Chapter 7

Guru Hargobind — Sword and Light

The sixth Guru, whose blessing gave the world its daylight and whose sword struck down the cruel — holy wonder clear as the day.

The sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind, shone with holy light. His blessing gave the world its daylight, and his praise drove away the darkness of ignorance. His sword struck down cruel tyrants, and his arrows could split open stone. His holy wonders were clear as the day, and his court was brighter than the highest sky. He was the gladness of every gathering where God's wisdom was taught. Nand Lal reads the letters of his name as gifts — the teacher of God's Name, the darling of every eye, a pearl of love, a rose of freshness, a beam of undying truth, the boon of everlasting Gurbani, and a knower of every hidden and open mystery.

Guru Hargobind was grace itself; because of him, even the lost and the weary were welcomed into God's court. His blessings are beyond all counting, and his majesty is the splendour of God.

His whole being is the work of God's grace, and he surpasses even the chosen in wisdom. Famous alike in holy poverty and in kingship, he holds all under his command. Both worlds are bright with his light, and every heart thirsts for the gift of seeing him.
