First of all, the root of all dharma, the wonder, the Guru's own law — the perfect Brahm keeps His Light shining plain. The four castes meet and become one caste; in the holy company, in natural strain, is the kirtan, the witness of the Word. The Name, the home of desirelessness, one's own true home — the Guru's Sikh, a ringing in the ear; the Guru's Sikh, in right wisdom, sees the Unseen. With the slightest glance He gives His grace; and the one He gives it to, diving deep, tastes the love of the Beloved.

The mind on the Word, arising unbidden, at once binds itself fast, and in the holy company does not turn away. The way of love and trust, made whole in a loving heart, conquers the mind; in the world such a mind is not led astray. Desire made desireless, deeds done free of deeds, hope made hopeless — it does not fall away. Holding the Guru's knowledge and meditation in the heart, the perfect Brahm — in the world, the wisdom of devotion is never lost.

A million million kinds of knowledge, diving deep in knowing; a million million meditations held in the heart. A million million remembrances, remembered; a million million risings beyond the mind, again and again. A million million turnings of the mind to the Word and to the sight; a million million melodies and sounds ringing out. A million million vows of love to the Guru's Word — 'not this, not this,' homage, homage, all reverence.

The mind fixed on the Word, grown casteless — the four castes meet; know it as the holy company. The mind fixed on the Word, the fish's way in water — its secret going, drinking the water; so let it be known. The mind fixed on the Word, grown skilled — the perfect Brahm; know it as one, and one alone. The mind fixed on the Word, become the dust of the feet — O Gurmukh, bring that mind-on-the-Word into your heart.

The Gurmukh, seated firm in meditation, wearing only a coarse blanket — the splendour of countless silks does not please him. The Gurmukh's fruit of bliss, the sweetness of knowledge, undoes his longing for endless dishes and their tastes. In the supreme treasure of the Beloved's love, the highest truth, no wish for any other treasure arises. At the perfect Brahm, the Guru's slightest grace and glance, the mind and its wanting fall still and run nowhere else.

Blessed, blessed the Guru's Sikh — hearing of him, one becomes a Guru's Sikh; a Guru's Sikh at heart, the Guru's Sikh's mind is content. In the Guru's Sikh's love, love and longing fill the heart; knowing the Guru's Sikh, the world comes to know the Guru's Sikh. Where Guru and Sikh meet, the Guru's Sikh is made whole; the Guru's Sikh comes to know the perfect Brahm. The Guru's Sikh's vow of love, the Guru's Sikh, the Sikh's Guru — 'I am He, He is I' — all the many become the one Lord, brought into the heart.

The True Guru is true, the True Guru's wisdom true in the heart, no second love to part it, beyond the three qualities. The perfect Brahm, the Guru, whole and all-pervading, the One and the many made one, the friend of all. Without enmity, unstained, needing no support or prop, formless, without flaw, the mind unshaken. Spotless, priceless, immaculate, needing no food, without attachment, without division, unfailing, unconquered.

The True Guru is true, the True Guru's Word is true; true is the holy company — know it, O Gurmukh. Darshan and meditation true, the mind on the Word true, the company of the Guru's Sikhs true — hold it all as true. Darshan the meditation of Brahm, the Word the knowledge of Brahm, the company the seat of Brahm — know it through love. Form of Truth, Name of Truth, the True Guru's knowledge and meditation — desire made desireless, risen beyond the mind.

The Gurmukh beholds the perfect Brahm with the eye; the Gurmukh, through the Word, is the perfect Brahm. The Gurmukh, the perfect Brahm, is heard in the hearing; his sweet words, his humble plea, a wonder. The Gurmukh, the perfect Brahm, is fragrance meeting fragrance — the taste of love, the sandal's scent that comes and goes. The Gurmukh, the perfect Brahm, the Guru present in all — the Gurmukh, the perfect Brahm, homage, homage.

The seen and the unseen darshan, a wonder — beholding it, one is lost; the eye's own sight cannot reach it. The Word beyond grasping, the Word a marvel beyond marvels; in the untellable tale, the ear's hearing is filled with wonder. Empty of taste and savour, the undrinkable drunk, the taste of love — the tongue falls still: 'not this, not this,' homage, homage. Formless and formed, the unseen, the fathomless state, subtle and vast, the Root — this is the perfect Brahm.

Better bound than free is the falcon — for it does not kill wantonly, and does no harm. Better bound than free is the chakwi — the line of Ram wiped away, she wins her mate through the night. Better bound than free is the famous parrot — hearing instruction, it fixes its love on the Name of Ram. So, better than the state of liberation is this human birth well-used — the Gurmukh in the holy company meditates on the Lord.

As the parrot flies wandering wood to wood, and on whatever tree it sits, tastes that tree's fruit; falling into another's power, whatever company it meets, hearing that talk, it takes on that speech; so the fickle, restless mind has the nature of water — the colour it meets is the colour it keeps. The base and unholy are like the wine of one's ruin; but meeting the Ganga of the holy company, one becomes a noble soul.

As white cloth takes on whatever colour it meets, so that colour clings to every part. As the writer, to worship the Lord's story, sets it down on paper — a bond that grants freedom. As in the three seasons — cold, heat and rain — night and day grow short or long by turns, so the fickle, restless mind, moving like the wind, gives off fragrance or foul smell by the company it keeps.

The four watches of the day are the world's four ages; night is like the great dissolution — so it is, day upon day. High, middle and low, the world moves by the three qualities; the knowledge of people and Vedas measures its attachments. Rajas, tamas and sattva, virtue and fault, held in the mind — but rare is the one who, by the Guru's wisdom, rises past the three. The four castes are the pieces on the board of the world; in the holy company, the pair together are freed while still living.

As colour meeting water becomes that very colour, so know the colours of the world. The sandal's fragrance meeting the breeze becomes a fragrant wind; meeting filth and waste, a foul stench. As whatever cooked food and dish the ghee meets, that taste and savour the tongue takes on — so the unholy and the holy company: their nature is known as the radish and the betel are known by their eating.

Child, youth, the bloom of age and old age — in one single birth, states of many kinds. As night and day, lunar day and weekday, fortnight, month and season and four-month spell spread out through the three-fold year; as waking, dream and deep sleep — the fourth state dawns by the grace of the Guru's knowledge. Winning the human birth, meeting the holy company — the saint, the devotee, the discerning one meditates on Brahm.

As the chakwi rejoices to see the reflection at night, and the lion, seeing its own reflection, leaps into the well; as a man in a hall of mirrors is filled with delight, but a dog, seeing itself, barks itself to death; as the sun's son Yama, the King of Dharma, raises fear by the measure of right and wrong — so, by base-mindedness or the Guru's wisdom, are the unholy and the holy: one knows the Self, the other, not knowing, wanders on.

As water, meeting colour upon colour, shows itself as whatever colour it meets; as ghee, meeting whatever cooked dish, gives the tongue that dish's taste and savour; as an actor, being one, wears the guise of many roles, and by whatever part he plays, by that name he is called — so the fickle, restless mind takes the stain of its company; but becoming a Gurmukh, it holds firm to the one support.

As from the churned ocean came both nectar and poison, so the good of others and its harm are born together. Drinking the poison brings ruin; the jewel of nectar, once drunk, makes the dead live on, deathless. As a swimmer, from a single lump of clay, makes plain both the bound and the freed crossing spread through the world — so too the unholy and the holy, the hemp and the madder; the way of the Guru's wisdom and of base-mindedness will not leave their nature.

In the rainy season both the pearl and the hailstone form — the one a giver of good, the other called a spoiler. As the hail falls and destroys the standing grain, the pearl gains a matchless form, honoured in the court. The hail does harm and, even as you watch, melts away; the pearl, giver of good, holds its place. So too the unholy and the holy company: the Guru's wisdom and base-mindedness cannot be hidden.

Modesty the goad of her line, and the character of the Guru's people — the noble bride, in her vow, is called a faithful wife. But in wicked company, in the fellowship of the base and unholy, holding much loose thought, she is summoned a harlot. The noble wife's son is named by his lineage and clan; the harlot's, like a stray dog's, is asked to name its father. As, by base-mindedness, the crow flits from wood to wood, so by the Guru's wisdom the swan holds the one support and wins honour.

Taking the human birth, by the way of one's company, the Guru's wisdom or base-mindedness ordains many fates. In the holy company, the rank of devotee, the discerning one, freed while still living, the saint, the knower of Brahm. In base and unholy company — thief, adulterer and gambler, cheat, highwayman, drunkard and the proud. Each takes pleasure in his own colour and company; but that is poison — the Gurmukh knows the state the Guru's wisdom gives.

As the eight metals, cast into a boat, are ferried across, yet are still the same on this side and that; as the same metal in the fire takes the form of fire, yet remains itself, only shaped anew; as the same metal, touched by the touchstone, becomes gold, and gains a matchless, priceless form — so, touching the supreme touchstone, the Guru, one becomes touchstone too; the company being the holy company, the true company, strung as one.

As when a house catches fire, the loving neighbour runs in and puts out the flames, saving the beloved within; as, when the cattle are stolen, the herdsman raises the cry, and the village, rallying, quickly wins them back; as, when one drowns in a mighty current, a swimmer, seeing him, brings him from this shore to that — so at the last hour, when death's noose and the serpent of Time seize one, the Guru's Sikhs, the saints, the holy, undo the peril.

Without desire, without anger, without greed, without attachment, without 'mine,' without habit, without fault — so He dwells. Unstained, in the state of freedom, spotless, without enmity, without hindrance, needing no prop, undying. Needing no food, needing no support, formless, without flaw, unshaken, without doubt, fearless, without craving. Without deeds, without illusion, without shame, without appetite, without dispute, immaculate — a renouncer in the Void.

The Gurmukh, his mind on the Word, in the holy company — a marvel-beyond-marvels love shines forth in full. In the colour of love are countless colours, like the waves of the Ganga; in the taste of love, countless tastes at play. In the fragrance of love, fragrance meeting fragrance a million times; in the hearing of love, countless unstruck strains break forth in joy. Love untouchable, tender and cool — the untellable tale of delight, a wondrous, marvel-filled faith.

No colour equals the colour of love; no other taste is like the taste of love. No fragrance equals the fragrance of love; no lordship equals the lordship of love. No weight can be set against love, no scale can measure it; every treasure together cannot equal the price of love. One word of love — no word can equal it; a million powers of knowing fall still before it.

The praise of the lotus-feet of the perfect Brahm, the Guru — its joy, its ease, its wonder are a million-fold. A million million splendours, and one is drawn in longing; a million million beauties, and one is enchanted by the beauty. Its tenderness makes a million tumble in longing for the tender; its coolness makes a million seek its shelter, lost in it. A million nectars, the unstruck sound, the heart brimming over — the bee-mind fits itself into that cup.

As one asleep would see the painted play of a dream, so in natural trance shines the Light beyond the mind. As the drunkard is glad in the taste of the wine, so the endless boundless stream dawns as fearless awareness. As a child would want the sound and lore of words, so the unstruck ringing sounds in the ear of awareness. The untellable tale of delight — only he knows it in whom it passes, as the sandal's scent is not known to the tree that bears it.

The power of the taste of love — only he knows it in whom it passes, though the world calls him drunk, wine-mad with love. Reeling like one wounded, red-eyed, he wanders; friend and foe alike, shameless past all shame. His tongue relishes the untellable tale, yet takes the vow of silence — empty of every other taste, this is his only answer. His awareness drawn inward, praise and blame the same, his steps unsteady — everywhere, he is lost in wonder.

A little starter, and the milk becomes curd; a little sour whey, and the milk splits and spoils. A little seed sown, and a spreading tree grows; a little spark, and all is turned to ash. A little poison eaten brings the hour of ruin; a little nectar, and the body becomes deathless. The company of the unholy and the holy — like the harlot and the wedded wife — in a moment brings good, or the stroke of ruin.

In the holy company, sight and darshan are the meditation of Brahm; in unholy company, the very same sight is corruption. In the holy company, the mind on the Word is the knowledge of Brahm; in unholy company, the same is dispute and pride. In the holy company, food and clothing are the great sacrament; in unholy company, the same food turns bitter. Base-mindedness is birth and death in unholy company; the Guru's wisdom in the holy company is the door of freedom.

By the Guru's wisdom the outward eye becomes the divine eye; by base-mindedness, eyes and all, one is a blind wall. By the Guru's wisdom, awareness opens the diamond-hard doors; by base-mindedness, those hard doors stay sealed. By the Guru's wisdom, the treasure-nectar of love's taste is drunk; by base-mindedness, the mouth is foul with bitter words. By the Guru's wisdom, natural ease, untouched by joy or grief; by base-mindedness, the meeting-ground of quarrel, strife and rage.

Base-mindedness and the Guru's wisdom, the company of the unholy and the holy: in the pull of lust, the one who keeps his vow of continence. In the fire of anger, the ease of contentment, freedom; in the waves of greed, the steady soul of dharma. Amid Maya's attachment and malice, holding to the highest good; against the habit of ego, the saint melts with mercy. Bad deed and good deed in the heart, friend and foe by nature — the root-mantra of doing good, or the root of corruption.

In the Sikh's heart the True Guru first dwells by grace, and then, in kindness, brings him to obey His command. Obeying, he wins the Guru's knowledge, the supreme treasure as a gift — the Gurmukh's fruit of bliss, his own true state. The Name, the home of desirelessness, love fixed in natural trance — the unreachable, unfathomable tale cannot be told. With whatever love one worships the lotus-feet, the whole world's every wish is fulfilled.

As, meeting her beloved, the wife conceives and, growing meek, her longings are set before her in food and drink; as, a son born, she keeps to careful food and drink, and for the son's sake gives up all delicacies and tastes — so, at the refuge of the Guru's feet, one's longing fulfilled, the Name, the home of desirelessness, clings to nothing else. In the dark night of the ocean of the world, conquering the five thieves, the Sikh alone stays wide awake.

Cherishing the True Guru's command, the child-like Sikh — the glory of the dust of his lotus-feet is boundless. Shiva, the sons of Sanak, Brahma cannot reach it; scripture and Shesh-Nag utter only 'not this, not this.' The four boons, the three times, the three worlds long for it; yoga and pleasure, the heavenly river, the world's own faith. Worshipped by the worshipful, he makes the pure holy — the untellable tale, a spotless, spreading thought.

Tasting the Gurmukh's fruit of bliss, all is turned around — the aging body, the mind risen beyond the mind, content. Base-mindedness is overturned, the Guru's wisdom in the heart; the wicked are now known as good people. From worldly, turned right around to the Formless One's; from the crane's brood to swans, by the True Guru's knowledge. Bowed to the Cause, the meek become the Cause of causes — He who destroys and sustains — and the Unseen's secret is shown.

Tasting the Gurmukh's fruit of bliss, all is overturned — from the born to the birthless, from caste to casteless. From mere creatures to saints, from the perishable to the imperishable; the base and unholy become saints, grown skilled. From the greedy and low, they are made worthy of worship; in a world of soot, they are given the immaculate, the flawless. Cutting Maya's noose, He made them detached within the Guru's home — practising the fearless, steeped in the Beloved's love.

The True Guru's darshan and meditation, a wonder — beholding it, one is past all six schools of sight. At the refuge of the True Guru's feet, the home of desirelessness, the servant loves no service of any other god. His mind on the True Guru's Word, the root-mantra — the Sikhs have no faith in any other spell or charm. By the True Guru's grace, the holy company, the shared row of bliss — the swan-line at Mansarovar looks nowhere else.

Leaving the egg in the nest, the bird flies the skies, and at dusk, remembering the egg, comes home again. Leaving wife and son, a man goes into the forest, yet, his mind on the son, comes home and finds joy. As a water-creature is loosed into a pool, and, whenever one wishes, is caught again as the heart pleases — so the fickle mind wanders the four quarters, but the True Guru, the ship, the swift bird, holds it steady.

No caste of the four castes is a caste like this; no sight of the six schools holds this Light of darshan. Not in Smriti, Puran, Veda, Shastra alike, not in melody, sound and song does the Word dawn like this. Not in countless dishes and their tastes is this taste of love; not in all fragrances is this fragrance found. Not in warmth or coolness, touch or the untouchable — nothing is warp and weft equal to the Gurmukh's fruit of bliss.

Writing and reading reach only as far as a distant land, so long as one speaks and hears the messages of abroad. Seeing and being seen make a here and a there, two — meeting each other only in the fever of longing. Losing and losing, the seeker searches the four quarters, like the deer that does not know the musk lies within it. Where Guru and Sikh meet, the Inner Knower is within — master and servant, service, in unbroken homage.

The lamp and the moth share a one-sided love; the moon and the partridge, the cloud and the rain-bird, do not. The chakwi and the sun, the fish in the water, the lotus and the bee, the wood and the fire, the deer and the sound — each has its single love. Father and son's affection, wife and husband's bond, the tie of Maya and the world's door — these do not lift their stain. But the power of meeting in the Guru's Sikh company is true — warp and weft, a giver of joy in this world and the next.

Among people, worldly ways of many kinds — know their love a hollow dealing, a giver of pain. Within the bounds of the Veda, countless tales are told; heard, that love is not felt, not held in the mind. Not in the measure of knowledge, nor among the world's devotees, not in melody and sound, is its beginning or end ever known. The power of meeting in the Guru's Sikh company is such that its like is not to be found anywhere in the three worlds.
