About this piece
A jaali is a stone screen cut into lace, so that light and air come through and the room stays cool. The great ones are in the tombs and gurdwaras of northern India.
This one is drawn from the Mosaic’s own jaali: four great circles cut a flower out of every square, with a lotus in each. It stands inside a pointed arch, with pale sky, rose and butter washed in behind it.
