1 · The Empty Conch
sāgar agam athāhu math chaudah ratan amol kaḍhāe | sasīar sāraṅg dhaṇakh mad kausatak lachh dhanantar pāe | ārambhā kāmadheṇ lai pārijāt asv amiu pīāe | airāpat gaj saṅkh bikh dev dānav mil vaṇḍ divāe | māṇak motī hīriān bahu mule sabh ko varusāe | saṅkh samundrahun sakhaṇā dhāhān de de roi suṇāe | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ gur upades na ridai vasāe | nihaphal ahilā janam gavāe |1|
The ocean, past measuring and past reaching, was churned, and fourteen priceless jewels were drawn out of it: the moon, the great bow, wine and the shining gem, and a hundred thousand healing cures; the wish-granting cow, the wish-granting tree, the horse, and the nectar to drink; the great white elephant, the conch, and the poison — and the gods and demons shared them out. Rubies, pearls and diamonds of great price were given to all. Yet the conch, though it came out of that same ocean, stays empty — it cries aloud, and only wails. So a person who hears the Guru's Word in the holy company and does not set the teaching inside himself wastes his whole life for nothing.
2 · The Manmukh and the Frog
niramal nīr suhāvaṇā subhar saravar kaval phulande | rūp anūp sarūp at gandh sugandh hoi mahakande | bhavarān vāsā vañjh vaṇ khojah eko khoj lahande | lobh lubhat makarand ras dūr disantar āi milande | sūraj gagan udot hoi saravar kaval dhiān dharande | ḍaḍḍū chikaṛ vās hai kaval siñāṇ na māṇ sakande | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ gur upades na rahat rahande | masatak bhāg jinhān de mande |2|
Clear and lovely is the water, the brimming pool where lotuses bloom, of matchless shape and beauty, breathing out sweet fragrance. The bees live in the reed-grove, and searching, they find that one flower; drawn by the sweetness of its pollen, they come from far countries to meet it; and when the sun rises in the sky, the pool's lotuses fix their gaze on it. But the frog, living in that same mud, can neither know the lotus nor enjoy it. So those who hear the Guru's Word in the holy company and whose luck is bad do not keep the teaching.
3 · The Heron's False Devotion
tīrath purab sañjog log chahu kuṇḍān de āi juṛande | chār varan chhia darasanā nām dān isanān karande | jap tap sañjam hom jag varat nem kar ved suṇande | giān dhiān simaraṇ jugat devī dev sathān pujande | bagā bage kapaṛe kar samādh aparādh nivande | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ guramukh panth na chāl chalande | kapaṭ sanehī phal na lahande |3|
At a holy place, on a festival day, people gather from all four directions; the four castes and the six schools chant the Name, hand out their alms and take the ritual bath; they keep penance, hard discipline, fire-offerings and fasts, and hear the Veda; in knowledge, meditation and remembrance they worship at the shrines of gods and goddesses; herons in white feathers, they sit as if in a trance while they bow to sin. Hearing the Guru's Word in the holy company, they still do not walk the Gurmukh path. The false-hearted friend gains no fruit.
4 · The Unworthy
sāvaṇ vaṇ harīāvale vuṭhai sukai ak javāhā | tripat babīhe svānt būnd sip andar motī omāhā | kadalī vaṇahu kapūr hoi kalar kaval na hoi samāhā | bisīar muh kālakūṭ hoi dhāt supātr kupātr durāhā | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ sānt na āvai ubhai sāhā | guramukh sukh phal piramaras manamukh badarāhī badarāhā | manamukh ṭoṭā guramukh lāhā |4|
In the rainy month the woods turn green, but in that same rain the bitter milkweed and the camel-thorn wither. The rain-bird is satisfied by the one raindrop it waits for, and in the shell a pearl swells with longing. The banana grove turns to cooling camphor, but in barren salt soil no lotus grows. In the snake's mouth that same raindrop turns to deadly poison — the metal shows itself worthy or worthless. So a person may hear the Guru's Word in the holy company and still find no peace, and sigh in his unrest. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the sweetness of love; the manmukh goes from a bad road to a worse one. Loss for the manmukh, profit for the Gurmukh.
5 · A Lesson to the Proud
vaṇavaṇ vich vaṇāsapat iko dharatī iko pāṇī | raṅg biraṅgī phul phal sād sugandh sanabandh viḍāṇī | uchā simmal jhaṇṭulā nihaphal chīl chaṛhai asamāṇī | jaladā vāns vaḍhāīai vañjhulīān vajan bebāṇī | chandan vās vaṇāsapat vās rahai niragandh ravāṇī | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ ridai na vasai abhāg parāṇī | haumai andar bharam bhulāṇī |5|
In grove upon grove there are plants, one earth and one water; flowers and fruits of many colours, tastes and scents, wonderfully bound together; the tall silk-cotton, a bushy tree, and the fruitless pine climbing to the sky; the burning bamboo is cut down, and its flutes sound out in the wilderness; the sandal's fragrance perfumes the plants around it, but the pine and the bamboo take none of it and stay scentless. So a person hears the Guru's Word in the holy company, and still the Word does not live in his unlucky heart. In pride he wanders about, lost in doubt.
6 · The Owl
sūraj jot udot kar chānaṇ karai aner gavāe | kirat virat jag varatamān sabh sanabandhan mukat karāe | pas paṅkhī miragāvalī bhākhiā bhāu alāu suṇāe | bāṅgān buragū siṅīān nād bād nīsāṇ vajāe | ghughū sujh na sujhaī jāi ujāṛī jhath valāe | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ bhāu bhagat man bhau na vasāe | manamukh birathā janam gavāe |6|
The sun, rising in its light, makes the day and drives off the dark; the world's work and doings go on, and it loosens every bond; beasts, birds and the herds of deer call out in their love; the call to prayer, the horns and the pipes sound their notes and drums. But the owl sees nothing; it goes off to the wasteland and passes its time there. So the manmukh hears the Guru's Word in the holy company, and still keeps no love, no devotion and no awe in his mind. He wastes his birth for nothing.
7 · The Garlic in the Assembly
chand chakor parīt hai jagamag jot udot karandā | kirakh birakhihui saphal phal sītal sānt amiu varasandā | nār bhatār piār kar sihajā bhog sañjog baṇandā | sabhanān rāt milāvaṛā chakavī chakavā mil vichhuṛandā | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ kapaṭ saneh na theh lahandā | majalas āvai lasaṇ khāi gandī vās machāe gandā | dūjā bhāu mandī hūn mandā |7|
The moon and the partridge are in love; the moon's shimmering light shines bright; on tree and field the fruit ripens, and it rains down cool, calm nectar; wife and husband love each other, and the bed is set for their meeting; all creatures meet at night, but the pair of sheldrakes meet only to part again. So the false-hearted hear the Guru's Word in the holy company and find no ground to stand on. They are like someone who comes to the gathering having eaten garlic and spreads a foul smell around: loving anything but God is the worst of the worst.
8 · The Ladle in the Feast
khaṭ ras miṭh ras mel kai chhatīh bhojan hon rasoī | jevaṇivār jivālīai chār varan chhia darasan loī | tripat bhugat kar hoi jis jihabā sāu siñāṇai soī | kaṛachhī sāu nā sambhalai chhatīh biñjan vich sañjoī | ratī ratak nā ralai ratanān andar hār paroī | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ gur upades āves na hoī | kapaṭ saneh na daragah ḍhoī |8|
Blending the six tastes and the sweet, thirty-six dishes are cooked; guests are fed, of all four castes and six schools; and the one who eats his fill knows the flavour on his tongue. But the ladle knows no taste, though it is set among all thirty-six dishes; and the false bead does not belong among the jewels strung on the necklace. So a person hears the Guru's Word in the holy company and still feels no warmth for the teaching. The false-hearted find no place in the Court.
9 · The Elephant, the Bitter Gourd
nadīān nāle vāhaṛe gaṅg saṅg mil gaṅg huvande | aṭhasaṭh tīrath senvade devī devā sev karande | lok ved guṇ giān vich patit udhāraṇ nāu suṇande | hasatī nīr nhavālīan bāhar nikal chhār chhaṇande | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ gur upades na chit dharande | tumme ammrit siñjīai bījai ammrit phal na phalande | kapaṭ saneh na seh pujande |9|
Rivers, streams and brooks meet the Ganga and become the Ganga; they serve all sixty-eight holy places, and worship gods and goddesses; in folk stories, in the Veda, in goodness and knowledge they hear the Name that lifts up the fallen; but elephants bathed in the water come out and sift dust over themselves. So they hear the Guru's Word in the holy company and never set the teaching in their minds. Water the bitter gourd with nectar, and it still bears no sweet fruit. The false-hearted never reach the depth of love.
10 · The Barren Queen
rājai de sau rāṇīān sejai āvai vāro vārī | sabhe hī paṭarāṇīān rāje ikadūn ik piārī | sabhanā rājā rāvaṇā sundar mandar sej savārī | santat sabhanān rāṇīān ik adhakā saṇḍh vichārī | dos na rāje rāṇīai pūrab likhat na miṭai likhārī | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ gur upades na man uradhārī | karamahīṇ duramat hitakārī |10|
A king has a hundred queens, and comes to their beds in turn; every one of them is a chief queen, each dearer to the king than the last; all are enjoyed by the king in lovely rooms on decorated beds; all the queens bear children, except one, who is barren, and is pitied. No fault lies with the king or with the queen — what was written long ago cannot be rubbed out. So a person hears the Guru's Word in the holy company and still does not set the teaching in his mind. The unlucky one loves only his own bad thinking.
11 · The Gold-Making Stone and the Stone
asaṭ dhāt ik dhāt hoi sabh ko kañchan ākh vakhāṇai | rūp anūp sarūp hoi mul amul pañch paravāṇai | pathar pāras parasīai pāras hoi na kul abhimāṇai | pāṇī andar saṭīai taṛ bhaṛ ḍubai bhār bhulāṇai | chit kaṭhor na bhijaī rahai nikor ghaṛai bhann jāṇai | agī andar phuṭ jāi aharaṇ ghaṇ andar hairāṇai | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ gur upades na andar āṇai | kapaṭ sanehu na hoi dhiṅāṇai |11|
Eight metals made into one metal — everyone calls it gold; of matchless shape and beauty, priced and yet priceless, it is accepted among the elders. But a stone touched to the gold-making stone becomes no such stone, being proud of being a stone; thrown into the water it sinks with a splash, dragged down by its own weight; hard-hearted, it never soaks through but stays dry, and breaks the pitcher when it can; in the fire it bursts, and lies astonished on the anvil under the hammer. So a person hears the Guru's Word in the holy company and never brings the teaching inside. False love never comes by force.
12 · The Swan and the Crow
māṇak motī mānasar niramal nīr suthāun suhandā | hans vans nihachal matī saṅgat paṅgat sāth baṇandā | māṇak motī chog chug māṇ mahat ānand vadhandā | kāun nithāu nināu hai hansān vich udās hovandā | bhakh abhakh abhakh bhakh vaṇ vaṇ andar bharam bhavandā | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ tan andar man thir na rahandā | bajar kapāṭ na khulhai jandā |12|
Pearls and rubies lie in Lake Mansarovar, in the spotless water of a lovely place; the line of swans, steady of mind, forms its company and its row; picking pearls and rubies for food, their honour, their greatness and their bliss increase. But the crow, with no place and no name, sits ill at ease among the swans; it takes the foul for food and the pure for foul, wandering grove to grove in doubt. So a person hears the Guru's Word in the holy company, and still his mind will not stay still inside his body. The heavy shutters do not open; the lock stays shut.
13 · The Sick Man
rogī māṇas hoi kai phiradā bāhale vaid puchhandā | kachai vaid na jāṇanī vedan dārū rogī sandā | horo dārū rog hor hoi pachāiṛ dukh sahandā | āvai vaid suvaid ghar dārū dasai rog lahandā | sañjam rahai na khāi path khaṭā miṭhā sāu chakhandā | dos na dārū vaid no viṇ sañjam nit rog vadhandā | kapaṭ sanehī hoi kai sādhasaṅgat vich āi bahandā | duramat dūjai bhāi pachandā |13|
A man falls ill and wanders about, asking many doctors; the raw ones do not know either his pain or its cure; one names a disease, another a medicine — treated wrongly, he suffers the pain; then the good doctor comes to the house, names the cure, and the disease lifts; but the man keeps no restraint, breaks his diet, and tastes the sour and the sweet again. No blame to the medicine or to the doctor — without restraint the disease grows worse every day. So a false-hearted person comes and sits down in the holy company. In bad thinking, loving anything but God, he rots.
14 · The Donkey and the Perfume
choā chandan med lai mel kapūr kathūrī sandā | sabh sugandh ralāikai gur gāndhī aragajā karandā | majalas āvai sāhibān guṇ andar hoi guṇ mahakandā | gadahā dehī khaulīai sār na jāṇai narak bhavandā | sādhasaṅgat gurasabad suṇ bhāubhagat hiradai na dharandā | annhān akhī hondaī bolā kannān suṇ na suṇandā | badhā chaṭī jāi bharandā |14|
Taking distilled sandal-oil, blending it with camphor and musk, mixing in every scent, the perfumer makes the finest perfume; brought to the gathering of the great, goodness among goodness, it breathes out its fragrance. But smear it on a donkey's body, and the donkey knows nothing of its worth, and wanders off to the filth. So the false-hearted hear the Guru's Word in the holy company and set no love and no devotion in the heart. He has eyes and is blind; he has ears and does not hear. Tied up, he goes off to pay the fine.
15 · Silk and Blanket
dhote hovan ujale pāṭ paṭambar khare amole | raṅg biraṅgī raṅgīan sabhe raṅg suraṅg aḍole | sāhib lai lai painhade rūp raṅg ras vans nikole | sobhāvant suhāvaṇe chaj achār sīgār vichole | kālā kambal ujalā hoi na dhote raṅg nirole | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ jhākai andar nīr virole | kapaṭ sanehī ujaṛ khole |15|
Washed, the silks and fine robes grow bright and priceless; dyed in many shades, every colour holding fast and never fading; the great put them on and wear them, of matchless beauty, colour and grace; lovely and well made, of good cut and ornament, they grace the gathering. But the black blanket does not turn white, however much it is washed and dyed in a true colour. So the false-hearted hear the Guru's Word in the holy company, and only peer about and churn the water, and find nothing. The false-hearted are waste and ruin.
16 · The Barren Sesame
khetai andar jammikai sabh dūn ucchā hoi vikhāle | būṭ vaḍā kar phailadā hoi chuhachuhā āp samāle | khet saphal hoi lāvaṇī chhuṭan til būāṛ nirāle | nihaphal sāre khet vich jiu saravāṛ kamād vichāle | sādhasaṅgat gur sabad suṇ kapaṭ sanehu karan betāle | nihaphal janam akārathā halat palat hovan muh kāle | jamapur jam jandār havāle |16|
Springing up in the field, it stands taller than everything else to show itself off; growing into a big plant, spreading, lush and green, it guards itself. But when the field is ripe for cutting, the barren sesame stalks are thrown aside; fruitless in the whole field, like the reed among the sugarcane. So they hear the Guru's Word in the holy company, and the cruel ones cling to false love. Their birth bears no fruit and is wasted; here and hereafter their faces are blackened. In Death's city they are handed over to Death's tormentors.
17 · The Shining Bronze

Bright and gleaming bronze — but once someone has eaten from the dish, it is defiled; the defilement is scoured off with ash and washed in Ganga water; the outside is cleaned by washing, but the blackness inside shows itself at last; foul in mind and foul in body, he is spat on, struck on the mouth, and wails. So the false-hearted hear the Guru's Word in the holy company and only talk. Talk never fills anyone; break sugar into bits, and he still tastes no sweetness. He does not eat the butter — he only churns water.
18 · Castor and Oleander

Among the trees are the bad trees, the castor and the oleander, growing all around; the castor bears its castor-pods, and inside the fruit are mottled seeds; it does not last, having no real root, and is pulled up by the first squall; buds come out on the oleander, showing foul in its bad nature; red as a poppy outside, white within, and split in two. So he hears the Guru's Word in the holy company and floats about on the ocean, tossed by his own reckoning. False love is ash and a blackened face.
19 · The Milkweed Locust and the Manmukh

In the woods the plants bear fruit, sweet in taste and scent and fragrance; mangoes always lovely in fruit, peaches, apples and pomegranates ripening; grapes, citron, black plum, mulberry and date to delight in; wild berries in plenty, bananas and walnuts forming. But the milkweed locust likes none of them, leaving nectar-fruit to live on the bitter milkweed; put a leech to the udder, and it drinks no milk but only foul blood. So they hear the Guru's Word in the holy company and thrash about in their own reckoning. False love takes no root in the ground.

Frogs, herons, empty conches, a hundred thousand milkweeds and camel-thorns, black snakes; silk-cotton trees, owls, sheldrakes, ladles, elephants, a hundred thousand barren queens; stones, crows, many sick men, blankets black as a donkey; bronze dishes, barren sesame, a hundred thousand milkweed locusts, castor and mottled bitter gourd; and the oleander bud, said to be nothing but fault — all of these are dreadful in my own body too. So they hear the Guru's Word in the holy company and never set the teaching in the heart. Cursed is the life of the faithless and the cruel.

A hundred thousand gossips, a hundred thousand faithless ones, dark and cruel, a hundred thousand false to the salt they ate; betrayers of their masters, the ungrateful, thieves and adulterers, a hundred thousand of bad name; killers of Brahmins, of cows and of kin, breakers of trust, a thousand debtors; the false, the hiders of the Guru, a hundred thousand sinners, a hundred thousand of ill repute; many offenders and fallen ones, a hundred thousand vicious, wretched and ill-named; a hundred thousand hypocrites and cheats, a hundred thousand devils bowing in greeting. You see it, and I deny it. I am the deceitful one; You are the Knower of hearts. And yet You lift up the fallen — that is the Master's own nature.
