Chapter 10

Var 10 · The Garland of Devotees

The Bhagat Mala — twenty-three stories of God's lovers, from Dhru and Prahlad to Namdev, Kabir, Ravidas and Dhanna, each showing the one truth: the Lord cherishes his devotees and saves even the fallen.

1 · Dhru

dhrū hasadā ghar āiā kar piār piu kuchhaṛ lītā | bāhahu pakaṛ uṭhāliā man vich ros matreī kītā | ḍuḍahulikā mān puchhai tūn sāvāṇī hai ki surītā? sāvāṇī hān janam dī nām na bhagatī karam driṛhītā | kis udam te rāj mil satrū te sabh hovan mītā? | paramesar ārādhīai jidū hoīai patit punītā | bāhar chaliā karaṇ tap man bairāgī hoi atītā | nārad mun upadesiā nām nidhān amio ras pītā | pichhahu rāje sadiā abichal rāj karahu nit nītā | hār chale guramukh jag jītā |1|

Dhru came home laughing, and his father lovingly took him on his lap. His stepmother, full of resentment, pulled him off by the arm. Shaken, he asked his mother, 'Are you a queen or a servant?' 'A servant by birth — I never held firm to the Name or to devotion.' 'By what effort is a kingdom won, and all enemies turned into friends?' 'By worshipping the Highest One, through whom the fallen are made pure.' He went out to do penance, his mind loosed from the world. The sage Narad taught him, and he drank the nectar-treasure of the Name. Afterwards the king called him back to rule, unshaken, forever. Having lost the world, the Gurmukh won the world.

2 · Prahlad

ghar haraṇākhas dait de kalar kaval bhagat prahilād | paṛhan paṭhāiā chāṭasāl pāndhe chit hoā ahilād | simarai man vich rām nām gāvai sabad anāhad nād | bhagat karan sabh chāṭaṛai pāndhe hoi rahe visamād | rāje pās rūāiā dokhī dait vadhāiā vād | jal aganī vich ghatiā jalai na ḍubai gur parasād | kaḍh khaṛag sad puchhiā kauṇ su terā hai usatād | thammhu pāṛ paragaṭiā narasiṅgh rūp anūp anād | bemukh pakaṛ pachhāṛian sant sahāī ād jugād | jai jai kār karan brahamād |2|

In the house of the demon Harnakhash — a lotus in barren soil — was the devotee Prahlad. Sent to school, he pleased his teacher at first. But he remembered God's Name in his heart and sang the melody no one plays. All the schoolboys took up devotion, and the teachers stood there amazed. A complaint was carried to the king, and the wicked demon swelled the quarrel. Thrown into water and into fire, the boy neither drowned nor burned, by the Guru's grace. Drawing his sword, the king called him and asked, 'Who is this teacher of yours?' Bursting out of the pillar, God appeared as Narsingh, the man-lion — matchless, and without beginning. Seizing the faithless one, he cast him down: he has been the helper of saints since the ages began. Brahma and the gods cried, 'Victory, victory!'

3 · King Bal

bal rājā ghar āpaṇai andar baiṭhā jag karāvai | bāvan rūpī āiā chār ved mukh pāṭh suṇāvai | rāje andar sadiā maṅg suāmī jo tudh bhāvai | achhal chhalaṇ tudh āiā sukr purohit kah samajhāvai | karau aḍhāī dharat maṅg pichhahu de trihu loa na māvai | dui karavān kar tinn loa bal rājā lai magar miṇāvai | bal chhal āp chhalāian hoi daiāl milai gal lāvai | ditā rāj patāl dā hoi adhīn bhagat jas gāvai | hoi daravān mahān sukh pāvai |3|

King Bal sat in his house, having a great sacrifice performed. The Lord came in the form of a dwarf, reciting the four Vedas aloud. The king called him in: 'Ask, master, for whatever pleases you.' The priest Shukra warned, 'The One who cannot be fooled has come to fool you.' 'I ask for two and a half steps of land' — and then the three worlds behind could not contain Him. In two strides He took the three worlds, and had Bal measure out the rest on his own back. He outwitted Bal, and then let Himself be won by Bal's love, and mercifully embraced him. He gave him the kingdom of the world below; humbled, Bal sang His praise in devotion. Becoming His doorkeeper, he found the greatest bliss.

4 · Ambrik

ambarīk muh varat hai rāt paī durabāsā āiā | bhīṛā os upāraṇā ohu uṭh nhāvaṇ nadī sidhāiā | charaṇodak lai pokhiā ohu sarāp deṇ no dhāiā | chakr sudarasan kāl rūp hoi bhīhāval garab gavāiā | bāmhaṇ bhannā jīu lai rakh na haṅghan dev sabāiā | indrr lok siv lok taj braham lok baikuṇṭh tajāiā | devatiān bhagavān saṇ sikh dei sabhanān samajhāiā | āi paiā saraṇāgatī mārīdā ambarīk chhuḍāiā | bhagat vachhal jag birad sadāiā |4|

Ambrik was keeping his fast when, at night, the sage Durbasa came. The test was whether he would break his fast; but the sage got up and went to bathe in the river. Ambrik took the water that had washed the Lord's feet to end his fast — and Durbasa rushed to curse him. The Lord's flying discus, in the form of Death, terrifying, humbled the sage's pride. The brahmin fled for his life, and not one of all the gods could shelter him. He left Indra's heaven and Shiva's heaven, and was made to leave Brahma's heaven and the sky itself. The Lord, with a Sikh's own counsel, made all the gods understand. Coming at last to take shelter, the sage was saved — Ambrik set him free. So the Lord earned in the world His name: the Lover of His devotees.

5 · King Janak

bhagat vaḍā rājā janak hai guramukh māiā vich udāsī | dev lok no chaliā gaṇ gandharab sabhā sukhavāsī | jamapur gaiā pukār suṇ vilalāvan jīa narak nivāsī | dharamarāi no ākhion sabhanā dī kar band khalāsī | kare benatī dharamarāi hau sevak ṭhākur abināsī | gahiṇe dharion ik nāu pāpā nāl karai nirajāsī | pāsaṅg pāp na pujanī guramukh nāu atul na tulāsī | narakahu chhuṭe jīa jant kaṭī galahun silak jam phāsī | mukat jugat nāvai dī dāsī |5|

King Janak was a great devotee, a Gurmukh who stayed free in the middle of maya. He set out for the world of the gods, where the heavenly singers live in bliss. Passing the city of Death, he heard the cry of the souls wailing in hell. He said to the Judge of the dead, 'Set them all free from their chains.' The Judge pleaded, 'I am only a servant; the Lord is the one who never dies.' He offered the one Name as a pledge, weighed against all their sins. The weight of sin could not match it — the Gurmukh's Name is past all weighing. The souls were freed from hell, and Death's noose was cut from their necks. The way of freedom is the servant of the Name.

6 · Harichand and Tara Rani

sukh rāje harīchand ghar nār su tārā lochan rāṇī | sādhasaṅgat mil gāvade rātī jāi suṇai gurabāṇī | pichhai rājā jāgiā adhī rāt nikhaṇḍ vihāṇī | rāṇī dis na āvaī man vich varat gaī hairāṇī | horat rātī uṭh kai chaliā pichhai taral juāṇī | rāṇī pahutī saṅgatī rāje khaṛī khaṛāu nīsāṇī | sādhasaṅgat ārādhiā joṛī juṛī khaṛāu purāṇī | rāje ḍiṭhā chalit ihu eh khaṛāv hai choj viḍāṇī | sādhasaṅgat viṭahu kurabāṇī |6|

In King Harichand's house there was joy, and his wife was the lovely-eyed queen Tara. She would go by night to join the sangat and hear Gurbani sung. One night the king woke at midnight and found half the night gone. The queen was nowhere to be seen, and wonder filled his mind. Another night he rose and followed after the restless young queen. The queen reached the sangat; the king stood watching, and her wooden sandals were the only sign. In the sangat she worshipped, and the old worn sandals were made into a matched, new pair. Seeing this marvel, the king knew it for a wonderful play. I give myself to the sangat.

7 · Bidar and Duryodhan

āiā suṇiā bidar de bolai durajodhan hoi rukhā | ghar asāḍe chhaḍ kai gole de ghar jāh ki sukhā | bhīkham doṇā karaṇ taj sabhā sīgār vaḍe mānukhā | jhuṅgī jāi valāion sabhanā de jīa andar dhukhā | has bolai bhagavān jī suṇiho rājā hoi sanamukhā | tere bhāu na disaī mere nāhī apadā dukhā | bhāu jivehā bidar de horī de chit chāu na chukhā | gobind bhāu bhagat dā bhukhā |7|

When word came, Duryodhan spoke to Bidar harshly: 'Leaving our house, you go to a servant's home — what comfort is there for you?' Passing by Bhishma, Drona, Karna and all that grand gathering of great men, the Lord turned aside to Bidar's hut, and it burned in every heart. The Lord smiled and spoke: 'Listen, O king who came to me first — I do not see your love; in Bidar's there is no want and no sorrow. The love that is in Bidar — in the others there is not a scrap of that longing.' God hungers for the love of devotion.

8 · Draupadi

andar sabhā dusāsaṇai mathevāl dropatī āndī | dūtā no phuramāiā naṅgī karahu pañchālī bāndī | pañje pāṇḍo vekhade aughaṭ rudhī nār jinā dī | akhī mīṭ dhiān dhar hā hā krisan karai bilalāndī | kapaṛ koṭ usārion thake dūt na pār vasāndī | hath maroṛan sir dhuṇan pachhotān karan jāh jāndī | ghar āī ṭhākur mile paij rahī bole sharamāndī | nāth anāthān bāṇ dhurān dī |8|

In the court, Dusasan seized Draupadi by the hair and dragged her in. He ordered his men, 'Strip the queen of Panchal bare.' The five Pandav brothers looked on — she was their wife, and she was caught in this terrible moment. Closing her eyes and fixing her mind, she cried out 'Ha, ha, Krishna!' through her weeping. He raised a fortress of cloth around her; the men grew tired and could never reach its end. They wrung their hands and beat their heads, ashamed, and slunk away sorry. Come home, she met her Lord — her honour saved, and she spoke, embarrassed. To be the shelter of the shelterless has been His way from the beginning.

9 · Sudama

bip sudāmā dālidī bāl sakhāī mitrr sadāe | lāgū hoī bāmhaṇī mil jagadīs dalidrr gavāe | chaliā gaṇadā gaṭīān kiu kar jāīai kauṇ milāe | pahutā nagar duārakā siṅgh duār khalotā jāe | dūrahu dekh ḍaṇḍaut kar chhaḍ siṅghāsaṇ har jī āe | pahile de paradakhaṇā pairī pai ke lai gal lāe | charaṇodak lai pair dhoi siṅghāsaṇ ute baiṭhāe | puchhe kusal piār kar gur sevā dī kathā suṇāe | lai kai tandul chabion vidā kare agai pahuchāe | chār padārath sakuch paṭhāe |9|

Sudama the brahmin was poor, and was called the Lord's childhood friend. His wife pressed him: 'Go, meet the Lord of the world, and your poverty will end.' He set off counting the lanes: 'How shall I go? Who will bring me to Him?' He reached the city of Dwarka and stood at the great gate. Seeing him from far off, the Lord bowed, and left His throne to come to him. First He walked round him in respect, then fell at his feet and embraced him. He took the water from his feet, washed them, and seated him on the throne. He asked after him with love, and told the story of serving the Guru. Taking the parched rice, He ate it — and sent riches on ahead, giving him the four great treasures, humbly.

10 · Jaidev

prem bhagat jaideu kar gīt govind sahaj dhun gāvai | līlā chalit vakhāṇadā antarajāmī ṭhākur bhāvai | akhar ik na āvaṛai pusatak bannh sandhiā kar āvai | guṇ nidhān ghar āi kai bhagat rūp likh lekh baṇāvai | akhar paṛh paratīt kar hoi visamād na aṅg samāvai | vekhai jāi ujāṛ vich birakh ik ācharaj suhāvai | gīt govind sampūraṇo pat pat likhiā ant na pāvai | bhagat het paragās kar hoi daiāl milai gal lāvai | sant anant na bhed gaṇāvai |10|

In loving devotion Jaidev sang the Gita-Govind in a gentle melody. He told the play and the doings of the Lord, and it pleased the Master who knows every heart. One word he could not find, so he tied up the book and went to say his evening prayer. The Treasure of Virtues came to his house and, taking the devotee's own form, wrote the missing line. Reading the words, Jaidev was filled with faith, and his body could not hold the wonder. Going out into the wild, he saw a single tree, wonderful and lovely. The Gita-Govind was finished, every leaf of the tree written on, and no end to be found. For love of His devotee He shone out, and mercifully embraced him. Between a saint and the Endless One, no difference can be counted.

11 · Namdev

When his father went off on some errand, he told Namdev what to do. He said, 'Serve the Lord — give the image milk to drink,' and explained it. Namdev bathed, milked the brown cow, and brought the milk. He bathed the image, and touched the water from its feet to his forehead. With hands joined he prayed, 'Drink the milk, O Lord, O king Govind.' He worshipped with a faith that never wavered, and the Merciful One showed His face. Namdev took the brimming bowl and gave the Lord the milk to drink. He brought the dead cow back to life, and thatched Namdev's roof. He turned the temple around, and made the four castes fall at Namdev's feet. He does, and always has done, the work of His devotees.

12 · Namdev and Trilochan

To see the Lord's face, Trilochan rose at dawn and came to Namdev. The two did devotion together, and Namdev told of the Lord's wonderful play. 'Put in my request too — that I may see Him, if it pleases Him.' He asked the Lord, 'How can Trilochan gain your sight?' Smiling, the Lord spoke, and made Namdev understand: 'I can take no offering from your hand; being pleased with Trilochan, let him turn his face toward me. I am the servant of my devotees; I can never repay the claim of their devotion.' Becoming the go-between, Namdev brought them together.

A brahmin worshipped his images, and Dhanna came by, grazing his cows. Dhanna watched this and asked the brahmin, who explained it to him. 'Whoever serves the Lord gains whatever fruit he wishes.' Dhanna begged, 'Give me one too, if it pleases you.' Wrapping up a plain stone, the brahmin gave it to Dhanna to be rid of him. Dhanna bathed the stone and offered it buttermilk and bread. With hands joined he begged, falling at its feet again and again to win it over. 'I will not touch food to my mouth either; if you are unhappy, nothing gives me joy.' Then the Lord of the earth appeared in person, ate the bread and put the buttermilk to His lips. Simple, honest love joins a person to God.

The Gurmukh Beni did his devotion, sitting alone, lost in love. He did his inward work, and showed what he had seen to no one else. When they asked at home, he would say he had gone to serve at the king's court. At home the goods were demanded of him, and with excuses he passed the days. He kept up a great pretence, while single-mindedly he meditated on the Highest One. The Lord saved His devotee's honour: taking the form of a king, He came to his house. Well pleased, He gave His word and sent riches beyond counting on ahead. Then He came to His devotee, and mercifully kindled love in him. He makes His devotees' victory ring out.

Living free of the world in Banaras was Ramanand the master. Rising in the still hour before dawn, he would go to bathe in the Ganga. Going on ahead of him, Kabir lay down full-length across his path. Nudging him with his foot, Ramanand raised him and taught him: 'Say Ram!' As iron touched by the gold-making stone turns to gold, as sandal makes even the bitter nim tree fragrant; as a beast or a ghost is made into a god — such is the glory of the perfect True Guru. Wonder met wonder, and marvel merged into marvel. As a fountain flows from its spring, so Gurbani gives shape to the shapeless. Between Ram and Kabir there is no difference, my brother.

Hearing of Kabir's glory, the second Sikh was Sain the barber. All night he did loving devotion; at dawn he went to serve at the king's court. Once holy guests came, and kirtan went on the whole night through. He could not leave the holy ones, and he could not do his service at the court. So the Lord went in Sain's own form, and gladdened the king. After seeing the holy ones off, Sain went to the court, ashamed. The king called him from far off, and with his own hand dressed him in a fine gown: 'You have won me over today,' the king said, for everyone to hear. He makes the greatness of devotion plain to see.

'A devotee, a true devotee!' rang out in the world — a cobbler known in all four directions. He mended shoes by the road, kept up his family's work, and cleared away the dead cattle. As a priceless diamond, a ruby, is wrapped in dirty rags, so was he. He taught the four castes, gathering them in wisdom, meditation and devotion. The sangat came to bathe, making a Ganga shrine at Banaras. Drawing out his little shell coin, he offered it to the Ganga. On the festival day a wonderful marvel was seen, one that cannot be rubbed out: the Ganga stretched out a hand and took the coin — as one thread is woven into another. To His devotees the Lord is mother, father and child.

Gotam's wife was Ahalya, and seeing her, Indra was seized with lust. Going into another man's house, he took a curse for it, and repented, covered with a thousand marks. Indra's heaven was left empty; he hid in a lake, ashamed in his heart. The thousand marks became a thousand eyes, and so Indra went back to his city. Ahalya, fallen from her goodness, became a stone by the riverbank, lifeless. Touched by the feet of Ram, she rose to heaven in a heavenly chariot. The Lover of His devotees, out of pure goodness, lifts up the fallen who have sinned. Everyone gives back goodness for goodness; but to give back goodness for a wrong done — that is His alone. His state cannot be seen — how can I tell it in words?

19 · Balmik the Robber

On the road sat Balmik the robber, killing travellers. He met the perfect True Guru, and a tug-of-war rose up in his mind. He longed to kill, but could not — his hand would not open to strike. The True Guru held his mind, and no violence came. He laid all his faults out plainly: 'This is how I make my living.' He was sent home to ask, 'At the last hour, is there anyone here who is mine?' — and his whole family, though they shared everything he brought, said none of them would go with him or carry his burden. Making him hold firm to Truth, the Guru saved him, and he leapt free over the wall of his crimes. The Gurmukh crossed over the mountain of his sins.

20 · Ajamal

The fallen Ajamal did wrong, and went and lived with a dancing-girl. Turned away from the Guru, he did evil, scorched by his own bad thinking. He wasted his birth for nothing, drifting on the ocean of fear. The woman bore six sons, and he took the fruit of his sins just as he had wished. A seventh son was born, and his heart welled up to give him a name. Going to the Guru's door, the Gurmukh named him 'Narayan', a name of God. At the last hour, seeing the messengers of Death, he called out 'Narayan!' — meaning his son. The messengers of Death were struck down by the Lord's servants; he went to heaven, and Death's rod could not touch him. Speaking that Name, his suffering and everything it lived in collapsed.

Ganika was a sinner, with a whole garland of sins strung round her neck. All at once a great soul came and stood at Ganika's door. Seeing her bad ways, out of mercy he gave her a parrot with his own hand. He taught it to say 'Ram's Name', and went on his way, his gift given, his trade done. Her love fixed itself on that parrot; day by day she taught it, restless with longing. The Name of Ram, who lifts up the fallen, washed her body clean of its sinful, bad thinking. At the last hour, Death's noose was cut, and she did not swallow the drowning-gulp of hell. She rose to heaven in a heavenly chariot — the Name is the medicine that makes even the untouchable pure. It is the honour of those with no honour, the place for those with no place.

The sinner Putna came in haste, with poison smeared on both her breasts. She came and sat among the family, pretending love, a washed and dressed-up new nurse. She took the child Govind on her lap and worked her fourfold sorcery, that deceiving woman. She put the Enchanter to her breast — and walked out swollen with pride. He stretched and lengthened His body upon her, that faithless, reckless woman. Laying the weight of the three worlds on her, He clung to her throat, and she was undone. Struck down like a falling mountain, she was flung out into the wild. And yet He made her the equal of His own mother, a companion.

He went and lay down at Prabhas, resting one foot on his knee. On the sole of that lotus-foot was a lotus mark, shimmering like a star. A hunter came searching, took it for a deer, drew his bow and struck. Coming up and seeing the Lord's own form, he wailed and cried out in grief. Krishna took him to His breast: 'You did a wrong, but the Lord does not hold it against you.' Mercifully He comforted him, remembering His own nature as the one who lifts up the fallen. Everyone counts the good as good; but the good who mend the wrongs of the wicked — He saves even the sinners who sin.
