Chapter 14

Var 14 · Service

The Guru is the honour of the honourless — and the whole of the path is loving service. The earth, the water, the tree, the cotton and the crushed sugarcane all teach it: bear everything, and give.

1 · The Honour of the Honourless

satigur sachā nāu guramukh jāṇīai | sādhasaṅgat sach thāu sabad vakhāṇīai | daragah sach niāu jal dudh chhāṇīai | gur saraṇī asarāu sev kamāṇīai | sabad surat suṇ gāu andar āṇīai | tis kurabāṇai jāu māṇ nimāṇīai |1|

The True Guru's true Name is known by the Gurmukh. The sangat is the true place, told of in the Word. In the Court there is true justice, sifting the milk from the water. In the Guru's shelter there is shelter, and there service is earned. Mind in the Word, hearing and singing, it is brought inside. I give myself to Him — the honour of those who have no honour.

2 · The Sangat of Gursikhs

chār varan gurasikh saṅgat āvaṇā | guramukh mārag vikh ant na pāvaṇā | tul na ammrit ikh kīratan gāvaṇā | chār padārath bhikh bhikhārī pāvaṇā | lekh alekh alikh sabad kamāvaṇā | sujhan bhūt bhavikh na āp jaṇāvaṇā |2|

The four castes come into the sangat of the Gursikhs. The Gurmukh path is hard going, and its end cannot be found. Nothing equals the nectar-sugarcane of singing kirtan. The four great gifts are the alms this beggar receives. Unwritten, and past writing, the Word is lived. Past and future are known to him, and yet he makes no show of himself.

3 · The Unreachable Vision

ād purakh ādes alakh lakhāiā | anahad sabad aves aghaṛ ghaṛāiā | sādhasaṅgat paraves apio pīāiā | gur pūre upades sach diṛāiā | guramukh bhūpat ves na viāpai māiā | brahame bisan mahesha na darasan pāiā |3|

Bowing to the First Being, what cannot be seen is shown. The Word that no one plays enters in, and the shapeless is given shape. Entering the sangat, what cannot be drunk is drunk. By the perfect Guru's teaching, Truth is made firm. The Gurmukh, dressed like a king, is untouched by maya — a sight Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva never won.

4 · Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva

bisanai das avatār nāv gaṇāiā | kar kar asur saṅghār vād vadhāiā | brahamai ved vīchār ākh suṇāiā | man andar ahaṅkār jagat upāiā | mahādeu lāi tār tāmas tāiā | guramukh mokh duār āp gavāiā |4|

Vishnu counted up the names of his ten comings-down, and killing demons again and again, swelled the strife. Brahma thought over the Vedas and recited them, but with pride in his mind he brought forth the world. Mahadev, fixed in his trance, burned in his own darkness. The Gurmukh, at the door of freedom, has lost himself.

5 · The Sages and Sukdev

nārad munī akhāi gal suṇāiā | lāitabārī khāi chugal sadāiā | sanakādik dar jāi tāmas āiā | das avatār karāi janam galāiā | jin suk jaṇiā māi dukh sahāiā | guramukh sukh phal khāi ajar jarāiā |5|

Narad is called a sage, and yet he went about telling tales, a carrier of gossip. The Sanak sages went to the Door, but came in darkness. The ten comings-down wasted their births. The mother who bore Sukdev suffered the pain of it. The Gurmukh, eating the fruit of joy, carries what cannot be carried.

6 · The Earth

dharatī nīvīn hoi charaṇ chit lāiā | charaṇ kaval ras bhoi āp gavāiā | charaṇ reṇ tihu loi ichh ichhāiā | dhīraj dharam jamoi santokh samāiā | jīvaṇ jugat paroi rijak pujāiā | mannai hukam rajāi guramukh jāiā |6|

The earth, by becoming low, fixes its heart on the feet. Tasting the ground of the lotus feet, it loses itself. The dust of those feet is longed for through all three worlds. Steadiness, right living and contentment take root in it. Threading the way of life, it feeds every living thing. Accepting God's Will and Command, the Gurmukh goes on.

7 · Water

pāṇī dharatī vich dharat vich pāṇīai | nīchahu nīch na hich niramal jāṇīai | sahadā bāhalī khich nivai nīvāṇīai | man melī ghul mich sabh raṅg māṇīai | vichhuṛai nāh virach dar paravāṇīai | paraupakār sarach bhagat nīsāṇīai |7|

Water is in the earth, and the earth is in the water. Lowest of the low, without hesitating, it is known as pure. It bears a great deal of pulling about, and still always bows to the low. Mixing hearts, it blends with everything, and enjoys every colour. It does not part in disgust, and is accepted at the Door. Brimming over with doing good, it is the very mark of devotion.

8 · The Tree

dharatī utai rukh sir talavāiā | āp sahande dukh jag varusāiā | phal de lāhan bhukh vaṭ vagāiā | chhāv ghaṇī bah sukh man parachāiā | vaḍhan āi manukh āp tachhāiā | virale hī sanamukh bhāṇā bhāiā |8|

On the earth the tree stands with its head bowed down. Bearing the suffering itself, it rains blessing on the world. Giving its fruit, it eases hunger, even when it is struck with a stick. In its thick shade a person sits, and the mind is soothed. Men come to cut it down, and it lets itself be felled. Rare is the one who faces the Guru and loves His Will.

9 · The Tree's Further Gifts

rukhahu ghar chhāvāi thammh thamāiā | sir karavat dharāi beṛ ghaṛāiā | lohe nāl jaṛāi pūr tarāiā | lakh laharī darīāi pār laṅghāiā | gurasikhān bhai bhāi sabad kamāiā | ikas pichhai lāi lakh chhuḍāiā |9|

From the tree the house is roofed and the pillar propped up. Set the saw on its head, and the boat is made. Bolted with iron, it carries the whole load across. Through a hundred thousand river-waves it ferries them over. So the Gursikhs, in awe and love, live the Word: behind one of them, a hundred thousand are set free.

10 · The Sesame Seed

ghāṇī til pīṛāi tel kaḍhāiā | dīvai tel jalāi anher gavāiā | mas masavāṇī pāi sabad likhāiā | suṇ sikh likh likhāi alekh suṇāiā | guramukh āp gavāi sabad kamāiā | giān añjan liv lāi sahaj samāiā |10|

The sesame is crushed in the press and the oil is drawn out. Lit in the lamp, that oil drives the darkness away. Made into soot in the inkpot, the Word is written with it; heard, learned, written and copied, the Unwritten One is made known. The Gurmukh, losing himself, lives the Word; with the eye-paint of knowledge set in place, he melts into calm ease.

11 · Even the Beast Serves

dudh dei khaṛ khāi na āp gaṇāiā | dudhahu dahī jamāi ghiu nipajāiā | gohā mūt limbāi pūj karāiā | chhatīh ammrit khāi kuchīl karāiā | sādhasaṅgat chal jāi satigur dhiāiā | saphal janam jag āi sukh phal pāiā |11|

The cow gives milk, eats grass, and never counts itself; from its milk curd is set, and butter is made; its dung and its urine, spread on the floor, make a place of worship. It eats grass and yields thirty-six good foods — and even what it soils is made pure. Going to the sangat, a person meditates on the True Guru; his coming into the world is fulfilled, and he gains the fruit of joy.

12 · The Cotton — Bearing Suffering

dukh sahai kapāh bhāṇā bhāiā | velaṇ vel vilāi tumb tumbāiā | piñaṇ piñj phirāi sūt katāiā | nalī julāhe vāh chīr vuṇāiā | khumb chaṛāin bāh nīr dhuvāiā | painh sāh pātisāh sabhā suhāiā |12|

The cotton bears its suffering, loving God's Will. Its seeds are pressed out, and it is teased and teased; it is combed and combed, and the thread is spun; run through the weaver's reed, the cloth is woven; laid on the bleaching-ground and washed in water — and then kings and emperors wear it, and it adorns the gathering.

13 · Madder and Sugarcane

jāṇ majīṭhai raṅg āp pīhāiā | kade na chhaḍai saṅg baṇat baṇāiā | kaṭ kamād nisaṅg āp pīṛāiā | karai na man ras bhaṅg amio chuāiā | guṛ sakar khaṇḍ achaṅg bhog bhugāiā | sādh na moṛan aṅg jag parachāiā |13|

Know the madder's fast red — it lets itself be ground down. It never leaves the bond it has made; that is the nature built into it. The sugarcane, cut without flinching, lets itself be pressed; it does not lose its sweetness, but drips out nectar. Raw sugar, white sugar and fine sweets are enjoyed from it. The holy never turn a limb aside, and so they gladden the world.

14 · The Iron

lohā ārhaṇ pāi tāvaṇ tāiā | ghaṇ aharaṇ haṇavāi dukh sahāiā | ārasīā ghaṛavāi mul karāiā | khahurī sāṇ dharāi aṅg hachhāiā | pairān heṭh rakhāi sikal karāiā | guramukh āp gavāi āp dikhāiā |14|

Iron is put in the furnace and heated in the fire; struck on the anvil by the hammer, it bears the pain; made into mirrors, its price is set; laid on the rough grindstone, its surface is cleaned; held under the feet, it is polished bright. The Gurmukh, losing himself, sees the Self.

15 · The Rebab

chaṅgā rukh vaḍhāi rabāb ghaṛāiā | chhelī hoi kuhāi mās vaṇḍāiā | āndrahu tār baṇāi chamm maṛhāiā | sādhasaṅgat vich āi nād vajāiā | rāg raṅg upajāi sabad suṇāiā | satigur purakh dhiāi sahaj samāiā |15|

A good tree is felled and the rebab is made; a goat is killed and its meat is shared; from its gut the strings are made, and the instrument is bound with skin. Coming into the sangat, it sounds the melody; raising the tune and the joy, it makes the Word heard. Meditating on the True Guru-Being, it melts into calm ease.

16 · The Sandalwood

channaṇ rukh upāi vaṇ khaṇḍ rakhiā | pavaṇ gavaṇ kar jāi alakh na lakhiā | vāsū birakh buhāi sach parakhiā | sabhe varan gavāi bhakh abhakhiā | sādhasaṅgat bhai bhāi apiu pī chakhiā | guramukh sahaj subhāi prem pratakhiā |16|

The sandal tree is made and set inside the forest grove. The wind comes and goes, and never grasps what is unseen. Spreading its fragrance, it makes the trees fragrant, and the true is tested. Losing every caste, it turns what could not be eaten into food. In the sangat, in awe and love, it drinks and tastes what cannot be drunk. The Gurmukh, in calm ease, makes love plain to see.

17 · The Service of the Gursikhs

gurasikhān gurasikh sev kamāvaṇī | chār padārath bhikh phakīrān pāvaṇī | lekh alekh alikh bāṇī gāvaṇī | bhāi bhagat ras ikh amiu chuāvaṇī | tul na bhūt bhavikh na kīmat pāvaṇī | guramukh mārag vikh lavai na lāvaṇī |17|

The Gursikhs earn the service of the Gursikhs. The four great gifts are the alms given to holy beggars. Unwritten, past writing, they sing Gurbani. In love and devotion, the sugarcane sweetness drips its nectar. Past and future do not equal it, and its price cannot be set. Nothing comes near even a single step of the Gurmukh's path.

18 · The Fruit of Service

indr purī lakh rāj nīr bharāvaṇī | lakh surag siratāj galā pīhāvaṇī | ridh sidh nidh lakh sāj chul jhukāvaṇī | sādh garīb nivāj garībī āvaṇī | anahad sabad agāj bāṇī gāvaṇī |18|

The kingdom of Indra and a hundred thousand realms are only carrying its water; a hundred thousand crowns of heaven are only grinding at its mill; a hundred thousand riches, powers and treasures are only stoking its fire. The holy, who cherish the poor, come to humility. As the Word sounds with no one playing it, they sing Gurbani.

19 · The Fruit of Service, Continued

hom jag lakh bhog chaṇe chabāvaṇī | tīrath purab sañjog pair dhuvāvaṇī | giān dhiān lakh jog sabad suṇāvaṇī | rahai na sahasā sog jhātī pāvaṇī | bhaujal vich arog na lahar ḍarāvaṇī | laṅgh sañjog vijog guramat āvaṇī |19|

A hundred thousand sacred fires and offerings are only chewing its roasted grains; the meeting of all the pilgrim places is only washing its feet; a hundred thousand knowings, meditations and yogas are only reciting its Word. No worry and no grief is left to the one who so much as glances at it. Whole in the ocean of fear, no wave can frighten him. Crossing past meeting and parting, he comes to the Guru's wisdom.

20 · The Boundless Fruit of Service

dharatī bīu bījāi sahas phalāiā | gurasikh mukh pavāi na lekh likhāiā | dharatī dei phalāi joī phal pāiā | gurasikh mukh samāi sabh phal lāiā | bīje bājh na khāi na dharat jamāiā | guramukh chit vasāi ichh pujāiā |20|14|

The earth is sown with seed and yields a thousand times over. Put in a Gursikh's mouth, it is past all reckoning. The earth gives its fruit — whoever sows, gets the fruit. Put in a Gursikh's mouth, it bears every fruit there is. Without sowing there is no eating, and the earth grows nothing. Set the Gurmukh in your heart, and every wish is fulfilled.
