har kas z shauk tū kadam aza sar sākhat bar nahu tabak charakh alam sar afarākhat shud āmadanasha mubārik rafatan ham goyā āṇ kas ki rāh hakk rā bishanākhat | 1 |
Everyone, in longing for You, set out walking on his own head, and planted his flag above the nine heavens. Blessed is his coming into the world, and blessed too his going — Goya says: the one who has truly known the Lord.

kūr asat har āṇ dīdā ki hakk rā nabhashanākhat īṇ umar girāṇ māyā ba-ġafalat darabākhat ū girīāṇ kunāṇ āmad ba-hasarat murad afasos darīṇ āmad shud kāre nabhasākhat | 2 |
Blind is every eye that has not known the Eternal; it wasted this precious life in heedlessness. He came into the world weeping and left it still yearning, his hopes unfulfilled — alas, in all his coming and going he bettered nothing.
ਈਣ ਚਸ਼ਮਿ ਤੂ ਖ਼ਾਨਾ ਦਾਰਿ ਜਾਨਾਨਸਤ ਈਣ ਤਖ਼ਤਿ ਵਜੂਦਿ ਮਸਨਦਿ ਸੁਲਤਾਨਸਤ ਹਰ ਬੂਅਲਹਵਸੇ ਬਸੂਇ ਊ ਰਾਹ ਨ ਬੁਰਦ ਕਿ ਈਣ ਰਾਹ ਤਅੱਲਕਿ ਮੰਜ਼ਲਿ ਮਰਦਾਨਸਤ ॥ ੩ ॥
īṇ chasham tū khānā dār jānānasat īṇ takhat vajūd masanad sulatānasat har būalahavase basūi ū rāh na burad ki īṇ rāh taallak mañzal maradānasat | 3 |
This eye of yours is the home of the Beloved; your very being is the seat of His royal throne. No one lost in greed and lust can find the way to Him — for this road belongs only to the brave and the true.
ਹਰ ਦਿਲ ਕਿ ਬਰਾਹਿ ਰਾਸਤ ਜਾਨਾਣ ਸ਼ੁਦਾ ਅਸਤ ਤਹਿਕੀਕ ਬਿਦਾਣ ਕਿ ਐਨਿ ਜਾਨਾਣ ਸ਼ੁਦਾ ਅਸਤ ਯੱਕ ਜ਼ੱਰਾ ਜ਼ਿ ਫ਼ੈਜ਼ਿ ਰਹਿਮਤਸ਼ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨੀਸਤ ਨੱਕਾਸ ਦਰੂਨਿ ਨਕਸ਼ ਪਿਨਹਾਣ ਸ਼ੁਦਾ ਅਸਤ ॥ ੪ ॥
har dil ki barāh rāsat jānāṇ shudā asat tahikīk bidāṇ ki ain jānāṇ shudā asat yakk zarrā z faiz rahimatasha khālī nīsat nakkās darūn nakasha pinahāṇ shudā asat | 4 |
Every heart that has become one with the Beloved — know for certain, it has become the very self of the Beloved. Then not a single speck is empty of His grace; the Painter has hidden Himself within His own picture.
ਈਣ ਆਮਦੋ ਰਫ਼ਤ ਜੁਜ਼ ਦਮੇ ਬੇਸ਼ ਨਬੂਦ ਹਰ ਜਾ ਕਿ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕੁਨੇਮ ਜੁਜ਼ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ ਨਬੂਦ ਮਾਣ ਜਾਨਿਬਿ ਗ਼ੈਰ ਚੂੰ ਂਨਿਗਾਹ ਬਿਕੁਨੇਮ ਚੂੰ ਗ਼ੈਰ ਤੂ ਹੀਚ ਕਸੇ ਪਸੋ ਪੇਸ਼ ਨਬੂਦ ॥ ੫ ॥
īṇ āmado rafat juza dame besha nabūd har jā ki nazar kunem juza khesha nabūd māṇ jānib ġair chūn nnigāh bikunem chūn ġair tū hīch kase paso pesha nabūd | 5 |
This coming and going is no more than a breath; wherever I look, I see nothing but my own Self. How could I ever turn my gaze toward another, when there is none but You, before me or behind?
ਹਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਕੂ ਤਾਲਿਬਿ ਮੌਲਾ ਬਾਸ਼ਦ ਦਰ ਹਰ ਦੋ ਜਹਾਣ ਰੁਤਬਾ-ਅੰਸ਼ ਊਲਾ ਬਾਸ਼ਦ ਗੋਯਾ ਦੋ ਜਹਾਣ ਰਾ ਬ-ਜੌਏ ਬਿ-ਸਤਾਨੰਦ ਮਜਨੂੰਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੈ ਆਸ਼ਕਿ ਲੈਲਾ ਬਾਸ਼ਦ ॥ ੬ ॥
har bandā kū tālib maulā bāshad dar har do jahāṇ rutabā-ansha ūlā bāshad goyā do jahāṇ rā ba-jaue bi-satānand majanūnn tū kai āshak lailā bāshad | 6 |
Every servant who seeks the Lord holds the highest rank in both worlds. Goya says: they would give both worlds for a single grain of barley — when will I, Your Majnun, become truly Your lover?
ਦਰ ਦਹਿਰ ਕਿ ਮਰਦਾਨਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਆਮਦਾ ਅੰਦ ਬਰ ਗ਼ੁਮ-ਸ਼ੁਦਗਾਨਿ ਰਹਿਨੁਮਾ ਆਮਦਾ ਅੰਦ ਗੋਯਾ ਅਗਰ ਈਂ ਚਸ਼ਮਿ ਤੂ ਮੁਸ਼ਤਾਕਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਅਸਤ ਮਰਦਾਨਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ-ਨੁਮਾ ਆਮਦਾ ਅੰਦ ॥ ੭ ॥
dar dahir ki maradān khudā āmadā and bar ġuma-shudagān rahinumā āmadā and goyā agar īn chasham tū mushatāk khudā asat maradān khudā khudā-numā āmadā and | 7 |
When men of God appear in the world, they come as guides to lead the lost back to the road. Goya says: if your eye longs for the Almighty, know that the men of God come only to reveal Him.
ਦਰ ਮਜ਼ਹਬਿ ਮਾ ਗ਼ੈਰ-ਪਰਸਤੀ ਨ ਕੁਨੰਦ ਸਰ ਤਾ ਬਕਦਮ ਬਹੋਸ਼ ਓ ਮਸਤੀ ਨ ਕੁਨੰਦ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਲਿ ਨਸ਼ਵੰਦ ਯਕ ਦਮ ਅਜ਼ ਯਾਦਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਦੀਗਰ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਅਜ਼ ਬੁਲੰਦੋ ਪਸਤੀ ਨ ਕੁਨੰਦ ॥ ੮ ॥
dar mazahab mā ġaira-parasatī na kunand sar tā bakadam bahosha o masatī na kunand ġāfal nashavand yak dam aza yād khudā dīgar sukhan aza bulando pasatī na kunand | 8 |
In our faith, none worships any other but the One; they are never wanton, but wakeful, head to foot. Not for a single breath are they heedless of God — and they will not stoop to talk of the high-born and the low.
ਯੱਕ ਜ਼ੱਰਾ ਅਗਰ ਸ਼ੌਕਿ ਇਲਾਹੀ ਬਾਸ਼ਦ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਕਿ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਬਾਸ਼ਦ ਗੋਯਾ-ਸਤ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮਿ ਮੁਰਸ਼ਦਿ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ ਈਣ ਖ਼ਤ ਨ ਮੁਹਤਾਜਿ ਗਵਾਹੀ ਬਾਸ਼ਦ ॥ ੯ ॥
yakk zarrā agar shauk ilāhī bāshad bihatar ki hazār bādashāhī bāshad goyā-sat ġulām murashad khesha īṇ khat na muhatāj gavāhī bāshad | 9 |
If one has even a speck of longing for God, it is worth more than a thousand kingdoms. Goya says: I am the slave of my own true Guru — and this pledge needs no witness to confirm it.
ਹਰ ਕਸ ਬ-ਜਹਾ ਨਸ਼ਵੋ ਨੁਮਾ ਮੀ ਖ਼ਾਹਦ ਅਸਪੋ ਸ਼ੁਤਰੋ ਫ਼ੀਲੋ ਤਿਲਾ ਮੀ ਖ਼ਾਹਦ ਹਰ ਕਸ ਜ਼ਿ ਬਰਾਇ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ ਚੀਜ਼ੇ ਮੀ ਖ਼ਾਹਦ ਗੋਯਾ ਜ਼ਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਯਾਦਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਮੀ ਖ਼ਾਹਦ ॥ ੧੦ ॥
har kas ba-jahā nashavo numā mī khāhad asapo shutaro fīlo tilā mī khāhad har kas z barāi khesha chīze mī khāhad goyā z khudā yād khudā mī khāhad | 10 |
Everyone in the world wants to grow and prosper — horses, camels, elephants, gold. Each longs for something for himself; but Goya asks of God only the remembrance of God.
ਪੁਰ ਗਸ਼ਤਾ ਜ਼ਿ ਸਰ ਤਾ ਬ-ਕਦਮ ਨੂਰ-ਉਲ-ਨੂਰ ਆਈਨਾ ਕਿ ਦਰ ਵੈਨ ਬਵਦ ਹੀਚ ਕਸੂਰ ਤਹਿਕੀਕ ਬਿਦਾਣ ਜ਼ਿ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲਾਣ ਦੂਰ ਬਵਦ ਊ ਦਰ ਦਿਲਿ ਆਰਿਫ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਜ਼ਹੂਰ ॥ ੧੧ ॥
pur gashatā z sar tā ba-kadam nūra-ula-nūr āīnā ki dar vain bavad hīch kasūr tahikīk bidāṇ z ġāfilāṇ dūr bavad ū dar dil ārifa karadā zahūr | 11 |
My Guru is filled, head to foot, with light upon light — a mirror without a single flaw. Know for certain, he keeps far from the heedless, and shows himself only in the hearts of the pure.
ਈਣ ਉਮਰਿ ਗਿਰਾਣ-ਮਾਯਾ ਕਿ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਸ਼ਵਦ ਈਣ ਖ਼ਾਨਾਇ ਵੀਰਾਣ ਬ-ਚਿਹ ਆਬਾਦ ਸ਼ਵਦ ਤਾ ਮੁਰਸ਼ਦਿ ਕਾਮਿਲ ਨਦਿਹਦ ਦਸਤ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੋਯਾ ਦਿਲਿ ਗ਼ਮਗੀਨ ਤੂ ਚੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਦ ਬਵਦ ॥ ੧੨ ॥
īṇ umar girāṇa-māyā ki barabād shavad īṇ khānāi vīrāṇ ba-chih ābād shavad tā murashad kāmil nadihad dasat braham goyā dil ġamagīn tū chūn shād bavad | 12 |
This priceless life is being wasted for nothing — how shall this ruined house be made a home again? Only when a perfect Guru takes your hand, Goya — only then can your grieving heart be turned to joy.
ਦਿਲਿ ਜ਼ਾਲਮਿ ਬ-ਕਸਦਿ ਕੁਸ਼ਤਨਿ ਮਾ-ਸਤ ਦਿਲਿ ਮਜ਼ਲੂਮਿ ਮਨ ਬਸੂਇ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਸਤ ਊ ਦਰੀਣ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਤਾਣ ਬਮਾ ਚਿਹ ਕੁਨਦ ਮਾ ਦਰੀਣ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਤਾ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਚਿਹ ਕੁਨਦ ॥ ੧੩ ॥
dil zālam ba-kasad kushatan mā-sat dil mazalūm man basūi khudā sat ū darīṇ fikar tāṇ bamā chih kunad mā darīṇ fikar tā khudā chih kunad | 13 |
The tyrant's heart is bent on our undoing; my helpless heart turns only toward God. He frets over what he will do to us — and we only wonder what God will do.
ਦਰ ਹਾਸਿਲਿ ਉਮਰ ਆਣ ਚਿਹ ਮਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾ ਏਮ ਦਰ ਹਰ ਦੋ-ਜਹਾਣ ਯਾਦਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾ ਏਮ ਈਣ ਹਸਤੀਏ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਨ ਬਲਾ ਬੂਦ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ਅਜ਼ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ ਗੁਜ਼ਸ਼ਤੇਮ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾ ਏਮ ॥ ੧੪ ॥
dar hāsil umar āṇ chih mā yāfatā em dar har do-jahāṇ yād khudā yāfatā em īṇ hasatīe kheshatan balā būd azīm aza khesha guzashatem khudā yāfatā em | 14 |
What did we gain from this priceless life? In both worlds, the remembrance of God. This self of ours was a great affliction; when we let it go, we found the Lord.
ਅਜ਼ ਖ਼ਾਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਤੂ ਤੂਤੀਆ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾਏਮ ਕਜ਼ ਦੌਲਤਿ ਆਣ ਨਸ਼ਵੋ ਨੁਮਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾਏਮ ਮਾ ਸਿਜਦਾ ਬਰ ਰੂਇ ਗ਼ੈਰ ਦੀਗਰ ਨਭਕੁਨੇਮ ਦਰ ਖ਼ਾਨਾਇ ਦਿਲ ਨਕਸ਼ਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾਏਮ ॥ ੧੫ ॥
aza khāk dar tū tūtīā yāfatāem kaza daulat āṇ nashavo numā yāfatāem mā sijadā bar rūi ġair dīgar nabhakunem dar khānāi dil nakash khudā yāfatāem | 15 |
From the dust of Your door we gained our healing balm, and by that wealth we grew and flourished. We have bowed before no other face; within the house of the heart we found the image of God.
ਗੋਯਾ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਅਜ਼ ਯਾਦਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾਏਮ ਈਣ ਜਾਮਿ ਲਬਾ-ਲਬ ਅਜ਼ ਕੁਜਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾਏਮ ਜੁਜ਼ ਤਾਲਿਬਿ ਹੱਕ ਨਸੀਬਿ ਹਰ ਕਸ ਨ ਬਵਦ ਈਣ ਦੌਲਤਿ ਨਾਯਾਬ ਕਿ ਮਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਾਏਮ ॥ ੧੬ ॥
goyā khabar aza yād khudā yāfatāem īṇ jām labā-lab aza kujā yāfatāem juza tālib hakk nasīb har kas na bavad īṇ daulat nāyāb ki mā yāfatāem | 16 |
Goya says: from remembering God I gained word of God — how else could I have won this brimming cup? None but the seeker of Truth is granted this rare treasure that I have been so fortunate to find.
ਗੋਯਾ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਦਰੀਣ ਸਰਾਏ ਮਾਦੂਅਮ ਗਾਹੇ ਲਾਜ਼ਮ ਸ਼ਵਦ ਵ ਗਾਹੇ ਮਲਜ਼ੂਮ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਚੂ ਸਗਾਣ ਬਰ ਉਸਤਖ਼ਾਣ ਜੰਗ ਕੁਨੇਮ ਦੁਨਿਆ ਮਾਲੂਅਮ ਅਹਿਲਿ ਦੁਨਿਆ ਮਾਲੂਅਮ ॥ ੧੭ ॥
goyā tā kai darīṇ sarāe mādūam gāhe lāzam shavad va gāhe malazūm tā kai chū sagāṇ bar usatakhāṇ jaṅg kunem duniā mālūam ahil duniā mālūam | 17 |
Goya says: how long will you linger in this perishing world, now bound by need, now by duty? How long fight over bones like dogs? We know this world, and we know its people.
ਗੋਯਾ ਅਗਰ ਆਣ ਜਮਾਲ ਦੀਦਨ ਦਾਰੀ ਅਜ਼ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਹਵਸ ਮੈਲਿ ਰਮੀਦਨ ਦਾਰੀ ਜ਼ੀਣ ਦੀਦਾ ਮਬੀਣ ਕਿ ਹਜ਼ਾਬ ਸਤ ਤੁਰਾ ਬੇ-ਦੀਦਾ ਬਿਬੀਣ ਹਰ ਆਣ ਚਿਹ ਦੀਦਨ ਦਾਰੀ ॥ ੧੮ ॥
goyā agar āṇ jamāl dīdan dārī aza khud havas mail ramīdan dārī zīṇ dīdā mabīṇ ki hazāb sat turā be-dīdā bibīṇ har āṇ chih dīdan dārī | 18 |
Goya says: if you wish to see the glory of God, and to draw yourself away from greed — then do not look with these outward eyes, for they are the veil; look, rather, without them, at all you long to see.
ਮੌਜੂਦ ਖ਼ੁਦਾਸਤ ਤੂ ਕਿਰਾ ਮੀ ਜੋਈ ਮਕਸੂਦ ਖ਼ੁਦਾਸਤ ਤੂ ਕੁਜਾ ਮੀ ਪੋਈ ਈਣ ਹਰ ਦੋ ਜਹਾਣ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਿ ਦੌਲਤਿ ਤੁਸਤ ਯਾਅਨੀ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਅਜ਼ ਜ਼ਬਾਨਿ ਹੱਕ ਮੀ ਗੋਈ ॥ ੧੯ ॥
maujūd khudāsat tū kirā mī joī makasūd khudāsat tū kujā mī poī īṇ har do jahāṇ nishān daulat tusat yāanī sukhan aza zabān hakk mī goī | 19 |
God is present — then whom are you seeking? A meeting with Him is life's whole aim; where are you straying? Both worlds are the sign of the wealth He has given you — so when you speak, you speak with the tongue of God.
ਮਬਰ ਐ ਬਾਦ ਖ਼ਾਕਮ ਅਜ਼ ਦਰਿ ਦੂਸਤ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨਮ ਸਰਜ਼ਨਸ਼ ਕੁਨਦ ਕਿ ਹਰ ਜਾਈਸਤ ॥ ੧ ॥
mabar ai bād khākam aza dar dūsat dushamanam sarazanasha kunad ki har jāīsat | 1 |
O wind, do not blow my dust from my Beloved's door, or the adversary will scoff that He is merely 'everywhere.'
ਨੀਸਤ ਗ਼ੈਰ ਅਜ਼ ਆਣ ਸਨਮ ਦਰ ਪਰਦਾਇ ਦੈਰੋ ਹਰਮ ਕੈ ਬਵਦ ਆਤਿਸ਼ਿ ਦੋ ਰੰਗ ਅਜ਼ ਇਖ਼ਤਲਾਫ਼ਿ ਸੰਗ ਹਾ ॥ ੨ ॥
nīsat ġair aza āṇ sanam dar paradāi dairo haram kai bavad ātish do raṅg aza ikhatalāf saṅg hā | 2 |
There is none but the Beloved behind the veil of temple or shrine — how could one fire burn in two colours only because the stones are of different kinds?
ਆਸਮਾਣ ਸਿਜਦਾ ਕੁਨਦ ਪੇਸ਼ਿ ਜ਼ਮੀਣ ਕਿ ਬਰ ਊ ਯੱਕ ਦੋ ਨਫ਼ਸ ਅਜ਼ ਪੈਏ ਜ਼ਿਕਰਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਬਿਨਸ਼ੀਨੰਦ ॥ ੩ ॥
āsamāṇ sijadā kunad pesh zamīṇ ki bar ū yakk do nafas aza paie zikar khudā binashīnand | 3 |
The sky bows down before the earth — because upon it the devotees of the Eternal sit a breath or two in His remembrance.
ਬਜ਼ੇਰਿ ਸਾਇਆਇ ਤੂਬਾ ਮੁਰਾਦ ਹਾ ਯਾਬੀ ਬਜ਼ੇਰ ਸਾਇਆ ਮਰਦਾਨਿ ਹੱਕ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਯਾਬੀ ॥ ੪ ॥
bazer sāiāi tūbā murād hā yābī bazer sāiā maradān hakk khudā yābī | 4 |
Under the shade of the wish-granting tree, all your wishes are fulfilled — but under the shade of the men of God, you attain God Himself.
