Chapter 8

The Ways of Love

Seven ghazals on the ways of love — the tale that ruins a worldly life yet is prized above all, the confession 'I do not know who I am, only that I am His,' and the vision in which, seek as one may, there is no one anywhere but the One.

Hear from me the ways of love, that you may begin to taste its tale. Even if love of the Almighty ruins one's worldly life, he counts that divine joy far above all else. Blessed the breath spent in His remembrance; fortunate the head that gives itself to the path of devotion. A thousand devotees, having staked their lives, stand leaning against the wall of the way to His abode. Whoever has profaned the divine path deserves, like Mansur, the cross of love. Blessed the heart steeped in love of the Eternal — it is the weight of that love that has bent the back of the sky. O resolute heart, if you would listen closely to one note of love's harp, you would become deathless forever. Kings gave up their whole empires to grasp the mysteries and measure of love. Whoever is struck by love's fever, like Goya, has found no other cure than surrender and the remembrance of the Name.

The pure Eternal, Protector of all, gave me birth for one reason: that nothing but the Name should rise from this body of dust. The state of Your lovers in separation is this: their hearts scarred like the poppy, their souls torn apart. Time spent without remembering You is called death — but under Your shelter I have no fear of it. Kings gave up their thrones and crowns for You, Guru; lift the veil from Your face, for the world lies dead with longing. Your heavenly dust heals the suffering world — be merciful to these poor strangers in their pain. It is this world that destroys both worlds: blood-thirsty Dara was mixed with dust, and mighty Qarun killed, all in greed for it. Goya says: without You, Guru, my eyes drop tears like pearls, as grapes fall from the vine.

Your marvels are perfect, the perfection of perfections; Your beauty is the queen of beauty, the beauty of beauties. My breath is nearer to me than my own vein, and this confounds my doctor — yet still, what things we imagine ourselves to be! Goya says: I do not know who or what I am; I know only that I am the slave of the Almighty, and He my Protector everywhere. My heart, snapping every bond, flies to Your street — it is Your grace that spreads my wings for the flight. The devotees who have mastered themselves speak no word but His Name; all else is empty debate to them. My perfect Guru bids everyone remember the Eternal — how blessed the word that makes us His and conquers the self! Goya says: everyone asks, who are you, what shall we call you? The world is caught in a whirlpool of seeing, and all are searching for Your glory.

When the Eternal is present to shield us in every trouble, why waste your time in other, useless efforts? Praise the Lord, O my soul, and speak no other word; become a meditator of His Name, a true devotee of the Master. A moment spent in anything but His remembrance is, in the eyes of the noble, sheer waste and ruin. Wherever you look there is nothing but Him — so why so careless, when the meeting is so plain? Goya: speak no word but the Name of the Eternal, for every other talk is hollow and baseless.

Goya says: I have known every human God made as God Himself, and count myself the slave of all these slaves of Truth. My eyes need no collyrium to see, for I have always held the dust of the road God's men have walked as the truest collyrium. I bow my head to the ground each breath, for I have seen in the Beloved's face the light of the Almighty. God's holy men have handed kingdoms to worldly kings — so I count the humblest beggar in my Beloved's street a king. Goya says: I have no wish for wealth or property, Guru, for I hold the shadow of a lock of Your hair as the feather of the phoenix.

I have seen the heart-stealer in the eyes of the seer, and then, wherever I looked, I saw only my Beloved Guru. I have circled both Kaaba and temple, and seen no one anywhere but You. Whenever I looked with searching, gathered eyes, I found the Eternal's home within my own heart. To beg in Your street, Guru, is far better than any kingdom; the joy I found in giving up my pride was the joy of ruling both worlds. Goya says: I heard the warning in my ears the very first day — I have seen the end of the world in its beginning.

Goya says: I ask nothing unkind of my Friend and Beloved; I seek no cure even for my mind's anguish. I am sick for the Narcissus-friend who rules narcissus itself as a slave; I long neither for Khizar nor Messiah to heal me. Wherever I look I see only the splendour of Your beauty; I seek no other sight but the glow of my Beloved. In my Beloved's company I look at no one else; I will not even open my eyes before another. I give my life like the moth at the lamp — but I do not wail uselessly like the nightingale. Goya says to himself: keep silent, speak not a word — my love's bargain is made with my head; while this head lasts, the bargain holds.
