Chapter 15

Var 15 · Without the True Guru

The True Guru is the true king, giver, banker and physician — and every worldly substitute for Him, from pilgrimage to the gold-making stone, fails the one who runs to it instead.

1 · The True Guru is All

satigur sachā pātisāhu kūṛe bādisāh dunīāve | satigur nāthā nāth hai hoi naun nāth anāth nithāve | satigur sach dātār hai hor dāte phirade pāchhāve | satigur karatā purakh hai kar karatūt nināvan nāve | satigur sachā sāhu hai hor sāh avesāh uchāve | satigur sachā vaid hai hor vaid sabh kaid kūṛāve | viṇ satigur sabh nigosāvai |1|

The True Guru is the true Emperor; the emperors of this world are false. The True Guru is the Master of masters; beside Him the nine Nath yogis are masterless and homeless. The True Guru is the true Giver; every other giver trails behind Him, begging. The True Guru is the Creator-Being; doing His own deeds, He makes the nameless famous. The True Guru is the true Banker; the other bankers cannot be relied on and go broke. The True Guru is the true Physician; every other healer's cure is a false prison. Without the True Guru, everyone is masterless.

2 · The Same

satigur tīrath jāṇīai aṭhasaṭh tīrath saraṇī āe | satigur deu abheu hai hor dev gur sev tarāe | satigur pāras parasiai lakh pāras pā khāk suhāe | satigur pūrā pārijāt pārajāt lakh saphal dhiāe | sukh sāgar satigur purakh ratan padārath sikh suṇāe | chintāmaṇ satigur charaṇ chintāmaṇī achint karāe | viṇ satigur sabh dūjai bhāe |2|

Know the True Guru as the pilgrimage; all sixty-eight holy places come to His shelter. The True Guru is the God past all mystery; the other gods are carried across by serving Him. Touching the True Guru, that gold-making stone, a hundred thousand gold-making stones become the dust of His feet. The True Guru is the perfect wish-granting tree; a hundred thousand wish-trees bear their fruit by meditating on Him. The True Guru-Being is the ocean of peace, telling His Sikhs where the treasure of jewels lies. The Guru's feet are the wish-granting jewel that makes a person free of care. Without the True Guru, everyone is lost in loving something else.

3 · The Making of the Human Body

lakh chaurāsīh jūn vich utam jūn su māṇas dehī | akhī dekhai nadar kar jihabā bolai bachan bidehī | kannī suṇadā surat kar vās lae nak sās sanehī | hathī kirat kamāvaṇī pairī chalaṇ jot ivehī | guramukh janam sakārathā manamukh mūrat mat kinehī | karatā purakh visār kai māṇas dī man ās dharehī | pasū paretahu burī hurehī |3|

Among the eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life, the highest is the human body. The eyes see with their glance, and the tongue speaks words that have no body; the ears hear closely, and the nose draws in the loving breath; the hands earn honest work, and the feet walk by this same light. The Gurmukh's birth bears fruit; but what does the manmukh understand, dull as a stone idol? Forgetting the Creator-Being, he pins his heart's hope on a mortal man. Such a nature is worse than a beast's or a ghost's.

4 · The Slave of a Slave

satigur sāhib chhaḍ kai manamukh hoi bande dā bandā | hukamī bandā hoi kai nit uṭh jāi salām karandā | āṭh pahar hath joṛ kai hoi hazūrī khaṛā rahandā | nīd na bhukh na sukh tis sūlī chaṛhhiā rahai ḍarandā | pāṇī pālā dhup chhāu sir utai jhal dukh sahandā | ātasabājī sār vekh raṇ vich ghāil hoi marandā | gur pūre viṇ jūn bhavandā |4|

Leaving the True Guru, the Master, the manmukh becomes the slave of a slave. Hired out, he gets up every day to go and salute his master. All eight watches he stands at attention, hands folded, waiting. No sleep, no hunger, no ease — as if hoisted on a stake, he stands there in fear. Water, cold, heat and glare he bears on his head, suffering. Watching the sparks fly off the steel, he is wounded on the field and dies. Without the perfect Guru, he wanders through the wombs.

5 · The Ear-Slit Yogis

nāthān nāth na sevanī hoi anāth gurū bahu chele | kann paṛāi bibhūt lāi khinthā khapar ḍaṇḍā hele | ghar ghar ṭukar maṅgade siṅī nād vājāin bhele | bhugat piālā vaṇḍīai sidh sādhik sivarātī mele | bārah panth chalāide bārah vāṭī khare duhele | viṇ gur sabad na sijhanī bājīgar kar bājī khele | annhai annhā khūhī ṭhele |5|

They do not serve the Master of masters; having no master, one guru gathers many disciples. Slitting their ears, smearing on ash, with patched cloak, begging-bowl and staff; door to door they beg for scraps, sounding the horn and the pipe together. The shared bowl is handed round, and masters and seekers gather on Shiva's night. They start twelve sects and take twelve separate roads, wretched. Without the Guru's Word they get nowhere; like jugglers they play their game. The blind shove the blind into the well.

6 · Without the Perfect Guru, Only Weeping

sach dātār visār kai maṅgatiān no maṅgaṇ jāhī | ḍhāḍhī vārān gānvade vair virodh jodh sālāhī | nāī gāvan saddaṛe kar karatūt mue badarāhī | paṛade bhaṭ kavit kar kūṛ kusat mukhah alāhī | hoi asirit purohitā prīt parītai virat maṅgāhī | chhurīā māran paṅkhīe haṭ haṭ maṅgade bhikh bhavāhī | gur pūre viṇ rovan dhāhī |6|

Forgetting the true Giver, they go begging from beggars. Bards sing ballads, praising warriors of feud and fighting. Barbers sing mourning-songs, dead in what they do, on the evil road. Court poets recite verses, speaking lies and flattery. Becoming hired priests, they beg their share by pretended love. They snare other people's birds, and beg from shop to shop, wandering for alms. Without the perfect Guru, they cry aloud and wail.

7 · False Kin

karatā purakh na chetio kīte no karatā kar jāṇai | nār bhatār piār kar put potā piu dād vakhāṇai | dhīā bhaiṇā māṇ kar tusan rusan sāk babāṇai | sāhur pīhar nānake paravārai sādhār dhiṅāṇai | chaj achār vīchār vich pañchā andar pat paravāṇai | ant kāl jam jāl vich sāthī koi na hoi siñāṇai | gur pūre viṇ jāi jamāṇai |7|

He does not remember the Creator-Being, but takes what was created for the Creator. Loving wife and husband, he talks of son and grandson, father and grandfather. Proud of daughters and sisters, pleased with some of his family and cross with others. In-laws, parents' home, mother's people — he props the family up by force. For his good conduct and thought he is honoured among the elders. At the last hour, in Death's noose, he knows no companion at all. Without the perfect Guru, he goes to Death's house.

8 · False Traders

satigur sāhu athāhu chhaḍ kūṛe sāhu kūṛe vaṇajāre | saudāgar saudāgarī ghoṛe vaṇaj karan at bhāre | ratanā parakh javāharī hīre māṇak vaṇaj pasāre | hoi sarāph bajāj bahu suinā rupā kapaṛ bhāre | kirasāṇī kirasāṇ kar bīj luṇan bohal visathāre | lāhā toṭā var sarāp kar sañjog vijog vichāre | gur pūre viṇ dukh saisāre |8|

Leaving the True Guru, the Banker past measuring, the banker is false and the trader is false. Merchants trade their goods, dealing in horses by the heavy load. Jewellers test gems, spreading a trade in diamonds and rubies. Turning money-changers and cloth-sellers, they weigh out much gold, silver and cloth. Farmers do their farming, sowing seed and reaping heaps spread wide. Profit and loss, blessing and curse — they reckon up meeting and parting. Without the perfect Guru, the world is sorrow.

9 · False Physicians

satigur vaid na sevio rogī vaid na rog miṭāvai | kām krodh vich lobh mohu dubidhā kar kar dhrohu vadhāvai | ādh biādh upādh vich mar mar jammai dukh vihāvai | āvai jāi bhavāīai bhavajal andar pār na pāvai | āsā manasā mohaṇī tāmas tisanā sānt na āvai | baladī andar tel pāi kiu man mūrakh ag bujhāvai | gur pūre viṇ kauṇ chhuḍāvai |9|

He did not serve the True Guru, the Physician, and a sick doctor cannot cure the disease. In lust and anger, greed and clinging, doubt on doubt, he swells his own deceit. In trouble, sickness and strife he dies and is born again, his days passing in pain. Coming and going, he is spun about, and finds no shore on the ocean of fear. Hope and craving put him under a spell; in dark passion and thirst no peace comes. Pouring oil on the fire inside, how will the foolish mind put out the flame? Without the perfect Guru, who sets him free?

10 · False Pilgrimages

satigur tīrath chhaḍ kai aṭhisaṭh tīrath nāvaṇ jāhī | bagul samādh lagāi kai jiu jal jantān ghuṭ ghuṭ khāhī | hasatī nīr navālīan bāhar nikal kheh uḍāhī | nadī na ḍubai tūmbaṛī tīrath vis nivārai nāhī | pathar nīr pakhālīai chit kaṭhor na bhijai gāhī | manamukh bharam na utarai bhambhalabhūse khāi bhavāhī | gur pūre viṇ pār na pāhī |10|

Leaving the True Guru, the true pilgrimage, they go to bathe at all sixty-eight holy places. Sitting still as a heron in a trance, they gulp down the water creatures. Elephants bathed in the water come out and throw dust over themselves again. The gourd is not drowned in the river, and the holy place does not take away its bitterness. A stone washed in water — its hard heart is not soaked through. The manmukh's doubt does not lift; blundering about, he is spun around. Without the perfect Guru, they never reach the far shore.

11 · The True Guru Is the Gold-Making Stone

satigur pāras paraharai pathar pāras ḍhūṇḍhaṇ jāe | asaṭ dhāt ik dhāt kar lukadā phirai na pragaṭī āe | lai vaṇavās udās hoi māiādhārī bharam bhulāe | hathī kālakh chhuthiā andar kālakh lobh lubhāe | rāj ḍaṇḍ tis pakaṛiā jam pur bhī jam ḍaṇḍ sahāe | manamukh janam akārathā dūjai bhāi kudāi harāe | gur pūre viṇ bharam na jāe |11|

He throws away the True Guru, the gold-making stone, and goes off searching for a gold-making stone. It turns eight metals to gold, and still hides itself and makes no show. Taking to the forest and to giving up the world, he is fooled by doubt and tied to maya. Soot is on his hands; touch it, and the blackness of greed is inside him. The king's rod seizes him, and in Death's city too he takes Death's rod. The manmukh's birth is wasted; loving something else, he loses a game he never had to lose. Without the perfect Guru, doubt does not go.

12 · The Guru, the Wish-Tree

pārijāt gur chhaḍ kai maṅgan kalap taron phal kache | pārajāt lakh surag saṇ āvā gavaṇ bhavaṇ vich pache | marade kar kar kāmanā dit bhugat vich rach virache | tāre hoi agās chaṛ oṛak tuṭ tuṭ thān halache | mān piu hoe ketaṛe ketaṛiān de hoe bache | pāp punn bīu bījade dukh sukh phal andar chahamache | gur pūre viṇ har na parache |12|

Leaving the wish-granting tree, the Guru, they beg unripe fruit from the heavenly tree. A hundred thousand wish-trees and heavens along with them — all rot in the round of coming and going. Making their wishes, they die, sunk in whatever they are given to enjoy. They rise as stars into the sky, and at last they fall, and the places shake. How many became mother and father — and whose children were they? Sowing the seed of sin and of merit, they are trapped in the fruit of pain and pleasure. Without the perfect Guru, the heart is never pleased with God.

13 · Wretched Without the Perfect Guru

sukh sāgar gurū chhaḍ kai bhavajal andar bhambhalabhūse | laharī nāl pachhāṛīan haumai aganī andar lūse | jam dar badhe mārīan jamadūtān de dhake dhūse | goil vāsā chār din nāu dharāin īse mūse | ghaṭ na koi akhāidā āpo dhāpī hairat hūse | sāir de marajīvaṛe karan majūrī khechal khūse | gur pūre viṇ ḍāṅg ḍaṅgūse |13|

Leaving the ocean of peace, the Guru, they blunder about in the ocean of fear. They are dashed by the waves, and scorched in the fire of pride. Tied up at Death's door they are beaten, shoved and pushed by Death's officers. A four-day stay in the pasture — and they take names like Isa and Musa. Nobody calls himself the lesser; in the scramble each one is dazed and lost. Divers of the sea do their hard work, and are worn out by it. Without the perfect Guru, only blows and beatings.

14 · Fire Grows With Enjoyment

chintāmaṇ gur chhaḍ kai chintāmaṇ chintā na gavāe | chitavaṇīā lakh rāt dihu trās na trisanā agan bujhāe | suinā rupā agalā māṇak motī aṅg haṇḍhāe | pāṭ paṭambar painh ke choā chandan mah mahakāe | hāthī ghoṛe pākhare mahal bagīche suphal phalāe | sundar nārī sej sukh māiā moh dhoh lapaṭāe | baladī andar tel jiu āsā manasā dukh vihāe | gur pūre viṇ jam pur jāe |14|

Leaving the wish-granting jewel, the Guru, the world's own wish-jewel does not drive away care. A hundred thousand worries, night and day; fear and the fire of craving are never put out. He wears much gold and silver, rubies and pearls on his body; he puts on robes of silk, and perfumes himself with sandal and sweet oils; elephants, saddled horses, palaces and fruitful gardens; the ease of a beautiful woman's bed — all clung to in the trickery of maya. Like oil in a burning lamp, so hope and craving pass away in pain. Without the perfect Guru, he goes to Death's city.

15 · A Description of God's Power

lakh tīrath lakh devate pāras lakh rasāiṇ jāṇai | lakh chintāmaṇ pārajāt kāmadhen lakh ammrit āṇai | ratanā saṇ sāir ghaṇe ridh sidh nidh sobhā sulatāṇai | lakh padārath lakh phal lakh nidhān andar phuramāṇai | lakh sāh pātisāh lakh lakh nāth avatār suhāṇai | dānai kīmat nā pavai dātai kauṇ sumār vakhāṇai | kudarat kādar no kurabāṇai |15|

A hundred thousand holy places, a hundred thousand gods, a hundred thousand gold-making stones and life-giving medicines — know them all; a hundred thousand wish-granting jewels, wish-trees and wish-cows, a hundred thousand nectars brought forth; jewels along with all the seas, wealth-powers, miracle powers and treasure, and the glory of kings; a hundred thousand goods, a hundred thousand fruits, a hundred thousand treasures, all under His Command; a hundred thousand bankers and emperors, a hundred thousand Nath yogis and lovely comings-down of God — the gift cannot be priced; who can measure the Giver? To the Creator's power I give myself.

16 · Guru is Disciple, Disciple is Guru

ratanā dekhai sabh ko ratan pārakhū viralā koī | rāg nād sabh ko suṇai sabad surat samajhai viraloī | gurasikh ratan padārathā sādhasaṅgat mil māl paroī | hīrai hīrā bedhiā sabad surat mil parachā hoī | pārabraham pūran braham gur govind siñāṇai soī | guramukh sukh phal sahaj ghar piram piālā jāṇ jaṇoī | gur chelā chelā gur hoī |16|

Everyone looks at jewels, but rare is the one who can truly value a jewel. Everyone hears melody and tune, but rare is the one who understands the Word through his own awareness. The Gursikhs are treasures of jewels, strung as a necklace in the holy company. Diamond pierces diamond — awareness meets the Word, and love is formed. He alone knows the Highest One, the perfect Brahm, the Guru-God. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the natural home; know it as the cup of love. The Guru becomes the disciple, and the disciple the Guru.

17 · The Worth of the Limbs

pauṛī 17 : aṅgān dī saphalatā māṇas janam amol hai hoi amol sādhasaṅg pāe | akhī dui niramolakā satigur daras dhiān liv lāe | masatak sīs amol hai charaṇ saraṇ gur dhūṛ suhāe | jihabā sravaṇ amolakā sabad surat suṇ samajh suṇāe | hasat charaṇ niramolakā guramukh mārag sev kamāe | guramukh ridā amol hai andar gur upades vasāe | pat paravāṇai tol tulāe |17|

A human birth is priceless; becoming priceless, it finds the holy company. The two eyes are past price when they are fixed in love on the True Guru's face. The forehead and the head are priceless, made lovely by the dust of the Guru's feet in the shelter of His refuge. The tongue and the ears are priceless, hearing, understanding and telling the Word. The hands and the feet are priceless, earning service on the Gurmukh path. The Gurmukh's heart is priceless, keeping the Guru's teaching inside it. Honoured and accepted, it is weighed on the true scale.

18 · God's Gifts and Our Forgetting

Out of blood and seed He shaped you, and made a wonderful, marvellous form; He kept you in the pit of the womb, put life in you and made a lovely body; mouth, eyes, nose, ears, hands, feet, teeth and hair He gave and counted out; sight, the way of the Word, awareness and love, the delight of music, colour, taste and touch; a high family, a high birth, every hair and limb reckoned; giving milk to your infant mind, He drew you through all the filth of the cradle. Then you grew clever and understood — and left the Creator to cling to what was created. Without the perfect Guru, maya has you under her spell.

19 · Without the Guru, the Round of Wombs

manamukh māṇas deh te pasū paret achet chaṅgere | hoi suchet achet hoi māṇas māṇas de val here | pasū na maṅgai pasū te paṅkherū paṅkherū ghere | chaurāsīh lakh jūn vich utam māṇas jūn bhalere | utam man bach karam kar janam maraṇ bhavajal lakh phere | rājā parajā hoi kai sukh vich dukh hoi bhale bhalere | kutā rāj bahālīai chakī chaṭaṇ jāi anhere | gur pūre viṇ garabh vasere |19|

Better than the manmukh in human form is the beast or the ghost that knows nothing. Grown clever, a man turns clever-foolish, looking to another man for help. A beast does not beg from a beast, and a bird does not circle round another bird. Among the eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life, the human birth is the finest and best. With the highest thought, word and deed — or else a hundred thousand rounds of birth and death on the ocean of fear. Whether you become king or subject, in every pleasure there is pain, however good. Seat a dog on a throne, and it will go off to lick at the millstone in the dark. Without the perfect Guru, back to living in the womb.

20 · No Relish Without the Gurmukh

In grove after grove there are plants, but without sandal none becomes sandalwood. In mountain after mountain there are the eight metals, but without the gold-making stone none becomes gold. Among the four castes and the six schools, without the holy company there is no holy one. Taking the warmth of the Guru's teaching, the Gurmukh comes to know the holy company. Merging his awareness into the Word, he drinks the cup of love that cannot be drunk. Mind in delight, body grown slender, he lives in a love that has no body. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy sees the One no eye can see.

21 · Free in the Middle of the World's Glitter

The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company, staying free in the middle of maya. As the lotus lives in water, meditating on the sun, living as if in the sky; as the sandal, wound about by snakes, stays cool, calm and fragrant; so in the middle of the world the holy company, with awareness in the Word, lives in calm delight. Conquering both the way of yoga and the enjoyment of pleasures, they are free while still alive, never fooled and never dying. The Highest One, the perfect Brahm, the Guru-God — they put their hope in the One who needs no hope. The untold story of the Hidden One is made plain.
