1 · In Salutation to the Guru
namasakār guradev ko sat nām jis mantr suṇāiā | bhavajal vichon kaḍh kai mukat padārath māh samāiā | janam maraṇ bhau kaṭiā sansā rog viyog miṭāiā | sansā ihu sansār hai janam maran vich dukh savāiā | jam daṇḍ siraun na utarai sākat durajan janam gavāiā | charan gahe guradev de sat sabad de mukat karāiā | bhāu bhagat gurapurab kar nām dān isanān driṛhāiā | jehā bīu tehā phal pāiā |1|
I bow to the Guru, who spoke the sacred words of the True Name into my ear. Lifting me out of the terrifying ocean, he melted me into the treasure of freedom. He cut away the fear of birth and death, and healed the sickness of doubt and separation. This world is one long worry, and coming and going brings pain heaped on pain; the rod of death never lifts from the head of the faithless and the cruel, who throw their lives away. But those who took hold of the Guru's feet — he gave them the True Word and set them free. Through loving devotion, through keeping the Guru's holy days, and through holding firm to the Name, to giving, and to clean living: as the seed is, so is the fruit you gather.
2 · The World Takes Form
prithamai sās na mās san andh dhundh kachh khabar na pāī | rakat bind kī deh rach pañch tat kī jaṛit jaṛāī | pauṇ pāṇī baisantaro chauthī dharatī saṅg milāī | pañcham vich ākās kar karatā chhaṭam adisaṭ samāī | pañch tat pañchīs gun satr mitr mil deh baṇāī | khāṇī bāṇī chalit kar āvā gauṇ charit dikhāī | chaurāsīh lakh jon upāī |2|
In the beginning there was no breath and no flesh — only a deep, dark haze, and nothing could be known. Then out of blood and seed a body was shaped, set like a jewel with the five elements. Air, water and fire were joined, and earth was made the fourth; into the fifth, the sky, the Creator poured himself unseen as the sixth. From the five elements and their twenty-five qualities, mixing friend with foe, the body was built. Making the play of the wombs and of speech, he showed the wonder of coming and going, and brought forth eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life.
3 · The Gift of Human Birth
chaurāsīh lakh jon vich utam janam su māṇas dehī | akhī vekhaṇ karan suṇ mukh subh bolaṇ bachan sanehī | hathī kār kamāvaṇī pairī chal satisaṅg milehī | kirat virat kar dharam dī khaṭ khavālaṇ kār karehī | guramukh janam sakārathā gurabāṇī paṛh samajh suṇehī | gurabhāī santusaṭ kar charaṇāmrit lai mukh pivehī | pairī pavaṇ na chhoḍīai kalī kāl raharās karehī | āp tare gurasikh tarehī |3|
Of all those eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life, the human body is the highest. Eyes to see, ears to hear, a mouth to speak sweet and loving words; hands to do honest work, feet to walk to the company of the holy. Earning an honest living and sharing it is the way of right living. Blessed is the birth of the one who turns toward the Guru, who reads, understands and listens to Gurbani, who gladdens those who walk beside him, and drinks in humility the water that washed the Guru's feet. Never let that humility go — in this dark age, make it your daily practice. Such a Sikh of the Guru crosses over, and carries others across as well.
4 · Why Creation Was Made
oaṅkār ākār kar ek kavāu pasāu pasārā | pañj tat paravāṇ kar ghaṭ ghaṭ andar tribhavaṇ sārā | kādar kine na lakhiā kudarat sāj kīā avatārā | ik dū kudarat lakh kar lakh biant asaṅkh apārā | rom rom vich rakhion kar brahamaṇḍ karoṛ sumārā | ikas ikas brahamaṇḍ vich das das kar avatār utārā | kete bed biās kar kaī kateb muhammad yārā | kudarat ik etā pāsārā |4|
The One made form out of the formless: with a single Word, the whole expanse spread out. Shaping the five elements, he placed the three worlds inside every single heart. No one has grasped the Maker; by his own power he shaped this play of creation. From one he made a hundred thousand wonders, and out of those, more than counting and past all measure. In every pore of his skin he holds millions of universes, and into each single universe he comes down again and again, in form after form. Sages like Vyasa, more than can be counted, put the Vedas together, and many wrote the scriptures of Muhammad's faith — such is the vast reach of the one Creator's power.
5 · The Ages Begin

He set up the four ages — first the age of truth, then the second and the third. The fourth he named the dark age, and to each of the four peoples he gave a turn to rule. Priests, warriors, traders and workers — in each age one of the four held the highest place. In the first age the swan was the ideal, the bird that sips the milk and leaves the water: 'I am That, the One,' with no second raised beside him. Only the One was spoken of, free of the tangle of clinging and illusion. People did long penance in the forest, living their days on roots and leaves; they lived a hundred thousand years, and built no great houses or forts. One thing passes away, and another stands firm and shines on.
6 · The Turning of the Ages
trete chhatrī rūp dhar sūraj bansī vaḍ avatārā | nau hise gaī ārajā māiā mohu ahaṅkār pasārā | duāpur jādav vans kar jug jug audh ghaṭai āchārā | rig bed mah braham krit pūrab mukh subh karam bichārā | khatrī thāpe jujar ved dakhaṇ mukh bahu dān dātārā | vaison thāpiā siām ved pachham mukh kar sīs nivārā | rig nīlambar jujar pīt svetambar kar siām sudhārā | trihu jugī trai dharam uchārā |6|
In the second age the warrior form arose, the great kings of the sun line. But by now life had shrunk to nine parts of its span, and clinging, illusion and pride spread wide. In the third age came the Yadav line, and age by age both lifespan and conduct fell away. The Rig Veda held the pure deeds of the east; the warriors were founded on the Yajur Veda, with much giving of gifts in the south. The Sam Veda was set for the trading folk of the west, who bowed their heads low. So across three ages three ways of right living were declared, each dressed in its own colour.
7 · The Dark Age Arrives
kalijug chauthā thāpiā sūdr birat jag mah varatāī | karam su rig jujar siām ke kare jagat rid bahu sukachāī | māiā mohī medanī kal kalivālī sabh bharamāī | uṭhī gilān jagatr vich haumai andar jalai lukāī | koi nā kisai pūjadā ūch nīch sabh gat bisarāī | bhae biadalī pātasāh kal kātī umarāi kasāī | rahiā tapāvas trihu jugī chauthe jug jo dei su pāī | karam bhrisaṭ sabh bhaī lokāī |7|
The fourth age, the dark age, was set in place, and the way of service spread through the world. People's deeds mixed together the paths of the three earlier ages, and hearts grew full of hesitation. The earth was lost in illusion, and the whole world of the dark age wandered astray. Disgust and quarrelling rose up everywhere, and people burned in a pride they kept hidden. No one honoured anyone; high and low alike forgot the way of grace. Kings became unjust, the age itself a knife, and the nobles butchers. Justice had stood through three ages; in the fourth, what a person gives is what they get. And so the whole world's doing was spoiled.
8 · The Six Schools
chahun bedān ke dharam math khaṭ sāsatr kath rikh suṇāvai | brahamādik sanakādikā jiu tih kahā tivai jag gāvai | gāvan paṛan bichār bahu koṭ madhe viralā gat pāvai | ih acharaj man āvadī paṛat guṇat kachh bhed na pāvai | jug jug iko varan hai kalijug kiu bahute dikhalāvai | jandre vaje trihu jugī kath paṛh rahai bharam nah jāvai | jiu kar kathiā chār bed khaṭ sāsatr saṅg sākh suṇāvai | āpo āpaṇe mat sabh gāvai |8|
Churning the right living of the four Vedas, the sages spoke out the six schools of philosophy. As Brahma and the sages of old had said it, so the world sang it. Many recite and think deeply, and yet out of millions hardly one is set free. This wonder rises in the mind: for all their reading and reckoning, they find no real secret. Through every age there was truly one path — so why in the dark age are so many shown? For three ages the locks stayed shut, and for all the reciting and reading, doubt would not go. As the four Vedas were spoken, so the six schools give their witness — and each one sings only its own teaching.
9 · Nyaya — The School of Logic
gotam tape bichār kai rig ved kī kathā suṇāī | niāi sāsatr kau math kar sabh bidh karate hath jaṇāī | sabh kachh karate vas hai hor bāt vich chale na kāī | duhī sirī karatār hai āp niārā kar dikhalāī | karatā kinai na dekhiā kudarat andar bharam bhulāī | sohan braham chhapāi kai paṛadā bharam karatār suṇāī | rig kahai suṇ guramukhahu āpe āp na dūjī rāī | satigur binā na sojhī pāī |9|
Gautam the ascetic thought it through and told the teaching of the Rig Veda. Churning the school of Nyaya, he showed that every working of the world lies in the Maker's hand. Everything is under the Creator's will, and nothing moves outside of it. At both ends the Creator alone stands, and yet he keeps himself completely apart. No one has ever seen the Maker, and inside his creation people wander lost in doubt. 'I am That' — he covered the truth over, and let the very curtain of doubt announce the Creator. The Rig Veda says: listen, Gurmukhs — he alone is himself, and not a hair's breadth of him is second. But without the True Guru this understanding never dawns.
10 · Mimamsa — The School of Ritual
phir jaiman rikh boliā jujar ved math kathā suṇāvai | karamā ute nibaṛai dehī madh kare so pāvai | thāpas karam sansār vich karam vās kar āvai jāvai | sahasā manahu na chukaī karamān andar bharam bhulāvai | karam varataṇ jagat kī iko māiā braham kahāvai | jujar ved ko mathan kar tat braham vich bharam milāvai | karam driṛāi jagat vich karam bandh kar āvai jāvai | satigur binā na sahasā jāvai |10|
Then the sage Jaimini spoke, churning the Yajur Veda to tell its teaching. Everything is settled by deeds: what the body does, that it harvests. He founded action in the world — tied to their deeds, people come and go. Doubt never leaves the mind; caught in their own deeds, they wander confused. He made action the whole business of the world, and called illusion and God one and the same. Churning the Yajur Veda, he mixed doubt into the pure truth of God. Fixing deeds firmly in the world — tied to deeds, one comes and goes. Without the True Guru, this hesitation never ends.
11 · Vedanta

Refining the Sam Veda, Vyasa churned it and spoke the Vedanta. Past all mere talk, he made known his own inner truth of God. Yet he brought no one else into his seeing; lost in pride, he wandered in doubt. Making the world worship the self, he never found the secret of loving devotion. Churning the Veda brought him no contentment; it only burned in the fire of its own heat. The debt of illusion was not cleared, and the rod of death made it weep in great pain. Then the sage Narad taught him, churning the Bhagavat into songs of praise. For without taking shelter, no one is carried across.
12 · Sankhya

As the third age passed, the crown was set on the head of the dark age. The Atharva Veda was established, facing north, where the Gurmukh sings his praises. The great sage Kapila churned Sankhya and spoke the hymns of the Atharva Veda. Drinking the great nectar of knowledge, he told apart what lasts forever from what passes away. Without this knowing it is not found, though you run after it with a million efforts. Whatever the body does by mere ritual is passing — it does not stay even a moment. But when the mind ripens in wisdom, peace wells up, and the fear of birth and death is driven off. The Gurmukh who knows melts into calm ease.
13 · Vaisheshika

Churning the Atharva Veda, the Gurmukh sings the qualities of the Vaisheshika school. As you plant, so you harvest; without the right season the fruit does not come to hand. All are under the Command, and whoever accepts that Command melts into calm ease. Nothing happens by our own doing, so do not set down good or bad in the mind as your own. As one acts, so one receives — this is what the sage Kanad declared. Hear how the ages differed: in the first, one person's wrong made the whole world suffer; in the second, a city was ground down; in the third, a whole clan was destroyed for one bad deed. But in the dark age, whoever does a wrong bears its fruit alone.
14 · Yoga — The Path of Patanjali
sekhanāg pātañjal mathiā guramukh sāsatr nāg suṇāī | ved atharavaṇ boliā jog binā nah bharam chukāī | jiu kar mailī ārasī sikal binā nah mukh dikhāī | jog padārath niramalā anahad dhun andar liv lāī | asaṭ dasā sidh nau nidhī guramukh jogī charan lagāī | trihu jugān kī bāsanā kalijug vich pātañjal pāī | hatho hathī pāīai bhagat jog kī pūr kamāī | nām dān isanān subhāī |14|
Churning the lore of Shesh, the great serpent, Patanjali spoke the Gurmukh's science of yoga. The Atharva Veda declared: without yoga, doubt is not cleared. Just as a dirty mirror shows no face until it is polished, so the treasure of yoga is spotless — the mind fixed on the melody that sounds inside with no one playing it. The eighteen miracle powers and the nine treasures fall at the feet of the Gurmukh yogi. The longing of three ages Patanjali brought into the dark age. It is handed on from one person to the next — the whole practice of devotion within yoga: the Name, giving, and clean living, held in loving ease.

Age after age the body's mountain of wanting drives the soul to come and go. Turned round and round again, only the one who grows wise grasps the secret. In the first age it wandered seeing two where there is One; in the second it fell back into the wombs. In the third it was tied by its deeds, and in the fourth it takes a body again. In the second age, through 'mine' and 'I', a person is eaten up by pride. Doing the deeds of three ages, the worry of birth and death is never driven off. Then in the dark age, taking a body, one is trapped once more in the coils of action. The moment once lost never comes back to hand.
16 · What Counts in the Dark Age

Listen to the discipline of the dark age: bare ritual and works carry no weight here. Without singing the Beloved's praise, without loving devotion, no resting-place is found. In this age you gather the harvest of what was sown in the ages before. Having been given a human body, whoever slips from here finds nowhere to stand. Hear the grace of the dark age, as the Atharva Veda sang it: loving devotion is what is accepted — and the keeping of the Guru's days is itself the offering and the sacred fire of this age. When a person learns to call himself lowly, then God takes him into his account. In the dark age, the greatness lies in the Name.
17 · When the Age Turns Upside Down

When the age turns in on itself, what a strange, upside-down world it becomes. Disgust rises everywhere, and sin and rot fill the world. Caste and no-caste cannot bear each other, rubbing together like bamboo that bursts into flame. The Veda is slandered and no one understands — such is the darkness of not knowing. Yet the Veda and the scriptures are the Guru's own shop; hold to it, and you are carried across the ocean of fear. Without the True Guru there is no understanding, as long as God has not taken form among us. The Guru and God are One — the true Banker, and the world his traders. When the sun rises, the darkness is wiped away.
18 · The Scattering of Worship

In the dark age confusion itself seems to be the guide, and no one can tell wisdom from foolishness. No one holds anyone back; each does whatever comes into his head. One is made to worship a bare stone, another a grave or a tomb. With books of magic, magic words and pretence, people swell quarrel, anger and endless argument. Grabbing for themselves, they set up separate faiths, each one apart from the rest. One worships the moon or the sun, another begs from earth and sky; one tries to satisfy air, water and fire, or the judge of the dead. Empty in their piety, they wander lost in doubt.

Disgust filled the world, and four castes and four stages of life were made. Those who renounce the world were split into ten orders, and the yogis into twelve paths. Wandering jangam monks, Jain monks and naked holy men were set to argue with each other. The Brahmins in many ways pitted the law-books, the Vedas and the old holy stories against one another. The six schools quarrelled in enmity, and with them mixed thirty-six kinds of pretence. Tangled in books of magic, magic words and gold-making potions, they smeared themselves with the soot of so-called miracles. From one they made many forms, and showed shape after ugly shape. In the dark age, everyone wandered lost in doubt.

As many paths spread through the world, then came Muhammad, called the friend of God. With seventy-two peoples around him, enmity and opposition spread in many ways. Fasts, Eid and the set prayers bound the world in outward duty. Muslim masters and prophets, and holy men of every rank, dressed in many robes. In some places temples were pulled down and mosques raised in their place. The poor cow was killed, and sin spread across the earth. Unbeliever and heretic, Armenian and Roman, warring enemies — such was the age. And so the rule of cruelty spread across the world.

Four castes, four creeds — Hindu and Muslim filled the world. Selfishness, spite and pride drove people to push and shove by force. For Hindus the Ganga and Banaras; for Muslims Mecca and the Kaaba. Circumcision marked the Muslim; the forehead mark and the sacred thread marked the Hindu. They call on Ram and they call on Rahim — it is one Name, but they wandered onto two roads. Forgetting the Vedas and the scriptures, they were caught by the greed of a lying world. Truth was left standing on the bank, while Brahmin and Muslim preacher wore themselves out fighting. And still the coming and going of birth and death would not end.

The four ages had risen, and God himself became the judge of them all. He was the tablet himself, the pen himself, and the writer himself. Without the Guru all was darkness, and people struggled and died in a hundred ways. Sin filled the world, and the bull that carries the world's right living wept day and night. Without mercy it grew weak, sinking and slipping toward the pit of ruin. Standing on one leg, it grew heavy under the weight of the world's sin. No one but the holy could steady it — and no holy one could be seen anywhere in the world. Standing under the tilting earth, the bull cried out for help.

The Giver, the Lord, heard that cry and sent Guru Nanak into the world. He washed his feet, gave thanks, and gave the Sikhs that water to drink. In the dark age he showed the Highest One, the Perfect One, to be the single Reality. He gave right living its four feet again, and made the four castes into one. He made king and beggar equal, and taught the world to bow at one another's feet. This is the upside-down play of the Beloved: he bowed the head down onto the feet. Baba Nanak carried the dark age across, reciting and sounding the sacred words of the True Name. To carry the dark age over, Guru Nanak came.

First Baba Nanak received grace at the Door, and afterwards he earned it by hard work. He took sand and the bitter milkweed for food, and a bare stone for his seat. He gave himself to deep devotion, and by great good fortune his love was joined to God. Baba Nanak was dressed in the land of Truth, and in humility received the nine treasures of the Name. Fixing his gaze in meditation, he saw the whole earth on fire. Without the Guru all was gloom, and he heard the world crying out in pain. So Baba put on a traveller's clothes and set out on his long journeys, going to search the whole earth and set it right.
25 · Pilgrimage Without Love

Baba Nanak came to the pilgrimage places, and saw all the holy sites and their fairs. Much ritual was done there, but without loving devotion it counted for nothing. God had not written love into it; he read right through the four Vedas and the law-books, and looked. He searched the whole earth, through the first age, the second and the third. In the dark age all was thick darkness, and people were led astray by many kinds of outward show. God is not found through the clothes you wear — only by losing yourself before the One who has no form or feature. The Gurmukh rises above caste and past caste, walking in humility, marked out as the Guru's own Sikh. Only then does your effort count at the Door.

Men who keep celibate and women who keep chaste, the long-lived, the seekers, the masters of miracle powers, teachers and students; goddesses and gods, the great sages, Bhairav and the guardian spirits of the fields gathered in crowds; hosts of ghosts, heavenly singers and dancers, and every kind of spirit at their many plays; countless demons and giants, miserable because they saw two where there is One. All were drowned in pride — the gurus along with their many disciples. Not one Gurmukh could be seen, though he searched the pilgrim fairs and the shrines. He saw Hindus and Muslims alike, the holy masters and prophets and all their peoples — the blind shoving the blind into the well.

The True Guru Nanak appeared, the mist lifted, and light spread through the world. It was as when the sun comes up: the stars vanish and the darkness melts away. As the lion roars and the herds of deer scatter, unable to hold their ground, so wherever Baba set his foot, a place of worship was made and settled. Every seat of the yogi masters in the world thought: it is Nanak first, if anyone at all. In home after home rose the sound of kirtan, the singing of God's praise, like a festival of joy. Baba carried across the four directions and the nine regions of the earth — a true shelter. In the dark age the Gurmukh became plain to see.

Baba Nanak had seen the earth, looking out over its nine regions. Then he climbed Mount Sumeru, and the gathering of the yogi masters came into view. The eighty-four Siddhas, Gorakh and the rest, began working things out in their minds. The Siddhas asked, 'Listen, young one — what power brought you up here?' 'I meditated on the Highest Lord,' he said, 'and fixed my mind in loving devotion.' The Siddhas said, 'Listen, young one — tell us your name.' Baba answered, 'Honoured masters, Nanak found his state by chanting the Name. By calling myself lowly, I have come to the high home of the One.'

Again the Siddhas asked, 'Nanak, what is happening down in the world of mortals?' All of them had understood: Nanak had come to carry the dark age across. Baba said, 'Honoured masters, truth is the moon and falsehood is the darkness. The dark night of falsehood has spread, and I have set out to search the world. Sin has swallowed the earth, and the bull that carries right living stands below and cries. The masters have hidden themselves away in the mountains — who then will carry the world across? The yogis are empty of wisdom, smearing ash on their limbs night and day. Without the Guru the whole world is drowning.'

The dark age has come like a devouring hunger: what should never be eaten is eaten, O Lord. Kings do wrong — the fence itself eats the field it is meant to guard. The people, blind and without wisdom, speak only lies and deceit. The disciples play the instruments while the so-called masters dance in many ways. The disciples sit at home, and the master gets up and goes begging at their doors. The judges take bribes, and for a price they kill justice off. Man and woman love only for money, coming and going wherever the gain calls. And so sin has spread through the whole world.

The Siddhas thought to themselves, 'How might we test this young one?' A yogi like this, in the dark age, could light up our whole path. They handed him a begging-bowl: 'Honoured one, go and fill it with water.' Baba came to the pool and saw only jewels, rubies and gems shining there. The True Guru cannot be reached and cannot be measured — who could bear the flash of the Guru's light? He came back and said, 'Masters, there is no water in that pool.' By the Word alone he won the gathering of masters, and made his own path stand apart. In the dark age, Nanak, the Name is the giver of peace.

Then Baba went to Mecca, dressed in blue like a wanderer of God. A staff in his hand, a book under his arm, a water-pot, a prayer-mat and the call to prayer. He sat down in the mosque where the pilgrims had come for the Hajj. When Baba lay down to sleep that night, he stretched his feet toward the prayer-niche. A servant kicked him and said, 'Who is this unbeliever asleep here? Why do you lie with your feet toward God's house — what a sinful thing to do!' Baba answered, 'Then turn my feet where God is not.' They grabbed his legs and dragged them round — and Mecca itself seemed to turn, and they stood amazed and bowed.

They asked him about matters of faith — the Muslim judges and preachers gathered together. A great wonder had opened up, and no one could grasp its power. Turning the pages of the book, they asked, 'Who is greater, the Hindu or the Muslim?' Baba said, 'Pilgrims, without good deeds both come only to weeping. Hindu and Muslim alike find no shelter in the Court of God. The dye of the safflower is false — washed with water, it does not last. They slander one another, while Ram and Rahim are left standing in the wrong place. The world has gone down the road of deceit.'

He left the mark of his sandal there, and it was honoured in worship at Mecca. Wherever Baba went in the world, he never went without leaving a blessing. In home after home Baba was honoured, and the fighting of Hindu and Muslim melted away. What cannot be hidden was not hidden — the sun rose and lit the world. The lion roared in the wilderness, and all the herds of deer scattered. The risen moon cannot be covered: hold up a bowl to hide its light, and it still shines. From sunrise to sunset, the nine regions of the earth bowed low. Through the world the wonder of God was made plain.

Then Baba went to Baghdad and made his seat outside the city. One was Baba, the very form of the Timeless; the other was Mardana, who played the rebab, a stringed instrument. He gave the call to prayer, and the whole world grew still as deep silence. The city fell completely silent, and the Muslim master, seeing it, was amazed. He looked in meditation and saw a holy beggar, a great one lost in God. Then the saint Dastgir asked, 'Who is this holy man? Whose house is he from?' 'Nanak has come in the dark age' — God and holy man known as one and the same, filling earth and sky, known across all four directions.

The Muslim master questioned him with argument: 'This holy man is a very great master.' There, in Baghdad, he showed a great wonder. He spoke of the hundreds of thousands of lower worlds and skies, giving word of what lay past the reach of any searching. Then Dastgir said, 'Let us see too what you have found.' Baba took the master's son along, and in the blink of an eye they rose into the air. Hundreds of thousands of skies and lower worlds he showed him in a single flutter of the eye. He filled the begging-bowl with sacred food, drawing a dish of it up from the deep world below. Power that shows itself cannot be hidden away.

Bowing the fort of Baghdad, he bowed Mecca and Medina too. The gathering of eighty-four masters and the six schools of pretence he overcame. Hundreds of thousands of lower worlds and skies he won, and all the earth and world besides. He won the nine regions of the earth and raised the banner of the True Name. Gods and giants, demons and spirits, and even the recording angels he brought to his feet. In the court of Indra the heavenly dancers sang songs of joy in every melody. Joy filled the world: to carry the dark age across, Guru Nanak had come. Both Hindu and Muslim he made bow low.

Then Baba came to Kartarpur and put aside the traveller's clothes altogether. Putting on ordinary clothes, he took his seat and lived among the people. He made the Ganga flow backward, setting Guru Angad above his own sons. His own children did not keep his word — proud of heart, rebellious and ungrateful. Gurbani came from his mouth, and where light shone the darkness fled. Talk of the knowledge of God went on always, and the Word sounded with no one playing it. So Dar and Aarti were sung, and in the still hours before dawn the Jaap was recited. The Gurmukh carried across the burden of the age.

Hearing of the fair held on Shivratri, Shiva's night, Baba came to Achal Batala. The whole crowd turned out to see him. Wealth began to rain down — riches, powers and the nine treasures in plenty. Seeing this wonder, the yogis burned with envy in their hearts. A temple musician had come with his offering, and a yogi hid his water-pot away. The musician forgot his devotion, his mind lost over the missing pot. But Baba, who knows everything, drew it out from where it had been hidden. Seeing this play, the yogi grew sour with resentment.

Eaten up with resentment, the yogi lords all rose to hold a debate. The yogi Bhangarnath asked, 'Why have you put sour buttermilk into milk? Your curdled churning means the butter will never come to hand. Having taken off the traveller's clothes, why do you take up the life of a householder again?' Nanak replied, 'Bhangarnath, your own mother was unskilled. She did not wash the vessel clean, and by her carelessness spoiled the cream of the milk. Having given up the world and left the household, you go begging back at those same households — and without what others give, nothing comes to your hand.'

Hearing these words, the yogi lords set up a great, howling clamour. They drove at the rival of the six schools: 'In the dark age, Nanak of the Bedi family has come.' The Siddhas chanted all their spells, raising the sound of magic words. The yogis changed their shapes, showing themselves as lions and tigers in many tricks. Some grew wings and flew off like birds playing in the sky. One became a snake and hissed out wind; some rained down fire. Bhangarnath plucked at the stars; one rode a deerskin across the water. But the Siddhas' fire could not be put out by any putting-out.

The Siddhas said, 'Listen, Nanak — you have shown the world a wonder. Show us something too. Why do you hold back?' Baba said, 'Honoured masters, we yogis have nothing worth showing. Without the Guru, the sangat and Gurbani, there is no other support, not a hair's worth. The Creator, in the form of Shiva, does not move — it is the earth he sets moving. The Siddhas' magic and spells fell away, their power hidden by the Guru's Word. One letter stands for the Giver, the Guru; another for the price no one has ever found. That humble Nanak takes shelter in the True Guru.'

Baba said, 'Honoured masters, hear the Word — I speak only truth. Apart from the True Name we have no other wonder. I could wear a robe of fire and build my house on the Himalayan snow; I could cook a meal of iron, and lead the whole earth by a rein; I could stretch myself so wide as to harness the whole earth and drive it; I could weigh earth and sky together and lift them on a scale-pan against a single coin; I could keep such power in myself and pass it on to anyone I named. But without the True Name it is all a passing shadow of cloud.'

Baba held the discussion with the masters, and by the Word peace came among the Siddhas. He won the Shivratri fair, and the six schools offered him their salute. The Siddhas spoke fair words: 'Blessed, Nanak, is your great earning. A great one has appeared, kindling light in the dark age.' Saying farewell, Baba rose and set out on the journey to Multan. There the Muslim masters of Multan came to meet him with a cup brimming full of milk. Baba drew a jasmine flower from under his arm and set it on the milk — as the Ganga merges into the sea, so he took his place, adding to the fullness without spilling a drop.

After the visit to Multan, Baba came back to Kartarpur. Day by day his glory rose higher: in the dark age Nanak meditated on the Name. To ask for anything but the Name is to bring sorrow on sorrow down on your own head. He struck his coin in the world, and Nanak set the spotless Path going. He installed Lahina — Guru Angad — in his own lifetime, waving the canopy of Guruship over his head. Merging his light into his light, the True Guru Nanak changed his form. No one could grasp it — a wonder of wonders he showed. Changing the body, he made a new form.

The same mark, the same canopy over the head, the same true throne now set in place. With Guru Nanak's own seal in hand, the proclamation of Guru Angad went out. Leaving Kartarpur, he sat at Khadur and kindled the light there. What had been sown before now sprang up; everything else was false cleverness. What Lahina had received from Nanak, that gift now came to the house of Amardas. Guru Amardas sat as the very form of the everlasting One, and the Gurmukh received the gift of God. Then Goindwal was founded — a wonderful play that cannot be grasped. The gift, the light and the greatness are the Master's own.

What was destined before must be given, and the thing goes home to the one it belongs to. The Sodhi king sat on the throne — Ramdas, called the True Guru. He had the great pool dug and kindled the light at Amritsar. This is the upside-down play of the Master: the Ganga turned back to merge into the sea. You receive back only what is truly your own; without the gift, nothing comes to hand. Then it came to the house of Arjan — the son called the Guru of the world. 'I will not let it pass out of the Sodhis' — no one else could bear that unbearable weight. The treasure of the house stays home inside the house.

Five cups, five masters — and now the sixth master sat, the great Guru. Changing the body of Arjan, the form of Hargobind was made ready. The line of the Sodhis went on, showing its face turn after turn. The Guru is a hero who shatters armies, a great warrior and a great doer of good. When the Sikhs ask in prayer, they gaze on the sight of six Masters in one. The unreachable, unknowable True Guru speaks: 'Listen, O world.' The dark age, and the line of the Sodhis, he set on a firm, unshakable footing. Age after age, the True Guru takes form among us.

In the first age, the Age of Truth, the True Guru was Vasudev — V for Vishnu, whose Name he had people chant. In the third age the True Guru was Hari-Krishna — H for Hari, the Name he had them chant. In the second age the True Guru was Ram — R for Ram, whose remembrance brings peace. In the dark age it is Nanak, Guru Gobind — G for Gobind, the Name now sounded. The four have risen through the four ages, and go to merge into the One who holds them all. Putting those four letters together into one — Waheguru — he has us say this name of praise. And from wherever it arose, there it merges once more.
