Chapter 16

Var 16 · As the Seed, So the Fruit

The humble earth, water that seeks the low, the untouched lotus, the tree felled to ferry others, the boatman, the sandalwood, the sun — each teaches the Gurmukh selfless good, before the poem turns to the Creator who is beyond all reach.

1 · As the Seed, So the Fruit

sabh dūn nīvīn dharat hoi daragah andar milī vaḍāī | koī goḍai vāh hal ko mal mūtr kusūtr karāī | limb rasoī ko karai choā chandan pūj chaṛāī | jehā bījai so luṇai jehā bīu tehā phal pāī | guramukh sukh phal sahaj ghar āp gavāi na āp gaṇāī | jāgrat supan sukhopatī unaman magan rahai liv lāī | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad kamāī |1|

The earth, lowest of all, wins greatness in the Court. One person digs and ploughs it; another fouls it with dung and filth; one plasters it for a kitchen floor, another offers sandal and worship on it — and yet as you sow, so you harvest; as the seed is, so is the fruit. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the natural home: he loses himself and makes no show of himself. Awake, dreaming, or in deep sleep, he stays absorbed in delight, fixed in love. In the holy company he lives the Guru's Word.

2 · Learning From Water

dharatī andar jal vasai jal bahu raṅgīn rasīn milandā | jiun jiun koi chalāidā nīvān hoi nīvāṇ chalandā | dhupai tatā hoi kai chhāvain ṭhaṇḍhā hoi rahandā | nāvaṇ jīvadiān muiān pītai sānt santokh hovandā | niramal karadā mailiān nīvain saravar jāi ṭikandā | guramukh sukh phal bhāu bhau sahaj bairāg sadā vigasandā | pūraṇ paraupakār karandā |2|

Water lives inside the earth, mixing into many colours and tastes. However you channel it, so it flows, always going lower to the low. In the sun it grows warm, and in the shade it stays cool. Bathed in and drunk by the living and the dying alike, it brings peace and contentment. It cleans what is soiled, and settles low in the pool. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is love and awe, always blossoming in calm freedom, doing good to everyone, full measure.

3 · Detached Like the Lotus

jal vich kaval alipat hai saṅg dokh niradokh rahandā | rātī bhavar lubhāidā sītal hoi sugandh milandā | bhalake sūraj dhiān dhar paraphulat hoi milai hasandā | guramukh sukh phal sahaj ghar varatamān andar varatandā | lokāchārī lok vich ved vīchārī karam karandā | sāvadhān gur giān vich jīvan mukat jugat vicharandā | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad vasandā |3|

The lotus in the water is untouched, staying spotless in the middle of the muck around it. By night the bee is drawn in, and meeting the flower is cooled and perfumed; at dawn the lotus meditates on the sun and, opening, meets it smiling. So the Gurmukh, in the natural home of joy, lives in the middle of this present world: worldly among the worldly, doing his duties like a man well-read in the Veda, and yet always awake in the Guru's wisdom, moving in the way of one who is free while still alive. In the holy company the Guru's Word lives.

4 · Impartial Like the Tree

dharatī andar birakh hoi pahilon de jaṛ pair ṭikāī | upar jhūlai jhaṭulā ṭhaṇḍhī chhāun su thāun suhāī | pavaṇ pāṇī pālā sahai sir talavāiā nihachal jāī | phal de vaṭ vagāiān sir kalavat lai lohu tarāī | guramukh janam sakārathā paraupakārī sahaj subhāī | mitr na satr na mohu dhrohu samadarasī gur sabad samāī | sādhasaṅgat guramat vaḍiāī |4|

Becoming a tree in the earth, first it sets its feet down as roots. Above, its crown sways, a cool shade and a lovely place. It bears wind, water and cold, head hanging down, standing firm. It gives its fruit though it is pelted with sticks, and takes the saw on its head so it can ferry iron across the water. The Gurmukh's birth bears fruit, doing good in natural ease. Neither friend nor enemy, without clinging or deceit, seeing everyone alike, he merges into the Guru's Word. In the holy company is the glory of the Guru's wisdom.

5 · The True Guru is the Boatman

sāgar andar bohithā vich muhāṇā paraupakārī | bhār atharabaṇ ladīai lai vāpār chaṛhan vāpārī | sāir lahar na viāpaī at asagāh athāh apārī | bahale pūr laṅghāidā sahī salāmat pār utārī | dūṇe chauṇe damm hon lāhā lai lai kāj savārī | guramukh sukh phal sādhasaṅg bhavajal andar dutar tārī | jīvan mukat jugat niraṅkārī |5|

In the sea is a ship, and in it the good boatman. Great heavy loads are put aboard, and the traders climb on to trade. The sea's waves do not touch it, though the sea is vast, past measuring, without end. It ferries many passengers, and lands them safe and sound. Their money doubles and doubles again; taking their profit, their work is done. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company, ferrying people across the hard ocean of fear. This is the way of being free while still alive — the way of the Formless One.

6 · The Sandalwood

bāvan chandan birakh hoi vaṇakhaṇḍ andar vasai ujāṛī | pās nivās vaṇāsapat nihachal lāi uradh tap tāṛī | pavaṇ gavan sanabandh kar gandh sugandh ulās ughāṛī | aphal saphal samadaras hoi kare vaṇasapat chandan vāṛī | guramukh sukh phal sādhasaṅg patit punīt karai dehāṛī | auguṇ kīte guṇ karai kach pakāī upar vāṛī | nīr na ḍobai ag na sāṛī |6|

The sandal grows as a tree, living in the wilds of the forest grove. The plants beside it stand firm, as if upright in penance and deep stillness. Making friends with the passing wind, it opens its fragrance in glad welcome. Fruitless and fruitful alike, seeing them all the same, it turns the woodland into a sandal grove. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company, day by day making the fallen pure. It answers faults with goodness, ripening the unripe in its garden. Water cannot drown it, and fire cannot burn it.

7 · Giving Like the Sun

rāt anherī andhakār lakh karoṛī chamakan tāre | ghar ghar dīve bālīan par ghar takan chor chagāre | haṭ paṭaṇ gharabārīā de de tāk savan nar nāre | sūraj jot udot kar tāre tār anher nivāre | bandhan mukat karāidā nām dān isanān vichāre | guramukh sukh phal sādhasaṅg pasū paret patit nisatāre | paraupakārī gurū piāre |7|

On a dark night with no moon, millions of stars twinkle; lamps are lit in house after house, while thieves and robbers watch other people's homes; the shopkeepers and townsfolk bolt their doors, and men and women sleep. Then the sun rises in its light, dissolves the stars and drives off the dark. So it sets people free of their bonds, teaching the Name, the giving and the clean living. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company, saving even the beast, the ghost and the fallen. The Guru is dear, doing good to everyone.

8 · The Holy Company, the Swan Lake

mān sarovar ākhīai upar hans suvans vasande | motī māṇak mānasar chuṇ chuṇ hans amol chugande | khīr nīr niravārade laharīn andar phiran tarande | mān sarovar chhaḍ kai horat thāi na jāi bahande | guramukh sukh phal sādhasaṅg param hans gurasikh sohande | ik man ik dhiāide dūjai bhāi na jāi phirande | sabad surat liv alakh lakhande |8|

Call it Lake Mansarovar, and on it live the swans of noble breed. In that lake the swans pick out pearls and rubies, one by one, past all price. They part the milk from the water, swimming among the waves. Once they leave that lake, they will settle nowhere else. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company; and the Gursikhs, highest swans, are lovely there. With one mind they meditate on the One, and never wander off to love anything else. With awareness fixed in the Word, they see the One no eye can see.

9 · The Gurmukh, a Gold-Making Stone

pāras pathar ākhīai lukiā rahai na āp jaṇāe | viralā koi siñāṇadā khojī khoj lae so pāe | pāras paras aparas hoi asaṭ dhāt ik dhāt karāe | bārah vannī hoi kai kañchan mul amul vikāe | guramukh sukh phal sādhasaṅg sabad surat liv aghaṛ ghaṛāe | charaṇ saraṇ liv līṇ hoi sainsārī niraṅkārī bhāe | ghar bārī hoi nij ghar jāe |9|

It is called the gold-making stone, and it stays hidden and makes no show of itself. Rare is the one who knows it; the seeker who really seeks, finds it. Touched by that stone, what could not be touched turns pure, and eight metals are made one; refined again and again, the gold is sold, priced and yet past price. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company; awareness in the Word gives shape to the shapeless. Fixed in love at the shelter of the feet, the worldly one becomes the Formless One's own. Still a householder, he reaches his own true home.

10 · The Gurmukh, Highest of All

chintāmaṇ chintā harai kāmadhen kāmanān pujāe | phal phul dendā pārajāt ridh sidh nav nāth lubhāe | das avatār akār kar purakhārath kar nānv gaṇāe | guramukh sukh phal sādhasaṅg chār padārath sevā lāe | sabad surat liv piram ras akath kahāṇī kathī na jāe | pārabraham pūran braham bhagat vachhal hui achhal chhalāe | lekh alekh na kīmat pāe |10|

The wish-granting jewel drives away care, and the wish-granting cow fulfils desires; the wish-granting tree gives flower and fruit — and wealth-powers, miracle powers and the nine Nath yogis are drawn to them; God came down to earth ten times and, by His deeds, made those names known. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company, which sets the four great gifts to serve him. Awareness in the Word, the sweetness of love — the untold story cannot be told. The Highest One, the perfect Brahm, lover of His devotees, never fooled, outwits maya herself. It cannot be written down and cannot be priced.

11 · The Creator's Cup of Love

ik kavāu pasāu kar niraṅkār ākār baṇāiā | tol atol nā tolīai tul na tulādhār tolāiā | lekh alekh na likhīai aṅg na akhar lekh likhāiā | mul amul na molīai lakh padārath lavai na lāiā | bol abol na bolīai suṇ suṇ ākhaṇ ākh suṇāiā | agam athāhu agādh bodh ant na pārāvār na pāiā | kudarat kīm na jāṇīai kevaḍ kādar kit ghar āiā | guramukh sukhaphal sādhasaṅg sabad surat liv alakh lakhāiā | piram piālā ajar jarāiā |11|

With one Word the Formless One made form. He cannot be weighed; no balance can hold Him. He cannot be written; no letter and no line records Him. He cannot be priced and is not for sale; a hundred thousand treasures come nowhere near. He cannot be spoken; hearing and hearing, we tell only what we have heard. Past reaching, past measuring, of wisdom past measuring, without end and without shore. His power cannot be priced; how great the Creator is, and in what home does He live? The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company; awareness in the Word sees the unseen and carries the cup of love that cannot be carried.

12 · The Holy Company, the Realm of Truth

sādahu sabadahu bāharā akath kathā kiun jihabā jāṇai | usatat nindā bāharā kathanī badanī vich na āṇai | gandh saparas agocharā nās sās herat hairāṇai | varanahu chihanahu bāharā disaṭ adisaṭ na dhiān dhiṅāṇai | nirālamb avalamb viṇ dharat agās nivās viḍāṇai | sādhasaṅgat sachakhaṇḍ hai niraṅkār gur sabad siñāṇai | kudarat kādar no kurabāṇai |12|

Past taste and past words — how can the tongue know the untold story? Past praise and blame, it cannot be brought into speech. Past scent and touch, past the reach of nostril or breath — a wonder of wonders. Past colour and mark, seen and unseen, no meditation can grasp it by force. Resting on nothing, with nothing to rest on, it lives wonderfully between the earth and the sky. The holy company is the land of truth, where the Formless One is known through the Guru's Word. To the Creator's power I give myself.

13 · The Gurmukh's True Path

guramukh panth agamm hai jiu jal andar mīn chalandā | guramukh khoj alakh hai jiu paṅkhī āgās uḍandā | sādhasaṅgat raharās hai har chandaurī nagar vasandā | chār varan tambol ras piram piālai raṅg charandā | sabad surat liv līṇ hoi chandan vās nivās karandā | giān dhiān simaraṇ jugat kūñj kūram hans vans vadhandā | guramukh sukh phal alakh lakhandā |13|

The Gurmukh's path cannot be traced, like a fish moving through water. The Gurmukh's searching cannot be seen, like a bird flying in the sky. The holy company is the way, living in this make-believe city and making it real. Like the betel's colour on all four castes, the cup of love raises its own hue. Absorbed in awareness of the Word, he takes on the fragrance of sandal. Knowledge, meditation and remembrance are his way; like the line of swans, he grows in grace. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy sees the One no eye can see.

14 · God is Beyond Seeing

brahamādik vedān saṇai net net kar bhed na pāiā | mahādev avadhūt hoi namo namo kar dhiān na āiā | das avatār akār kar ekaṅkār na alakh lakhāiā | ridh sidh nidh nāth nau ād purakh ādes karāiā | sahas nānv lai sahas mukh simaraṇ saṅkh na nāun dhiāiā | lomas tap kar sādhanā haumai sādh na sādh sadāiā | chir jīvaṇ bahu haṇḍhaṇā guramukh sukhuphal pal na chakhāiā | kudarat andar bharam bhulāiā |14|

Brahma with the Vedas, saying 'not this, not this', never found His secret. Mahadev, turned hermit, bowing again and again, never won the sight of Him in his trance. God came down ten times, and still the Creator's unseen was not seen. Wealth-powers, miracle powers, treasure and the nine Nath yogis bow before the First Being. Taking a thousand names with a thousand mouths, they never reached the count of His Name. Lomas did penance and hard discipline, and yet by conquering pride nobody was called a saint. Long-lived and much-enduring — and yet, without the Gurmukh's fruit of joy, they never tasted it for an instant. Inside His own power they are lost in doubt.

15 · The Stainless One Inside the World's Black Paint

guramukh sukh phal sādhasaṅg bhagat vachhal hoi vas gat āiā | kāraṇ karate vas hai sādhasaṅgat vich kare karāiā | pārabraham pūran braham sādhasaṅgat vich bhāṇā bhāiā | rom rom vich rakhion kar brahamaṇḍ karoṛ samāiā | bīahu kar bisathār vaṛ phal andar phir bīu vasāiā | apiu pīaṇ ajar jaraṇ āp gavāi na āp jaṇāiā | añjan vich nirañjan pāiā |15|

The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the holy company; the lover of His devotees comes into their keeping. The cause lies in the Creator's power, and yet in the holy company He does it and has it done. The Highest One, the perfect Brahm, is pleased in the holy company by their love. In every hair He kept millions of universes. From one seed He spread the banyan, and set the seed back inside the fruit. Drinking what cannot be drunk, carrying what cannot be carried, losing himself, he makes no show of himself. Inside the world's black eye-paint he found the Stainless One.

16 · Waheguru, Beyond the Beyond

In glory upon glory of fragrance, a hundred thousand cannot know His glory; a hundred thousand great ones cannot tell a seed's-worth of His greatness; in praise upon praise, one moment's praise leaves them astounded; in wonder upon wonder, a wonder of wondrous marvels; in joy upon joy, His joy is past all joy; the state of the Hidden One is furthest past reaching — the untold story is told as a saying. A hundred thousand 'accepted' ones are past the reach of the One who accepts.

17 · Unreachable Beyond the Unreachable

Past reaching, past all reaching, most beyond reach, He is proclaimed; unseen past the unseen, a hundred thousand times unseen, He is meditated on; past the far side of the boundless, that boundlessness is loved; past sensing, past all sensing, He goes into what cannot be sensed. The Highest One, the perfect Brahm, in the holy company is called past measuring. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the sweetness of love; the lover of His devotees, never fooled, outwits maya. Climbing past the twenties into the twenty-first, He raises them up.

18 · The True Guru Made the Unseen Seen

The Highest One, the perfect Brahm, the Formless, made Himself into form. The state of the Hidden One, of wisdom past measuring, became the Guru's image and made the unseen seen. In the holy company, the land of truth, the lover of His devotees, never fooled, outwits maya. The four castes became one caste, bowing to the First Being. The root of meditation is the sight of the Guru; and among the six schools, that sight came. He, of Himself, makes no show of Himself.

Coming to the shelter of the lotus feet, Guru and Sikh meet in the holy company. Looking at them with the nectar-glance, He gives the inner eye and lays them at the Guru's feet. The dust of the feet is the mark on the forehead, wiping out the record of doubt and deed. Sipping the water from those feet, the disease of pride and of seeing two is gone. Falling at the feet, becoming their dust, they reach the natural home of freedom while still alive. Becoming a bee at the lotus feet, they are drawn in by the pollen of bliss. The root of worship is the True Guru's feet; nothing else comes anywhere near. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the Guru's shelter.

Gather a hundred thousand law-books, memory-books and Vedas, the Mahabharat and the Ramayan; the essence of countless Gitas and Bhagvats, astrology and medicine, all this passing show; the fourteen sciences and all of music, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh together; countless sages — Sanak and Narad, Suk and Vyas, and Shesh the serpent, ever new; all their knowledge, meditation and remembrance, their schools and castes, guru and many disciples — and above them all, the perfect True Guru is the Guru of gurus, the root sacred word, whose Word gives comfort. The Guru's Word is the untold story — 'not this, not this' — and the way to it is to bow, and bow again. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is found in the still hour before dawn.

The four great gifts are named, and a hundred thousand goods are servants of His Command; a hundred thousand wealth-powers, miracle powers and treasures serve Him, and a hundred thousand wish-granting cows graze in His herd; a hundred thousand gold-making stones, a hundred thousand wish-granting trees fruiting in gardens; a hundred thousand wish-granting jewels of thought, a hundred thousand life-giving medicines offered up; a hundred thousand jewels and jewel-mines, all treasures and all fruits meditate on Him; a hundred thousand devotions and devotees do their miracles, pleased and pleasing. Awareness in the Word, the holy company, carrying the cup of love that cannot be carried — by the Guru's grace they meet the true company.
