Chapter 6

The Word of the Perfect Guru

Seven ghazals on the life-giving glance — the spring smile that breathes life into the world, the beauty of growing old in the Beloved's company, and the nectar-talisman of the perfect Guru's word that revives the half-dead heart.

O first shoots of the spring crop, by the grace of your coming the whole world is filled with flowers like the garden of heaven. Your smile, Guru, breathes life into the world, and gives rest to the mystic eyes of the saints. There is no lasting love but the love of the Eternal; count all but His devotees as passing away. Whichever way You look, You give new life; it is Your glance alone that rains life everywhere. The Eternal is present in every place and with everyone always — but where is the eye that can see Him in every corner? None but those given to the love of God is ever redeemed; death holds earth and time alike in its sharp beak. Goya says: the devotee of the Eternal becomes deathless, for without His remembrance no one leaves a trace behind.

I grew from young to old in the lap of the years — how beautiful the life I spent in Your company; I owe its whole happiness to Your grace. Count the breaths that remain to you as blessed, for it is autumn that one day brings the spring of youth again. Count blessed the moment spent remembering God — else the whole life slips away like air while we watch, merely counting breaths. The stream of life flows on like a caravan of the tides of time; if you can, take one sip from it with every breath. Goya says: you have busied yourself with a hundred vain tasks of no lasting use — turn now to what will serve you here and hereafter.

O Knower of all mysteries, we who have seen the head of Your street bowed our heads to its dust in utter humility and turned away from all else. Since I made Your street my constant haunt, I have refused the highest heaven and counted it but the floor beneath Your doorsill. The waves of Your fragrant locks took my heart and soul — the highest treasure gathered in my long life. The sight of Your face is the sacred text that keeps everyone safe; one arch of Your brow is the prayer-niche in Your devotees' minds. Goya says: how can I tell the state of my mind in separation from You? It is a lamp that must forever burn and melt away its longing.

O Guru, the whole world is bewildered without You; my heart and soul are charred on the grill of Your separation. Every seeker of God lives forever, for he keeps only the Name of the Almighty on his tongue. The fragrant mole of Your cheek has enchanted the world, and Your hair is a snare for faith itself. Show me Your sun-like face soon, Guru — it is the only cure for my weeping eyes. My heart is captivated by Your graceful form; my life is a sacrifice to the dust of the Beloved's feet. Ah, if only You had asked Goya even once, 'How are you?' — that alone would heal this tortured heart.

Once drunk on His Name, become pure and chaste — intoxicated, indifferent to life, an image of remembrance. Do not cast your eyes on any other; that would be blindness — become all eye, head to foot, and turn your gaze to the Beloved alone. Circle the form of the heart-stealing King, and count yourself the captive of the knot of His fragrant hair. I do not ask you to go to temple or to shrine — only that wherever you go, you keep your face toward the Almighty. Why turn from me like a stranger and heed my rivals? Look toward me a moment, and know this broken heart. Goya says: grow content and glad like my heart, and do not turn away once your desires are met — rise above all wanting; that is how the true goal is won.

The hearts of all who love deeply are scorched; both worlds are dazed and restless for His glimpse. The dust of Your street is collyrium for the eye of divine sight, and for weeping eyes there is no better cure. Moon and sun circle His abode night and day; it is His gift that they can light both worlds. Wherever I look I find His beauty and splendour; the whole world is dazed for His curling hair. Goya says: the pockets of the earth are filled with the pearls of my tears — I have won the whole world by remembering the smile of His red lips.

Whoever has heard the Guru's enchanted words in his blessed company is freed in a moment from a hundred sorrows. The word of the perfect Guru is a nectar-talisman for us all; it revives and saves the half-dead mind. The Almighty is far, far from the deceit of our ego; a little self-searching frees us from that vanity. If you serve the holy and the noble, you are freed from all the world's grief. O Goya: draw back your hands from desire and greed, so that you may see the glory of the Almighty within yourself.
