Chapter 2

The Fruit of Bliss

Forty-five poems on the Gurmukh's inner experience — the sight of the Guru that undoes ordinary awareness, the unstruck music behind the tenth gate, the nectar-stream of the Name, and the wisdom that turns the base to gold and sees one Light in a world of many forms.

At the very sight of You, awareness lost its awareness, the mind lost its mind, and understanding held no more understanding. Consciousness forgot itself, meditation forgot to meditate, knowledge forgot what it knew, and every inner state let go of itself. Patience lost its patience and pride lost its pride; passion loosened its grip, and only love for the Beloved was left. Wonder upon wonder, marvel upon marvel, amazement past all amazement — endless, endless it is.

What home can equal the tenth gate within? The Gurmukh who reaches it looks nowhere else. What can compare to the light of a mind grown still beyond itself — a light given only by grace, and whoever receives it becomes that light. What sound is like the unstruck melody? The one whom the beloved Guru lets hear it fixes his love there forever. Nothing can weigh against that endless, boundless stream of nectar; whoever is given it to drink melts away into it.

gur sikh sandh mile bīs ik īs īs it te ulaṅgh ut jāi ṭhaharāvaī | charam drisaṭ mūnd pekhai dib drisaṭ kai jagamag jot unamanī sudh pāvaī | surat saṅkochat hī bajar kapāṭ khol nād bād parai anahat liv lāvaī | bachan bisarajit an ras rahit hui nijhar apār dhār apiu pīāvaī |11|

Where the Guru and the Sikh become one, all the many merge into the one Lord; the soul crosses from this shore and comes to rest on the far one. Closing the outer eye, it sees with the inner, divine eye — the shimmering Light — and gains an awareness beyond the mind. The moment the attention turns inward, the diamond-hard doors swing open; past all noise and argument, it settles on the unstruck melody. Setting speech aside, emptied of every other taste, it drinks the nectar of that endless, boundless stream.

jau lau an ras bas tau lau nahī prem ras jau lau ān dhiān āp āp nahī dekhīai | jau lau ān giān tau lau na adhayātam giān jau lau nād bād na anāhad bisekhīai | jau lau ahan budh sudh hoi na antaragat jau lau na lakhāvai tau lau alakh na lekhīai | sat rūp sat nām sat gur giān dhiān ek hī anek mek ek ek bhekhīai |12|

As long as other tastes still hold you, the taste of love has not yet come; as long as anything else fills your eyes, you have not yet seen your own true Self. As long as other knowledge remains, the knowing of the soul has not dawned; as long as noise and argument go on, the unstruck melody stays unheard. As long as the ego's 'I' holds on, the inner state is not grasped; until the Unseen shows itself, the Unseen cannot be read. He is the Form of Truth and the Name of Truth — and in knowing and remembering the Guru, the one and the many become a single, seamless One.

There are countless sweets and drinks and endless tasty dishes, and the tongue is called the taster of them all. But the sight of the Guru's darshan, the Word held in the heart, knowledge, meditation and remembrance — boundless is their glory. Every part of the mind grows still; the melody and the sound, the strength of understanding, the gift of wise speech — all this the tongue has found. By the Guru's wisdom, remembering the True Name bears fruit; sweet is its ringing, and sweet to hear.

Drunk on the taste of love, the moth feels no pain as it burns; parted from what it longs for, does a man not die as a fish dies out of water? Yet even in seeing and in meditation, one still does not become the very Light; turning from those feet, the breath lingers on. He has known neither true love nor true longing in all his meeting and parting — and before the fish and the moth, looking at myself, I stand ashamed. Wasted is a human life spent on false attachment, while the humble little creatures never cling to the body the way we do.

The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — its taste is wonder itself, a joy so deep that words cannot reach it. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — its fragrance a marvel beyond marvels, cool and tender to the touch. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — its greatness is wisdom past all measuring; where the Guru and the Sikh meet, the Unseen is seen. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — a million splendours in every limb; whoever tastes it chases nothing else.

Steadying the breath, stilling the mind's restless darting, meeting the True Guru's pleasure, the highest state is won. Drying the sun-channel, filling the moon-channel, joining the two, the soul is given the nectar of the pool of deathlessness to drink. Burning what cannot age, slaying deathless doubt, its frame made steady, the swan-soul flies nowhere else. Source merges in Source, sound in Sound, water in water, Brahm in Brahm — and it settles into natural ease.

After ages the priceless gift of human birth is found, and it bears fruit by taking refuge at the Guru's feet. Priceless the eyes that behold the Guru's priceless darshan; priceless the ears that hold the Guru's word. Priceless the nostrils drawn to the fragrance of his lotus-feet; priceless the tongue that remembers the Guru's mantra. Priceless the hands in the Guru's service; blessed and priceless the feet that walk in reverence around him.

In the seeing and its meditation, the divine eye opened; by one merciful glance the very body was made worthy and bright. With the mind fixed on the Word, the diamond-hard doors flew open; on the tongue of love's taste lies a whole treasure-house of nectar. The honey-fragrance of the lotus-feet perfumes everything; the hands in worship, the head bowed low — blessed, shining knowing. Limb by limb the wonder spread until it filled every part, and the mind, with all its wanting, fell still in the meditation of Brahm.

The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — such utter wonder that, beholding it, one is lost, and every other thought is forgotten. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — its scent and taste so marvellous that no craving for any other taste can take hold. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — a place so wondrous that the passing world no longer tempts. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — seeing the meeting of the holy company, all other knowledge and thought seem flat and tasteless.

The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — whoever is shown it by grace finds no other form or colour worth beholding. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — whoever is given its taste finds no other taste can please the tongue. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — whoever is helped to grasp the Ungraspable runs after no other treasure. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — whoever is shown the Unseen, that untellable joy becomes his alone.

The Siddhas, Naths and Yogis could not reach it in their deepest trance; reciting the Vedas, even Brahma did not know it. With all his inner knowledge, Shiva could not attain it, nor the sons of Sanak; wrapped in worldly pleasure, even Indra did not recognise it. However they counted, Shesh-Nag and the rest could not measure it; for all their vows, Narad and the others were left bewildered. Through countless lifetimes the boundless One was never fully reached — yet the perfect Brahm the Guru's Sikh holds firm in the heart.

The Guru's teaching held in the heart, humility for its home, and steady meditation on the Guru's form — this is the perfect Brahm. The Gurmukh's mind fixed on the Word, wisdom beyond the mind, in natural ease is made equal to the Soul of all. Letting go of ego, the giver-up becomes a wonder-struck lover, unattached; the mind, in the state beyond the mind, reaches the Unreachable. Subtle and vast, root of the one and the many alike — freed while still living: homage, homage, homage to Him.

One who never becomes the very Light in the seeing, as the moth does; who never learns the deer's way of the Word held in the heart; whose way is not the bee's toward the honey of the lotus-feet, nor the fish's dying in the pang of parting; who holds no single support, but slips as the lower creatures do — not even four kinds of cleverness can save him from being lost. Yet the True Guru is an ocean of peace even for the stone-hearted: at the sound of the Name, Death and its hell shrink back ashamed.

Taking the Guru's wisdom as true, the restless grew still, and vessels full of filth were washed spotlessly clean. Taking the Guru's wisdom as true, the born became birthless; from the grip of death they were given the deathless state. Taking the Guru's wisdom as true, ego was lost and one became the dust of all; past the three-fold knot, at the meeting of the streams, the Self beheld itself. Taking the Guru's wisdom as true, caste and casteless fell away; fear and doubt cast off, they were gathered into fearlessness.

Taking the Guru's wisdom as true, the coarse and unruly became saints; the mere creature earned the name of holy. Taking it as true, the thoughtless grew wise; desire itself became desireless. Taking it as true, the ignorant became a knower of Brahm, and one came to rest in natural ease. Taking it as true, they were freed while still living, and found the changeless home.

Taking the Guru's wisdom as true, enmity turned to friendship — the perfect Brahm was known in the Guru through faith. Taking it as true, division turned to oneness; double-mindedness, the tangle of 'do' and 'do not', all fell away. Taking it as true, the crow became the royal swan; given a share of knowledge, the scentless was made fragrant. Taking it as true, the tangle of deeds and doubt was undone; freed from grasping even amid hope, trust settled in the heart.

Taking the Guru's wisdom as true, the barren silk-cotton tree bore fruit; the hollow bamboo grew fragrant. Taking it as true, iron-slag turned to gold; the blind gained the eye to tell true from false. Taking it as true, deadly poison became nectar; in the midst of death, the deathless — the frame made steady. Taking it as true, they were freed while still living; surrounded by Maya yet untouched — bound, yet free of every bond.

With the mind fixed on the Word, where the Guru and the Sikh become one, the sun fills the house of the moon and the soul comes home to itself. Steadying the breath, the mind's restlessness meeting at the confluence, crossing the three-fold knot, it merges in the ocean of peace. Passing beyond the three qualities into the fourth state, the endless, boundless stream lets its nectar drip. Like the sheldrake, the partridge, the peacock and the rain-bird in their joy, like a lotus resting on water, it rests in the pure, clear stream.

With the mind fixed on the Word, where the Guru and the Sikh meet, the spread of the five thieves is wiped away and the five virtues reign. Fear, doubt, division, and the pain of death and deeds all flee; past the world and the Vedas, the Guru's knowledge dawns. Maya and Brahm made equal, through the tenth gate the unstruck music rings, its drums resounding. Absorbed in the state beyond the mind, in the inner sky, the shimmering Light — that endless, boundless stream, the supreme treasure.

Living as a householder at home, he did not find natural peace; nor did renouncing the world for the forest win him the fruit of detachment. Reading and reading, the scholar did not grasp the untellable tale; even on the adepts' seat he could not steady his own true seat. In their yogic trances the Naths did not see the Lord; through sacrifice, feasting and worship He is not seized even now. Serving gods and goddesses did not turn aside the habit of ego — but the Unseen, the Unfathomable, the divine Guru made it plain.

Past the three qualities, reaching the fourth; crossing the five elements, he comes to dwell in the Supreme Essence. Giving up the six tastes and gaining the taste of love, filling the seven pools, he sounds the unstruck melody. Piercing the eight doctrines, becoming the Master of masters, he delights at the tenth place in the ocean of peace. Absorbed in the state beyond the mind, in the inner sky, the stream pours down; in natural trance, by the Guru's pleasure, he lives unattached.

Ending double-mindedness, casteless amid the castes, past the five-fold spread, seen and yet unseen. Touching the supreme touchstone, the Guru, one becomes a touchstone too — as many metals turn to gold — the Self beyond all touch. Crossing the nine gates to the seat of Brahm, the throne, where the stream pours without end and no other taste appeals. Where the Guru and the Sikh meet, all the many become the one Lord; brimming with the unstruck song, the empty vessel is filled.

Adoring the lotus-feet, the heart's lotus blooms, and vision upon vision, He shows one equal Light everywhere. With the mind fixed on the Word, absorbed in the unstruck melody, lost in the state beyond the mind, spread across the inner sky. Held by the taste of love, filled with wonder, made bodiless, beholding utter marvel, one is lost in the beholding. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss — its glory is wisdom past all measure, an untellable joy that cannot be told.

Erasing base-mindedness, the Guru's wisdom dawns in the heart; ignorance falls away, and one knows the knowledge of Brahm. In the darshan and its meditation, forgetting every other thought, the mind on the Word — this is the true vow of silence. Relishing the taste of love, empty of all other tastes, Light within Light, the very form of Light, sounding the note 'I am He.' Where the Guru and the Sikh meet, all the many become the one Lord; perfect discernment, the one true support, is brought into the heart.

In whose every pore a million universes dwell, yet who took human form to grant His darshan; whose Ik Onkar takes shapes of countless kinds — from His sacred mouth the Word is sung to the Guru's Sikhs. To whom the world offers its worship and its food, the world's own devotees — it is He who feeds His Guru's Sikhs with food and clothing. Whom scripture and Shesh-Nag can only call 'not this, not this' — that perfect Brahm He makes plain to the Guru's Sikhs.

Beyond form and yet within form, the Unseen, the unshown state — the perfect Brahm has shown Himself as the Guru's form. In form, the beloved Guru's darshan is the shape to meditate upon; the partless, the timeless, He shows to the Guru's Sikhs. Formless, the beloved Guru is the unstruck ringing of the Word; pierced by that Word, the Guru's Sikhs are made to hear. The honey of the lotus-feet, the home of desirelessness — there the Guru's Sikhs cling like bees.

The perfect Brahm, the Guru, is a jasmine vine — root, branch and leaf spreading in every direction. The Guru's Sikh is its fragrant flower, his own true form; blooming there, he carries the world across. Mingling as plain sesame takes on the flower's scent, he loses his separate self and becomes the perfume of the blossom. On the Gurmukh's path the fallen are made pure; the worldly become the Formless One's, living for the good of others.

The perfect Brahm, the Guru, is a spreading tree — root, trunk, branch and leaf of countless kinds. On it the Guru's Sikh, his own true form, ripens as fruit — fragrance, sweetness and blessing to all. Relishing the honey of the lotus-feet, tasting the nectar of the feet, he carries the world across. The greatness of the Gurmukh's path is an untellable tale — 'not this, not this, not this' — homage, homage, all reverence.

As cows of many colours give but one white milk, so let the world understand. As countless fruits and flowers grow, yet one same fire lives in all the plants alike. As the four — betel-leaf, lime, areca and catechu — lose their separate selves to meet in one matchless red. People keep their worldly ways, but the Gurmukh sees the One Ik Onkar; with his mind fixed on the Word, he rises to the state beyond the mind.

Watered by the same rain, plants of many kinds grow, yet the sandalwood's fragrance makes them all be called sandal. Born in the mountain, the eight metals, touched by the touchstone, are all known as one — as gold. In the dark of night the star-fields glitter; by day it is the sun's one light we see. People keep their worldly ways, but the Gurmukh sees the One Ik Onkar; with his mind fixed on the Word, he rises to the state beyond the mind.

As the noble bride, veiled among the Guru's people, keeps no distance from her beloved at the hour of union. As the serpent, its jewel and its kin around it, straightens its coiled body to slip, life and all, into its hole. As one says nothing of son and wife while mother and father live, then in the end gives them all his wealth, his love bound to son and spouse. People keep their worldly ways, but the Gurmukh sees the One Ik Onkar — his mind on the Word, risen from the heart beyond itself.

Pleasure held within yoga, and yoga within pleasure and restraint — yet the Gurmukh's path stands beyond both yoga and pleasure. Meditation held within knowledge, and knowledge held within meditation — by the Guru's wisdom, unbeaten in both knowing and meditation. Devotion held within love, and love within devotion — the vow; the Unseen love-and-devotion is the Gurmukh's way. Within the formless and the formed, a wondrous faith fills the heart; and past even that wonder lies the perfect, whole certainty.

At the slightest merciful glance the body turns divine, the eye turns divine, and meditation on the divine Light unfolds as something divine. The support of the discerning Word grows plain; by the Guru's wisdom, reaching the unstruck sound, the state beyond the mind is made sure. From knowledge, meditation and daily practice the taste of love wells up; the Gurmukh's bliss, the vow of love, turns quietly on its own. Like a bee in the cup of the lotus petals, drinking the honey in natural trance, the breath comes to peace.

As one catches a parrot and makes it grip a tube upside down — it could free itself with its own claws, yet it clings and stays caught. As, told again and again, 'say it, say it,' it learns its own name and then repeats it itself. As the name of Ram of the Raghu line, on a low-born woman's tongue, by the holy company's grace turns her speech and wakes her mind — so, taking refuge at the Guru's feet in the holy company, knowing the Self, the Gurmukh finds bliss.

The seeing within the vision, the vision within the seeing — the seen and the unseen: this is meditation upon the Guru. Consciousness within the Word, the Word's ring within consciousness — Word and consciousness past all measure: this is the Guru's knowledge. From knowledge, meditation and daily practice the taste of love appears; by the Guru's wisdom, the vow of love is liberation itself. Body, breath and the Lord of breath, all the many present as one — the Gurmukh's bliss is the treasure held in the single Lord.

Mind, word and deed drawn into one, he became a king, seated on the throne of natural ease, his reign unshaken. Truth and contentment, mercy, right living and purpose joined — the five made worthy, the Guru's wisdom his royal court. Every treasure and all riches in his court, the fragrant city of Shiva, bright with a million splendours. His rule and his love as one, his people's happiness his own — every wish fulfilled, every task brought to completion.

Taking refuge at the feet, mind, word and deed as one, reaching through the three times and the three worlds, awareness is won. Perfecting natural trance, the unreachable, unfathomable tale is shown unbroken, within and without. Realm and universe, body, breath and the Lord of breath — where the Guru and the Sikh meet, love is fixed on 'I am He.' As a mirror is to sight, as an instrument is to the skilled player, warp and weft one single thread — double-mindedness is erased.

Taking refuge at the feet, mind, word and deed as one, the body and the three worlds' state — the Unseen is seen. Mind, word and deed; deed, mind and word; word, deed and mind — the state beyond the mind spreads over all. To the knower, the meditator, the doer, the Guru is the still centre — as flower and cane are distilled in the furnace, so the endless, boundless stream is drawn out. Drinking to the full the treasure-nectar of love's taste, meeting the Gurmukh, one merges into natural ease.

So many trees and vines, fruit and flower, root and branch — the play of creation painted in countless forms. Fruits of colour upon colour, tastes of every kind; flowers of colour upon colour spreading their fragrance. Roots of every colour, branches of every colour, leaves of every colour — each with its own qualities and ways. Yet as one same fire lives in all the many plants, so in the whole world there is but the One, Ik Onkar.

Where the Guru and the Sikh meet, his gaze fixed on the darshan — the Gurmukh, the devoted one, sets his love on the knowledge of God (Brahm). Where the Guru and the Sikh meet, his mind fixed on the Word, the Gurmukh wins a pure, clear knowing of God and deep meditation. Where the Guru and the Sikh meet, master and servant serving as one, the Gurmukh earns the deed done with no wish for reward. Where the Guru and the Sikh meet, action itself turns into knowing and meditation; the Gurmukh's vow of love melts into natural ease.

Where the Gurmukh meets, his love fixed on the meditation of Brahm — the One Ik Onkar takes shapes of countless kinds. Where the Gurmukh meets, his love fixed on the knowledge of Brahm — the Formless, the Onkar, spreads in endless ways. Where the Guru and the Sikh meet, master and servant serving as one — the discernment of Brahm, and love, devotion and right living. Where the Gurmukh meets, a state of utter marvel — 'not this, not this, not this' — homage, homage, all reverence.

The Gurmukh — mind, word and deed as one — limb by limb, the wonder fills every part. Drunk on the treasure-nectar of love's taste, the tongue falls silent; it cannot tell. The shimmering Light of love is so utter a marvel that the eyes are struck and lost in the beholding. Hearing the melody, the sound, the wondrous ring of love, the ear's awareness dissolves and dissolves away.

The Gurmukh — mind, word and deed as one — has made the perfect, supreme state of love shine forth. In the eyes, sight and darshan; where they meet, the ear finds the Word and awareness, and scent finds its savour. On the tongue, taste and scent; the Word and awareness joined; the nose its fragrance — Word and hearing revealed. Pore by pore — tongue, ear, eye and nose — through a million realms and universes, in body and breath, it is shown.
