1 · How Human Birth Is Made Worthwhile
oaṅkār akār kar pauṇ pāṇī baisantar dhāre | dharat akās vichhoṛian chand sūr de jot savāre | khāṇī chār bandhān kar lakh chaurāsīh jūn duāre | ikas ikas jūn vich jīa jant aṇagaṇat apāre | māṇas janam dulambh hai saphal janam gur saraṇ udhāre | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad liv bhāi bhagat gur giān vīchāre | paraupakārī gurū piāre |1|
He made form out of Onkar, the one sound, and set air, water and fire in place. He parted earth from sky, and dressed them with the light of the moon and the sun. He bound all living things into four ways of being born — from the egg, from the womb, from sweat and from the seed — and opened the door to eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life, and inside each kind are creatures past counting. A human birth is hard to win, and the birth that is truly worth something takes shelter with the Guru. In the sangat, the holy company, the mind is held in the Guru's Word; there is loving devotion, and the Guru's wisdom is turned over in the heart. The Guru is dear, and always doing good to everyone.
2 · Humility — the Lowly Earth
sabh dūn nīvī dharat hai āp gavāi hoī oḍīṇī | dhīraj dharam santokh driṛ pairā heṭh rahai liv līṇī | sādh janān de charaṇ chhuh āḍhīṇī hoī lākhīṇī | ammrit būnd suhāvaṇī chhahabar chhalak reṇ hoi rīṇī | miliā māṇ nimāṇīai piram piālā pīi patīṇī | jo bījai soī luṇai sabh ras kas bahu raṅg raṅgīṇī | guramakh sukh phal hai masakīṇī |2|
Lower than everything is the earth, which forgets itself and patiently carries it all. Steady, faithful to its duty and content, it stays under our feet, soaked in love. Touched by the feet of holy people, what was worthless turns precious. The lovely raindrop, brimming and spilling over, becomes the dust of the dust. Honour goes to the humble, who drink the cup of love and are content. What you plant is what you harvest, in all its many tastes and colours. Humility is the Gurmukh's fruit of joy.
3 · The Lesson of the Feet
māṇas deh su kheh hai tis vich jībhai laī nakībī | akhī dekhan rūp raṅg rāg nād kann karan rakībī | nak suvās nivās hai pañje dūt burī taratībī | sabh dūn nīve charaṇ hoi āp gavāi nasīb nasībī | haumai rog miṭāidā satigur pūrā karai tabībī | pairī pai raharās kar gur sikh suṇ gurasikh manībī | muradā hoi murīd garībī |3|
This human body is only dust, and yet inside it the tongue plays the announcer. The eyes take in shapes and colours; the ears take in music and sound. The breath lives in the nose — and the five thieves line up there in their wicked order. Lowest of all are the feet, and by forgetting themselves they become the most fortunate of all. The perfect True Guru is the healer who cures the sickness of pride. Fall at His feet and bow; Gursikh, listen to the Guru and honour Him. Become like a corpse — become a disciple — through humility.
4 · Small Things Made Great
lahuṛī hoi chīchuṅgalī paidhī chhāp milī vaḍiāī | lahuṛī ghanahar būnd hui paragaṭ motī sip samāī | lahuṛī būṭī kesarai mathai ṭikā sobhā pāī | lahuṛī pāras patharī asaṭ dhāt kañchan karavāī | jiu maṇ lahuṛe sap sir dekhai luk luk lok lukāī | jāṇ rasāiṇ pāriahu ratī mul na jai mulāī | āp gavāi na āp gaṇāī |4|
The little finger is small, and yet wearing the ring it gains honour. The raincloud's drop is small, and yet inside the oyster it becomes a pearl. The saffron sprout is small, and yet on the forehead it earns glory as the sacred mark. The magic stone that turns iron into gold is small, and yet its touch turns eight ordinary metals into gold. It is like the jewel on the little snake's head, which people hide and hide again just to catch a look at it. Know it as the priceless cure that stone gives, worth more than any price. Lose yourself, and never count yourself.
5 · Humility from Fire and Water
ag tatī jal sīarā kit avaguṇ kit guṇ vīchārā | agī dhūā dhaulahar jal niramal gur giān suchārā | kul dīpak baisantarahu jal kul kaval vaḍe paravārā | dīpak het pataṅg dā kaval bhavar paragaṭ pāhārā | agī lāṭ uchāṭ hai sir uchā kar karai kuchārā | sir nīvā nīvāṇ vās pāṇī andar paraupakārā | niv chalai so gurū piārā |5|
Fire is hot and water is cool — weigh up which one carries the fault and which the virtue. Fire gives off smoke and soot; water is clean, like the Guru's clear wisdom. Fire is the lamp of the household; in the water the lotus lives with its great family. The moth dies for love of the flame; the lotus and the bee are famous the world over. The flame of the fire leaps up restlessly, holding its head high and wild. Water keeps its head down, settles in the low places, and does good to everyone. The one who walks bowed low is the one the Guru loves.
6 · Two Dyes: Madder and Safflower
raṅg majīṭh kasumbh dā kachā pakā kit vīchāre | dharatī ukhaṇ kaḍhīai mūl majīṭh jaṛī jaṛatāre | ukhal muhale kuṭīai pīhaṇ pīsai chakī bhāre | sahai avaṭṭaṇ agg dā hoi piārī milai piāre | pohalīahu sir kaḍh kai phul kasumbh chalumbh khilāre | khaṭ turasī de raṅgīai kapaṭ sanehu rahai dih chāre | nīvā jiṇai ucherā hāre |6|
Look at two dyes, madder and safflower, and weigh which one holds and which one fades. Madder is a root dug right out of the earth, then pounded in the mortar and ground heavy in the mill. It stands the boiling of the fire, and so comes out lovely and meets its beloved as a red that will not run. The safflower lifts its head and spreads a bright orange bloom; dyed with sour acid, its pretend love lasts about four days. The lowly one wins, and the proud one loses.
7 · The Ant and the Small Creatures
kīṛī nikaṛī chalit kar bhriṅgī no mil bhriṅgī hovai | nikaṛī disai makaṛī sūt muhahu kaḍh phir saṅgovai | nikaṛī makh vakhāṇīai mākhio miṭhā bhāgaṭh hovai | nikaṛā kīṛā ākhīai paṭ paṭole kar ḍhaṅg ḍhovai | guṭakā muh vich pāi kai des disantar jāi khaṛovai | motī māṇak hīriā pātisāhu lai hār parovai | pāi samāiṇ dahī bilovai |7|
The tiny ant, by a wonderful play, meets the bhringi wasp and turns into a bhringi itself. The spider looks small, and yet it draws thread out of its own mouth and gathers it back again. The bee is small, and yet its honey is sweet and it grows rich. The silkworm is called small, and yet it makes fine silk cloth. With a magic pill held in the mouth, a person can stand suddenly in far-off countries. Pearls, gems and diamonds are what the king takes and strings into a necklace. Add the starter to the milk, and the curd is set and churned into butter.
8 · The Grass and the Cow
latān heṭh latāṛīai ghāhu na kaḍhai sāhu vichārā | goras de khaṛ khāi kai gāi garībī paraupakārā | dudhahu dahī jamāīai daīahu makhaṇ chhāh piārā | ghia te hovan hom jag ḍhaṅg suārath chaj achārā | dharam dhaul paragaṭ hoi dhīraj vahai sahai sir bhārā | ik ik jāu jaṇediān chahu chakā vich vag hajārā | triṇ andar vaḍā pāsārā |8|
Trodden underfoot, the poor grass does not even sigh. The cow eats that grass and gives milk — humble, and doing good to others. From milk comes curd, and from curd the beloved butter and buttermilk. From that butter come the sacred fire and its rites, and every good use and custom. The bull of duty appears, the one that patiently carries the earth's weight on its head. They are born one at a time, and yet in all four directions the herds run to thousands. In a single blade of grass there is a whole spreading world.
9 · The Sesame Seed
lahuṛā til hoi jammiā nīchahu nīch na āp gaṇāiā | phulā saṅgat vasiā hoi niragandh sugandh suhāiā | kolū pāi pīṛāiā hoi phulel khel varatāiā | patit pavitr chalitr kar patisāh sir dhar sukh pāiā | dīvai pāi jalāiā kul dīpak jag birad sadāiā | kajal hoā dīviahu akhī andar jāi samāiā | bālā hoi na vaḍā kahāiā |9|
The little sesame seed is born, lowest of the low, and never counts itself. Living in the company of flowers, the seed with no scent of its own becomes fragrant and lovely. Put into the press and crushed, it turns into sweet-smelling oil, and a new play begins. It makes the fallen pure, is set on the king's head, and finds joy there. Poured into the lamp and lit, it becomes the household lamp, and is called everlasting. Turning into soot from that lamp, it goes and rests inside the eyes as black eye-paint. It stays small, and is never called great.
10 · The Cotton Seed

Becoming a cotton seed, sown in the world, the body is mixed into the dust. It grows into the cotton plant, and the pods laugh and burst open. Two rollers press the seeds out of it, and lock by lock it is teased apart. It is combed and fluffed, and again and again spun into thread. It is woven, bleached, and put through the suffering of the dye-pot to take its colour. The scissors cut it, and needle and thread join it and sew it. Becoming a cloth, it covers the shame of others.
11 · The Pomegranate Seed
dāṇā hoi anār dā hoi dhūṛ dhūṛī vich dhassai | hoi birakh harīāvalā lāl gulālā phal vigassai | ikat birakh sahas phul phul phal ik dū ik sarassai | ik dū dāṇe lakh hoi phal phal de man andar vassai | tis phal toṭ na āvaī guramukh sukh phal ammrit rassai | jiu jiu laiyan toṛ phal tiu tiu phir phir phalīai hassai | niv chalaṇ gur mārag dassai |11|
The pomegranate seed becomes dust, and sinks down into the dust. It grows into a green tree, and red blossoms open into fruit. On one tree a thousand flowers, and each fruit sweeter than the last. From one seed a hundred thousand are born, and every fruit lives on in the mind. That fruit never runs short — the Gurmukh's fruit of joy drips with nectar. The more it is plucked and picked, the more it laughs and fruits again and again. To walk bowed low is the way the Guru shows.
12 · The Refined Gold Coin

Gold is won out of the sand, worked for with loving effort. Washed and washed again, the grains are drawn out, weighed out bit by bit, and grow brighter. Put into the melting pot, it is melted, and the goldsmith is glad at the smelting. Beaten into thin leaf and washed, brushed with salt and fired, it gladdens. Made pure right through, it is set down and rubbed on the testing stone. In the mint the coin is struck, holding still between hammer and anvil, and it grows. And the pure gold coin passes into the treasury.
13 · The Poppy Seed

The poppy seed becomes dust, and in the dust it becomes dust. The friendly plant grows and blossoms into flowers of many colours. Bud upon bud, each one climbing higher than the last. Then it goes to the gallows: its head is cut, and afterwards a canopy is raised above it. Broken into bits and rubbed down, it is dyed the colour of blood and water. The cup of love passed round the gathering brings union, joy and the meeting of hearts. Only the true devotee comes to that gathering.
14 · The Sugarcane

Full of juice, the cane keeps its juice, and stays calm whether it is spoken to or not. It makes the heard unheard and the seen unseen, thinking it all over. Dust settles on its eyes, and yet in those very eyes the new shoot sits and grows. It grows many plants from one, keeps its head bowed low, and is dear to the beloved. Pressed between the two rollers and cut into pieces, it is sweet by that very quality. It rises past the world's counting, and lets the faults of the faithless pile up as their own sin. It is honoured, sweet and true — like the sugarcane.
15 · The Raindrop and the Oyster

The lovely cloud-drop makes itself low and comes down out of the sky. Forgetting itself, seeing the sea, it slips into the mouth of the oyster. The moment the drop goes in, the oyster dives and hides in the deep. The pearl-diver catches it and draws it out, and it gives itself up for someone else's need. To do good to others, it lets its shell be broken open on a stone by another's hand. Knowing or not knowing, it gives the priceless pearl as a gift, and never regrets the giving. Rare is the one whose life is made that fruitful.
16 · Diamond Pierces Diamond

A diamond is drilled by a diamond, with a drill-tip made of diamond itself. Strung on a thread, it becomes a necklace of diamonds, deep and full of delight. In the sangat, with the mind held in the Guru's Word, pride is killed and the mind grows steady. Winning the mind and giving the mind away, goodness inside goodness fills the Gurmukh's body. Fall at the feet and become the dust of the feet: the dust of the holy is the cow that grants every wish, better than any holy water. Licking the plain, saltless stone of discipline, a hundred thousand sweet flavours long to come near it. Rare is the Sikh who truly listens to the Guru, his master and guide.

Listen to the Guru's teaching, Gursikh: be wise inside and simple outside. Keep the mind in the Word and stay awake; without the Guru's Word you are deaf and hear nothing. To go looking for the True Guru's face without the sangat is to be blind and come away empty-handed. Take Waheguru, the Guru's Word, the cup of love — quietly, tasting it. Fall at the feet, become the dust of the feet, wash the feet and drink that water. Make your mind a bee at those lotus feet, and stay unstained in the ocean of fear. This is the one who is free while still alive, dressed in truth.
18 · The Lesson of the Hair

A small hair from the head becomes the whisk that is waved over the holy one's feet. Bathing at the Guru's pool, brimming with tears, it washes those feet. Turning from black to white, it carries the sign that says life is passing on. Fall at the feet, become the dust of the feet — the perfect True Guru blesses with His glance. From the crow's bad habits it becomes the highest swan, and eats and feeds on shining pearls. It is called smaller than a hair — so hear the Guru's teaching and hold it dear, Gursikh. The Gursikh crosses over on the cup of love.
19 · The Lesson of the Fig

A gnat lives inside a fig, and to that gnat the fig is the whole universe. On the fig tree grow a hundred thousand figs, each holding a hundred thousand more, unknown and uncounted. A hundred thousand trees make a garden, a hundred thousand gardens an orchard; a hundred thousand orchards fill one universe, and a hundred thousand universes He holds in a single pore of His skin. If the Merciful One shows mercy, the Gurmukh enjoys the delight of the sangat. Fall at the feet, become the dust of the feet, and walk in the Master's Will. When pride goes, then you go and know Him.
20 · The Lesson of the New Moon

For two days the moon is hidden, and on the third it rises as a slender crescent. The world stands up to salute it, and Shiva wears it as the mark on his forehead. Wearing away its sixteen phases, its life is made worthwhile — lovely, and alone in this dark age. Its nectar-ray is beautiful; a fountain flows from it and waters the thirsty. Giving coolness, peace and contentment, it is a priceless jewel of calm union. It makes light in the darkness, and the partridge fixes its gaze on it and will not look away. By losing itself, it becomes a priceless gem.

By becoming humble and giving himself to devotion, the Gurmukh Dhru — the boy who would not let go until God came — won the sight of God. The Lover of His devotees came and met him, and gave honour to one the world called honourless. He set him free while he was still in this mortal world, and raised him to the fixed, unshakable seat in the sky. The moon, the sun and all the millions of gods circle round him in respect. The Vedas and the Puranas, the oldest holy books and the old holy stories, tell of it and make his glory plain. His state cannot be seen and cannot be reached; that story is beyond telling and beyond thought. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy shows you the One no eye can see.
