1 · I Bow to the Primal Being
ād purakh ādes ād vakhāṇiā | so satigur sachā ves sabad siñāṇiā | sabad surat upades sach samāṇiā | sādhasaṅgat sach des ghar paravāṇiā | prem bhagat āves sahaj sukhāṇiā | bhagat vachhal paraves māṇ nimāṇiā | brahamā bisan mahes ant na jāṇiā | simar sahas phaṇ ses til na pachhāṇiā | guramukh dar daraves sach suhāṇiā |1|
I bow to the First Being, the One spoken of before anything began. That True Guru wears the form of truth, and you come to know Him through the Word. Hold your mind in the Word, and His teaching melts you into the True One. The sangat, the holy company, is the true homeland — the one home that is accepted. Loving devotion comes in, and you rest in a calm, easy peace. He who loves His devotees arrives, and gives honour to the people the world thinks have none. The great gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva never found where He ends. The thousand-headed serpent king kept remembering Him and could not grasp a single grain of Him. The Gurmukh, the one who turns toward the Guru, stands like a beggar at His door, and the True One makes him beautiful.
2 · Guru and Disciple
gur chele raharās alakh abheu hai | gur chele sābās nānak deu hai | guramat sahaj nivās siphat sameu hai | sabad surat paragās achhal achheu hai | guramukh ās nirās mat arakheu hai | kām karodh viṇās siphat sameu hai | sat santokh ulās sakat na seu hai | ghar hī vich udās sach sucheu hai | vīh ikīh abhiās gur sikh deu hai |2|
The bond of Guru and disciple is past all knowing, too deep to measure — and Guru Nanak Dev is its blessing and its glory. The Guru's wisdom lets you rest in ease, lost in His praise. Hold your mind in the Word and light comes: whole, and never fooled. The Gurmukh turns his hoping into wanting nothing, and his mind goes where nothing can reach it. Lust and anger are finished, and he is soaked in praise. Truth, contentment, gladness — he leans on no worldly power, only on service. He lives free of clinging in the middle of his own household, true and clean. He rises past the world's counting: this is what the Guru gives his Sikh.
3 · The Gurmukh, Guest of the World
gur chelā paravāṇ guramukh jāṇīai | guramukh choj viḍāṇ akatth kathāṇīai | kudarat no kurabāṇ kādar jāṇīai | guramukh jag mihamāṇ jag mihamāṇīai | satigur sat suhāṇ ākh vakhāṇīai | dar ḍhāḍhī daravāṇ chavai gurabāṇīai | antarijāmī jāṇ het pachhāṇīai | sach sabad nīsāṇ surat samāṇīai | iko dar dībāṇ sabad siñāṇīai |3|
The disciple is accepted by the Guru, and then he is called a Gurmukh. The wonder of the Gurmukh's life is more than words can hold. He gives himself to everything God made, and so comes to know the Maker. The Gurmukh is a guest in this world, and makes the world his guest in return. The True Guru, true and lovely, is spoken of with loving words. At His door the singer calls out Gurbani, the Guru's own Word. Know Him as the One who knows every heart, and learn to recognize His love. The true Word is His flag, and your mind is folded into it. There is one Court and one Throne, and the Word is how you know it.
4 · The Wedding of Guru and Disciple
sabad gurū gur vāhu guramukh pāiā | chelā surat samāhu alakh lakhāiā | gur chele vīvāhu turī chaṛāiā | gahar gambhīr athāhu ajar jarāiā | sachā beparavāhu sach samāiā | pātisāhā pātisāhu hukam chalāiā | laubālī daragāhu bhāṇā bhāiā | sachī siphat salāhu apiu pīāiā | sabad surat asagāhu aghaṛ ghaṛāiā |4|
The Word is the Guru — and the Guru is wonder itself — and the Gurmukh finds Him. The disciple, his mind wholly absorbed, is shown the One no eye can see. When Guru and disciple are wedded, the soul climbs to the highest state. He is deep, and deeper still, past all measuring; what cannot be carried is carried. The True One, free of every care, is merged in Truth. King above kings, He runs the world by His Command. In the Court of that Carefree One, His Will begins to taste sweet. True praise, true adoration — and the nectar is poured out to drink. Mind held in the Word, past all measure, gives shape to what had no shape.
5 · The Priceless Path
No price can buy it: it is priceless, past all valuing. Put it on the scale, and no scale can weigh it. In its own home its throne stands firm, and nothing can shake it. The Gurmukh's path is pure, and nothing can be mixed into it. The story is beyond telling, and can never be fully told. It never misses and never tricks, and it can never lead you astray. The Gurmukh's path does not waver, and melts into calm ease. Drink from the pool of nectar — this is what the Gurmukh is given. Out of a hundred thousand seekers one is a true find, and he never counts himself as one.
6 · The Trade of the Gursikh
saudā ikat haṭ sabad visāhīai | pūrā pūre vaṭ ki ākh salāhīai | kade na hovai ghaṭ sachī patisāhīai | pūre satigur khaṭ akhuṭ samāhīai | sādhasaṅgat paragaṭṭ sadā nibāhīai | chāval ikate saṭ na dūjī vāhīai | jam dī phāhī kaṭ dād ilāhīai | pañje dūt saṅghaṭ su ḍherī ḍhāhīai | pāṇī jiu harihaṭ su khet umāhīai |6|
The goods are sold at one shop only, and are bought with the Word. The Perfect One weighs them perfectly — how could any words praise that? The measure never falls short: this is the true kingdom. Earn from the perfect True Guru, and you melt into a treasure that never runs out. In the sangat it is made plain, and it is held up forever. It is rice husked at a single stroke, needing no second threshing. It cuts the rope of death: a gift from God. The five thieves — lust, anger, greed, clinging and pride — are knocked down and their pile is spilled. Like water climbing the well-wheel, it floods the field with joy.
7 · The True Guru
pūrā satigur āp na alakh lakhāvaī | dekhai thāp uthāp jiu tis bhāvaī | lep na punn na pāp upāi samāvaī | lagū var na sarāp na āp jaṇāvaī | gāvai sabad alāp akath suṇāvaī | akath kathā jap jāp na jagat kamāvaī | pūrai gur paratāp āp gavāvaī | lāhe tinne tāp santāp ghaṭāvaī | gurabāṇī man dhrāp nij ghar āvaī |7|
The perfect True Guru does not put His own hidden greatness on show. He watches, He raises up and He dissolves, just as it pleases Him. Good deeds and bad ones do not stick to Him; He makes, and He draws back in. No blessing and no curse cling to Him, and He does not announce Himself. He sings the Word as melody, and speaks what cannot be spoken. Chanting that untold story, He does not trade in worldly things. By the perfect Guru's glory a person loses his 'I'. He lifts the three burning troubles, and every sorrow grows lighter. Gurbani fills the mind, and you come home to yourself.
8 · How the Gursikh Lives
pūrā satigur sat guramukh bhālīai | pūrī satigur mat sabad samhālīai | daragah dhoīai pat haumai jālīai | ghar hī jog jugat baisaṇ dharamasālīai | pāvaṇ mokh mukat gurasikh pālīai | antar prem bhagat nadar nihālīai | patisāhī ik chhat kharī sukhālīai | pāṇī pīhaṇ ghat sevā ghālīai | masakīnī vich vat chāle chālīai |8|
Seek the perfect True Guru, the True One, the way a Gurmukh seeks. Keep the perfect Guru's wisdom safe inside the Word. In His Court your honour is washed clean and your pride is burned away. Union is found in your own home, sitting in the Guru's house of worship. The Gursikh, the Guru's own Sikh, holds freedom and release dear. Love and devotion live inside him, watched over by grace. He has a kingdom under one canopy, and he stands there in easy peace. He grinds the grain and carries the water, and calls it his service. He walks in humility, and that is the true walk.
9 · Marks of the Gurmukh
guramukh sachā khel gur upadesiā | sādhasaṅgat dā mel sabad avesiā | phulīn tilīn phulel saṅg salesiā | gurasikh nak nakel miṭai andesiā | nhāvaṇ ammrit vel vasan sudesiā | gur jap ridai suhel gur paravesiā | bhāu bhagat bhau bhel sādh saresiā | nit nit naval navel guramukh bhesiā | khair dalāl dalel sev sahesiā |9|
The Guru teaches the Gurmukh how to live his true life. He joins the sangat, and the Word brings him alive. Sesame seeds crushed for their oil come out as perfume; in the same way the Gursikh, led like a willing ox and given up entirely, loses every fear. He bathes in the still hour before dawn, and lives in the land of truth. Remembering the Guru is ease in the heart, for the Guru has moved in. Love, devotion and awe are his boat, made fine in holy company. Fresh and new each day, the Gurmukh is dressed in beauty. He is a trader in goodness, brave, and settled into his service.
10 · The Dust of the Feet
gur mūrat kar dhiān sadā hajūr hai | guramukh sabad giān neṛ na dūr hai | purab likhat nīsāṇ karam aṅkūr hai | gur sevā paradhān sevak sūr hai | pūran param nidhān sad bharapūr hai | sādhasaṅgat asathān jagamag nūr hai | lakh lakh sasīar bhān kiraṇ ṭharūr hai | lakh lakh bed purāṇ kīratan chūr hai | bhagat vachhal paravāṇ charaṇā dhūr hai |10|
Hold the Guru's face in your mind, and you find Him always here. The Gurmukh keeps the Word's wisdom close, and it is never far away. What was written for you long ago now sprouts like a seed. Serving the Guru is the highest thing there is, and that servant is the real hero. The perfect, highest treasure is always brimming over. The sangat is the true throne, shining with light. A hundred thousand moons and suns — and its rays are cooling, not burning. Countless Vedas and Puranas, the oldest holy books and old holy stories, are ground to dust before its kirtan, its singing of God's praise. The Lover of His devotees accepts the dust of their feet.
11 · Guru and Sikh Made One
gur sikh sikh gur soi alakh lakhāiā | gur dīkhiā lai sikh sikh sadāiā | gur sikh ikko hoi jo gur bhāiā | hīrā kaṇī paroi hīr bidhāiā | jal taraṅg avaloi salil samāiā | jotī jot samoi dīp dīpāiā | acharaj acharaj ḍhoi chalit baṇāiā | dudhahu dahī viloi ghiu kaḍhāiā | ik chānaṇ trihu loi pragaṭīāiā |11|
The Guru's Sikh and the Sikh's Guru are one and the same: the unseen made plain. When the Sikh takes the Guru's initiation, only then is he called a Sikh. Guru and Sikh become one whenever it pleases the Guru. A diamond is drilled with diamond dust and threaded onto a diamond. A wave you watch on the water sinks back into the water. Light melts into Light, one lamp lighting the next. Wonder meets wonder, and a play begins. Milk is set into curd, and butter is churned out of it. One light shines across all three worlds.
12 · The Line of the Gurus
satigur nānak deu gurā gur hoiā | aṅgad alakh abheu sahaj samoiā | amarahu amar sameu alakh aloiā | rām nām arikheu ammrit choiā | gur arajan kar seu ḍhoai ḍhoiā | gur harigobind ameu amiu viloiā | sachā sach sucheu sach khaloiā | ātam agah gaheu sabad paroiā | guramukh abhar bhareu bharam bhau khoiā |12|
Guru Nanak Dev became the Guru of all gurus. In Guru Angad he merged easily — unseen, past all understanding. In Guru Amardas the Deathless One merged, unseen and yet clearly seen. In Guru Ram Das the Name that never dies dripped down like nectar. Guru Arjan, serving with love, made his offering. Guru Hargobind, who has no limit, churned that nectar. The True One stood firm in truth, in truth and in cleanness. The Self no one can reach was grasped, and threaded onto the Word. The Gurmukh, who could never be filled, was filled, and doubt and fear were thrown away.
13 · The Gurmukh's Way
sādhasaṅgat bhau bhāu sahaj bairāg hai | guramukh sahaj subhāu surat su jāg hai | madhur bachan ālāu haumai tiāg hai | satigur mat parathāu sadā anurāg hai | piram piāle sāu masatak bhāg hai | braham jot brahamāu giān charāg hai | antar guramat chāu alipat adāg hai | vīh ikīh chaṛhāu sadā suhāg hai |13|
In the sangat there is awe and love, calm ease and freedom from clinging. The Gurmukh leans that way by nature, with his mind wide awake. He speaks sweet words and lets his pride go. The True Guru's wisdom is the ground he stands on, always in loving devotion. He tastes the cup of love, with good fortune written on his forehead. God's own light, the Light of Brahm, is there, and knowing it is his lamp. Inside, the Gurmukh's longing is spotless and clean. He rises past the world's counting, and is forever the true bride.
14 · The Gurmukh, Refined Like the Swan
guramukh sabad samhāl surat samālīai | guramukh nadar nihāl neh nihālīai | guramukh sevā ghāl virale ghālīai | guramukh dīn daiāl het hiālīai | guramukh nibahai nāl gurasikh pālīai | ratan padārath lāl guramukh bhālīai | guramukh akal akāl bhagat sukhālīai | guramukh hansā ḍhāl rasik rasālīai |14|
The Gurmukh keeps the Word, and tends his mind with care. Blessed by grace, the Gurmukh is held dear in love. The Gurmukh does his service — and a servant like that is rare. Kind to the weak, the Gurmukh loves with his whole heart. The Gurmukh stands beside you, and the Gursikh is raised up. Jewels, treasures and rubies are what the Gurmukh goes looking for. The Gurmukh's wisdom is the Deathless One, and devotion is his rest. The Gurmukh, made fine like the swan that sips the milk and leaves the water, tastes the sweetness of love.
15 · The Mool Mantar, the Guru's First Words
ekā ekaṅkār likh dekhāliā | ūṛā oaṅkār pās bahāliā | sat nām karatār nirabhau bhāliā | niravairahu jaikār ajūn akāliā | sach nīsāṇ apār jot ujāliā | pañj akhar upakār nām samāliā | paramesur sukh sār nadar nihāliā | nau aṅg sunn sumār saṅg nirāliā | nīl anīl vīchār piram piāliā |15|
He wrote the One out and showed it: Ik Onkar, the One God. Beside the figure one He set the letter Oora, which sounds out 'Onkar'. Sat Naam — His Name is True. He is the Maker, and He has no fear. He carries no hatred, and He always wins. He was never born, and time cannot touch Him. His true flag has no end, and its light is blazing. These are letters of grace, and the Name is held inside them. He is the Highest One, peace itself, seen when His kind glance falls on you. In the great emptiness He stands apart, and yet He is inside everything. Think on that blue beyond blue, and you drink the cup of love.
16 · Four Castes, One Brotherhood
chār varan satisaṅg guramukh meliā | jāṇ tambolahu raṅg guramukh cheliā | pañje sabad abhaṅg anahad keliā | satigur sabad taraṅg sadā suheliā | sabad surat parasaṅg giān saṅg meliā | rāg nād sarabaṅg ahinis bheliā | sabad anāhad raṅg sujh ikeliā | guramukh panth nipaṅg bārah kheliā |16|
The Gurmukh joined the four castes together in the sangat. Chewed betel leaf turns every mouth the same red; in the same way the Gurmukh makes them one. The five sounds never break off, and the melody no one plays is at play. The True Guru's Word comes in waves, always full of bliss. Mind held in the Word, joined together with knowing. Melody and sound become whole, and day and night blend into one. The colour of that unplayed Word is seen and known by him alone. The Gurmukh's path is unmuddied, played out past the twelve schools of the yogis.
17 · The Gurmukh's Healing Salve

The Command came at the very beginning, from the Spotless One. Sound met sound, and that meeting destroyed the 'I'. Wonder of wonders — this is the healing salve the Gurmukh paints on his eyes. By the Guru's wisdom and grace, doubt comes undone. The First Being was there before everything, outside time, and cannot be destroyed. Shiva and the old sages served Him, and He showed them His grace. Remember Him age after age: that is the Gursikh's cleansing bath. The taste of the cup of love is the highest joy. From the start, before the ages, with no beginning at all — He is everyone's delight.

Become like a corpse: that is how you become a disciple, and words alone will not do it. Be patient, be faithful, be a witness who would give his life, and throw off doubt and fear. Be like a bought servant, harnessed to the work. No hunger for him, no sleep, no eating, no resting. Always fresh at the grinding-mill, and carrying the water. Busy with the fan, and washing and rubbing the feet. A servant, steady and serious, who neither laughs nor cries. He has reached the door of the holy poor, and he is soaked in the juice of love. Blessed like the Eid moon that everyone waits for and welcomes, he stands firm.
19 · What the Disciple Should Do

Fall at His feet and become the dust of His feet: that is how to become a disciple. Lost in the Guru's face, dying to yourself again and again, you truly live. Let go of every worldly tie, and be dyed in that beautiful colour. Want nothing else, look nowhere else; stitch your mind to His shelter. Take the holy cup of love and drink its sweet nectar. Make humility your resting-place, and become steady. Cut yourself loose from the ten pulls of the senses, and rest in calm ease. Stay awake to the Guru's word, and do not let the mind wander off. Mind held in the Word, made beautiful, cross over to the far shore.

He went to the True Guru's shelter and bowed his head. He fixed his mind on the Guru's feet and laid his forehead there. He set the Guru's wisdom in his heart, and lost his 'I'. In calm ease the Gurmukh made God's Will his delight. Mind held in the Word, he lived out the Command. In the sangat, in awe and love, he found his own true home. Content at those lotus feet, the bee was drawn in and would not leave. Sunk in the treasure of peace, he drank the nectar. Blessed is the mother who gave him birth — his coming into the world is complete.
