Chapter 7

Come to the Garden

Seven ghazals of invitation and cleansing — come to the garden with Your cypress stride; the candle that burns itself down waiting through the night; and the washing of the mind's five vices to find the real Self.

Come, Guru, even a moment to the garden, with Your cypress stride — my eyes have worn themselves out waiting for You. One smile of Yours is balm for my broken heart; the smile of Your ruby lips is the cure of all my ills. You looked at me but once and stole all my inner wealth — with one sidelong glance You cut my heart away as with scissors. O new spring of the garden of grace, Your coming has turned this world into paradise — how great the One who grants such a gift! Goya says: why not look upon my sorry state even once? For the needy, one look of Yours fulfils every wish.

O Guru, we have a close and special bond with You; the music of Your footsteps has filled the whole world with joy. I have spread my blossoming heart and wide-open eyes as a carpet on the road of Your coming. Be kind to the beggar-devotees of the Lord, and you will find abundant joy in this world. Keep your heart forever turned to the love of the Eternal, and you will pass your worldly life in ease. No one under this sky is truly happy or content; O Goya, walk on and leave this old lodging-house behind with care.

O my Beloved, may the Almighty be your Protector wherever you go — You have taken my heart and my faith; may He keep you everywhere. Both nightingale and flowers await Your coming, Guru; drop into my garden a moment — may the Lord keep you. Sprinkle salt from Your red lips on my wounded heart, and sear this kabab-charred heart of mine — may Providence keep you. How sweet if Your cypress form would walk my garden even a moment! May the Lord be your Protector wherever you go. Goya says: come, dwell in the pupils of my eyes, for Your home is within these weeping eyes — may God be with you.

O Guru, Your face is the reason the lamp burns bright, and for You the pearl-raining eye of the candle sheds its tears. When Your hidden qualities became known, the wounded, tender heart of the lamp wept. Wherever people have lit a lamp, count it a flower in the lamp's own garden. Since You showed the grace of Your face, the candle offers itself a hundred times in sacrifice for You. To give itself a hundred times for Your face, the weeping eye of the candle pours out its life. You did not come tonight, when the candle waited in fierce longing — and its fire-raining eye burned down the whole assembly. Goya says: how strange and wonderful the sight at dawn, when the whole world sleeps and the sleeping lamp alone is wide awake.

Rise, O Cup-bearer, and fill my glass, that I may turn the colour of my thought to joy. The noose of Your hair caught my heart and swept it away — and in each curl, twist by twist, I was seeking the one message of Truth. This body of dust is the play of fire and water; light it from Your own candle. From the rays of Your pure glimpse a hundred thousand lamps were lit everywhere. O Goya: always remember Him and meditate on His Name alone, that you may be freed from care here and hereafter.

If, for love of the Beloved, you can cleanse your mind of the five vices without a doubt, then truly you will soon find your real self. Our ego has driven us far from the Almighty; let go your vanity, do not follow the mind's whims, and you will see the Merciful One plainly. The true lovers are always steeped in His love; O boaster, do not brag of devotion before them. Give up the pleasures of all five senses, that you may taste the clean cup of the holy elixir. Goya says: always keep seeking the road of the true Guru, lest by walking the wrong way we lose our path — that we may be freed from double-mindedness.

As the hour of His coming drew near, I lost the reins of separation's pain, and what befell my mind after is a sorrowful tale. There is no one in my eyes and brows but You, Guru — and so I saw no sign of separation except myself. Separation has not yet known the joy of meeting; from separation itself I keep hearing tales of union. Since Your absence lit such a fire in my heart, my cries fell like lightning on the house of separation and burned it to ash. Parting from You, Goya says, has put me in so strange a state that I have told this painful tale past all counting, and my thought stands still.
