1 · Invocation — the Sixth Guru

Homage to the First Being, who had homage paid to the First Being. Making Onkar into form, He is called Guru-Govind by name. The Highest One, the perfect Brahm — without qualities and with them, He showed the unseen. In the holy company He is worshipped — the lover of His devotees, never fooled, outwits maya. Making Onkar into form, with one Word's expanse He spread it out. In every hair He kept it, holding millions of universes inside. The holy meditate on the Guru's feet.
2 · The Gurmukh Path

Setting foot on the Gurmukh path, he does not run the twelve roads in ten directions. Fixing his meditation on the Guru's image, he sees the perfect Brahm in every heart. Awareness in the Word, the teaching, love — the Highest One, the Guru's knowledge, is made known. Licking the plain, saltless stone, he drinks the water from those lotus feet. By the Guru's wisdom, steadying the mind, in the box of joy he settles in his own home. Leaving other people's bodies and wealth alone, touching the gold-making stone, he stays untouched. From unmastered to mastered, he comes to the holy company.
3 · The Way of the Gurmukhs
jiu vaṛ bīu sajīu hoi kar visathār birakh upajāiā | birakhahu hoi sahans phal phal phal vich bahu bīa samāiā | dutīā chand agās jiu ād purakh ādes karāiā | tāre maṇḍal sant jan dharam sāl sachakhaṇḍ vasāiā | pairī pai pākhāk hoi āp gavāi na āp jaṇāiā | guramukh sukh phal dhrū jivai nihachal vās agās chaṛhāiā | sabh tāre chaupher phirāiā |3|
As the banyan seed springs to life and raises a great tree, and out of the tree come a thousand fruits, and inside each fruit many seeds again — homage to the First Being. As the new moon of the second day rises in the sky — homage to the First Being. The stars in their courses are the saints, settling the house of worship, the land of truth; they fall at the feet and become their dust, losing themselves and making no show of themselves. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is like Dhru — an unshakable home fixed high in the sky, and all the stars turn around it.
4 · Bhagat Namdev
nāmā chhīmbā ākhīai guramukh bhāi bhagat liv lāī | khatrī brahamaṇ dehurai utam jāt karan vaḍiāī | nām pakaṛ uṭhāliā bah pichhavāṛai har guṇ gāī | bhagat vachhal ākhāidā pher dehurā paij rakhāī | daragah māṇ nimāṇiā sādhasaṅgat satigur saraṇāī | utam padavī nīch jāt chāre varaṇ pae pag āī | jiu nīvāṇ nīr chal jāī |4|
Namdev the cloth-printer, they say — the Gurmukh fixed his love on loving devotion. The warriors and Brahmins in the temple, of high caste, made their show of greatness. They seized Namdev and threw him out; sitting behind the temple, he sang the Lord's praise. Called the lover of His devotees, He turned the temple round and saved Namdev's honour. Honour goes to the lowly in the Court, in the holy company, the True Guru's shelter. The high state to the low caste — the four castes came and fell at his feet. As water runs down to the low place.
5 · The Devotees Have No Caste

The demon Vibhishan is a devotee; Bidar and Dhru — the fallen took shelter. Dhanna the Jat is told of; Sadhna, of the low caste of butchers. Bhagat Kabir the weaver, and Namdev the cloth-printer, sing the Lord's praise. Of the cobbler line is Ravidas; and Sain, among the low, was a barber. The crow raises the cuckoo's young, but in the end it goes and joins its own kind. Krishna was raised by Yashoda, but is called the lotus of Vasudev's line. Nobody weighs the pot the butter came in — the devotees have no caste, high or low. The lotus feet, the True Guru's shelter.
6 · Precious Things From Low Places

Out of the wasp's comb the sweet honey, as the bees gather and make the honeycomb. Out of the worm the silk and the fine robes; and beaten and beaten, the hemp becomes paper. Muslin comes out of cotton; in the mud grows the lotus, and the bee is drawn to it. As on the black snake's head sits the jewel, a stone laid over with diamonds and rubies. Know that musk comes from the deer's body; and iron is forged and named Bhagauti, the sword. Out of the cat is drawn the scent that perfumes the gathering. Out of low births the highest fruit is won.
7 · The Tale of King Bali

Bali, grandson of Prahlad, longed for the kingdom of Indra's city. Having finished his sacrifices, he did the hundred-and-first. Coming as the dwarf, He humbled Bali's pride and saved His devotee. Bali gave up Indra's throne and went to the world below, a man of the Command. Outwitting Bali, He let Himself be outwitted, and became the doorkeeper at Bali's gate. As the shell takes the raindrop and, diving, makes it a lovely pearl. Diamond piercing diamond, it merges.
8 · The Ant

To be called the lowest of the low — becoming the ant, it makes no show of itself. Walking the Gurmukh path, a thousand of them pass through one hole. Catching the scent of butter and sugar, it goes wherever it is set. When sugar is spilled in the sand, the ant picks out and eats the sweet, grain by grain. In fear of the bhringi wasp it dies, and becomes the bhringi — killed, it is made to live. The egg of the tortoise and of the crane — in hope it passes, wanting nothing, nourished from far off by remembrance. The Gurmukh, the Gursikh, wins the fruit of joy.
9 · The Small Become World-Renowned

Vyas went to the sun and, becoming a gnat, entered its ear. Learning its knowledge, he came home; and the Gurmukh Balmik pleased his mind. Vyas is told of from the first, reciting again and again the law-books, the Vedas and the old holy stories. Narad the sage taught him; reading the devotion of the Bhagvat, he was satisfied. Sifting the fourteen sciences and doing good — good conduct is what brings ease. The good-doing holy company — 'lifter of the fallen' is its nature, they say. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is honour, accepted.
10 · Sukdev

Twelve years living in the womb, and at birth Suk turned away from the world. Free of clinging in the middle of maya, by his stubborn mind and his cleverness he still found no release. His father Vyas taught him, making King Janak his Guru, a man practised in natural ease. Throwing off bad thinking, he took the Guru's wisdom; carrying the leftovers on his head, he won praise. Taking the Guru's warmth, throwing off pride, he became a servant of the world's Guru. Falling at the feet, becoming their dust, by the Guru's wisdom loving devotion was lit in him. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy lives in natural ease.
11 · The Distinction of the Gursikhs

The rule of the king who is also a yogi is Janak's; a great devotee, so the Veda tells. The Sanak sages and Narad, free of clinging, childlike and simple, lovely in their freedom. Crossing past a hundred thousand yogas and enjoyments, the Guru's Sikh, in the holy company, is at peace. Making a show of yourself is ruin; losing yourself, you know the Self. The Gurmukh path of Truth — kings and queens fall at the feet. Forgetting pride and conceit, by the Guru's wisdom, humility in the heart. In the true Court, honour goes to the lowly.
12 · The Water That Washed the Guru's Feet

The head, held high in pride, is full of blackness, with black hair; the brows full of blackness, and the eyelashes bristling black; the eyes themselves are called black; beard and moustache blacken the face; in the nose, nose-hairs in plenty, hair on hair, a dreadful blackness — and these high parts are not worshipped; but the dust of the feet is the Gurmukh's house of worship; the feet, the nails and the mouth are bright, and they carry the whole body's weight; washing the head is unclean — and the water from the Guru's feet is what the world seeks. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is ease and comfort.

In the water the earth, the house of worship; and in the earth the water lives. In the shelter of the lotus feet: unshakable patience, right living and sweet fragrance. Crops, trees, the array of flowers, herbs, roots and grass, that never die out. Pools, seas, Mount Sumeru, many jewels, goods, enjoyments and delights. Shrines of gods, pilgrimages in plenty, colours, forms and tastes revealed. Guru and disciple make the Way; the Gurmukh, the holy company, is the treasure of goodness. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy hopes for nothing in the middle of hope.
14 · The Worship of the Saints' Feet

In every hair He kept it, holding millions of universes inside. The Highest One, the perfect Brahm, the True Being, the True Guru, giver of joy. The four castes, becoming Gursikhs, in the holy company, the True Guru's shelter. Knowledge, meditation and remembrance always — the Gurmukh fixes his awareness in the Word. Love, devotion, awe and the sweetness of love — the True Guru's image lives in the heart. Such a great weight they carry — and worship at the saints' feet is dear to the Guru's Sikhs. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy cannot be priced.

The rain pours down in torrents, and runs through the channels into the streets; a hundred thousand brooks leap and run, and a hundred thousand streams flow their flow; a hundred thousand brooks in a hundred thousand currents merge into the rivers; nine hundred and ninety-nine rivers flow east and west; the rivers go into the sea, meeting where the ocean gathers; the seven seas going into the vast deep cannot fill its belly; and the deep, going under the world below, becomes one drop on a hot griddle. On the heads of the emperors, mountains of fuel are burnt to heat that griddle. Clashing and clashing, they die for a claim on the world.

Two swords in one sheath; two kings cannot fit in one land. Twenty holy beggars in a mosque hide under one patched quilt. In the forest, two lions; poppy-pods and poppy grain — opposites cannot share. Playing on the gallows, the poppy is crowned with a canopy, and then sold in the market. Crushed in the press, it is ground and strained into cups. In the carefree Court, pride is the sin, and honour goes to the lowly one. The Gurmukhs, having strength, are as those with none.

Seized by the lion, the dying goat laughs and laughs. The lion, astonished, asks: 'At a moment like this, what makes you laugh?' The goat pleads: 'Our young are gelded; feeding on bitter milkweed and thorn-apple, we are butchered, our hides stripped off, and we perish. What, then, will your own state be, who eat flesh by cutting throats?' Pride turns the body to dust; humility makes what could not be eaten into food, and what was useless into something useful. Everyone who comes into the world must die.

Making the lotus feet his Way, the Gurmukh is lit up in the holy company. Falling at the feet, becoming their dust, past all writing, undying, never perishing. Sipping the water from those feet, trouble, sickness and strife are set loose. By the Guru's wisdom he loses himself, staying free in the middle of maya. Awareness merged in the Word, he lives in the Formless One, the land of truth. The state of the Hidden One, of wisdom past sounding, the untold story, the wonder Gurdas speaks of. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy hopes for nothing in the middle of hope.

The hemp in the field is one crop — and it shows both good use and harm. Its skin is peeled and twisted into rope, and it becomes a binding that binds; spun as thread with cotton, it becomes fine muslin and delicate cloth; becoming a cover and a screen for the holy and the unholy alike — its nature stays its nature; in bad company it stays faultless, and in freeing company the holy man never rubs out his own good nature; becoming the mat of the house of worship, it is churned in the dust of the holy company's feet; beaten and beaten into paper, the Lord's praise is written on it and the old stories are read from it. It makes the fallen pure — dear to the servant.

Stone-hearted and hard is the limestone, burnt in the fire. Fire is put out by sprinkling water, but limestone only flares up more with water. Water poured on it does not take its bite away; the fire does not escape, bound to its own fault. Kept on the tongue it blisters — and meeting the wind it finds pain. But betel leaf, areca nut and catechu meeting — a lovely, full and perfect red. Meeting the holy in the holy company, one becomes holy; the Gurmukh tames what was wildly untamed. Losing himself, he merges in half an instant.
