk, the mind is content. Where Guru and Sikh meet, the secret tale of delight — knowledge, meditation, the taste of love, a wondrous ordering.

Flowing downward, the water is cool and clean, while fire, its face turned upward, is hot and unclean. Laden with fruit, the mango bows and stays bent long; the castor-plant does not bow, and its life is short. As the sandal makes the plants around it fragrant, the bamboo, for all its height, is drowned, lost in its own company. So the unholy and the holy — pride, and humility: like the hemp and the madder, they make their sin or their merit.

Among all the plants, two tall trees grew fruitless, drowned in their own great height. The silk-cotton, near the sandal, took a fragrance; the bamboo, scentless, stayed knotted in its stubbornness. The silk-cotton's fruit is cotton-down, shade for bird and deer; the bamboo, envious of colour, burns in its own malice. So the unholy become holy in the holy company — but he does not tremble who hides the Guru and betrays his Guru-brother.

Tree and vine, meeting, bear fruit and thick shade; but the bamboo, envious of colour, meeting, burns and is burned. Laden with fruit, every tree bows low to the ground; the bamboo, drowned in its height, thinks only of itself. All the plants keep the pure heart's vow of silence; the bamboo, hollow and knotted, sounds and strikes when played. Though close beside the sandal, it stays scentless — the foe of the Guru's Sikh, hard as adamant, is not saved.

The power of meeting in the Guru's Sikh company is such — in love, one with another, they cling to each other's feet. Their gaze fixed on the darshan and their mind on the Word, they fix their love on the knowledge and meditation of the perfect Brahm. Setting out a single sweet dish, the great sacrament, they call the Sikhs together for one Guru-anniversary. Even Shiva and the sons of Sanak long for their leavings — what fruit could the slanderer of the saints ever gain?

As a boat, heavy-laden, brought to shore by a finger's help, crosses over, and all its passengers pass safely; as one who eats but once, sitting a while in the kitchen, is filled full with dishes and their tastes; as a servant, going to the king's door and making his bow, thereafter enjoys and eats of a whole province — so, of the sixty ghadis in the eight watches of the day, if one spends but a single ghadi in the saints' assembly, he goes to his own true home.

As on the Kartik nights the rows of festival lamps flare into light, then, the light risen, are gone; as in the rainy season the bubble forms, and its name does not hold for the blink of an eye; as in the heat the deer's mirage plays, a shimmer seen, born and vanishing in a breath — so is the attachment of Maya, the fickle, false shade of a tree; deceiving the deceiver, cling to the beloved Guru's feet.

As a garment, worn on the body, grows soiled, and, meeting water and soap, is made clean again; as a pool, though covered over with green scum, when stirred and drunk is clean and untouched; as in the dark of night the stars glitter, and light comes with the rising of the sun — so Maya's attachment and doubt make the wisdom soiled; the True Guru's knowledge and meditation are the shimmering Light.

Present within, yet it wanders to distant lands; running behind, the footman cannot reach it. The chariot cannot reach it, nor the lordly elephant, nor the horse; the bird and deer, though loosed to fly, cannot reach it. The wind's going cannot reach it through the three worlds; below, above, in mid-air, it is not found. But the base, unholy mind, gripped by the five thieves, the ghosts — the Guru's knowledge, the holy company, brings it into keeping.

For the blind, the Word held in the mind, hand and foot are the support; for the deaf, the feet and hands, the sight, the Word. For the mute, the support is hand and foot, the sight, the mind on the Word; for the lame, the support is sight, the Word, the hearing. For the crippled, the support is sight, the Word held in the mind, hand and foot — each broken in a limb, meek in its want. Blind, mute, deaf, lame, maimed, heaps of pain — for my inner self, the Inner Knower is ever the skilled support.

For the blind, mute and deaf, hand and foot the ready prop; for the blind, mute, deaf and lame, the one hand is the support. Blind, mute, deaf, lame, maimed, heaps of pain — my whole being broken, meek, in grief, without support. The Inner Knower knows the inward state — how could He but see me through and set it right, the God-man?

The chakwi, the partridge, the deer, the fish, the bee and the moth — their love is one-sided, of many hues, a giver of pain. From that one single love they will not turn, but all die by it; this is the way that has come down from first to last in the world. But the power of meeting in the Guru's Sikh company is such — a helper, a giver of joy in this world and the next. Yet the one whose base-mindedness is not wiped away by hearing the Guru's wisdom is like the snake by the sandal, its poison unremoved.

The fish has no awareness, the water no knowledge of the Word; the double-mindedness of water and fish cannot be undone. Pool and river, fathomless, a mighty current, dwelling there, it swallows iron — yet it cannot save the witless. Without water, thrashing, the fish gives up its dear life, but the water knows not the pain, the meekness, of the meek. A love that gives pain, the fish's trust in love — cursed be such love, next to the steadfast love of the Guru's Sikh line.

The moth comes to the lamp by the way of love, and, drawn to the lamp, most contrary, meeting it, is burned. The bee flies to the lotus in affection, and the lotus, folding its cup, takes away its life. Mind, word and deed, the fish absorbed in the water — parted, it cannot be kept, but is caught and cast away. Dying, they will not turn from their trust in a love that gives pain — so how could one ever forget the joy-giving love of the Guru's Sikh?

The lamp and the moth are empty of the divine eye and darshan; the beloved Guru's darshan and meditation reach through the three worlds. The fragrant lotus cannot keep the wandering bee; the refuge of the Guru's feet lets one roam nowhere else. The fish and the water — their love and vow are no help at the end; the Guru's Sikh is the sea, present here and there alike. From that one single love they will not turn, but all die by it; the beloved Guru, all-embracing, the companion, the nectar of greatness.

The lamp and the moth, meeting, cannot save from burning; burned and dead, they gain no supreme state beyond. The bee and the lotus, meeting, cannot keep from wandering; dead in the folded cup, they do not merge in natural ease. Meeting the water, the fish's double-mindedness is not undone; parted, dying, it is not sent to the realm of Hari. But the union here and there is a helper, a giver of joy — the Guru's knowledge and meditation make one drink the nectar of love.

The lamp and the moth, the bee and the lotus, the water and the fish, the chakwi and the sun, the deer and the sound — their love is one-sided, of many hues, no companion; all are givers of pain, no helper at the end or the first. Living, they have no holy company; dead, no supreme state — knowledge, meditation, the taste of love, are by the Beloved's grace. Winning the human birth, the beloved Guru, the store of mercy, the refuge of His feet, the fruit of bliss, a wonder.

On the Gurmukh's path, the meditation on the Guru, he stays alert, and finds his own true home and a dwelling in natural ease. The discerning Word, the one support, the wisdom unshaken, sweet words, the dawning of the Guru's knowledge. The lotus-feet, the treasure of foot-nectar drunk, held by the taste of love, a wondrous faith. Knowledge, meditation, the vow of love, a perfect trust in the heart — forest and home alike, amid Maya detached.

Fearing death, yet the thief does not leave off thieving; the highwayman waits, robbing, with his fellow-robbers. The harlot's lover, ruined, keeps no fear in his mind; the gambler, though he lose his all, does not tire of the game. The addict will not leave his addiction, though reproached — bearing fault and pain, hearing people and Vedas, he stays engrossed. If the base and unholy will not forsake the company they have embraced, how could the Guru's Sikh ever forsake the holy company?
