1 · The Fate of Virtue and Fault

Out of the sea come both deadly poison and nectar-speech. Eat the one and you die; eat the other and the mortal becomes immortal. Poison lives in the snake's mouth; but in the eagle's beak, know it as nectar-sweetness. The crow's cawing pleases nobody; the cuckoo's song pleases everyone. The rough-spoken are not liked; the sweet-spoken are a wonderful friend to the world. Good and evil are in the world — doing good and doing wrong are the marks. That is how the fate of goodness and of fault is told.
2 · The Seeker and the Wrangler

Those who can see, see through the three worlds; the blind owl sees nothing. The sheldrake loves the sun — meeting her mate, she knows the news. The night is dark to the birds; but the sheldrake's mind is not caught in the dark. Seeing his reflection in the water, the wise man knows it for himself. But the lion, seeing his reflection, leaps into the well and drowns, tricked by his own eyes. The seeker seeks and finds the trail; the arguer, arguing, gets lost. Milk is drawn from cows, not from elephants — each gives by its own nature.
3 · The Heron's Trance

In the rainy month the woods turn green; in that same rain the bitter milkweed and the camel-thorn wither. In the spring month the plants blossom; the leafless karir bush takes no heart from it. All the fruitful trees bear fruit; the silk-cotton stays fruitless, and nobody trusts it. The sandal lays its fragrance among the plants; but the bamboo, living right beside it, takes no scent and stands tall. The conch, though it came out of the sea, is empty — the poor thing cries and wails. The heron's trance is in the Ganga — it picks out and eats the little creatures. Parted from the true company, it meets the noose.

The one who is good himself sees the whole world as good — everyone looks good to him; the one who is evil himself sees the whole world as evil — he counts everybody evil. Krishna was the helper of the Pandavas — for their love, their devotion and their special deeds. The Kauravas held enmity in their hearts, and their reckoning was black. The good and the evil are marked out; go looking for a fault in the good, and it is not there. Yudhishthir found nobody evil; Duryodhana saw nobody good. As the water-pot is, so its spout runs.
5 · The Tale of Dharamraj

Born in the house of the Sun, he sits to judge right living. One form, two names — the Judge of the dead and Death himself — and all creation looks on. To the upright he is the Judge; to the sinner who does his sinning, he appears as Death. To the sinner he speaks harshly; to the upright he speaks sweetly. Enemies he looks at with enmity; friends he looks at with love, as dear ones. Hell and heaven, sin and merit, blessing and curse — those who did not fulfil their lives come to know them. As the reflection in a mirror, so is what appears.
6 · The Clear Mirror

As in a clean mirror everything is pure, and everyone sees himself; the fair one looks fair, and the dark one dark in his own shade; the laughing face sees a laughing face, and the weeping one, clearly marked, sees weeping.
7 · The Watchmen

Waking, the rare watchmen cry the alarm to those who are awake, and drive off the thieves; waking, they wake the sleepers, and the bankers catch the thieves and robbers. Those who are awake keep the house; those asleep are robbed, poor souls. The bankers come home safe; the thief and adulterer are seized by the neck and killed. Good and evil work away in the world.
8 · The Disposition of Company

Mangoes blossom in the spring; the withered milkweed fills with its own flowers. No pod grows on the mango, and no mango on the milkweed — each is swollen with its own. The black cuckoo in the mango grove; the milkweed locust, mottled-hearted, green in the milkweed. The mind is a bird, and the tree tells you which is which — by the company's nature it bears that fruit. By the Guru's wisdom he fears evil in the holy company; in bad thinking, in bad company, he has no fear. He is called the lover of His devotees, lifter of the fallen — and the fallen are lifted. Whoever pleases Him is ferried across.
9 · Do Not Imitate the Saved Sinner

If Putana was saved, poisoning is still no good deed. Ganika the prostitute was saved, they say — but do not go into another's house and court trouble. Balmik was delivered — and yet do not be fearless in waylaying and killing on the road. The fowler was saved, they say — and yet set no snare to trap a bird by the leg. If the butcher was saved, still do not kill creatures and eat their flesh. The ship carries gold and iron across alike — but to live on that trust is the crooked way.
10 · Imitating Sin is Bad

A man may live after falling from a date palm — but do not climb it in order to fall. A man is not always killed when he falls in the wilds — and still the wilderness road is no good way. A man may survive a snake-bite — and still, do not grasp the snake, ruined at the end. A man may come out alive swimming a torrent — but a good man drowns crossing without a raft. He is called the lifter of the fallen — know the Knower who knows every state. Love and devotion are the Guru's wisdom; in bad thinking he finds no shelter in the Court. At the last, a person's own deeds are his companion.
11 · Gurmukh and Manmukh Differ by Virtue

As garlic and musk in scent, so gold and iron are not of one colour. Crystal is not the equal of the diamond; the reed does not rank with the sugarcane. A false weight is not the equal of a jewel; glass is not sold at the price of emerald. Bad thinking is a whirlpool; the Guru's wisdom is the ship of good deeds, well bolted. The evil one is slandered; on the good, hail upon hail, 'blessed, blessed'. The Gurmukh is known and made plain; in the manmukh, truth stays hidden. A broken vessel is of no use at all.
12 · The Difference Made by Deeds

Some forge and sell weapons, and some make the armour and the mail. In the field, wounding and warding, the two armies make their daily offering of battle. The wounded one lies bare and beaten; the armoured one is whole and fresh. The bow-makers and the armourers make their boast, and dress themselves up in it. In the world there is the company of the holy and the company of the unholy — and by the company's nature a person goes and eats the fruit. Deeds are right or wrong — and a person is strung on joy or on sorrow. Good and evil earn praise and bad name.

Truth, contentment, pity, right living and able purpose come in the holy company. Lust and anger, in bad company, kindle greed, clinging and pride. By bad deeds or good deeds a person earns the name 'evil' or 'good'. The cow eats grass and gives milk, and calving and calving swells the herd. The snake, given milk to drink, gives poison, and breeding and breeding eats its own young. By the company's nature, holy or unholy, one harvests the fruit of sin or of merit, sorrow or joy. One earns by doing good, another by doing wrong.

The sandal tree gives out its fragrance, and turns all the trees to sandal. Rubbing against the bamboo, the fire kindles — it burns itself and burns its own family. As the fowler traps the birds, so he traps himself and his kin. Out of the mountain's eight-metal ore, the gold-making stone makes gold and shows it. Going into the prostitutes' lane and sinning, they come away diseased. The sick come to the doctor's house — and giving medicine, he cures the disease. Good and evil are both a matter of the company's nature.
15 · Good and Evil

The madder's nature is good — it bears the boiling and takes on its colour. The sugarcane is crushed in the press, and falling into the vat, swells its sweetness. The bitter gourd, watered with nectar, never gives up its bitter nature. He gives back goodness for a fault, that good one — he holds no fault in his heart. He gives back a fault for goodness, that bad one — he takes no goodness into his mind. Whatever a person sows, that fruit he eats.
16 · Their Natural Good and Evil

Like a line drawn on water and a line cut in stone, good and evil are made by nature. Enmity does not hold in the good man's heart; and love does not hold in the bad man's mind. The good man does not forget his love; the bad man does not put enmity out of his mind. The hopes of the two are never fulfilled — bad thinking and the Guru's wisdom show themselves at the last. Out of the good comes no evil; out of the evil, no good, however he is coaxed. This has been told as the way things are — and the wise one tells it as a lesson to the Sikh. One earns by doing good, another by doing wrong.

The way things are has been told — now hear the tale of the good man and the evil one. Good and evil set out together on a road; one had food, and one had water. The good man set his food out to share — goodness he brought inside himself. The evil man went on doing evil — he would not even draw water with his hands for the other. The good man succeeded by his goodness; the evil man's night passed in wailing over his evil. The True Master's justice is true — the Knower knows every creature's state. To the Creator's power I give myself.

Good and evil are in the world — and whoever comes must surely die. Like Ravan and Ramchandra, great warriors, they fought, and made a cause of it. Conquering age and the strong, at the last Ravan set wrong living in his mind. Ramchandra, the pure Being, by right living floated stones on the sea. By his evil Ravan went, with a black mark on him, carrying off another man's wife. The Ramayan lasts, age upon age — and those who came to the shelter were saved. In praise and in bad name, be fearless in fear.

Golden Lanka, a great fort, with a moat like the salt sea; a hundred thousand sons and more grandsons still, Kumbhkaran and Mahiravan his brothers; the wind sweeps his floors daily, and Indra fills his water in the rains; fire is his cook, and sun and moon his lamps; many armies of the four-fold host, and his land and his dress past price; serving Mahadev, gods and demons stayed in his shelter — and yet he took a bad name through bad thinking and evil.

Ramchandra, the cause behind causes, took a body for a cause of his own. Obeying his stepmother, he went to the forest and earned greatness. He broke Parasram's strength — merciful to the meek, destroyer of pride. Served by Sita and Lakshman, lovers of a chaste and true service. He spread the Ramayan, ruled as Ram's reign, and saved creation. A man's death with honour is a true death — meeting the holy company, his honour was adorned. Goodness is the very essence of the True Guru's wisdom.
