Chapter 2

Var 2 · The One Himself, in All

Twenty everyday wonders — a mirror, a musician, one rain in many vessels, milk into butter — each showing the one Creator at work inside everything.

1 · The Mirror in His Own Hand

āpanaṛai hath ārasī āpe hī dekhai | āpe dekh dikhāidā chhia darasan bhekhai | jehā mūh kar bhālidā tevehai lekhai | hasade hasadā dekhīai so rūp sarekhai | rodai disai rovadā hoe nimakh nimekhai | āpe āp varattadā satisaṅg visekhai |1|

The One holds the mirror in His own hand, and gazes into it Himself. He looks and shows Himself through the six schools of philosophy and all their many costumes. Whatever face a person brings to it, exactly that is the reflection it records. Where laughter looks in, laughter is seen, and that is the shape it takes; where weeping gazes, weeping appears, moment by moment. The One Himself is at work in everything, and He shines out most clearly in the company of the true.

2 · The Musician and the Melody

jiu jantrī hath jantr lai sabh rāg vajāe | āpe suṇ suṇ magan hoi āpe guṇ gāe | sabad surat liv līṇ hoi āp rījh rījhāe | kathatā bakatā āp hai suratā liv lāe | āpe hī visamād hoi sarabaṅg samāe | āpe āp varattadā guramukh patīāe |2|

A musician takes his instrument in hand and plays every melody; then, listening and listening, he is lost in the joy of it and sings His praise. Mind merged in the Word, He delights and is delighted. He is the speaker Himself and the singer Himself, and He is the listener too, lost in love. He becomes wonder itself, and melts into every limb of creation. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh is sure of it.

3 · Himself the Taste

āpe bhukhā hoi kai āp jāi rasoī | bhojan āp baṇāidā ras vich ras goī | āpe khāi salāh kai hoi tripat samoī | āpe rasīā āp ras ras rasanā bhoī | dātā bhugatā āp hai sarabaṅg samoī | āpe āp varattadā guramukh sukh hoī |3|

He grows hungry Himself and goes to the kitchen; He cooks the food Himself, folding one good taste inside another. He eats it Himself and praises it, and is filled and content. He is the taster Himself and the taste itself, savouring the flavour on the tongue. He is the giver Himself and the eater Himself, held inside it all. The One Himself is at work in everything, and in the Gurmukh He becomes joy.

4 · Himself Asleep and Dreaming

āpe palaṅgh vichhāi kai āp andar saundā | suhaṇe andar jāi kai desantar bhaundā | raṅk rāu rāu raṅk hoi dukh sukh vich paundā | tatā sīarā hoi jal āvaṭaṇ khaundā | harakh sog vich dhānvadā chāvāe chaundā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh sukh raundā |4|

He spreads the bed Himself and lies down on it; entering a dream, He wanders through far countries. The poor man becomes a king and the king a poor man, falling into pain and pleasure. Water turns hot and cold, boiling and bubbling away. In joy and in grief He runs about, moved from within, and speaks as He is moved. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh tastes the peace of it.

5 · One Rain, Many Vessels

samasar varasai svānt būnd jiu sabhanī thāī | jal andar jal hoi milai dharatī bahu bhāī | kirakh birakh ras kas ghaṇe phal phul suhāī | kele vich kapūr hoi sītal sukhadāī | motī hovai sip muh bahu mol mulāī | bisīar de muh kālakūṭ chitave buriāī | āpe āp varattadā satisaṅg subhāī |5|

The raindrop falls the same on every place, and mixing in, becomes water within water on the welcoming earth. In field and tree it turns into a hundred juices, into lovely fruit and flower. In the plantain it becomes cooling camphor; in the oyster's mouth a priceless pearl; in the snake's mouth deadly poison, brooding on harm. It is the same rain, but the vessel makes the difference. The One Himself is at work in everything, and in the sangat He becomes love.

6 · The Company One Keeps

soī tāmbā raṅg saṅg jiu kaihān hoī | soī tāmbā jisat mil pital avaloī | soī sīse saṅgatī bhaṅgār bhuloī | tāmbā pāras parasiā hoi kañchan soī | soī tāmbā bhasam hoi aukhadh kar bhoī | āpe āp varattadā saṅgat guṇ goī |6|

The same copper joined with tin becomes bell-metal; the same copper mixed with zinc is seen as brass; the same copper in poor company is spoiled with lead. But copper touched by the stone that turns iron into gold becomes pure gold; and that same copper, burnt to ash, becomes healing medicine. The One Himself is at work in everything, and in the sangat His praises are sung.

7 · Water Takes the Colour

pāṇī kāle raṅg vich jiu kālā disai | ratā rate raṅg vich mil mel salisai | pīlai pīlā hoi milai hit jehī visai | sāvā sāve raṅg mil sabh raṅg sarisai | tatā ṭhaṇḍhā hoi kai hit jisai tisai | āpe āp varattadā guramukh sukh jisai |7|

Water in a black dye looks black; in red it turns red, blending and merging; it goes yellow where the yellow tint takes it; it matches green with green, keeping to every shade; it runs hot or cold as it is leaned one way or the other — it takes on whatever it is joined to. The One Himself is at work in everything, and to the Gurmukh He becomes peace.

8 · Fire, Lamp, and Ink

dīvā balai baisantarahu chānaṇ anhere | dīpak vichahun mas hoi kamm āi likhere | kajal hovai kāmaṇī saṅg bhale bhalere | masavāṇī har jas likhai daphatar agalere | āpe āp varattadā guramukh chauphere |8|

A lamp burns from fire and gives light in the dark. From the lamp comes soot, which the writer puts to use; that soot becomes the beauty-spot on a fair face, good in good company; and as ink it writes the praise of God, filling book after book. The One Himself is at work in everything, all around the Gurmukh on every side.

9 · The Seed and the Tree

birakh hovai bīu bījīai karadā pāsārā | jaṛ andar peḍ bāharā bahu ḍāl bisathārā | pat phul phalīdā ras raṅg savārā | vās nivās ulās kar hoi vaḍ paravārā | phal vich bīu sañjīu hoi phal phale hajārā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh nisatārā |9|

A seed is sown and becomes a tree, spreading itself wide. Root inside, trunk outside, and a great spread of branches; leaves, flowers and fruit, dressed in juice and colour; scent, shelter and gladness, making a great family. Inside the fruit the seed lives again, and bears fruit by the thousand. The One Himself is at work in everything, and through the Gurmukh He carries everyone across.

10 · Cotton into Cloth

hove sūt kapāh dā kar tāṇā vāṇā | sūtahu kapaṛ jāṇīai ākhāṇ vakhāṇā | chausī tai chautār hoi gaṅgā jal jāṇā | khāsā malamal sirīsāph tan sukh man bhāṇā | pāg dupaṭā cholaṇā paṭukā paravāṇā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh raṅg māṇā |10|

From cotton comes thread, and the thread is set as the long threads and the crossing threads of the loom; from thread comes cloth, known by all its named kinds — fine weaves as clear as Ganga water, muslins and light cottons that ease the body and please the mind, turban and scarf, robe and sash, each in its own place. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh enjoys the colours.

11 · Gold into Ornaments

suniārā suinā ghaṛai gahaṇe sāvāre | pipal vatare vālīā tānauṛe tāre | vesar nath vakhāṇīai kaṇṭh mālā dhāre | ṭīkat maṇīā motisar gajare pāsāre | durr buhaṭṭā gol chhāp kar bahu parakāre | āpe āp varattadā guramukh vīchāre |11|

The goldsmith works the gold and shapes it into ornaments — earrings and pendants, drop-strings and studs; nose-rings and jewels, and garlands for the throat; forehead-jewels and strings of pearls, and bracelets spread wide; drops round and drops set, of many kinds. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh thinks it over.

12 · The Sugarcane

gannā kolū pīṛīai ras de darahālā | koī kare guṛ bhelīān ko sakar vālā | koī khaṇḍ savāradā makkhaṇ massālā | hovai misarī kalīkand miṭhiāī ḍhālā | khāvai rājā raṅk kar ras bhog sukhālā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh sukhālā |12|

The sugarcane is crushed in the press and gives up its juice at once; one person makes it into cakes of raw sugar, another into coarse sugar; one refines white sugar with butter and spice; it becomes rock-candy and sweets pressed into many moulds. King and poor man alike taste it and enjoy the sweetness. The One Himself is at work in everything, and to the Gurmukh He becomes bliss.

13 · Milk into Butter

gāī raṅg biraṅg bahu dudh ujal varaṇā | dudhahu dahī jamāīai kar nihachal dharaṇā | dahī viloi aloīai chhāh makhaṇ taraṇā | makhaṇ tāi auṭāi kai ghiu niramal karaṇā | hom jag naīved kar sabh kāraj saraṇā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh hoi jaraṇā |13|

Cows of many colours give milk of one pure white. From milk the curd is set, made firm and still; churn the curd, and buttermilk and butter rise; heat the butter and clear it, and it becomes spotless cooking butter — fit for the sacred fire, the offering and the rite, and good for every use. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh learns to bear all things with grace.

14 · One Sun, All Time

pal ghaṛīā mūrat pahar thit vār gaṇāe | dui pakh bārah māh kar sañjog baṇāe | chhia rutī varatāīān bahu chalit baṇāe | sūraj ik varatadā lok ved alāe | chār varan chhia darasanān bahu panth chalāe | āpe āp varattadā guramukh samajhāe |14|

Moments and hours, watches of the day, days of the moon and days of the week are all counted out; the two halves of the month and the twelve months make their turning meetings; six seasons come round, making play upon play. One sun works through it all, as the people and the Vedas both declare. Four castes, six schools and many paths were set going. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh is brought to understand.

15 · One Fire in Every Tree

ik pāṇī ik dharat hai bahu birakh upāe | aphal saphal parakār bahu phal phul suhāe | bahu ras raṅg suvāsanā parakirat subhāe | baisantar ik varan hoi sabh taravar chhāe | gupatahu paragaṭ hoi kai bhasamant karāe | āpe āp varattadā guramukh sukh pāe |15|

One water, one earth, and many trees grow; barren and fruitful of every kind, lovely with fruit and flower; many juices, colours and scents, each by its own nature. Yet one fire, of a single form, lies hidden inside every tree; hidden, it comes out, and turns it all to ash. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh finds peace.

16 · Sandalwood and the Sangat

chandan vās vaṇāsapat sabh chandan hovai | asaṭ dhāt ik dhāt hoi saṅg pāras ḍhovai | nadīā nāle vāhaṛai mil gaṅg gaṅgovai | patit udhāraṇ sādhasaṅg pāpān mal dhovai | narak nivār asaṅkh hoi lakh patit saṅgovai | āpe āp varattadā guramukh alovai |16|

By the scent of sandalwood the whole grove becomes sandal; eight different metals become one metal when they touch the stone that turns iron into gold; streams and brooks that meet the Ganga become the Ganga. So the sangat, which lifts up the fallen, washes away the dirt of sins; ending countless hells, it gathers up the fallen in their thousands. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh sees it.

17 · The Many Loves

dīpak het pataṅg dā jal mīn tarandā | mirag nād visamād hai bhavar kaval vasandā | chand chakor parīt hai dekh dhiān dharandā | chakavī sūraj het hai sañjog baṇandā | nār bhatār piār hai mān put milandā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh parachandā |17|

The moth's love for the flame; the fish that can live only in water; the deer held spellbound by sound; the bee that lives in the lotus; the partridge gazing in love at the moon; the sheldrake and the sun, meeting only at their appointed hour; the wife's love for her husband, and the mother meeting her child. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh is made glad.

18 · One Indweller of the Body

akhī andar dekhadā sabh choj viḍāṇā | kannī suṇadā surat kar ākhāṇ vakhāṇā | jībhai andar boladā bahu sād lubhāṇā | hathīn kirat kamānvadā pag chalai sujāṇā | dehī andar ik man indrī paravāṇā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh sukh māṇā |18|

In the eyes He sees all the wonderful plays; through the ears He listens closely and takes in what is told; on the tongue He speaks, drawn to a hundred tastes; with the hands He does honest work, and on the feet He walks wisely. Inside the body is one mind, ruling all the senses. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh enjoys the peace of it.

19 · Air the Guru, Water the Father

pavaṇ gurū gur sabad hai rāg nād vīchārā | māt pitā jal dharat hai utapat sansārā | dāī dāiā rāt dihu varate varatārā | siv sakatī dā khel mel parakirat pasārā | pārabraham pūran braham ghaṭ chand akārā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh niradhārā |19|

The air is the Guru, and the Guru's Word is the melody and the sound to dwell upon; water and earth are mother and father, who bring the world to birth; day and night are the two nurses, and the whole play unfolds in their turning. The meeting and play of Shiva and his power spreads out as nature; the Highest One, the Perfect One, is the moon reflected in every heart. The One Himself is at work in everything, and the Gurmukh stands on that ground alone.

20 · Himself, in All

phulān andar vās hai hoi bhavar lubhāṇā | ambān andar ras dhare koil ras māṇā | mor babīhā hoi kai ghaṇ varas siñāṇā | khīr nīr sañjog hoi kalīkand vakhāṇā | oaṅkār akār kar hoi piṇḍ parāṇā | āpe āp varattadā guramukh paravāṇā |20|2|

He puts the scent in the flowers, and becoming the bee He is drawn to it; He sets the sweetness in the mangoes, and as the cuckoo He tastes it; becoming peacock and rain-bird, He knows the coming of the cloud; milk and water are joined, and He is the sweet dish they make; making form out of the Formless, He becomes body and breath. The One Himself is at work in everything, and in the Gurmukh He is made complete.
