Chapter 27

Var 27 · The Love of Master and Disciple

The famous vaar that opens with the great lovers — Laila-Majnun, Sassi-Punnu, Sohni-Mahiwal, Ranjha-Heer — as images of the disciple's love for the Guru, each stanza closing on the refrain: dear is the love of master and disciple.

1 · The First Lovers

lelai majanūn āsakī chahu chakī jātī | soraṭh bījā gāvīai jas sughaṛā vātī | sasī punnūn dosatī hui jāt ajātī | mehīvāl no sohaṇī nai taradī rātī | rāñjhā hīr vakhāṇīai ohu piram parātī | pīr murīdā pirahaṛī gāvan parabhātī |1|

Laila and Majnun's love is known in all four directions. Sorath and Beeja are sung — the fair one's praise on every tongue. Sassi and Punnu's friendship crossed caste and no-caste. Sohni swam the river by night to Mahiwal. Ranjha and Heer are told of — theirs was a love soaked right through. And yet dearer is the love of master and disciple — they sing of it at dawn.

2 · The Love of Disciples

amalī amal na chhaḍanī hui bahan ikaṭhe | jiu jūe jūārīā lag dāv upaṭhe | chorī chor na palarah dukh sahan garaṭhe | rahan na gaṇikā vāṛiahu vekaramī laṭhe | pāpī pāp kamāvade hoi phirade naṭhe | pīr murīdā pirahaṛī sabh pāp paṇaṭhe |2|

The addict never leaves his drug, and they sit together; gamblers cling to the game, staking on the losing throw; the thief does not give up his stealing, though he bears the pain in his neck; they never leave the lane of the prostitutes, sunk in their wrongdoing; sinners do their sinning, and go about on the run. But dear is the love of master and disciple — by it every sin is wiped away.

3 · The Same

bhavarai vās viṇās hai phiradā phulavāṛī | jalai pataṅg nisaṅg hoi kar akh ughāṛī | mirag nād bisamād hoi phiradā ojāṛī | kuṇḍī phāthe machh jiu ras jībh vigāṛī | hāthaṇ hāthī phāhiā dukh sahai dihāṛī | pīr murīdā pirahaṛī lāi nij ghar tāṛī |3|

The bee, ruined by fragrance, wanders the flower garden; the moth burns without fear, its eyes wide open; the deer, spellbound by the sound, wanders the wilderness; the fish, caught on the hook, ruins its tongue for a taste; the elephant is trapped by the decoy, and suffers day after day. But dear is the love of master and disciple — they fix their stillness in their own home.

4 · The Guru-Sikh Love

chand chakor parīt hai lāi tār nihāle | chakavī sūraj het hai mil hon sukhāle | nehu kaval jal jāṇīai khiṛ muh vekhāle | mor babīhe bolade vekh badal kāle | nār bhatār piār hai mān put samhāle | pīr murīdā pirahaṛī ohu nibahai nāle |4|

The moon and the partridge are in love — fixing its gaze, it watches; the sheldrake loves the sun, and meets it at ease; the lotus's love for water is known — it opens and shows its face; the peacock and the rain-bird cry out, seeing the dark clouds; a wife loves her husband, and a mother tends her son. But dear is the love of master and disciple — that alone stands by you to the end.

5 · The Love of Master and Disciple

rūpai kāmai dosatī jag andar jāṇī | bhukhai sādai gaṇḍh hai ohu viratī hāṇī | ghul mil michal lab māl it bharam bhulāṇī | ūghai sauṛ palaṅgh jiu sabh raiṇ vihāṇī | suhaṇe sabh raṅg māṇīan kar choj viḍāṇī | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī ohu akath kahāṇī |5|

Beauty and lust are friends, as the world knows; hunger and taste are bound together, of the same trade; blended and mixed in greed and wealth, people are fooled by that doubt; as the drowsy find a narrow cot a bed, and the whole night passes; in a dream all colours are enjoyed, and wonderful plays made. But dear is the love of master and disciple — that untold story.

6 · The Same

mān sarovar hansalā khāi māṇak motī | koil amb parīt hai mil bol sarotī | chandan vās vaṇāsupat hoi pās khalotī | lohā pāras bheṭiai hoi kañchan jotī | nadīā nāle gaṅg mil hon chhot achhotī | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī ih khep saotī |6|

The swan of Lake Mansarovar eats rubies and pearls; the cuckoo's love for the mango, singing to those who listen; the sandal's fragrance, and the plants standing beside it; iron touching the gold-making stone becomes the light of gold; the streams and brooks meeting the Ganga become pure out of impure. Dear is the love of master and disciple — this is a trade that profits.

7 · The True Kinship

sāhur pīhar pakh trai ghar nānehālā | sahurā sas vakhāṇīai sālī tai sālā | mā piu bhaiṇān bhāirā paravār durālā | nānā nānī māsīān māme jañjālā | suinā rupā sañjīai hīrā paravālā | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī ehu sāk sukhālā |7|

In-laws' house, parents' house and mother's people — three sides; father-in-law and mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law; mother, father, sisters, brothers, the wide family; grandfather, grandmother, aunts and uncles — a whole tangle; gold and silver piled up, diamonds and coral. But dear is the love of master and disciple — that is the kinship of ease.

8 · The True Work

vaṇaj karai vāpārīā tit lāhā toṭā | kirasāṇī kirasāṇ kar hoi dubalā moṭā | chākar lagai chākarī raṇ khāndā choṭān | rāj jog sansār vich vaṇ khaṇḍ gaṛ koṭā | ant kāl jamajāl pai pāe phal phoṭā | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī hui kade nā toṭā |8|

The trader does his trade — and there is profit and loss in it; the farmer does his farming — and grows lean, then fat; the servant serves — and takes blows in the battle; kingdom and yoga in the world — forests, forts and castles; and at the last hour Death's noose falls, and he harvests a broken fruit. But dear is the love of master and disciple — there is never any loss in it.

9 · The True Enjoyment

akhī vekh na rajīā bahu raṅg tamāse | usatat nindā kann suṇ rovaṇ tai hāse | sādīn jībh na rajīā kar bhog bilāse | nak na rajā vās lai duragandh suvāse | raj na koī jīviā kūṛe bharavāse | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī sachī raharāse |9|

The eyes are never satisfied, seeing many colours and shows; the ears, hearing praise and slander, weep and laugh; the tongue is never satisfied with tastes, however it enjoys them; the nose is never satisfied taking scents, foul and sweet; nobody has ever lived satisfied, in all these false hopes. But dear is the love of master and disciple — the true Way.

10 · The Fruitfulness of the Limbs

dhrig sir jo gur nā nivai gur lagai na charaṇī | dhrig loiṇ gur daras viṇ vekhai par taraṇī | dhrig saravaṇ upades viṇ suṇ surat na dharaṇī | dhrig jihabā gur sabad viṇ hor mantr simaraṇī | viṇ sevā dhrig hath pair hor nihaphal karaṇī | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī sukh satigur saraṇī |10|

Cursed is the head that does not bow to the Guru, and does not fall at the Guru's feet. Cursed the eyes that, without the Guru's sight, gaze at another man's wife. Cursed the ears that, without the teaching, hear and take nothing in. Cursed the tongue that, without the Guru's Word, chants some other charm. Without service, cursed are the hands and feet — every other deed bears no fruit. Dear is the love of master and disciple — peace is in the True Guru's shelter.

11 · The True Attachment

horat raṅg na rachīai sabh kūṛ disandā | horat sād na lagīai hoi visul gandā | horat rāg na rījhīai suṇ sukh na lahandā | hor burī karatūt hai lagai phal mandā | horat panth na chalīai ṭhag chor muhandā | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī sach sach milandā |11|

Take no other colour of dye — everything else looks false; taste no other flavour — it turns to poison and filth; delight in no other melody — hearing it, no peace comes; every other deed is evil — it bears bad fruit; walk no other path — the thief and the cheat rob you there. Dear is the love of master and disciple — the true meets the True.

12 · The Same

dūjī ās viṇās hai pūrī kiu hovai | dūjā moh su dhroh sabh ohu ant vigovai | dūjā karam subharam hai kar avaguṇ rovai | dūjā saṅg kuḍhaṅg hai kiu bhariā dhovai | dūjā bhāu kudāu hai hār janam khalovai | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī guṇ guṇī parovai |12|

A second hope is ruin — how can it ever be fulfilled? A second clinging is all deceit — in the end it brings disgrace. A second deed is doubt — doing faults, a person weeps. A second company is the bad road — how shall the soiled be washed there? Loving anything else is a losing throw — the birth is lost and stands beaten. Dear is the love of master and disciple — goodness is strung upon goodness.

13 · The Form of the Guru's Love

amio disaṭ kar kachh vāṅg bhavajal vich rakhai | giān ans de hans vāṅg bujh bhakh abhakhai | simaraṇ karade kūñj vāṅg uḍ lakhai alakhai | mātā bālak het kar ohu sāu na chakhai | satigur purakh daiāl hai gurasikh parakhai | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī lakh mulīan kakhai |13|

With the nectar-glance, like the tortoise, He keeps them in the ocean of fear; giving them a share of knowledge, like the swan, He teaches what to eat and what to leave; doing His remembering, like the crane, He flies and sees the unseen; like a mother's love for her child, He tastes no sweetness for Himself; the True Guru-Being is merciful, testing His Gursikhs. Dear is the love of master and disciple — a single straw of it is worth a hundred thousand.

14 · The Form of Love With the Guru

darasan dekh pataṅg jiu jotī jot samāvai | sabad surat liv mirag jiu anahad liv lāvai | sādhasaṅgat vich mīn hoi guramat sukh pāvai | charaṇ kaval chit bhavar hoi sukh raiṇ vihāvai | gur upades na visarai bābīhā dhiāvai | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī dubidhā nā sukhāvai |14|

Seeing that face, like the moth, light merges into Light; awareness in the Word, like the deer, he fixes his love on the unplayed strain; becoming a fish in the holy company, by the Guru's wisdom he finds peace; a bee at the lotus feet in his mind, his night passes in joy; the Guru's teaching is not forgotten — like the rain-bird, he meditates. Dear is the love of master and disciple — seeing two gives him no ease.

15 · The Guru's Love is Highest of All

dātā ohu na maṅgīai phir maṅgaṇ jāīai | hochhā sāhu na kīchaī phir pachhotāīai | sāhib ohu na sevīai jam ḍaṇḍ sahāīai | haumai rog na kaṭaī ohu vaid na lāīai | duramat mail na utarai kiun tīrath nāīai | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī sukh sahaj samāīai | |15|

Do not beg from a giver who then has to go begging himself; do not make a shallow man your banker, and repent it afterwards; do not serve that master, and then suffer Death's rod; do not go to the doctor who cannot cut out the disease of pride; how will bathing at holy places take away the dirt of bad thinking? Dear is the love of master and disciple — in it one melts into calm ease.

16 · The Same

māl mulak chaturaṅg dal dunīā patisāhī | ridh sidh nidh bahu karāmāt sabh khalak umāhī | chir jīvaṇ bahu haṇḍhaṇān guṇ giān ugāhī | horas kisai na jāṇaī chit beparavāhī | daragah ḍhoī nā lahai dubidhā badarāhī | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī paravāṇ su ghāhī |16|

Wealth and land, the four-fold army, an empire over the world; wealth-powers, miracle powers, treasure and many marvels, and the whole world eager for them; a long life and much endurance, goodness and knowledge as witness — and yet, knowing nothing else, in a carefree mind, he finds no shelter in the Court, on the false road of seeing two. Dear is the love of master and disciple — by it even the grass-cutter is accepted.

17 · The Form of Love With the Guru

viṇ gur hor dhiān hai sabh dūjā bhāu | viṇ gur sabad giān hai phikā ālāu | viṇ gur charaṇā pūjaṇā sabh kūṛā suāu | viṇ gur bachan ju mannaṇā ūrā parathāu | sādhasaṅgat viṇ saṅg hai sabh kachā chāu | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī jiṇ jāṇan dāu |17|

Without the Guru, all other meditation is loving something else; without the Guru's Word, knowledge is a flat, tasteless saying; without the Guru's feet, all worship aims falsely; to obey a word that is not the Guru's is to stand on false ground; without the holy company, all company is raw enthusiasm. Dear is the love of master and disciple — they know how to win the throw.

18 · The Guru's Love Breaks Ego

lakh siāṇap surat lakh lakh guṇ chaturāī | lakh mat budh sudh giān dhiān lakhapat vaḍiāī | lakh jap tap lakh sañjamā lakh tīrath nhāī | karam dharam lakh jog bhog lakh pāṭh paṛhāī | āp gaṇāi viguchaṇā ohu thāi na pāī | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī hoi āp gavāī |18|

A hundred thousand clevernesses, a hundred thousand awarenesses, a hundred thousand virtues and skills; a hundred thousand kinds of understanding, mind, knowledge and meditation, and a rich man's greatness; a hundred thousand chants and hard disciplines, a hundred thousand penances, bathing at a hundred thousand holy places; deeds and duties, a hundred thousand yogas and enjoyments, a hundred thousand readings and recitings — and making a show of yourself is ruin; that person finds no place. Dear is the love of master and disciple — it is found by losing yourself.

19 · The Disciple's Service

pairī pai pākhāk hoi chhaḍ maṇī manūrī | pāṇī pakhā pīhaṇā nit karai majūrī | trapaṛ jhāṛ vichhāindā chul jhok na jhūrī | murade vāṅg murīd hoi kar sidak sabūrī | chandan hovai simmalahu phal vās hajūrī | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī guramukh mat pūrī |19|

Falling at the feet, becoming their dust, leaving jewels and rust alike; fetching water, waving the fan, grinding grain, working all the time; shaking out the mat and spreading it, stoking the fire without grumbling; becoming a disciple like a corpse in surrender, with faith and contentment; out of the silk-cotton tree he becomes sandalwood, fruit and fragrance in His presence. Dear is the love of master and disciple — the Gurmukh's wisdom is perfect.

20 · The Fruit of Serving the Guru

gur sevā dā phal ghaṇā kin kīmat hoī | raṅg suraṅg acharaj hai vekhālai soī | sād vaḍā visamād hai ras guṅge goī | utabhuj vās nivās hai kar chalat samoī | tol atol amol hai jarai ajar koī | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī jāṇai jāṇoī |20|

Great is the fruit of serving the Guru — who can put a price on it? A wonderful, brilliant colour it is — and He alone shows it. A great, wonderful taste — a sweetness no mute could ever tell; it lives like the fragrance in a springing plant, made into a play; past weighing, past pricing — and rare is the one who carries what cannot be carried. Dear is the love of master and disciple — the Knower knows it.

21 · How the Disciple Becomes One

channaṇ hovai channaṇahu ko chalit na jāṇai | dīvā baladā dīviahun samasar paravāṇai | pāṇī raladā pāṇīai tis ko na siñāṇai | bhriṅgī hovai kīṛiahu kiv ākh vakhāṇai | sap chhuḍandā kuñj no kar choj viḍāṇai | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī hairāṇ hairāṇai |21|

Sandalwood becomes sandalwood — nobody knows how the play is done; the lamp lit from the lamp is accepted as the same; water merging into water — nobody can tell one from the other; the worm that becomes the bhringi wasp — how can that be told? The snake lets go of the crane it seized — a wonderful play. Dear is the love of master and disciple — a wonder of wonders.

22 · The Way of Self-Attainment

phulī vās nivās hai kit jugat samāṇī | phalā andar jiu sād bahu siñje ik pāṇī | ghiu dudh vich vakhāṇīai ko maram na jāṇī | jiu baisantar kāṭh vich ohu alakh viḍāṇī | guramukh sañjam nikalai paragaṭ paravāṇī | pīr murīdān pirahaṛī saṅgat gurabāṇī |22|

The fragrance lives in the flower — by what device is it kept there? Like the taste inside the fruit, watered by the same one water; like the butter spoken of in the milk — nobody knows that secret; like fire inside the wood — that unseen wonder; by the Gurmukh's discipline it comes out, made plain and accepted. Dear is the love of master and disciple — the holy company and Gurbani.

23 · Give the Head, but Flinch Not

The lamp burns, and the line of moths, seeing it, does not turn back; the fish, pulled out of the water, does not love it any less; the deer, hearing the hunter's sound, turns toward it; the bee, ruined by fragrance, is crushed clutching the lotus; the Gurmukh's fruit of joy, the sweetness of love, cuts many bonds. Blessed, blessed is the line of the Guru's Sikhs; blessed, they earn the treasure of the Guru's wisdom.
