1 · Invocation — the Guru's Praise
pātisāhā pātisāhu sat suhāṇīai | vaḍā beparavāhu ant na jāṇīai | laubālī daragāh ākh vakhāṇīai | kudarat agam athāhu choj viḍāṇīai | sachī siphat salāh akath kahāṇīai | satigur sache vāhu sad kurabāṇīai |1|
Emperor of emperors, true and lovely; great, carefree, and nobody knows where He ends; His Court is a carefree Court, so it is told; His power is past reaching and past sounding, and His plays are wonderful; true is His praise and adoration, and the story cannot be told. To the True Guru's 'Vah!' — 'Wonderful!' — I give myself forever.
2 · The Greatness of the Primal Being
brahame bisan mahes lakh dhiāide | nārad sārad ses kīrat gāide | gaṇ gandharab gaṇes nād vajāide | chhia darasan kar ves sāṅg baṇāide | gur chele upades karam kamāide | ād purakh ādes pār na pāide |2|
A hundred thousand Brahmas, Vishnus and Maheshs meditate on Him; Narad, Sarada and Shesh the serpent sing His praise; the spirit-hosts, the heavenly singers and Ganesh sound their music; the six schools of philosophy put on their costumes and make their shows; guru and disciple do the deeds they were taught; homage to the First Being — and still they never find His far shore.
3 · The Same
pīr paikambar hoi karade bandagī | sekh masāik hoi kar muhachhandagī | gaus kutab kaī loi dar bakhasandagī | dar daraves khaloi masat masandagī | valī ulah suṇ soi karan pasandagī | daragah viralā koi bakhat balandagī |3| |3|
Becoming Muslim masters and prophets, they do their devotion; becoming sheikhs and holy men, they live depending on Him; holy men of every rank, in many lands, beg forgiveness at His door; wandering dervishes stand at the door, absorbed and glad; the friends of God, hearing of Him, seek what pleases Him; rare in the Court is the one of high good fortune.
4 · They Know Not the Creator
suṇ ākhāṇ vakhāṇ ākh vakhāṇiā | hindū musalamāṇ na sach siñāṇiā | daragah pat paravāṇ māṇ nimāṇiā | ved kateb kurāṇ na akhar jāṇiā | dīn dunī hairāṇ choj viḍāṇiā | kādar no kurabāṇ kudarat māṇiā |4|
Hearing the story, they tell what they have heard; Hindu and Muslim have not known the Truth; what is accepted and honoured in the Court is the honour of the lowly; the Veda, the scriptures and the Quran have not known one letter of Him; faith and the world stand astonished at His wonderful plays. To the Creator I give myself; I have enjoyed His power.
5 · Lovers of Taste Miss the Palace
lakh lakh rūp sarūp anūp sidhāvahī | raṅg biraṅg suraṅg taraṅg baṇāvahī | rāg nād visamād guṇ nidh gāvahī | ras kas lakh suād chakh chakhāvahī | gandh sugandh karoṛ mah mahakāvahī | gair mahal sulatān mahal na pāvahī |5|
A hundred thousand upon a hundred thousand forms, matchless beauties, pass by; colours and shades and lovely waves they make; melody and tune, wonder, and the treasure of goodness they sing; a hundred thousand tastes and flavours they taste and give others to taste; millions of scents and fragrances they make sweet — and yet, outside the palace, they never win the Sultan's palace.
6 · Seeing Two, and Seeing One
siv sakatī dā mel dubidhā hovaī | traiguṇ māiā khel bhar bhar dhovaī | chār padārath bhel hār parovaī | pañj tat paravel ant vigovaī | chhia rut bārah māh has has rovaī | ridh sidh nav nidh nīd na sovaī |6|
The meeting of Shiva and his power makes the two-ness; the three-fold play of maya fills and washes; the four great gifts it strings into a necklace; the five elements, woven together, come apart in the end; through six seasons and twelve months it laughs and weeps; wealth-powers, miracle powers and the nine treasures let nobody sleep.
7 · Without Loving Devotion, All is Hollow
sahas siāṇap lakh kamm na āvahī | giān dhiān unamān ant na pāvahī | lakh sasīar lakh bhān ahinis dhyāvahī | lakh parakirat parāṇ karam kamāvahī | lakh lakh garab gumān laj lajāvahī | lakh lakh dīn īmān tāṛī lāvahī | bhāu bhagat bhagavān sach samāvahī |7|
A thousand clevernesses, a hundred thousand of them, are of no use; knowledge, meditation and rapture never reach His end; a hundred thousand moons and suns meditate day and night; a hundred thousand natures and lives do their deeds; a hundred thousand kinds of pride and conceit are shamed; a hundred thousand faiths and creeds sit in their trances — only loving devotion to God merges into Truth.
8 · Without Loving Devotion, Only Pastimes
lakh pīr patisāh parache lāvahī | jog bhog lakh rāh saṅg chalāvahī | dīn dunī asagāh hāth na pāvahī | kaṭak murīd panāh sev kamāvahī | ant na siphat salāh ākh suṇāvahī | laubālī daragāh khaṛe dhiāvahī |8|
A hundred thousand masters and kings amuse themselves; a hundred thousand paths of yoga and enjoyment they set going; faith and the world are past sounding — they never touch the bottom; armies of disciples, in shelter, earn their service; there is no end to His praise and adoration, and they tell it and hear it; at the carefree Court they stand and meditate.
9 · The Same
lakh sāhib siradār āvaṇ jāvaṇe | lakh vaḍe darabār baṇat baṇāvaṇe | darab bhare bhaṇḍār gaṇat gaṇāvaṇe | paravārai sādhār birad sadāvaṇe | lobh moh ahaṅkār dhoh kamāvaṇe | karade chār vīchār dahadis dhāvaṇe | lakh lakh bujarakavār man parachāvaṇe |9|
A hundred thousand masters and chiefs come and go; a hundred thousand great courts are staged; treasuries filled with wealth are counted and reckoned up; those who support their families are called of noble nature; in greed, clinging, pride and deceit they do their doings; making a show of good thought, they run off in ten directions; a hundred thousand upon a hundred thousand elders amuse their minds.
10 · Other Pastimes
lakh dāte dātār maṅg maṅg devahī | autar lakh avatār kār karevahī | ant na pārāvār khevaṭ khevahī | vīchārī vīchār bhet na devahī | karatūtī āchār kar jas levahī | lakh lakh jevaṇahār jevaṇ jevahī | lakh daragah darabār sevak sevahī |10|
A hundred thousand givers give what they beg and beg again; a hundred thousand comings-down of God descend and do their work; without end and without shore, the boatmen ferry; the thinkers think and still do not give up the mystery; by their deeds and their conduct they win praise; a hundred thousand feasters eat their feasts; a hundred thousand courts and gatherings — and the servants serve.
11 · The Same
sūr vīr varīām jor jaṇāvahī | suṇ suṇ surate lakh ākh suṇāvahī | khojī khojan khoj dahidis dhāvahī | chir jīvai lakh hoi na oṛak pāvahī | khare siāṇe hoi na man samajhāvahī | laubālī daragāh choṭā khāvahī |11|
Heroes and brave warriors show their strength; hearing and hearing, a hundred thousand listeners tell what they heard; seekers seek and search, running in ten directions; a hundred thousand live long, and still never reach the end; grown very clever, they never teach their own minds; at the carefree Court they take their blows.
12 · The Pain of Ego, the Peace of Patience
hikamat lakh hakīm chalat baṇāvahī | ākal hoi phahīm mate matāvahī | gāphal hoi ganīm vād vadhāvahī | laṛ laṛ karan muhīm āp gaṇāvahī | hoi jadīd kadīm na khudī miṭāvahī | sābar hoi halīm āp gavāvahī |12|
A hundred thousand doctors make their cunning cures; the wise and the clever hold their councils; the heedless, turned enemies, swell the strife; fighting and fighting they wage their campaigns, making a show of themselves; grown new or grown old, they never rub out their pride; but the patient one, grown humble, loses himself.
13 · When Ego Goes, Salvation Comes
lakh lakh pīr murīd mel milāvahī | suhade lakh sahīd jārat lāvahī | lakh roje lakh īd nivāj karāvahī | kar kar guphat sunīd man parachāvahī | hujare kulaph kulīd juhad kamāvahī | dar daraves rasīd na āp jaṇāvahī |13|
A hundred thousand masters and disciples are joined; the wretched, and a hundred thousand martyrs, make their pilgrimages; a hundred thousand fasts and a hundred thousand Eids, and they say their prayers; making talk and hearsay, they amuse the mind; locked in cells with the key of striving, they toil; and reaching the door of the holy beggar, he makes no show of himself.
14 · The Worldly are Frightful
uche mahal usār vichhāi vichhāvaṇe | vaḍe dunīādār nāu gaṇāvaṇe | kar gaṛ koṭ hajār rāj kamāvaṇe | lakh lakh manasabadār vajah vadhāvaṇe | pūr bhare ahaṅkār āvan jāvaṇe | tit sache darabār khare ḍarāvaṇe |14|
Raising high palaces, spreading out their spreads; the great worldly ones make sure their names are counted; making a thousand forts and castles, they rule their lands; a hundred thousand officers swell their salaries; boatloads filled with pride, they come and go; and at that true Court they stand in dread.
15 · Hypocrisy
tīrath lakh karoṛ purabī nāvaṇā | devī dev sathān sev karāvaṇā | jap tap sañjam lakh sādh sadhāvaṇā | hom jag naīved bhog lagāvaṇā | varat nem lakh dān karam kamāvaṇā | laubālī daragāh pakhaṇḍ na jāvaṇā |15|
Bathing at millions of holy places on festival days; serving at the seats of gods and goddesses; a hundred thousand chants, hard disciplines and penances, straining; fire-offerings, sacrifices and food laid out; a hundred thousand fasts, vows and gifts, and deeds done — and at the carefree Court, none of that pretence gets through.
16 · The Servant is Highest of All
popalīā bharanāl lakh tarandīā | oṛak oṛak bhāl sudh na lahandīā | anal manal kar khiāl umag uḍandīān | uchhal karan uchhāl na ubh chaṛhandīā | lakh agās patāl kar muhachhandīān | daragah ik ravāl bande bandīā |16|
The floating gourds bob, a hundred thousand of them, on the ocean; seeking end after end, they find no wisdom; imagining themselves the fabled anal-bird, they rise in longing flight; leaping, they make their leaps, and never rise to the height; a hundred thousand skies and lower worlds they make their servants — and yet one grain of dust of the Court is the servant of servants.
17 · The Divine Power
trrai guṇ māiā khel kar dekhāliā | khāṇī bāṇī chār chalat uṭhāliā | pañj tat utapat bandh bahāliā | chhia rut bārah māh siraj samhāliā | ahinis sūraj chand dīve bāliā | ik kavāu pasāu nadar nihāliā |17|
The three-fold play of maya He made and showed; the four ways of being born and the four kinds of speech He raised as a play; the five elements He fixed and set in place; six seasons and twelve months He made and tends; day and night He lit the lamps of sun and moon; and with one Word's expanse, He sees it all with a glance.
18 · He Himself is Untouched
His power, one Word, sets up and takes down; from it come a hundred thousand rivers, and their end is not seen; a hundred thousand universes are held, and no wave touches Him; making and making, He watches the play, blazing in a hundred thousand forms; who can set a meaning on it, of blessing or of curse? He feels no regret, for merit or for sin.
19 · Creator and Creation are Boundless
kudarat agam athāhu ant na pāīai | kādar beparavāh kin parachāīai | kevaḍ hai daragāh ākh suṇāīai | koi na dasai rāhu kit bidh jāīai | kevaḍ siphat salāh kiu kar dhiāīai | abigat gat asagāhu na alakh lakhāīai |19|
His power is past reaching and past sounding, and its end is not found; the Creator is carefree — what pleases Him? How great is His Court — tell it, and let it be heard? Nobody shows the road, or which way to go. How great is His praise and adoration, and how should we meditate? The state of the Hidden One is past sounding; the unseen is not shown.
20 · By the Guru's Grace
ād purakh paramād acharaj ākhīai | ād anīl anād sabad na sākhīai | varatai ād jugād na galī gākhīai | bhagat vachhal achhalād sahaj subhākhīai | unaman anahad nād liv abhilākhīai | visamādai visamād pūran pākhīai | pūrai gur parasād keval kākhīai |20|21|
The First Being, first of all, is called a wonder; first, stainless, without beginning, not caught by any word; He runs through everything from the beginning of the ages, and no talk can grasp Him; the lover of His devotees, never fooled, is sweetly told of; in delight, in the melody no one plays, the longing love is fixed; in wonder upon wonder, He fills the whole of it; and only by the perfect Guru's grace is He longed for.
