Chapter 13

Var 13 · The Relish of Love

The Gurmukh's love is a sweetness beyond all telling — like a mute tasting honey — richer than every fragrance, beauty and treasure of the world, closing on the light passing through the first six Gurus.

1 · Guru and Disciple

pīr murīdī gākhaṛī ko viralā jāṇai | pīrā pīr vakhāṇīai gur gurān vakhāṇai | gur chelā chelā gurū kar choj viḍāṇai | so gur soī sikh hai jotī jot samāṇai | ik gur ik sikh hai gur sabad siñāṇai | mihar muhabat mel kar bhau bhāu su bhāṇai |1|

Being a disciple of a spiritual master is a hard thing — rare is the one who understands it. He is called the Master of masters, the Guru of gurus. Guru becomes disciple and disciple Guru, in a wonderful play. That Guru is the Sikh himself, light merged into Light. One Guru, one Sikh — and the Guru is known through the Word. Grace and love join them together — awe, love, and God's Will.

2 · From Master to Master

gur sikhahu gurasikh hai pīr pīrahu koī | sabad surat chelā gurū paramesar soī | darasan disaṭ dhiān dhar gur mūrat hoī | sabad surat kar kīratan satisaṅg viloī | vāhigurū gur mantr hai jap haumai khoī | āp gavāe āp hai guṇ guṇī paroī |2|

Out of the Guru's Sikh comes the Gursikh; and out of a master, now and then, another master. Mind in the Word, the disciple is the Guru, the Highest One himself. Fixing his gaze and his meditation on that face, he becomes the Guru's own image. Mind in the Word, doing kirtan, he is churned in the sangat. Waheguru is the Guru's sacred word; chanting it, pride is lost. Losing himself, he becomes the Self, goodness strung upon goodness.

3 · The Yogi of Yogis

darasan disaṭ sañjog hai bhai bhāi sañjogī | sabad surat bairāg hai sukh sahaj arogī | man bach karam na bharam hai jogīsar jogī | piram piālā pīvaṇā ammrit ras bhogī | giān dhiān simaraṇ milai pī apio asogī |3|

The sight and the gaze are the union; awe and love are what join them. Mind in the Word is freedom from clinging, in peace and calm health. Past thought, word and deed, past all doubt — the yogi of yogis. Drinking the cup of love, he enjoys its nectar-sweetness. Knowledge, meditation and remembrance meet; drinking what cannot be drunk, he is past all sorrow.

4 · The Relish Beyond Telling

guramukh sukh phal piram ras kiu ākh vakhāṇai | suṇ suṇ ākhaṇ ākhaṇā ohu sāu na jāṇai | brahamā bisan mahes mil kath ved purāṇai | chār katebān ākhīan dīn musalamāṇai | sekhanāg simaraṇ karai sāṅgīt suhāṇai | anahad nād asaṅkh suṇ hoe hairāṇai | akath kathā kar net net pīlāe bhāṇai |4|

The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the sweetness of love — how can it be told? They hear of it and hear of it, and speak of it, but they do not know its taste. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together told of it in the Veda and the old holy stories. The four scriptures are named, and the faith of the Muslim. Shesh, the great serpent, does his remembering in lovely song. Hearing countless melodies that no one plays, they are struck with wonder. Telling what cannot be told, 'not this, not this' — He gives it to drink as He wills.

5 · The Six Tastes Amazed

guramukh sukh phal piram ras chhia ras hairāṇā | chhatīh ammrit tarasade visamād viḍāṇā | nijhar dhār hajār hoi bhai chakit bhulāṇā | iṛā piṅgulā sukhamanā sohan na samāṇā | vīh ikīh chaṛāu chaṛ parachā paravāṇā | pītai bol na haṅghaī ākhāṇ vakhāṇā |5|

The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the sweetness of love — and all six tastes stand amazed at it. Thirty-six kinds of sweet food long for it, a wonder of wonders. A thousand fountain-streams flow, and lose themselves in awe. The three inner channels of the breath, and the chant 'I am That', cannot hold it. Climbing past the twenties into the twenty-first, the union is accepted. Once you have drunk it you cannot speak — no words can tell it.

6 · The Silent Intoxicated One

galī sād na āvaī jichar muhu khālī | muhu bhariai kiun bolīai ras jībh rasālī | sabad surat simaraṇ ulaṅgh nah nadar nihālī | panth kupanth na sujhaī alamasat khiālī | ḍagamag chāl suḍhāl hai guramat nirālī | chaṛiā chand na lukaī ḍhak jot kunālī |6|

No taste comes from words alone, while the mouth is empty. And when the mouth is full, how can you speak? — the tongue is full of sweetness. Past mind-in-the-Word and past remembrance, the gaze cannot take it in. He sees neither the road nor the wrong road, lost in the thought of one who is gladly drunk. His swaying walk is graceful — the Guru's wisdom, matchless. The risen moon cannot be hidden, though you cover its light with a bowl.

7 · Beyond All Fragrances

lakh lakh bāvan chandanā lakh agar milande | lakh kapūr kathūrīā ambar mahikande | lakh lakh gauṛe med mil kesar chamakande | sabh sugandh ralāi kai aragajā karande | lakh aragaje phulel phul phulavāṛī sande | guramukh sukh phal piram ras vāsū na lahande |7|

A hundred thousand sandalwood trees, and a hundred thousand aloe-woods meeting; a hundred thousand camphors and musks perfuming the sky; a hundred thousand ambergris and saffron gleaming together; every scent blended into the finest perfume; a hundred thousand perfumes and flower-oils from the flower garden — and still they cannot reach the fragrance of the Gurmukh's fruit of joy, the sweetness of love.

8 · Beyond All Beauty

rūp sarūp anūp lakh indrapurī vasande | raṅg biraṅg suraṅg lakh baikuṇṭh rahande | lakh joban sīgār lakh lakh ves karande | lakh dīve lakh tāriān jot sūraj chande | ratan javāhar lakh maṇī jagamag ṭahakande | guramukh sukh phal piram ras jotī na pujande |8|

A hundred thousand forms of matchless beauty live in the city of Indra; a hundred thousand colours and lovely shades live in heaven; a hundred thousand young beauties, a hundred thousand dressed in their finery; a hundred thousand lamps, a hundred thousand stars, the light of sun and moon; a hundred thousand jewels, gems and pearls shimmering and shining — and still they do not reach the light of the Gurmukh's fruit of joy, the sweetness of love.

9 · Beyond All Treasures

chār padārath ridh sidh nidh lakh karoṛī | lakh pāras lakh pārijāt lakh lakhamī joṛī | lakh chintāmaṇ kāmadheṇ chaturaṅg chamoṛī | māṇak motī hīriā niramol maroṛī | lakh kavilās sumer lakh lakh rāj bahoṛī | guramukh sukh phal piram ras mul amul su thoṛī |9|

The four great gifts, the miracle powers and the treasures, in their millions; a hundred thousand gold-making stones, a hundred thousand wish-granting trees, a hundred thousand goddesses of wealth gathered; a hundred thousand wish-granting jewels and wish-granting cows joined four times over; rubies, pearls and diamonds past all price; a hundred thousand Mount Kailashes and Mount Sumerus, a hundred thousand kingdoms given back — and set against the Gurmukh's fruit of joy, the sweetness of love, priceless and past all price, they are very little.

10 · A Drop of the Cup of Love

guramukh sukh phal lakh lakh lakh lahir taraṅgā | lakh darīāu samāu kar lakh laharī aṅgā | lakh darīāu samund vich lakh tīrath gaṅgā | lakh samund gaṛāṛ vich bahu raṅg biraṅgā | lakh gaṛāṛ taraṅg vich lakh ajh kiṇaṅgā | piram piālā pīvaṇā ko burā na chaṅgā |10|

The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is wave upon wave, a hundred thousand of them; a hundred thousand rivers merging, a hundred thousand waves for its limbs; a hundred thousand rivers in the sea, a hundred thousand shrines along the Ganga; a hundred thousand seas inside the ocean, of every colour; a hundred thousand oceans in one wave, a hundred thousand drops in a single tear — and drinking the cup of love, no one is bad and no one is good.

11 · The Boundlessness

ik kavāu pasāu kar oaṅkār suṇāiā | oaṅkār akār lakh brahamaṇḍ baṇāiā | pañj tat utapat lakh trai loa suhāiā | jal thal gir taravar saphal darīāv chalāiā | lakh darīāu samāu kar til tul na tulāiā | kudarat ik atolavī lekhā na likhāiā | kudarat kīm na jāṇīai kādar kin pāiā |11|

With one Word He sounded Onkar; out of Onkar He made a hundred thousand universes; out of the five elements a hundred thousand forms, and made the three worlds lovely; water, land, mountain, tree, and rivers full of life He set flowing; a hundred thousand rivers merge, and yet not a seed's weight of Him can be weighed. His one power cannot be weighed, and its account cannot be written down. That power cannot be priced — who has ever found the Maker?

12 · One Drop of the Cup

guramukh sukh phal prem ras abigat gat bhāī | pārāvār apār hai ko āi na jāī | ād ant parajant nāh paramād vaḍāī | hāth na pāi athāh dī asagāh samāī | piram piāle būnd ik kin kīmat pāī | agamahu agam agādh bodh gur alakh lakhāī |12|

The Gurmukh's fruit of joy, the sweetness of love, is the state of the Hidden One, my brother. It is shore beyond shore, boundless — no one comes and no one goes. No beginning, no end, no limit — the glory of the Highest One. What cannot be sounded cannot be sounded; the bottomless melts into itself. Who has ever set a price on one drop of the cup of love? Beyond the beyond, its wisdom past measuring — the Guru shows what cannot be seen.

13 · One Instant of Love's Relish

guramukh sukh phal piram ras til alakh alekhai | lakh chaurāsīh jūn vich jīa jant visekhai | sabhanā dī romāvalī bahu bidh bahu bhekhai | rom rom lakh lakh sir muhu lakh sarekhai | lakh lakh muh muh jībh kar suṇ bolai dekhai | saṅkh asaṅkh ikīh vīh samasar na nimekhai |13|

The Gurmukh's fruit of joy, the sweetness of love, is a seed-weight unseen and unwritten. Among the eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life there are special beings; count the hairs on them all, in all their kinds and coverings; on every hair a hundred thousand heads and mouths past measure; in every mouth a hundred thousand tongues to hear, to speak and to see; countless, past twenty and past twenty-one — and still not one instant of it is equalled.

14 · How the Relish Is Found

guramukh sukh phal piram ras hui gurusikh melā | sabad surat parachāi kai nit nehu navelā | vīh ikīh chaṛāu chaṛ sikh gur gur chelā | apiu pīai ajar jarai gur sev suhelā | jīvadiā mar chalaṇā hār jiṇai vahelā | sil alūṇī chaṭaṇī lakh ammrit pelā |14|

The Gurmukh's fruit of joy, the sweetness of love, is found when Gursikh meets Gursikh. Mind in the Word delighting, love always new; climbing past the twenties into the twenty-first, the Sikh is Guru and the Guru is disciple. Drinking what cannot be drunk, bearing what cannot be borne, made easy by serving the Guru; living, dying so as to go, losing so as to win with ease; licking the plain, saltless stone, and a hundred thousand nectars are pressed out of it.

15 · The Honour of the Wood

pāṇī kāṭh na ḍobaī pāle dī lajai | sir kalavatr dharāikai sir chaṛiā bhajai | lohe jaṛīai bohithā bhār bhare na tajai | peṭai andar ag rakh tis paṛadā kajai | agarai ḍobai jāṇ kai niramolak dhajai | guramukh mārag chalaṇā chhaḍ khabai sajai |15|

Water does not sink the wood, in honour of having nourished it; and though the saw is set on its head, it bears the load and does not flinch. The ship is bolted with iron, and loaded up, it does not drop its burden. Keeping fire inside its belly, it screens it behind a veil. Knowing what nothing can compare to, it lets itself be sunk — such is its priceless flag. To walk the Gurmukh path is to leave left and right alike behind.

16 · The Diamond

khāṇ ukhaṇ kaḍh āṇade niramolak hīrā | jauharīā hath āvadā ui gahir gambhīrā | majalas andar dekhade pātisāh vajīrā | mul karan ajamāi kai sāhā man dhīrā | aharaṇ utai rakh kai ghaṇ ghāu sarīrā | viralā hī ṭhahirāvadā daragah gur pīrā |16|

Digging and digging in the mine, they bring out the priceless diamond. It comes into the jeweller's hand — the deep, thoughtful ones. In the assembly the kings and ministers look at it. Testing it, they set its price, the bankers steady of mind. Set on the anvil, its body takes the hammer's blows. Rare is the one it holds steady in the Court of the Guru, the master and guide.

17 · The Gurmukh's Walk

tar ḍubai ḍubā tarai pī piram piālā | jiṇ hārai hārai jiṇai ehu guramukh chālā | mārag khaṇḍe dhār hai bhavajal bharanālā | vālahu nikā ākhīai gur panth nirālā | haumai bajar bhār hai duramat durālā | guramat āp gavāi kai sikh jāi sukhālā |17|

The one who swims, drowns; and the one who drowns, swims — for he has drunk the cup of love. Winning, he loses; losing, he wins — that is the Gurmukh's walk. The path is the edge of a sword laid over the ocean of fear. They call it finer than a hair — the Guru's matchless path. Pride is a crushing weight, and bad thinking a hard road. By the Guru's wisdom, losing himself, the Sikh goes easily.

18 · Spread Like the Banyan

dharat vaṛai vaṛ bīu hoi jaṛ andar jammai | hoi barūṭā chuhachuhā mūl ḍāl dharammai | birakh akār bithār kar bahu jaṭā palammai | jaṭā laṭā mil dharat vich hoi mūl agammai | chhānv ghaṇī pat sohaṇe phal lakkh lakhammai | phal phal andar bīa bahu gurasikh marammai |18|

Going into the earth, the seed sprouts and grows in the root. It becomes a bright young banyan, its root and its branch holding to what is right. Spreading into a great tree, many hanging roots come down; those hanging roots meet the earth and become roots past measuring. Thick shade, lovely leaves, and fruit past counting; and in every fruit are many seeds — so are the Gursikhs, keepers of the secret.

19 · The Guru as the Tree

ik sikh dui sādh saṅg pañjīn paramesar | nau aṅg nīl anīl sunn avatār mahesar | vīh ikīh asaṅkh saṅkh mukatai mukatesar | nagar nagar mai sahans sikh des des lakhesar | ik dūn birakhahu lakh phal phal bīa lomesar | bhog bhugat rājesurā jog jugat jogesar |19|

One Sikh, two the sangat, five the Highest One; nine the limbs, blue beyond blue, the coming-down of the emptiness, and Mahesh; twenty, twenty-one, past counting, the freed and the Lord of the freed; in city after city a thousand Sikhs, in land after land a hundred thousand; from one tree a hundred thousand fruits, and in each fruit seeds past counting; kings in their enjoyment, yogis in the way of yoga.

20 · The Merchant of the Name

pīr murīdā pirahaṛī vaṇajāre sāhai | saudā ikat haṭ hai sansār visāhai | koī vechai kauḍīā ko dam ugāhai | koī rupaye vikaṇai sunaīe ko ḍāhai | koī ratan vaṇañjadā kar siphat salāhai | vaṇaj supatā sāh nāl vesāhu nibāhai |20|

The love of master and disciple is a trade, and the trader is the banker. The goods are at one shop, and the world comes to buy. One sells shells, another offers coins; one buys with rupees, another lays out gold; one deals in jewels, singing praise and adoration. The wise trader keeps faith with the banker right to the end.

21 · The True Guru, the True Banker

saudā ikat haṭ hai sāhu satigur pūrā | auguṇ lai guṇ vikaṇai vachanai dā sūrā | saphal karai simmal birakh sovaran manūrā | vās suvās nivās kar kāu hans na ūrā | ghughū sujh sujhāidā saṅkh motī chūrā | ved katebahu bāharā gur sabad hajūrā |21|

The goods are at one shop — and the banker is the perfect True Guru. He takes your faults and sells you goodness, a hero true to his word. He makes the fruitless silk-cotton tree bear fruit, and turns rusty waste into gold. Giving a home of fragrance, He makes the crow no less than the swan. He gives the owl its sight, and the shell is ground into pearl. Past the Vedas and the scriptures, the Guru's Word is where He is.

22 · Praise Beyond Praise

lakh upamā upamā karai upamā na vakhāṇai | lakh mahimā mahimā karai mahimā hairāṇai | lakh mahātam mahātamā na mahātam jāṇai | lakh usatat usatat karai usatat na siñāṇai | ād purakh ādes hai main māṇ nimāṇai |22|

A hundred thousand give praise upon praise, and still the praise cannot be told. A hundred thousand give glory upon glory, and still the glory astounds. A hundred thousand great ones cannot know His greatness. A hundred thousand give adoration upon adoration, and still the adoration is not grasped. I bow to the First Being — and I, who had no honour, find honour.

23 · The Guru's Glory

lakh mat lakh budh sudh lakh lakh chaturāī | lakh lakh ukat siāṇapān lakh surat samāī | lakh giān dhiān lakh lakh simaraṇ rāī | lakh vidiā lakh ishaṭ jap tant mant kamāī | lakh bhugat lakh lakh bhagat lakh mukat milāī | jiu tāre dih ugavai ānher gavāī | guramukh sukh phal agam hai hoi piram sakhāī |23|

A hundred thousand minds, a hundred thousand kinds of understanding, a hundred thousand clevernesses; a hundred thousand skills and wisdoms, a hundred thousand minds merged in the Word; a hundred thousand knowings and meditations, a hundred thousand remembrances; a hundred thousand learnings, a hundred thousand chosen gods, chanting and magic words earned; a hundred thousand enjoyments, a hundred thousand devotions, a hundred thousand freedoms joined together — and then, as the day dawns, the stars vanish and the darkness goes. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is past reaching, and becomes love's own companion.

24 · The Wonder of Waheguru

lakh acharaj acharaj hoi acharaj hairāṇā | visam hoi visamād lakh lakh choj viḍāṇā | lakh adabhut paramadabhutī paramadabhut bhāṇā | abigat gat agādh bodh aparampar bāṇā | akath kathā ajapā japaṇ net net vakhāṇā | ād purakh ādes hai kudarat kurabāṇā |24|

A hundred thousand wonders become wonder, and wonder is astounded; amazement becomes amazement, in a hundred thousand wonderful plays; a hundred thousand marvels, most marvellous, the marvel of the highest Will; the state of the Hidden One, wisdom past measuring, a covering with no bounds; the untold story, the chant that cannot be chanted, told as 'not this, not this'. I bow to the First Being — I give myself to His power.

25 · The Six Gurus

pārabraham pūraṇ braham gur nānak deu | gur aṅgad gur aṅg te sach sabad sameu | amarā pad gur aṅgadahu at alakh abheu | gur amarahu gur rām nām gat achhal achheu | rām rasak arajan gurū abichal arakheu | harigovind govind gur kāraṇ karaṇeu |25|

The Highest One, the perfect Brahm, is Guru Nanak Dev. Guru Angad, from the Guru's own body, merged into the true Word. The deathless state came from Guru Angad — most unseen, past measuring. From Guru Amardas came the Name of God, a state whole and never fooled. Tasting that Name, Guru Arjan, unshakable and never dying. Hargobind, Govind the Guru, the cause behind every cause.
