I spend my whole life in His remembrance — life has meaning only while we love the Truth — and I am humbled and endlessly grateful for my Master's kindnesses. The self-centred egoist neither accepts nor believes in remembrance; yet the Eternal is ever the Master, and we of earth His slaves forever. These clay figures, human beings, are made holy only by Him, for His own image dwells in them all — and I have seen the All-Protecting Lord, and stay steeped in His remembrance. I have laid my head at the lotus feet of my great King, and washed my hands of both worlds. There is nothing in anyone's eye but His light — and so I have always sought the company of the holy. Goya says: I have become a speck of dust beneath His feet, since I caught the hem of His robe and took His shelter. Who is Goya? A meditator on the Name of the Eternal — and so he shines in this world like the sun.

Goya says: I am a man of love; I do not 'know' God by argument — I know neither crude abuse nor bargained blessing. I am madly in love with my Beloved who loves me too; I give no weight to a king, nor notice to a beggar. In truth, after all seeking and denying, there is no one anywhere but You — so I know no barrier between You and me. On love's self-effacing path one is so lost that head becomes feet and feet become head; the phrase is often said, yet we cannot tell the one from the other. Drunk with ecstasy, we too, like Goya, have been adrift since the beginning of time, quite forgetful of the ways of ritual and pretence.

Whenever we open our eyes toward our Beloved Guru, our river-eyes stream down with pearl-like tears. Goya says: wherever I looked, I saw only my Beloved's face — when did I ever look upon a stranger, upon any but the Eternal? O meditating saint, do not forbid me the sight of beauty, for I dare look at no one but my true and loving Friend. Goya says: I have taken no nourishment but talk of Your lovely face — on the path of love this has been enough, and I say it still. Goya says: I am drunk on the intoxicating glances of my Beloved — why should I ever long for a sip of any other wine?

Nothing enters my eyes but the King of my own choosing; His tall, God-given form has grown lovely to my sight. Goya says: the Guru revives the dead with His smile, when He rains elixir-words from His bud-like lips. My eyes have become an endless fountain, longing for Your glimpse — come, Beloved; my poor sad life would sacrifice itself for You. If You looked deep into my heart, Guru, You would find nothing there but You — for there is no mention of any other in any limb or drop of my blood. Goya says: I am a fistful of dust, yet my inner self is bright with the glow of His eternal light — and so my wakeful mind forever echoes that message.

Goya says: if you become faithful, none will betray you — the time has come to wake to this truth. If you are alive, give your heart in sacrifice at His lotus feet; offer heart and mind to your Beloved, that you yourself may become beloved. The road of love is long and hard; it cannot be walked on foot — make your head your feet, and so complete the journey to the Beloved. Each of us talks by the measure of what we know; but keep your lips sealed, that you may grasp the truth of His mysteries. Goya says: I offer my infatuated mind for sale, in the hope that You, Guru, in Your kindness, will be its buyer.

O Cup-bearer, put my Beloved into the cup of life — the will to live — that I may live to see His face, freed from separation. I look for Your glimpse in every direction, in vain; O heart, release me from life, that I may surrender before separation comes. All is empty and every place void without You — grant my worldly heart and eyes the union to see You. Scour the rust of sorrow from the mirror of my heart, that I may see only Your reflection there, and the terror of separation end. Goya says: let me see only You and Your splendid colours; I seek release from this bondage and the pain of separation.

If you believe in your own self, no one will prove faithless — such are the times, they ask alertness every moment. If you have life in you, sacrifice it at the Beloved's feet; offer yourself freely, that you too may be loved. The goal of love is far; it cannot be reached on foot — make your head your feet before you set out for the Beloved. Everyone speaks by his own wit; but keep your lips tight-closed if you long to share the Beloved's secrets. Goya says: I want to sell myself and my mad heart to my Beloved — trusting His grace, I am sure He will find it worth the buying.
