The True Guru is the true Emperor, the Emperor of emperors, the Creator. His seat is the true throne — He lives in the holy company, the land of truth. True is His command and His mark, and true — His true order never turns back. The true Word is the true mint; from Guru to Guru the Word is met. True is the treasure of devotion, and true — the jewel of melody, kirtan, is pleasing. The Gurmukh's is the true path; a true proclamation, and He wields a true reign. Climbing past the twenties into the twenty-first.

Know the Guru as God — the True One gave Himself the true Name. The Formless became form, and is called the boundless One-Creator. Out of the One-Creator came the Word's sound; out of Onkar the form was made. Out of the One came the three gods; and the three together are reckoned as the ten comings-down. Homage to the First Being — He watches them, and they do not see Him. Shesh the serpent does his remembering, and never finds the end of His boundless names. The Gurmukh loves the true Name in his mind.

He parted the sky from the earth — working His power, He is called the Creator. He set the water inside the earth, and held the sky up without pillars. Putting fire inside the wood, day and night He raised the sun and the moon. Making six seasons and twelve months, the four ways of being born and the four kinds of speech, He staged the play. A human birth is rare; and the birth that finds the perfect Guru bears fruit. Meeting in the holy company, one melts into ease.

The True Guru is the true Giver — He gave us the priceless human birth. Making the mouth, the eyes, the nose and the ears, giving hands and feet, He set it walking. Teaching love and devotion, He made firm the Name, the giving and the clean living. Bathing in the still hour before dawn, the Gurmukh recites the Guru's sacred word. At night, the Arti and Sohila — and free in the middle of maya He keeps him. Sweet of speech, walking humbly, giving with his hands, making no show of himself. He set the four great gifts trailing behind him.

The True Guru is called great — great is the greatness of the Great. Making Onkar into form, a hundred thousand rivers cannot price Him. One universe is unbroken — He gives food to the creatures He made. In every hair He kept it, holding millions of universes inside. How great shall we call Him — what place, and of whom shall I go and ask? Nobody can reach Him; hearing and hearing, we tell only what we tell. The True Guru's image is made plain.

The root of meditation is the sight of the Guru — know it as the perfect Brahm. The root of worship is the True Guru's feet — serving the Guru is peace. The root of the sacred word is the True Guru's word — rare is the one who worships it with a single mind. The root of freedom is the merciful Guru — freedom while still alive is in the holy company. He is not found by making a show of yourself; rare is the one who, losing himself, meets Him. He who loses himself is the Self — He is everything, and everything is He. The Guru becomes the disciple, and the disciple the Guru.
7 · Right Living in the Four Ages

In the first age, for one man's sin, the whole land was made to suffer. In the second age a city was crushed; in the third, sin brought a whole dynasty to grief. In the dark age, whoever sows harvests — right living's justice runs easily. The deeds of the three earlier ages bore fruit later; in the dark age they bear fruit at once. Doing a wrong brings its stain; but merely thinking of a good deed bears its fruit. In loving devotion, keeping the Guru's anniversaries, they sow the seed in the true house of worship. The task is fulfilled, and the labour is complete.
8 · Right Living in the Dark Age

The first age had truth, the second its rite, the third much labour of worship. In the dark age, the Gurmukh who takes the Name crosses the terrible ocean of fear. In the first age right living had four feet; in the second the fourth foot lifted. In the third there were two feet; and in the dark age right living limps on one, in pain. Knowing that honour goes to the lowly, right living made its plea; and with a kind glance He blessed it. The perfect Guru brought the light — patience, right living, and the true house of worship. He Himself is the field, and He Himself its keeper.

Those who have love have no fear; the great fear ahead is made fearless. Fire is hot, water is cool — water flows low and keeps its head down. The full pitcher sinks, the empty one floats — and the full one makes no sound. The fruitful mango bows down under its load; the castor, whose fruit brings sorrow, does not bow low. The mind is a bird that flies about — by its nature it goes to eat wherever it likes. Set on the scale and weighed, the light and the heavy are told apart. Winning, one loses; losing, one wins — laying the head down on the feet. Falling at the feet, he lays the world at the feet.
10 · As the Love, So the Fruit

True is the Command, true what is written, true the cause — He staged the play. The cause lies in the Creator's power; for the rare one He does it and has it done. That one asks for nothing else — the Master's Will is what pleases him. So it pleases the Master — the lover of His devotees, called merciful by nature. In the holy company, awareness in the Guru's Word — the Creator, the cause, comes and acts. Childlike and simple, free in the world, the doubt of blessing and curse is driven off. As the love is, so is the fruit that is won.
11 · Returning Virtue for Fault

It gives back goodness for a fault — in natural ease, the way a tree does. The man with the axe sits in its shade, wishing ill to the good one. Giving its fruit though pelted with sticks, it ferries across the very one who cuts it down. The faithless win no fruit; the servants bear fruit past counting. Rare is the Gurmukh who is known — a servant who serves the servants. The world bows to the moon, and the ocean's waves swell in bliss. Whoever is Yours is the world's servant.
12 · The Sugarcane

Look at the wonderful sugarcane, born with its head hanging down: first its skin is stripped, then it is cut into pieces and broken and broken again; put in the press and ground, its juice goes to the vat and its husk to the fire; bearing sorrow and joy with patience, boiled down, it is blessed and blessed again by the world. Raw sugar, white sugar, sweets and rock-candy — the Gurmukh's fruit of joy binds every sweetness. Drinking the cup of love, dying and dying so as to live, he becomes sweet like the cane. The Gurmukh's words are priceless jewels.
13 · The Guru, a River

The Guru is a river past measure — a hundred thousand rivers merge into Him. In each and every river a hundred thousand shrines flow. In each and every current, by His power, a hundred thousand waves rise. The sea with its necklace of jewels, and the four great gifts — the fish swim in it. One wave cannot be reached; His power is endless, and no end is found. One drop of the cup of love — and rare is the Gurmukh who can carry what cannot be carried. He shows the unseen, and yet the unseen is never fully seen.
14 · God is Boundless

The Brahmas grew tired reading the Vedas; the Indras reign on Indra's throne. Mahadev became a hermit; Vishnu wanders through his ten comings-down. Masters, Nath yogis and lords of yogis, gods and goddesses, never find the secret. Ascetics, great ascetics, pilgrims, celibates and the truthful bear the body's pain. Shesh the serpent, with all the melodies, doing his remembering, sings His praise forever. Fortunate are the Gursikhs in the world, meeting the holy company through awareness of the Word. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy sees the unseen.
15 · The Virtue of Humility

The tree hangs its head down and bears a thousand fruits, fruitful. Water is called pure — head low, it flows to the low. The head is high and the feet are low — and the Gurmukh lays his head at the feet. Lowest of all is the earth — and it bears the grain, the wealth, the whole world's weight. Blessed is the earth, blessed that place, blessed where the Guru's Sikh, the holy one, sets his foot. Making the dust of the feet the highest thing, the saints and the Veda sing and hear its praise. Fortunate is the one who gains that dust.
16 · Guru Nanak, the Perfect Guru

Know the True Guru as perfect — the Perfect One made a perfect design. Perfect is the Perfect One's weight — it does not shrink or grow by any taking away or adding. Perfect is the Perfect One's wisdom — He takes nobody else's advice to settle a thing. Perfect is the Perfect One's sacred word; the perfect word does not turn, however you try to turn it. Every desire is fulfilled — meeting the holy company, the Perfect One is found. Crossing past the twenties into the twenty-first, climbing the ladder of honour, he comes to his own home. Perfect, he merges into the Perfect.

Masters and seekers meet and keep their night vigil, gathering their crowd on Shiva's night. Mahadev the hermit, and lotus-throned Brahma, sit in their pleasures. Gorakh the yogi keeps vigil; and Guru Machhendra kept his consort. But the True Guru wakes, and wakes others — meeting the holy company in the still hour before dawn. He fixes his stillness in his own home — the unplayed Word, the play of love's sweetness. Homage to the First Being — the unseen Stainless One, a love with no season. Out of disciple the Guru, out of Guru the disciple.

Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, the three — worldly, stewards and kings. The four castes, householders, are beholden to caste, family line and maya. The six schools and the six law-books do their pretend deeds for show. Those who renounce take ten names, and the yogis are graced with twelve sects. In ten directions, on twelve roads, they beg for food good and bad at other people's doors. But the four castes, becoming Gursikhs, meet — and the melody no one plays sounds in the holy company. The Gurmukh, caste and outcaste alike, makes the sight, the Name and the path a home of peace. The true is true, and the false is only decked out in falsehood.

The True Guru is the treasure of goodness — with goodness He forgives the faulty. The True Guru is the perfect doctor — He cures all five incurable diseases. The Guru is the ocean of peace — giving peace, He gathers up the sorrowful. The perfect Guru has no enemies — He ferries across the gossip, the spiteful and the faithless. The perfect Guru is always fearless — He lifts off the fear of birth, of death, and of Death himself. The True Guru-Being knows everything — He delivers even the deeply ignorant and dull. Know the True Guru as the guide — He takes the arm and saves the blind. Honour goes to the lowly — and to Him I give myself forever.

Touching the True Guru, that gold-making stone, He turns filthy waste into gold. The True Guru is the sandalwood — with its fragrance He makes things priceless. The True Guru is the perfect wish-granting tree — He makes the fruitless silk-cotton tree bear fruit, joined to Himself. The True Guru is Lake Mansarovar — out of a crow He makes a swan, drinking the milk out of the water. The Guru's shrine is the river — He makes even the beast and the ghost skilful. The True Guru sets the bound free — He makes those free of clinging free while still alive. The Gurmukh's unbelieving mind is convinced.

Masters, Nath yogis and comings-down of God all held their debate and had to give it up. Babur's own people met him — bowing and bowing, all the nobles were made to bow. Kings met him and parted; leaving yoga and enjoyment behind, he staged his play. The Emperor of faith and of the world, needing nothing, came home to His own reign. Being the Creator, He works His power — and this play too He made out of His power. Some He parts from their union, and those long parted He brings together. In the holy company He showed the unseen.

The True Guru is the perfect Banker — the three worlds are His traders. Jewels and goods past counting, a hundred thousand storehouses filled with loving devotion. A hundred thousand wish-granting trees in the garden, and thousands of herds of wish-granting cows. A hundred thousand goddesses of wealth are His servants, and a boundless mountain of gold-making stones. Taking a hundred thousand nectars, a hundred thousand Indras could sprinkle His Court. A hundred thousand suns and moons are His lamps; wealth-powers, miracle powers and treasure in heaps and piles. All of it He shared out and gave away — loving devotion, loving the True One. The lover of His devotees is the True Guru, the Formless.

Churning the ocean of milk, they drew out the fourteen jewels and shared them: the moon-gem, the goddess of wealth, the wish-granting tree, the conch and the great bow, Vishnu took for himself; the wish-granting cow and the heavenly dancer, the great white elephant and Indra's throne were set out; out of the poison came the half-moon, which Mahadev wore on his brow — and he drank down the poison itself; the horse went to the sun; and gods and demons shared out the wine and the nectar. The great healer made his healing medicine — and yet, bitten by the serpent king, even his own mind was undone. But priceless is the Guru's teaching — a treasure of jewels past all counting; and the True Guru's Sikhs love the Truth.

He sits and holds a house of worship; he does not stay fixed in any one place. Kings come to his house; and when the emperor marched up to the fort, he rose above it. The people cannot find his palace; he goes about unafraid, frightened by nobody. Content, he sits on his cot; he keeps dogs and enjoys the hunt. He composes his own hymns and has them sung; he does not merely recite, nor merely listen, nor sing to be heard. He does not keep servants at his side; he keeps the spiteful and the wicked right at his mouth. Truth is not hidden by hiding — the Sikhs are bees drawn to the lotus feet. He carries what cannot be carried, making no show of himself.

A field is fenced with a thorn hedge, as a garden is with acacia all around. The sandal is wrapped about by snakes; a lock is on the door, and a dog keeps watch. The lotus is known by its thorns; and one wise soul is rare in the crowd. Like the gold-making stone among the stones, like the jewel on the black snake's head; a jewel shines in a string of glass beads; and the great elephant is held by a slender rope. Loving devotion drives hunger away — Bidar fed Him sweet balls of humble greens. The Guru's Sikhs are bees at the lotus feet; the holy company is a blessed meeting. The cup of love is a hard sea to cross.

In the ocean of fear there is a great lake, deep and grave, of seven seas. No landing place and no boatman; no shore, no end and no width. No boat and no raft; no oar to steady the hand. Nobody else can reach it — only the swans pick out the pearls and diamonds. The True Guru works His play — settling a village, then moving on again. Like the moon on the night of no moon, the unseen stays unseen, and the fish stays in the water. The disciples die at the resting-place of the Guru, their master.

As the fish's family, living or dying, never forgets the water; as the moth's family knows no wisdom but the lamp; as the lotus loves the water, and the bee's love for the lotus is told; the one raindrop for the rain-bird, the sound for the deer, the mango fruit for the cuckoo; the swan of the great lake, that mine of priceless jewels; the sheldrake's love for the sun, and the partridge's wonderful play with the moon — so the line of the Guru's Sikhs are highest swans, knowing the True Guru as the pool of ease. The wild duck is a mark among marks.

The tortoise fixes its meditation on its egg from far off, out of the water; the crane does its remembering, and the young one, made whole, flies; the hen raises the chick, and the duckling goes off and joins the water; the crow raises the cuckoo, but blood joins blood in the end; the sheldrake and partridge lines — Shiva and his power meet and mate; the sun and the moon are known that way, seen through six seasons and twelve months. The Gurmukh's meeting is with Truth; the lotus of the poets, the bee, blossoms. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy sees the unseen.

Being of the gold-making stone's line, it joins and mixes all the metals. The sandal's fragrance is its nature — it lays its scent on the fruitless and the fruitful alike. Out of a hundred thousand waves the Ganga is made — and the streams and brooks become the Ganga. The one suckled on a claim of loyalty, the foster-brother, is dear to the king. Eating the king's salt, the foster-brother becomes his servant and stands by him. Of the True Guru's line is the highest swan — and the Guru's Sikh keeps up the swan line. He walks the road of father and grandfather.

As a hundred thousand stars twinkle, and yet not one shines close in the dark of night; and as, when clouds cover the sun, the night can never match the returning day — so where the Guru works his play, no sense of 'two' is left in the Sikhs' minds. Through all six seasons there is only one sun; and the owl, though it looks, cannot see it. The moon-lotus and the sun-lotus both open, and the bee visits them all; passing beyond Shiva and his power, the Sikhs go at dawn to meet the holy company. Falling at the feet — the good of the good.

One man becomes a worldly emperor, dies, and the kingdom passes to his son. He issues his own proclamation; the servants and soldiers are all under his command. He has the sermon read in his name; the judges and preachers bear witness. In the mint his coin is struck; and by his command white becomes black. He takes the wealth and the land as his own, mounting the throne and the good fortune, carefree. But in Baba's house the way is different — the Gurmukh keeps to the highway. One is a proclamation, a mint and a sermon; the other is the true throne of the Court. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is a gift from God.

If anyone, making a show of himself, rebels against the emperors, he is slaughtered, a wretch — no shroud, no coffin, no grave. Casting his coin outside the mint, the forger wastes his birth. Writing a hypocrite's decree, he suffers loss and weeps in tears. Setting up a jackal's lordship, nothing is made to last by a foul word. Face blackened, he is set on a donkey; and even a learned chief, once stained, must wash it off. Loving anything but God, he stands in the wrong place.
33 · The Pride of the Claimants

Sri Chand is a child-celibate — he built a temple in the Guru's line. Dharam Chand, grandson of Lakhmi Das, set himself up in pride. Datu, sitting on the cot, came to the Guru's seat and learned rivalry. Mohan grew distracted, and Mohri was honoured in the upper room. Prithia turned deceiver, weaving crookedness and madness by his scheming. Mahadev, in pride, turned faithless — a barking dog. The sandal's fragrance never perfumed them.
34 · The Line of Guruship

Baba's line went on — Guru and disciple made their love. Guru Angad out of the Guru's own body — Guru pleasing disciple, disciple Guru. Amardas out of Guru Angad — out of the True Guru, called True Guru. Out of Guru Amar, Guru Ramdas — by serving the Guru, he merged and became Guru. Out of Ramdas, Guru Arjan — the nectar-tree bore its nectar-fruit. Hargobind out of Guru Arjan — homage to the First Being paid. The dawn shines, and is not hidden by hiding.

With one Word's expanse, Onkar made the spread of everything. His power cannot be weighed — it cannot be weighed, and there is nobody to weigh it. On every head is the writing of the One who was never written down — the gift, the light, the glory, the deed. That unwritten writing cannot be read — no ink, no pen, no writer. Melody, tune, the unplayed strain — and there is no singer of Onkar. The four ways of being born, the four kinds of speech, creatures, names and places past all counting and measuring. One Word is past measure — how great the Maker is! The holy company is the True Guru, the Formless.
