When the perfect Brahm, the Guru, shows His full grace, He takes away the disease of ego and humility comes to dwell in the heart. The mind fixed on the Word, meeting the holy company, in loving devotion, double-mindedness is destroyed. Drinking the treasure-nectar of love to the full, in a wondrous faith, one practises the fearless awareness. In natural ease and joy, the mind past all worry — true to the True Guru, by the Guru's wisdom, a servant of the Guru.

The Gurmukh, his mind on the Word in the holy company, past the three qualities, empty of hope amid hope. The Name, the home of desirelessness, natural ease in the heart, living in the present, the dawning of knowledge. Subtle and vast, the One, the One and the many made one, the discernment of Brahm his single support, the sure knowledge of Brahm. His love fixed at the refuge of the feet, losing the self, becoming the dust — true to the True Guru, by the Guru's wisdom, a servant of the Guru.

By ego and pride, by ignorance and disrespect, by slandering the Guru — one bears the name 'servant of the Guru' in name alone. Poison is called sweet; she who has left is called the one who has come; the angry wife is called pleased — it turns into mockery. The barren is called mother of a son, the forsaken a happy bride; bad conduct is called good, and the disgraced meet ruin. The madman is called simple, the blind called clear-sighted — as beside the sandal the bamboo takes no fragrance.

The power of meeting in the Guru's Sikh company is great — grown radiant in loving devotion and eager joy. Their gaze fixed on the darshan, a marvel; their words, like the betel's red, grow bright with colour. Their mind on the Word, the fish's way in water, drinking the treasure-nectar of love, full of relish. A store of beauty; a million splendours seek its shelter; the shade of a million beauties hides before its beauty — how radiant they are.

Guru and Sikh made one — the untellable tale of a single pore; in the holy company the Guru's Sikh gains its glory. The spread of the one Ik Onkar has no far shore; the mind on the Word merges in the holy company. The perfect Brahm, the Guru, dwells in the holy company; servant of the servants, holding no thought of self. The True Guru, the Guru, the Guru's Sikh, the holy company — warp and weft, His Light is His and His alone.

Air meeting air is not seen; water meeting water cannot be told apart. When Light meets Light, how could they be kept separate; when ash mingles with ash, how could one tell them? How does the play of the five elements come together; and when body and breath part, how could body and breath be reckoned? The unseen state, an utter marvel, a wonder — how could its immeasurable knowing and meditation be held in the heart?

Not in the four quarters, the seven islands, the nine regions; not in the ten directions is it seen, not in forest or home. Not by the knowledge of people and Vedas is it seen or heard; not in heaven, the netherworld or the mortal realm is it found. Not in past, future or present, not in the four ages, the four castes, the six schools is it held in meditation. The power of meeting in the Guru-Sikh company is such — its like is neither heard of nor known in any other place.

In the cane is the nectar-juice, but without a tongue; the sandal's fragrance is there, but without a nose. The wondrous state is beyond sound and awareness; the Light is there, of many colours, but without an eye. The touchstone touches without a hand's touch, without warm or cold; the healing herb rises from the earth, though it has no feet. How, then, are the five faults let go and the flawless freedom won — how is the Gurmukh, in natural contentment, kept untouched?

Fruitless the tongue that is empty of the taste of the Word; fruitless the awareness without the unstruck sound. Fruitless the eye that does not behold its own Self; fruitless the breath without the supreme fragrance. Fruitless the hand without the touch of the Guru, the touchstone; without the Gurmukh's path, the feet's steps are in vain. But limb by limb, when the Gurmukh's every part is fixed in love — the eye's sight, the ear's awareness — these are the grace of the holy company.

Between the body of one who lives by raw instinct and the human, this alone is the difference: whether or not the Word is held, with understanding, in the mind. The creature of instinct, told to move, hears and heeds not; the human birth holds the teaching firm in the heart. The creature of instinct, without the Word, cannot speak with its tongue; the human birth speaks words without number. Hearing and understanding, the discerning one speaks the Word; without it, the unheeding one is no better than a creature of raw instinct.

The body of the creature without the Word is yet pure — it eats grass, and its purpose is the flow of milk, like nectar. Its dung and its use become supremely pure; yet the human body, without the Word, misses the very nectar it might drink. By the support of the discerning Word the striving became saints; without it, harsh and base, one hides ruin in one's words. The tongue that relishes the nectar-taste becomes an elixir; but the human who holds harsh poison lets that poison burn.

The creature grazes on grass, yet, empty of the Word, keeps the greatness of silence — and its milk flows like nectar. Countless sweets and drinks fill the human mouth; the tongue, made to relish, serves it well. But the support of the discerning Word is the fruit of the human birth; without the Word, one stays bound to the measure of instinct. The human birth, empty of the discerning Word, becomes a bearer of harsh poison, the mind bewildered in its longing.

In darshan and its meditation, longing pierces the eyes; in the sweet word, longing pierces the ears. In union and communion, longing pierces the tongue — the touchstone's touch, the fashioning of the embrace. In the going to the bed, longing pierces the feet; in the taste of love, longing runs true through every limb. Pore by pore, undone by the ache of longing, she is stricken — like the hare cut off from the herd, the pain fierce upon her.

At the slightest merciful glance, the matchless-faced one, an utter wonder, is called the beloved bride. In the pupil of the eye, a tiny dark star; its reflection, a sesame-mark, has made her the bride. A million million beauties hide in the shade of that sesame-seed; a million million splendours are enchanted by its charm. She became the beloved of the Lord of a million universes; the tilak of that sesame wiped away all other brides.

A dream's play, a wondrous painted form was fashioned — 'my pure, holy friend has come to me today.' Supremely merciful, with wide red eyes and a mouth of nectar-words, he made me drink the sweetest honey. Adorning the couch, granting his embrace in love-play, in the taste of love, a wonder, we merged in natural ease. Then, hearing the rain-bird's cry, my eyes flew open — the fish's way, longing woke me from the water.

The eye has no sight to see, no darshan to give — how could the Beloved's darshan be seen and shown? There is no awareness to speak, no ear to hear — how could the ocean of virtues' virtues be heard and told? There is no Guru's wisdom in the mind, no mind in the Guru's wisdom; unsteady, the love beyond the mind cannot be fixed. Broken in every limb, low in colour and form, without lineage, meek — how could I be called the bride of the great Lord?

Aching with the disease of separation, the parted wife sends her message with the passing travellers, on a sigh: 'Behold — even among the lowly creatures, for love the dove, seeing another's hand upon its mate, drops as from the sky. You are the store of all fourteen sciences, my Beloved — will you not save your bride from the terror of separation, that foe?' Turned from the feet, the pain undone by a wonder — beholding him, she is lost, as darkness fades at the sun's darshan.

Whomever the Beloved loves, seeing and being seen, he gives her his own sight and darshan, and adorns her with grace. Whomever the Beloved loves, to her he speaks his word; her mind on the Word, the Guru's knowledge is born. Whomever the Beloved loves, he makes known in the ten directions — she is called the bride of the great Lord. Whomever the Beloved loves, he grants his couch — held by the taste of love, he makes her drink the undrinkable.

Whomever the Beloved loves, she is adorned with beauty — she is called the fair one, radiant with charm. Whomever the Beloved loves, he makes his fashioned bride — she is called his wife, bright in colour. Whomever the Beloved loves, he fulfils her every longing — she is called the good one, gentle in her virtue. Whomever the Beloved loves, he takes her and makes her drink the taste of love — she is called the loving one, full of relish.

Sick with the pang of separation, pale-white, she tears the paper to shreds to write her letter from afar. In the fire of separation, her fair flesh grown dark, the parted wife takes the garb of grief, her message hard to bear. Her breast breaks with the writing of the disease of separation; weeping, she writes, from the fever of her soul. Aching, her sighs breaking forth in grief — how could the parted wife live, with separation lodged within?

By a bond formed of old, the good ones meet in betrothal, remembering, hearing again and again the message in the ear. Wed by the ordained way, meeting in sight and darshan, the present love in meditation — its taste, form, colour and garb. In the hour of rest at night, the Word, the discerning support, the knowledge of the soul entering the Supreme Soul. Passing beyond knowledge, meditation and remembrance, made one, held by the taste of love in a wondrous absorption.

She who is favoured above all the many brides, on whom the Merciful, kind to the meek, has shown His grace: 'My friend, the night, the moon, the hour of love's taste' — meek and lowly, she speaks her plea. 'Whatever is commanded, that I obey and honour' — hands folded, she stands before Him, obedient. In loving devotion, radiant with eager joy, she cries: 'Blessed my birth, made worthy — blessed, today my turn has come.'

In the pupil of the Beloved's eye, a tiny dark star; its reflection, a sesame-mark, the tilak of the three worlds. Set plain upon the bride's face, it makes a million Kamadevs tumble at the mere beholding. A million million matchless forms and beauties, the adornment of every adornment, the sum of all. At the slightest gracious glance, the boundless glory of that sesame breaks the pride of a million Saraswatis and the thought of Kamadeva.

The darshan and meditation of the beloved Guru — the six schools' sight cannot see it; He shows an equal vision through all sight. The beloved Guru's Word — the five-fold Word's knowledge reaches it; He makes plain the unstruck strain within every word. The mantra, the teaching, entered and absorbed in the heart, homage to the Primal One — Brahm made Brahm-like. Knowledge, meditation, remembrance, relishing the taste of love, He makes plain the discernment of the one and the many.

Without truth, no discipline; without honour, no worship; without purity, no cleanliness; the sacred thread without continence is worthless. Without the Guru's initiation, no knowledge; without darshan, no meditation; without love, no devotion; the telling, without awe, is dry. Without contentment, no peace; without natural ease, no joy; without the mind on the Word, love has no skill. Without the discernment of Brahm, the heart holds no single support; without the holy company, love is not steeped in its colour.

Drawn to the nectar-taste of the lotus-feet, to those lotus-feet he is the world's bee. Hearing the ring of the beloved Guru's Word, his heart brims over; his nectar-words carry the world across. At the slightest gracious glance, the Guru, the store of mercy, the giver of every treasure, takes away fault, pain and grief. The slave of the slaves of the slaves of the beloved Guru's slaves — not Indra, not Brahma, is equal to him.

Since coming to the refuge of the supreme Guru's feet, the whole world's love is fixed at the refuge of those feet. The honey of the lotus-feet, the nectar of the feet — all creation longs for the dust of those feet. The lotus-feet, the cup of bliss, the home of natural ease; steadied wisdom, the thought of the highest good. The glory of the Guru's lotus-feet is wisdom past all measure — 'not this, not this,' homage, homage, all reverence.

Since the Guru's lotus-feet came to dwell in the heart, the mind is steady and runs nowhere else. The honey of the lotus-feet, the nectar of the feet, the deathless state won, one merges in natural ease. The bliss of the lotus-feet came to dwell in the mind; leaving all other joys, he fixes his love on the Name of Hari. The fragrance of the lotus-feet's honey took up its home — every other scent grew stale, no longer pleasing the heart.

The turn of the beloved bride of the great Lord came, but sleep, growing strong, came over her eyes. The loving, faithful wife, eager for the Beloved's coming, scorns that sleep, and does not sleep, in her love and awe. Her friend who was sleeping found it a comfort — kept where she was, lulled together in union. But in the dream's play she was not let meet her friend; the night, like Yama, would not pass or come to an end.

Without beauty, without lineage, without virtue, without knowledge, without glory, without fortune, without austerity, a madwoman; without sight and darshan, without the mind on the Word, without strength of intellect — even hand and foot are not straight. Without love, without conduct, without loving-awe or trust, without heart, without wealth, without natural grace; broken in every limb, meek and lowly, a stranger — not fit to touch the refuge of the feet: how could I win You?

If the mother gives her son poison, for what love should she keep him? If the watchman robs the house, how, tell me, is it to be guarded? If the boatman sinks the boat, how could one reach the shore; if the guide breaks the path, to whom does the meek one speak? If the very fence eats the field, who will run to save it; if the sovereign does injustice, whom does one ask for witness? If the physician kills the sick, if the friend does treachery — if the Guru grant no freedom, of whom does one make one's wish?

The bee-mind wanders the four quarters; let it fold into the cup of the bliss of the lotus-feet. Cool and fragrant, most tender, of matchless form, the honey-nectar taste — let it run nowhere else. Natural trance, the state beyond the mind, the shimmering Light, the unstruck sound ringing — fix your love there. The Gurmukh, all the many become the one Lord, 'I am He, He is I' — knowing the Self, one wins the boundless supreme state.

The deer-mind, the musk within it, forgets its own inner state, and, deluded, wanders searching through the wood. Like the frog and the lotus in one same pool, dwelling within yet as if a world apart, it does not understand. As the poison-snake will not leave its bitter poison, day and night coiling round the sandal-tree — so, like a king who in a dream becomes a beggar, the Gurmukh, in the world, wipes away the delusion.

The whirlwind, becoming wind, spins through the region of air — but what of it, if it knows not how to wake the fire of longing? The well-water, though tied and drawn up, does not become the sea; the kite that flies is not reckoned the king of birds. The mouse digging its hole makes no yogi's cave; the snake, long-lived, is not made mighty by its poison. But the Gurmukh, past the three qualities, his mind grown detached, losing ego, becoming the dust — is honoured as the wish-cow.

The mind on the Word, where Guru and Sikh meet, the soul enters, skilled in the Supreme Soul. Essence meeting essence, the swati-drop become a pearl, the touchstone touching touchstone, each made the other. As Light meeting Light, lamp shining from lamp, as diamond pierces diamond — the Self knows itself. The sandal's fragrance entering the plants; the people of the four castes, of every caste, made casteless.

The Guru's wisdom true in the heart, the eye beholds the form of Truth; the True Name, the tongue finds the taste of love. The discernment of the Word true, the ear's awareness of the sound; the nose fed full on the true fragrance. The saint's foot-nectar, the hand's true support; touching the touchstone, one is shown made touchstone too. Form of Truth, Name of Truth, the True Guru's knowledge and meditation — where Guru and Sikh meet, the Unseen is shown.

The three-fold soul, from here and there, is drawn into one; by the Guru's wisdom, true and unshaken, the mind is content. The Life of the world in the world, the world in the Life of the world — the perfect Brahm's knowledge and meditation brought into the heart. Subtle and vast, the Root, the One and the many made one — like milk in the cattle-kind, known through love. The Cause within the cause, the painter within the painting, the ringing within the instrument — known as the maker of His people.

There is one Lord and eight brides, and each single bride has five and five sons. Each single son a house, four and four grandsons; each single grandson born of two wives. From them again, one and one, five and five; from them, four and four sons, a lineage sprung. From them, eight and eight daughters, and each daughter eight sons — how could such a family ever be strung on one thread?

One mind, into eight parts; each part five pieces; each piece four bits; each bit split in two. From them, coins upon coins — one paisa five tanks, each tank four mashas, of many kinds. One masha eight rattis, each ratti eight rice-grains — shop by shop, grain by grain, weighed on the scale. Filling and filling, He pervades the whole world entire — how could He be held, whose expanse is so vast?

The king of birds, mighty and valiant, the supreme swan, clever, four-faced, fickle and quick. Strong-armed, eight arms and forty hands, one hundred and sixty feet, ever moving, restless. Waking and dreaming, day and night, it runs the ten directions; in one instant it comes and goes through the three worlds. Though it sits within the cage, no bird in flight can reach where it goes — filling all, mountain and tree, land and water.

As a bird flies wandering the skies, then is snared and kept, brought into a cage; as the lordly elephant, drunk in the deep forest, is subdued and heeds the mahout's goad; as the poison-snake, seized in its hard hole in the depths, obeys the charmer for the sake of the spell — so the fickle mind, wandering through the three worlds, is made steady by the wisdom of the True Guru.

The play of creation, a wondrous, marvellous painting, is one, yet of countless kinds and endless forms. In the eyes He set sight, in the ears awareness, in the nose fragrance, in the tongue the utterance of taste. Within and within, unbroken through the channels — none knows another's; the thought is deep and hard. The unreachable play, the painting — how to know the painter? 'Not this, not this, not this' — homage, homage, all reverence.

Maya's shadow, the five thieves, the ghost of frenzy hold sway; in every heart's small vessel is an ocean without number. From this moment to the ages' end, in the waves and ripples of hope, there is no resting-place from craving. The mind's wanting runs the four quarters after its objects; in an instant it ranges the realms and the universe. To tame the unruly mind, sick in body, mind and circumstance, there is one refuge alone — the feet of the Guru.
