1 · Marks of the Gurmukh
guramukh hovai sādhasaṅg horat saṅg kusaṅg na rachai | guramukh panth suhelaṛā bārah panth na khechal khachai | guramukh varan avaran hoi raṅg suraṅg tambol parachai | guramukh darasan dekhaṇā chhia darasan parasaṇ na sarachai | guramukh nihachal mat hai dūjai bhāi lubhāi na pachai | guramukh sabad kamāvaṇā pairī pai raharās na hachai | guramukh bhāi bhagat chahamachai |1|
The Gurmukh keeps to the sangat, the holy company, and mixes in no other, worse company. The Gurmukh's path is easy, and it does not wear itself out on the twelve schools of the yogis. Rising above caste and past caste altogether, he takes on the fast red of the chewed betel leaf, the colour that makes every mouth the same. The Gurmukh sees the one Sight, and feels no itch to sample the six schools of philosophy. The Gurmukh's wisdom cannot be shaken, and he does not burn in the pull of seeing two where there is only One. The Gurmukh lives the Word; falling at the Guru's feet, his devotion never fails. The Gurmukh brims over with loving devotion.
2 · One Worship, One Mind
guramukh ik arādhaṇā ik man hoi na hoi duchitā | guramukh āp gavāiā jīvan mukat na tāmas pitā | gur upades aves kar saṇ dūtā vikhaṛā gaṛ jitā | pairī pai pā khāk hoi pāhunaṛā jag hoi athitā | guramukh sevā gurasikhā gurasikh mā piu bhāī mitā | duramat dubidhā dūr kar guramat sabad surat man sitā | chhaḍ kuphakaṛ kūṛ kudhitā |2|
The Gurmukh worships the One with a single mind, and is never in two minds. The Gurmukh loses himself and is free while still alive, with no fire of anger in him. Taking the Guru's teaching to heart, he wins the hard fort and all the thieves inside it. Fall at the feet, become the dust of the feet, a guest and a traveller in this world. The Gurmukh serves the Gursikhs, for the Gursikhs are his mother, his father, his brother and his friend. He puts bad thinking and doubt far away, and by the Guru's wisdom his mind is stitched to the Word. Throw off boasting, lying and low behaviour.
3 · Each to Their Own — the Gursikhs to the Sangat
apaṇe apaṇe varan vich chār varan kul dharam dharande | chhia darasan chhia sāsatrā gur guramat khaṭ karam karande | apaṇe apaṇe sāhibai chākar jāi juhār juṛande | apaṇe apaṇe vaṇaj vich vāpārī vāpār machande | apaṇe apaṇe khet vich bīu sabhai kirasāṇ bījande | kārīgar kārīgarā kārikhāne vich jāi milande | sādhasaṅgat gurasikh pujande |3|
Each caste keeps to its own, and the four castes hold to their family duties. There are six schools of philosophy and six old books of law, and by the Guru's wisdom the six daily rites are done. Every servant goes to salute his own master. Every trader does brisk business in his own trade. Every farmer sows the seed in his own field. Craftsman meets craftsman in the workshop. And so the Gursikhs come together in the sangat.
4 · Birds of a Feather
amalī rachan amalīā sophī sophī mel karande | jūārī jūārīā vekaramī vekaram rachande | chorā chorā pirahaṛī ṭhag ṭhag mil des ṭhagande | masakariā mil masakare chugalā chugal umāh milande | manatārū manatārūān tārū tārū tār tarande | dukhiāre dukhiāriān mil mil apaṇe dukh ruvande | sādhasaṅgat gurasikh vasande |4|
Addicts join up with addicts, and those who stay clear meet others who stay clear. Gamblers go with gamblers, and wrongdoers are lost in their wrongdoing. Thieves love thieves, and cheats find cheats to cheat the country with. Jokers gather with jokers, and gossips are glad to meet other gossips. Swimmers cross the water together with swimmers. Those who are suffering meet others who suffer, and weeping, count over their sorrows. And so the Gursikh lives in the sangat.
5 · The World's Callings, and the Gurmukh

One is called a scholar, an astrologer, a teacher, a doctor. One is called king or chief, another headman or landowner. One is a cloth-seller, one a banker, one a jeweller who sets the gems. There are grocers and street-sellers, and some who earn by dealing and hard work. There are a hundred thousand castes and sub-castes, each named for its trade and its work. But joining the sangat, the Gursikh lives wanting nothing in the middle of all this wanting. Mind held in the Word, he is shown the One no eye can see.
6 · All Sunk in Pride — the Gurmukh Rejoices
jatī satī chir jīvaṇe sādhik sidh nāth gur chele | devī dev rikhīsurā bhairau khetrapāl bahu mele | gaṇ gandharab apachharā kinnar jachh chalit bahu khele | rākhas dānon dait lakh andar dūjā bhāu duhele | haumai andar sabh ko guramukh sādhasaṅgat ras kele | ik man ik arādhaṇā guramat āp gavāi suhele | chalaṇ jāṇ pae sir tele |6|
Men who keep celibate and women who keep chaste, the long-lived, the seekers, the masters of miracle powers, teachers and students; goddesses and gods, the great sages, Bhairav and the guardian spirits of the fields in crowds; hosts of ghosts, heavenly singers and dancers, and every kind of spirit at their play; countless demons and giants, miserable inside because they see two where there is One. Every one of them is sunk in pride. Only the Gurmukh delights in the sweetness of the sangat. Single-minded, worshipping the One, by the Guru's wisdom he loses himself and rests at ease. Knowing he must go one day, he keeps the oil ready on his head, always prepared.
7 · Rituals Without the Word Find No Place

Celibacy, truth, hard discipline, sacrifices, chanting, penance, giving and endless charity; miracle powers, hidden treasures and plenty of show; books of magic, magic words and endless displays; the worship of ghosts and witches, of graves and burning-grounds, and many wonders; breathing exercises and the yogic cleansings, the coiled power woken at the base of the spine; many sitting postures and forced holdings-back, a hundred thousand tricks to look at; the stone that turns iron into gold, the wishing-jewel, the life-giving medicine — every miracle is only soot in the dark; worship, fasting and the breaking of fasts, and the blessings and curses of Shiva and his power. Without the sangat and the Guru's Word, even the very best of these find no place. A lie is one knot tied over a hundred times.
8 · Omens, and the Gurmukh's Crossing

Puzzling over omens and signs, the nine planets and the twelve houses of the zodiac; charms, spells and drawn diagrams, and listening for chance words as if they foretold the future; the donkey, the dog and the cat, the kite, the jackal and its howl; a man or a woman met on the road, water and fire, a sneeze, a gust of wind, a hiccup, all taken as signs; lucky days and unlucky ones, bad hours, doubt, and the spirit said to guard the wrong direction — this is the world's great worry. With a hundred thousand tricks and blind beliefs, and many husbands besides, how will the bride ever enjoy her Lord? The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the crossing to the far shore.
9 · The Purity of the Gurmukh Path

Streams, brooks and channels meet the Ganga, and become Ganga water. Eight different metals become one metal: touched by the stone that turns iron into gold, they all turn to gold. The scent of the sandal tree turns every tree around it, fruitful or fruitless, into sandal. There are six seasons and twelve months, and yet only one sun is seen, never a second. Four castes, six schools, twelve yogi paths — and the whole world wandering among them. The Gurmukh's seeing is the sangat, and on the Gurmukh's path doubt is lost. With a single mind, they worship the One.
10 · Family Custom, and the Gurmukh Path
nānak dādak sāhurai viratīsur lagāit hoe | jammaṇ bhadaṇ maṅgaṇai maraṇai paraṇe karade ḍhoe | rītī rūṛī kul dharam chaj achār vīchār vikhoe | kar karatūt kusūt vich pāi dulīche gaiṇ chandoe | jodh jaṭhere mannīan satīān saut ṭobhaṛī ṭoe | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad viṇ mar mar jamman daī vigoe | guramukh hīre hār paroe |10|
At the mother's house, the father's, the in-laws', people get stuck fast in the old family rites. Birth, the first haircut, betrothal, death and marriage — they carry their offerings to each one. Custom, convention and family duty they show off as good conduct and deep thought. They do crooked things, and spread out carpets and canopies to be seen doing them. They give honour to dead warriors and elders, to widows who burned, to co-wives, to ponds and pits. Without the sangat and the Guru's Word, they die and are born again, and are ruined. The Gurmukh strings the diamonds into a necklace.
11 · The Prince in the Camp
lasakar andar lāḍule pātisāhā jāe sāhajāde | pātisāh agai chaṛan pichhai sabh umarāu piāde | baṇ baṇ āvaṇ tāiphe oi sahajāde sād murāde | khijamatigār vaḍīrīan daragah hon khuār kuvāde | aggai ḍhoī se lahan sevā andar kār kusāde | pātisāhān pātisāhu se guramukh varatai gur parasāde | sāh suhele ād jugāde |11|
In the army the princes are the beloved ones, the sons born to kings. They ride ahead of the king, and behind them all the nobles go on foot. Troupes come dressed up to entertain them, and those princes are content and satisfied. Good attendants are honoured, and the rude ones are disgraced at court. Those in favour receive the gifts, and are given open, easy work. The King of kings — that is what the Gurmukhs are like, living by the Guru's grace. God's own bankers are at ease, and have been since the ages began.
12 · The Star, the Lion, the Hawk
tāre lakh anher vich chaṛhiai sujh na sujhai koī | sīh buke miragāvalī bhannī jāi na āi khaṛoī | bisīar garaṛai ḍiṭhiā khuḍī vaṛide lakh paloī | paṅkherū sāhabāj dekh ḍhuk na haṅghan milai na ḍhoī | chār vīchār sansār vich sādhasaṅgat mil duramat khoī | satigur sachā pātisāhu dubidhā mār mavāsā goī | guramukh jātā jāṇ jaṇoī |12|
A hundred thousand stars in the dark — and when the sun rises, not one of them is seen. The lion roars, and the herds of deer scatter and cannot come and stand. Seeing the eagle, snakes by the hundred thousand run and hide in their holes. Seeing the hawk, the birds cannot come near, and find nowhere to shelter. Good thinking is in the world; join the sangat, and bad thinking is lost. The True Guru, the true emperor, kills the seeing of two and destroys the rebel. The Gurmukh knows the Knower who lets Himself be known.
13 · The Broad Road of the Gurmukh
satigur sachā pātisāhu guramukh gāḍī rāhu chalāiā | pañj dūt kar bhūt vas duramat dūjā bhāu miṭāiā | sabad surat liv chalaṇā jam jāgātī neṛ na āiā | bemukh bārah vāṭ kar sādhasaṅgat sach khaṇḍ vasāiā | bhāu bhagat bhau mantr de nām dān isanān driṛāiā | jiu jal andar kamal hai māiā vich udās rahāiā | āp gavāi na āp gaṇāiā |13|
The True Guru, the true emperor, has laid out the broad road for the Gurmukh. Taking the five thieves and the ghosts prisoner, he wipes out bad thinking and the seeing of two. Walking with his mind in the Word, he is never approached by Death the tax-collector. He leaves the faithless to wander the twelve paths, while he lives in the sangat, in the land of Truth. He gives love, devotion and awe as the sacred word, and makes firm the Name, the giving and the clean living. As the lotus sits in the water and stays dry, so he stays free in the middle of maya, the world's glitter. He loses himself, and never counts himself.
14 · The True Song of Joy
rājā parajā hoi kai chākar kūkar des duhāī | jammadiā ruṇijhuñjhaṇā nānak dādak hoi vadhāī | vīvāhā no siṭhaṇīā duhī valī duh tūr vajāī | rovaṇ piṭaṇ muiā no vaiṇ alāhaṇ dhum dhumāī | sādhasaṅgat sach sohilā guramukh sādhasaṅgat liv lāī | bed katebahu bāharā jammaṇ maraṇ alipat rahāī | āsā vich nirās valāī |14|
King or subject, servant or dog, they cry their claims all through the land. At a birth there are songs of joy, and the gladness of mother and father. At a wedding there are teasing songs, and both sides sound their trumpets. At a death there is weeping and wailing, and the mourning songs go up in a din. In the sangat is the true song of joy, and the Gurmukh fixes his love there. Past the Vedas and the scriptures, he stays free of birth and death. In the middle of desire, he lives wanting nothing.
15 · Gurmukh and Manmukh
guramukh panth suhelaṛā manamukh bārah vāṭ phirande | guramukh pār laṅghāidā manamukh bhavajal vich ḍubande | guramukh jīvan mukat kar manamukh phir phir janam marande | guramukh sukh phal pāide manamukh dukh phal dukh lahande | guramukh daragah surakh rū manamukh jam pur ḍaṇḍ sahande | guramukh āp gavāiā manamukh haumai agan jalande | bandī andar virale bande |15|
The Gurmukh's path is easy; the manmukh, who follows only his own mind, wanders the twelve paths. The Gurmukh is carried across; the manmukh drowns in the ocean of fear. The Gurmukh is free while still alive; the manmukh dies and is born again and again. The Gurmukh gains the fruit of joy; the manmukh harvests sorrow on sorrow. The Gurmukh's face shines in the Court; the manmukh takes the rod in the city of Death. The Gurmukh loses himself; the manmukh burns in the fire of pride. True servants are rare in this prison of the body.
16 · The Gursikh as the True Bride

In her parents' home she is cherished, dear to her mother and father. Among the brothers she is the sister, of her mother's and her father's families. She is married with a hundred thousand spent, with jewellery and dowry — a very heavy business. In her husband's home she is honoured, and she lifts up both families. She enjoys the bed with her lord, always beautifully dressed, with every dish set before her. In the world's learning, in goodness and in knowledge, she is half of his very body, and she reaches the door of freedom. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the faithful bride, sure and certain.
17 · The Manmukh as the Faithless One

The woman who goes with many men does every unlucky, sinful thing — thrown out by her people and her land, staining all three families; drowned herself, she drowns others, swallowing sweet poison; she is the hunter's horn to the deer, the lamp that burns the moth; her face is grey in both worlds, a stone boat that sinks the people riding in it. That is the manmukh's mind: broken into eight pieces, led astray in bad company. The faithless one's child is called fatherless.

A child's mind has no sense in it, and childhood goes by in play. In full youth a person is led astray, pulled by other people's bodies, by money and by gossip. Grown old and tangled in worries, he is caught in the great net of family. Strength gone, sense gone, at seventy-two he babbles. Blind, deaf, crippled, the body used up — and still the mind runs off in ten directions. Without the sangat and the Guru's Word, he wanders through millions upon millions of births. The moment once lost never comes back to hand.

The swan never leaves Lake Mansarovar; the crane keeps coming back to one muddy pond after another. The cuckoo sings in the mango grove; the crow finds every filthy place pleasant. Dogs never make a herd; the cow gives milk, and her line grows. The tree that bears fruit keeps a steady mind; the man who bears none runs off in ten directions. Fire is hot and water is cool; a head held high or a head bowed low — each one shows what it is. The Gurmukh loses himself; the foolish manmukh keeps counting himself. False love is the losing throw of the dice, and it is beaten.

The elephant, the deer, the fish, the moth and the bee — each one is destroyed by a single craving. The human body carries all five of those sicknesses, and the five thieves do their mischief there. Hope and craving, that old witch, joy and grief, and many diseases grow in it. The manmukh, tied to seeing two, wanders about taking knocks. The True Guru is the true emperor, and the Gurmukhs walk on his broad road. Joining the sangat they walk together, and the cheats and thieves run away afraid. Taking their profit, they settle in their own true home.

The boatman climbs aboard and carries boatload after boatload of people across. One guide sees it through — the king, the ruler with his army. One watchman goes round the palace so that the great can sleep without a care. One bridegroom is married, and the many wedding-guests are the honoured ones. One emperor rules a land, and the rest are his people, Hindu and Muslim alike. The True Guru is the true emperor, and the sangat and the Guru's Word are his banner. I give myself to those who lean on the True Guru.
