1 · I Am a Sacrifice to the Gursikhs
balihārī tinhān gurasikhān jāi jinā gur darasan ḍiṭhā | balihārī tinhān gurasikkhān pairī pai gur sabhā bahiṭhā | balihārī tinhān gurasikkhān guramat bol bolade miṭhā | balihārī tinhān gurasikkhān putr mitr gurabhāī iṭhā | balihārī tinhān gurasikkhān gur sevā jāṇan abhiriṭhā | balihārī tinhān gurasikkhān āp tare tāren sariṭhā | gurasikh miliā pāp paṇiṭhā |1|
I give myself to those Gursikhs who have gone and seen the Guru's face. I give myself to those Gursikhs who fall at the feet and sit in the Guru's gathering. I give myself to those Gursikhs who, by the Guru's wisdom, speak sweet words. I give myself to those Gursikhs to whom their brother Sikhs are as dear as sons and friends. I give myself to those Gursikhs who know serving the Guru as their true food. I give myself to those Gursikhs who cross over themselves and carry creation across. Meet a Gursikh, and sin is heaped up and swept away.
2 · A Sacrifice to Their Daily Devotion

I give myself to those Gursikhs who rise and sit up in the last watch of the night. I give myself to those Gursikhs who bathe in the pool in the still hour before dawn. I give myself to those Gursikhs who, single-minded, recite the Guru's Jaap. I give myself to those Gursikhs who go and join the sangat. I give myself to those Gursikhs who sing and hear Gurbani every day. I give myself to those Gursikhs who, hearts meeting, are joined in fellowship. I give myself to those Gursikhs who, in love and devotion, keep the Guru's holy days. The fruit of serving the Guru ripens sweet and full.
3 · A Sacrifice to the Humble Heart

I give myself to the one who, having strength, becomes as one with no strength at all. I give myself to the one who, having honour, stays humble and unhonoured. I give myself to the one who throws off cleverness and becomes plain and simple. I give myself to the one who loves whatever pleases the Master. I give myself to the one who, seeing the Gurmukh's path, is drawn to it. I give myself to the one who, knowing he must go, lives like a guest passing through. Such a person is accepted in this world, in the next, and in the Court.
4 · A Sacrifice to the Pure-Living
hau tis ghol ghumāiā guramat ridai garībī āvai | hau tis ghol ghumāiā par nārī de neṛ na jāvai | hau tis ghol ghumāiā par darabai no hath na lāvai | hau tis ghol ghumāiā par nindā suṇ āp haṭāvai | hau tis ghol ghumāiā satigur dā upades kamāvai | hau tis ghol ghumāiā thoṛā savai thoṛā hī khāvai | guramukh soī sahaj samāvai |4|
I give myself completely to the one in whose heart, by the Guru's wisdom, humility comes. I give myself to the one who does not go near another man's wife. I give myself to the one who lays no hand on another's wealth. I give myself to the one who, hearing someone slandered, turns himself away. I give myself to the one who lives out the True Guru's teaching. I give myself to the one who sleeps little and eats little. Such a Gurmukh melts into calm ease.
5 · A Sacrifice to the Wise

I would be cut in four for the one who knows the Guru and God as one. I would be cut in four for the one who lets no love of anything else in. I would be cut in four for the one who, when wronged, still counts it a kindness. I would be cut in four for the one who calls nobody evil. I would be cut in four for the one who lets himself be cheated in the eyes of the world. I would be cut in four for the one who does good to others and enjoys the delight of it. In the Court of the Carefree One, the humble person is the honoured one. The perfect Guru knows him through the Guru's Word.
6 · A Sacrifice to the Self-Effaced
hau sadake tinhān gurasikhān satigur no mil āp gavāiā | hau sadake tinhān gurasikhān karan udāsī andar māiā | hau sadake tinhān gurasikhān guramit gur charaṇī chit lāiā | hau sadake tinhān gurasikhān gur sikh de gurasikh milāiā | hau sadake tinhān gurasikhān bāhir jāndā varaj rahāiā | hau sadake tinhān gurasikhān āsā vich nirās valāiā | satigur dā upades diṛhāiā |6|
I give myself to those Gursikhs who, meeting the True Guru, lost themselves. I give myself to those Gursikhs who stay free in the middle of maya, the world's glitter. I give myself to those Gursikhs who, by the Guru's wisdom, fix their minds on the Guru's feet. I give myself to those Gursikhs who, being Gursikhs, join others to the Guru. I give myself to those Gursikhs who stop the mind from running loose. I give myself to those Gursikhs who live wanting nothing in the middle of wanting. They make the True Guru's teaching firm.
7 · Brahma's Pride

Brahma was called great, born from the lotus that grew from Vishnu's navel. Through ages of coming and going he searched, and in the end was left amazed. He tried to find where it ended, and, making a show of himself, was lost in his own confusion. Four-faced, reciting the four Vedas, he made himself out to be the wisest of all. He taught the people — and then, seeing the beauty of Saraswati, he was seized with lust. He lost the four Vedas, and repented his pride and arrogance. The untold story is 'not this, not this' — past all telling.
8 · The Ten Times God Came Down

Vishnu came down to earth ten times, killing warriors in enmity and strife. Fish, tortoise and boar, then Narsingh the man-lion, and Vaman the dwarf; Parsuram, Ram, then Krishna, and the roaring Kalki, full of great pride. Twenty-one times he destroyed the warrior caste, and made the Ramayan and the mighty Mahabharat. And yet he did not master lust and anger, nor kill greed, clinging and pride. He did not meet the True Guru-Being, nor keep the company of the sangat. In pride he did deeds that turned into vice.
9 · Shiva the Ascetic

Mahadev became a wandering holy man, but caught in darkness he did not know true yoga. Bhairav among the spirits, the field-guardian and the ghoul in their wild ways. Eating the bitter milkweed and the thorn-apple, spending his nights in graves and burning-grounds. Wearing the skin of the elephant and the lion, sounding his drum to astound people. He was called the master of masters, and yet, never becoming humble, he did not enjoy the Lord's delight. In his darkness he destroys creation, knowing neither yoga, nor joy, nor the way. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is in the company of the holy.
10 · The Fleeting Gods

Indra lives a great long life, ruling in the city of Indra. Yet fourteen Indras die in the space of a single day of Brahma. Brahma dies in the middle of his business, while only one hair of the sage Lomas wears away. Shesh the great serpent and Mahesh are told of, long-lived, and yet no peace comes to them. Much yoga, much enjoyment, chanting and penance — and still the world's learning and remembrance do not bless them. Counting yourself, you never melt into calm ease.
11 · Narad and the Sages
nārad munī akhāidā āgam jāṇ na dhīraj āṇai | suṇ suṇ masalat majalasai kar kar chugalī ākh vakhāṇai | bāl budh sanakādikā bāl subhāu naviratī hāṇai | jāi baikuṇṭh karodh kar dei sarāp jai bijai dhiṅāṇai | ahammeu sukadeu kar garabh vās haumai hairāṇai | chand sūraj aulaṅg bharai udai asat vich āvaṇ jāṇai | siv sakatī vich garab gumāṇai |11|
Narad is called a sage, and yet, knowing the scriptures, he keeps no patience. Hearing counsel in the assembly, he goes about carrying tales. Childlike in wisdom, the Sanak sages keep a childish nature, still tied to the world. Going to heaven in anger, he curses Jai and Vijai wrongly. Full of pride, Sukdev, astonished at his own greatness, stayed in the womb. The moon and the sun keep waning and waxing, rising and setting, coming and going. In Shiva and his power they are lost in pride and conceit.
12 · Celibates, Masters and the Six Schools

Men who kept celibate, women who kept chaste, the contented — they never knew the real way of self-control and contentment. The masters of miracle powers and the Nath yogis made many paths, doing their marvels in pride. The four castes in the world rub against each other and die, lost in doubt. The six schools of philosophy spread out, and the twelve yogi sects wander like distracted classmates. The Gurmukh, rising above caste and past caste, takes the fast red of the betel leaf. Through six seasons and twelve months, the Gurmukh's sight sees clearly. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the love of the Beloved.
13 · The Earth and the Tree

Shaping the five elements, the earth becomes a house of worship, pleasing to the mind. He set the earth on the water, and held the water inside the earth. Head bowed down, the tree stands unshakable, its mind at rest in the wilderness. Doing good to others, loaded with fruit, it rains its harvest on the world when it is struck. The sandal's fragrance turns the trees into sandal, spreading its scent. Mind in the Word in the sangat, the Gurmukh's fruit of joy is nectar-speech. Its state is hidden, and its story is past all telling.
14 · The Devotee-Kings

Dhru, Prahlad, Bhabhikhan, Ambrik, Bal and Janak are told of. Royal princes, of kingly rank, bound by their hopes, they did wonderful deeds. Dhru was struck by his stepmother; Prahlad's father seized and tormented him. Bhabhikhan carried the secret of Lanka; Ambrik was saved by the flying discus. Janak's feet were set in the boiling cauldron, and honest goodness worked against pretence. Count yourself, and you come to ruin; the humble one finds honour in the Court. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is honour, accepted.
15 · The Lowly Devotees

In the dark age Namdev the devotee arose, turned the temple round and gave the cow its life. Kabir the devotee is told of, who rose up out of prison. Dhanna the Jat was saved, and Sadhna, of the low butcher's caste. The servant Ravidas, a cobbler, was made great among all four castes. Beni became one who knew the Self; Sain, of a low family, was a barber. Falling at the feet, becoming the dust of the feet, they were merged greatly among the Gursikhs. They showed the unseen, and never made a show of it.
16 · The Excellence of the Dark Age

The age of truth is called the highest — and yet one man's wrong made the whole land suffer. In the second age a city was ground down; in the third a whole clan was destroyed before its time. But in the dark age there is real justice: whoever sows, he alone harvests. The Highest One, the perfect Brahm — mind in the Word, the True Guru and his disciple. Making firm the Name, the giving and the clean living, meeting the sangat in the still hour before dawn. Sweet speech, humble walking, giving with the hand, at ease in calm grace. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is a love that is always new.

The Formless One made form, and showed the matchless One, made of light. Past the Vedas and the scriptures, beyond reach — Waheguru, the Guru's Word, is made heard. The four castes and the four creeds came to the shelter of the lotus feet. Touching the gold-making stone, this untouched world — eight metals were made into one metal. Falling at the feet, bowing low, the incurable disease of pride is wiped away. Walking in the Will and the Command, the Gurmukh laid the broad road. The Perfect One made a perfect design.

Past birth and death, the doers of good come into the world. Giving the teaching of love and devotion, they settle the sangat in the land of Truth. Highest swans at Lake Mansarovar, the Gurmukhs fix their minds in the Word. As the sandal's fragrance turns the fruitless and the fruitful trees into sandal, so, in the ship on the ocean of fear, they carry their whole family across. No wave and no surge touches them; in the middle of maya they stay free. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy melts into calm ease.

Blessed is the Guru, and blessed the Gursikh — they bow to the First Being. Blessed is the sight of the True Guru; blessed the gaze that fixes the mind on the Guru's meditation. Blessed, blessed is the True Guru's Word; blessed the mind that hears the Guru's wisdom. Blessed, blessed the lotus feet of the Guru; blessed the forehead laid at those feet. Blessed, blessed is the Guru's teaching; blessed the heart in which the Guru's sacred word lives. Blessed, blessed the water that washed the Guru's feet; blessed the moment it is given to drink. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy carries what cannot be carried.

The sangat is the ocean of peace, its waves and its glory past all measure. Gems, pearls and diamonds are the Guru's teaching, priceless and stirring. Jewel-melodies, and the sound no one plays; mind in the Word, beyond reach, never wavering. Riches, powers and treasures are all its servants, and the four great gifts graze in its pasture. A hundred thousand moons are its lamps; a hundred thousand drink its nectar in deep draughts. A hundred thousand wish-granting cows and wish-granting trees graze quietly in its forest. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the word beyond words.
