1 · Invocation — the Guru
sat rūp gur darasano pūran braham acharaj dikhāiā | satinām karatā purakh pārabraham paramesar dhiāiā | satigur sabad giān sach anahad dhun visamād suṇāiā | guramukh panth chalāion nām dān isanān driṛāiā | gur sikh de gur sikh kar sādhasaṅgat sachukhaṇḍ vasāiā | sach rās raharās de satigur sikh de pairī pāiā | charaṇ kaval pratāp jaṇāiā |1|
The Guru's face is the very form of Truth — the perfect Brahm showed a wonder. Satnam, the Creator-Being, the Highest One, the Lord beyond all — on Him he meditated. The knowledge of the True Guru's Word is true; the melody no one plays, a wonder, he sounded. He set the Gurmukh path going; the Name, the giving and the clean living he made firm. Making Gursikhs out of Gursikhs, he settled the holy company, the land of truth. Giving the capital of Truth as provision, the True Guru laid the Sikh at His feet. He made the glory of the lotus feet known.
2 · The Pilgrimage and the Holy One
tīrath nhātai pāp jān patit udhāraṇ nāu dharāiā | tīrath hon sakārathe sādh janān dā darasan pāiā | sādh hoe man sādhikai charaṇ kaval gur chit vasāiā | upamā sādh agādh bodh koṭ madhe ko sādh suṇāiā | gurasikh sādh asaṅkh jag dharamasāl thāi thāi suhāiā | pairī pai pair dhovaṇe charaṇodak lai pair pujāiā | guramukh sukh phal alakh lakhāiā |2|
Bathing at a holy place washes sin away, they say — and 'lifter of the fallen' is its name. But holy places are made fruitful by the sight of holy people. The holy become holy by disciplining the mind and setting the Guru's lotus feet in the heart. The praise of the holy is wisdom past sounding — out of millions, they say, one is a holy one. The Gursikh holy are past counting in the world, gracing houses of worship place by place. Falling at the feet, they wash the feet, and drink that water to honour them. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy shows the unseen.
3 · The Dust
pañj tat utapat kar guramukh dharatī āp gavāiā | charaṇ kaval saraṇāgatī sabh nidhān sabhe phal pāiā | lok ved gur giān vich sādhū dhūṛ jagat tarāiā | patit punīt karāikai pāvan purakh pavitr karāiā | charaṇodak mahimā amit sekh sahas mukh ant na pāiā | dhūṛī lekh miṭāiā charaṇodak man vasigat āiā | pairī pai jag charanī lāiā |3|
Making creation out of the five elements, the Gurmukh-earth loses itself. In the shelter of the lotus feet, all treasures and all fruits are won. In folk story, in Veda and in the Guru's knowledge, the dust of the holy ferries the world across. Making the fallen pure, the pure Being makes them holy. The glory of that foot-water is past measuring — Shesh the serpent, with a thousand mouths, never found its end. The dust rubbed out what was written; that water brought the mind under control. Falling at the feet, it laid the whole world at the feet.
4 · The Teaching From the Ganga
charaṇodak hoi surasarī taj baikuṇṭh dharat vich āī | nau sai nadī naṛinnavai aṭhasaṭh tīrath aṅg samāī | tihu loī paravāṇ hai mahādev lai sīs chaṛhāī | devī dev sarevade jai jai kār vaḍī vaḍiāī | saṇ gaṅgā baikuṇṭh lakh lakh baikuṇṭh nāth liv lāī | sādhū dhūṛ dulambh hai sādhasaṅgat satigur saraṇāī | charaṇ kaval dal kīm na pāī |4|
That foot-water became the Ganga; leaving heaven, it came down to the earth. Nine hundred and ninety-nine rivers and sixty-eight holy places merged into its body. Accepted in the three worlds, Mahadev carried it on his head. Gods and goddesses serve it; great is its glory, hail upon hail. Along with the Ganga, a hundred thousand heavens — and the Lord fixed His love on it. The dust of the holy is rare; the holy company is the True Guru's shelter. The petal of the lotus feet — no price is found for it.
5 · The Greatness of the Gurmukh's Fruit
charaṇ saraṇ jis lakhamī lakh kalā hoi lakhī na jāī | ridh sidh nidh sabh golīān sādhik sidh rahe lapaṭāī | chār varan chhia darasanā jatī satī nau nāth nivāī | tinn loa chaudah bhavan jal thal mahīal chhal kar chhāī | kavalāsaṇ kavalāpatī sādhasaṅgat saraṇāgat āī | pairī pai pākhāk hoi āp gavāi na āp gaṇāī | guramukh sukh phal vaḍī vaḍiāī |5|
He at whose feet the goddess of wealth takes shelter — her hundred thousand arts cannot be counted. Wealth-powers, miracle powers and treasure are all her servants; masters and seekers cling to her. The four castes, the six schools, those who keep celibate, the truthful, the nine Nath yogis — to her they bow. The three worlds, the fourteen realms, water, land and earth she spread over with illusion. And the lotus-throned One, the Lord of that goddess, came to the shelter of the holy company. Falling at the feet, becoming their dust, losing himself, he makes no show of himself. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is a great glory.
6 · The Glory of the Lotus-Feet — Bali
bāvan rūpī hoi kai bal chhal achhal āp chhalāiā | karon aḍhāī dharat maṅg pichho de vaḍ piṇḍ vadhāiā | dui karuvā kar tinn loa bal rāje phir magar miṇāiā | suragahu chaṅgā jāṇ kai rāj patāl lok dā pāiā | brahamā bisan mahes trai bhagat vachhal daravān sadāiā | bāvan lakh su pāvanā sādhasaṅgat raj ichh ichhāiā | sādhasaṅgat gur charan dhiāiā |6|
Becoming the dwarf, He outwitted Bali, who could not be outwitted, and let Himself be outwitted in return. Begging two and a half steps of earth, He then swelled His body vast. Taking the three worlds in two strides, He then measured out King Bali's own back. Thinking it better than heaven, He took the kingdom of the world below. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, the three — the lover of His devotees made them doorkeepers. The dust of the holy company fulfils every desire of countless pure ones. In the holy company, the Guru's feet are meditated on.
7 · Parasram, Who Came Down to Earth
sahas bāhu jamadagan ghar hoi parāhuṇachārī āiā | kāmadheṇ lobhāi kai jamadaganai dā sir vaḍhavāiā | piṭadī suṇ kai reṇukā parasarām dhāī kar dhāiā | ikīh vār karodh kar khatrī mār nikhatr gavāiā | charaṇ saraṇ phaṛ ubare dūjai kisai na khaṛag uchāiā | haumai mār na sakīā chirañjīv hui āp jaṇāiā | charaṇ kaval makarand na pāiā |7|
Sahasrabahu came as a guest to the house of the sage Jamadagni. Coveting the wish-granting cow, he had Jamadagni's head cut off. Hearing his mother Renuka wailing, Parasram rushed out in fury. Twenty-one times in his rage he slew the warriors and cleared the earth of them. Those who took hold of the shelter of the feet were saved; against them he never raised his sword. But he could not conquer his own pride; becoming immortal, he made a show of himself. He never found the honey of the lotus feet.
8 · The Dust — from Ramchandra

In the pleasure-palace, in colour and song, Dasrath and Kausalya took their joys. Talking it over together, delighted and eager, at ease: 'A son is born in our house — what name shall we give the child?' Taking the name 'Ramchandra', they became free of the three sorrows. Ram's reign is honoured in the world — a guardian of truth, contentment and right living. Free in the middle of maya, he seats the sage Vasishtha and hears the old stories. He spread the Ramayan; and the stone was ferried across, touched by his foot in an instant. The dust of the feet of the holy company sees everything.
9 · Krishna, Who Came Down to Earth

Krishna came down to earth; the tenth book tells his glory. Doing wonderful plays, he enjoyed yoga, pleasure, sweetness and delight. He had the Mahabharat waged, astonishing the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Indra and Brahma and the rest do not know the measure or the limit of his glory. Sharing out the tasks at the great royal sacrifice among kings and queens, he begged for the Lord's own work — this: to wash the feet and enjoy that water. In the holy company he knew the Guru's Word.
10 · God's Comings-Down Are Easy, the Guru's Feet Rare

Taking the fish-form, by his courage he saved the Vedas. Becoming the tortoise, he churned the ocean and spread the jewels through the world. Third, taking the boar-form, he saved the earth and killed the demon. Fourth, taking the man-lion form, he killed the demon and saved Prahlad. In one universe he came down ten times, in his pride. But the One who made millions of universes holds them in every pore of His skin. Millions upon millions of such — and Onkar adorned the forms. The Guru's lotus feet are past reaching, and boundless.
11 · The Guru's Feet are Highest

The law-books, the Vedas and the old holy stories all, hearing and hearing, recite their telling. Melody, tune and music, a hundred thousand of them — hearing that unplayed strain, they sing His praise. Shesh the serpent, and a hundred thousand sages like Lomas, fix their love on the state of the Hidden One. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, a hundred thousand of them, with all their knowledge and meditation, never find a seed's weight of His end. Gods and goddesses serve the unseen and unknowable — and their service never reaches Him. Gorakh, Machhendra, and a hundred thousand seekers and masters meditate, saying 'not this'. They speak of the Guru's lotus feet as past all reaching.
12 · Not the High but the Low are Worthy

A frown on the Brahmin's brow — meeting face to face, he changes his advice. The head, held high in pride, folds and tucks in its legs. Nobody worships the eyes, though they look about at 'mine and yours'. Nobody worships the nose, that swallows its own snot. Nobody worships the high ears, hearing praise and slander, good and bad. Nobody worships the speaking tongue, that tastes flavours, ringed round by teeth. It is the lowly feet that the hand worships.
13 · The Teaching From the Goat

The elephant is not eaten, in its pride; and nobody eats the mighty lion. But the humble goat wins greatness in faith and in the world. At a death and at a wedding it is honoured, accepted for the offering and the feast. Its meat is pure for the householder; its gut is drawn out to make the sounding string. Of its hide are made the shoes for the holy one's feet, fixed in love at the shelter of the feet; and drums and tabors are covered with it — the kirtan of the holy company gives joy. The holy company is the True Guru's shelter.
14 · The Human Body

All bodies bear no fruit, and this human body is the most impure. Many dishes, sweets and drinks turn to filth, urine and foulness inside it. Silks and fine robes are spoiled; betel and camphor turn to a stench in bad company. Distilled sandal and sweet oil turn to a foul smell, robbed of their fragrance. Kings wield their reigns, and emperors — and all die clashing. Without the holy company and the Guru's shelter, this human body bears no fruit. Better is the humility of the shelter of the feet.
15 · The Names of the Devotees

The Gurmukhs won the fruit of joy, coming to the holy company, the Guru's shelter. Dhru and Prahlad are told of, Ambarik and Bali, all devotees. The Sanak sages, Jaidev in the world, Balmik — the holy company ferried them across. Beni, Trilochan, Namdev, Dhanna and Sadhna are called devotees. Bhagat Kabir is told of, Ravidas the servant, and Bidar dear to the Guru. High-born, low-born and outcaste — the Gurmukhs fixed their minds on the lotus feet. Killing their pride, they were made plain to see.
16 · The Empty Talk of Hindu and Muslim

The people hear the Veda and speak; hearing and hearing, the learned tell out knowledge; the heaven-world and the mortal world — hearing of them, they still do not know the seven worlds below; past, future and present, beginning, middle and end — and they stand astonished; high, middle and low — they cannot grasp His wonderful plays; the three qualities of nature — restless, dark and calm — they hear of, and tell their tellings; in thought, word and deed they wander, and never know the holy company and the True Guru. Empty is the talk of Hindu and of Muslim.
17 · Right Living Through the Ages
satijug ik vigāṛadā tis pichhai phaṛ des pīṛāe | tretai nagarī vagalīai duāpar vans narak sahamāe | jo pheṛai so phaṛīdā kalijug sachā niāu karāe | satijug sat tretai jugā duāpar pūjā chār diṛāe | kalijug nāu arādhaṇā hor karam kar mukat na pāe | jug jug luṇīai bījiā pāp punn kar dukh sukh pāe | kalijug chitavai punn phal pāpahu lep adharam kamāe | guramukh sukh phal āp gavāe |17|
In the first age, one man's fault — and for it a whole land is seized and crushed. In the second age a city is besieged; in the third a whole dynasty is punished in hell. In the dark age, whoever offends is caught — the dark age does true justice. The first age fixed truth, the second age its rite, the third age set up worship. In the dark age it is the worship of the Name — by other deeds no freedom is found. Age by age you harvest what you sowed; by sin and by merit come sorrow and joy. In the dark age, whoever even thinks of a good deed gets its fruit, but is stained only by the wrong he actually does. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy loses the self.
18 · The Bull That Carries Right Living
satajug dā aniāu vekh dhaul dharam hoā uḍīṇā | surapat narapat chakravai rakh na haṅghan bal mat hīṇā | trete khisiā pair ik hom jag jug thāp patīṇā | duāpur dui pag dharam de pūjā chār pakhaṇḍ alīṇā | kalijug rahiā pair ik hoi nimāṇā dharam adhīṇā | māṇ nimāṇai satigurū sādhasaṅgat paragaṭ parabīṇā | guramukh dharam sapūraṇ rīṇā |18|
Seeing the injustice of the age, the bull that carries right living grew downcast. Indra, kings and emperors could not hold it up, weak and witless as they were. In the second age one foot slipped; fire-offerings and rites were set up to make it good. In the third age right living stood on two feet; worship-rites, mixed with pretence. In the dark age only one foot is left; humbled, right living is made subject. Honour for the lowly is the True Guru, made plain and skilled in the holy company. The Gurmukh's right living is complete, having become dust.
19 · The Gurmukh Path
chār varan ik varan kar varan avaran sādhasaṅg jāpai | chhia rutī chhia darasanā guramukh darasan sūraj thāpai | bārah panth miṭāi kai guramukh panth vaḍā paratāpai | ved katebahu bāharā anahad sabad agamm alāpai | pairī pai pākhāk hoi gurasikhā raharās pachhāpai | māiā vich udās kar āp gavāe japai ajāpai | laṅgh nikathai varai sarāpai |19|
Making the four castes into one caste, caste and outcaste come to know the holy company. The six seasons, the six schools — the Gurmukh's seeing sets up the sun. Rubbing out the twelve yogi sects, the Gurmukh path shines out great. Past the Vedas and the scriptures, it chants the unplayed, unreachable Word. Falling at the feet, becoming their dust, the Gursikhs know the Way. Free in the middle of maya, losing themselves, they do the chanting that is no chanting. Crossing over, it goes past both blessing and curse.
20 · King and Pauper are Equal
milade musalamān dui mil mil karan salāmālekī | jogī karan ades mil ād purakh ādes visekhī | sanniāsī kar onamo onam nārāiṇ bahu bhekhī | bāmhaṇ no kar namasakār kar āsīr vachan muhu dekhī | pairī pavaṇā satigurū gur sikhā raharās sarekhī | rājā raṅk barābarī bālak biradh na bhed nimekhī | chandan bhagatā rūp na rekhī |20|
Two Muslims meeting greet each other, 'Peace be upon you'; yogis meeting give their own greeting — homage to the First Being especially; the renouncer says 'Om, homage to Narayan', in many kinds of dress; to the Brahmin one bows, and he gives a blessing to the face he sees. But falling at the feet is the True Guru's way — and the Gursikhs' Way is the finest of all. King and beggar are equal there, child and elder — not a moment's difference. The devotees, like sandal, have no form and no mark.
21 · Examples of Humility

To be called the lowest of the low — rare is the one who lives the Guru's teaching. Take sixty small coins — one rupee outweighs them all, and they grow cheap; take ten rupees — one gold coin outweighs them and makes them light; price a thousand gold coins — and one diamond strung on a necklace outweighs them. Falling at the feet, becoming their dust, in thought, word and deed, doubt and fear are lost. Becoming the judge of the five senses, killing the five vices, he holds in what strays out. The word of the holy is the word that is never spoken — such are they.
