Chapter 32

Var 32 · The Fool

A gallery of the fool: blind before the mirror, obstinate as the stone that never soaks, trapped like the monkey by his own clenched fist, taking foul for fragrant like the fly — and even a pandit may be one. The closing wisdom: with a fool, silence is best.

1 · The Marks of the Gurmukh

pahilā guramukh janam lai bhai vich varatai hoi iāṇā | gur sikh lai gurasikh hoi bhāi bhagat vich kharā siāṇā | gurasikh suṇ mannai samajh māṇ mahat vich rahai nimāṇā | gur sikh gurasikh pūjadā pairī pai rahirās lubhāṇā | gur sikh manahu na visarai chalaṇ jāṇ jugat mihamāṇā | gurasikh miṭhā bolaṇā niv chalaṇā gurasikh paravāṇā | ghāl khāi gurasikh mil khāṇā |1|

First, taking a Gurmukh birth, he lives in awe, becoming simple. Taking the Guru's teaching and becoming a Gursikh, in love and devotion he is truly wise. The Gursikh, hearing, obeying and understanding, stays lowly in the middle of honour and greatness. The Gursikh worships the Gursikh — falling at the feet, drawn to the Way. He never forgets the Gursikh in his mind — knowing he must leave, a guest in the way he lives. Sweet of speech, walking humbly — the Gursikh is accepted. Working to eat, the Gursikh eats in company, sharing what he has.

2 · The Gurmukh — Strong, Yet Humble

disaṭ daras liv sāvadhān sabad surat chetann siāṇā | nām dān isanān diṛ man bach karam karai melāṇā | gurasikh thoṛā bolaṇā thoṛā sauṇā thoṛā khāṇā | par tan par dhan paraharai par nindā suṇ man saramāṇā | gur mūrat gur sabad hai sādhasaṅgat samasar paravāṇā | ik man ik arādhaṇā dutīā nāsat bhāvai bhāṇā | guramukh hodai tāṇ nitāṇā |2|

Sight fixed on that face, watchful; awareness in the Word, conscious and wise. Making firm the Name, the giving and the clean living, he joins thought, word and deed together. The Gursikh speaks little, sleeps little and eats little. He leaves other people's bodies and wealth alone; and hearing others slandered, his mind is ashamed. The Guru's image is the Guru's Word; the holy company is accepted as its equal. With a single mind he worships the One, and no second; he loves God's Will. The Gurmukh, having strength, is as one with none.

3 · The Manmukh, Bereft, is Foolish and Alone

guramukh raṅg na disaī hondī akhīn annhā soī | guramukh samajh na sakaī hondī kannīn bolā hoī | guramukh sabad na gāvaī hondī jībhai guṅgā goī | charan kaval dī vās viṇ nakaṭā honde nak aloī | guramukh kār vihūṇiā hondī karī luñjā dukh roī | guramat chit na vasaī so mat hīṇ na lahandā ḍhoī | mūrakh nāl na koi sathoī |3|

He does not see the Gurmukh's colour — he has eyes and is blind. He cannot understand the Gurmukh — he has ears and is deaf. He does not sing the Word — he has a tongue and is mute. Without the scent of the lotus feet, he has a nose and is disgraced. Empty of the Gurmukh's work, he has hands and is maimed, weeping in pain. The one in whose mind the Guru's wisdom does not live — that witless one finds no shelter. Nobody is a companion to the fool.

4 · The Fool — the Owl

ghugghū sujh na sujhaī vasadī chhaḍ rahai ojāṛī | il paṛhāī nā paṛhai chūhe khāi uḍe dehāṛī | vās na āvai vāns no haumai ag na chandaṇ vāṛī | saṅkh samundahu sakhaṇā guramat hīṇā deh vigāṛī | simmal birakh na saphal hoi āp gaṇāe vaḍā anāṛī | mūrakh phakaṛ pavai rihāṛī |4|

The owl sees nothing — it leaves the settled place and lives in the waste. The kite, though taught, learns nothing — it eats mice and flies about all day. No fragrance comes to the bamboo — in the fire of pride, it is no sandal grove. The conch, though from the sea, is empty — and empty of the Guru's wisdom, the body is spoiled. The silk-cotton tree bears no fruit — counting itself great, the great fool. The fool falls into quarrels and squabbles.

5 · A Mirror Before the Blind

annhe age ārasī nāī dhar na vadhāī pāvai | bole age gāvīai sūmm na ḍūm kavāi painhāvai | puchhai masalat guṅgiahu vigaṛai kamm javāb na āvai | phulavāṛī vaṛ guṇaguṇā mālī no na inām divāvai | lūle nāl viāhīai kiv gal mil kāmaṇ gal lāvai | sabhanā chāl suhāvaṇī laṅgaṛā kare lakhāu laṅgāvai | lukai na mūrakh āp lakhāvai |5|

A mirror held before a blind man — the barber sets it up, and gets no glad reward. Singing before the deaf — the miser gives the singer no robe. Asking advice of a mute — the work is spoiled, and no answer comes. Going into the flower garden and humming, he gets the gardener no reward. Marrying a cripple — how will the woman clasp him neck to neck? Everyone else has a lovely walk; the lame one makes a show of it and limps. The fool cannot hide — he shows himself off.

6 · The Fool's Obstinacy

pathar mūl na bhijaī sau varhhiān jal andar vasai | pathar khet na jammaī chār mahīne indar varasai | pathar channaṇ ragaṛīe channaṇ vāṅg na pathar ghasai | sil vaṭe nit pīsade ras kas jāṇai vās na rasai | chakī phirai sahansavār khāi na pīai bhukh na tasai | pathar ghaṛai varataṇā heṭh ute hoi ghaṛā viṇasai | mūrakh surat na jas apajasai |6|

A stone does not soak through at all, though it lies a hundred years in water. A stone sprouts no crop, though Indra rain four months on it. Rub sandal on a stone, and the stone does not wear away as sandal does. The millstones grind every day, and never know a taste, a scent or a sweetness. The mill turns a thousand rounds, and never eats, never drinks and never hungers. A stone becomes a pot for use — and above and below, in the grinding, the pot is ruined. The fool's awareness cannot tell praise from blame.

7 · The Fool is a Stone

pāras pathar saṅg hai pāras paras na kañchan hovai | hīre māṇak patharahu pathar koi na hār parovai | vaṭ javāhar tolīai mul na tul vikāi samovai | pathar andar asaṭadhāt pāras paras suvann alovai | pathar phaṭak jhalakaṇā bahu raṅgī hoi raṅg na govai | pathar vās na sāu hai man kaṭhor hoi āp vigovai | kar mūrakhāī mūrakh rovai |7|

The gold-making stone and an ordinary stone lie together — but the ordinary stone, touched by it, does not become gold. Diamond and ruby come from stone, and yet no common stone is strung on a necklace. Weighed against a weight-stone, the jewel is priced — and the stone is not. Among the stones is the eight-metal ore; touched by that stone it turns to gold. The crystal glitters in many colours, but never takes a fast colour. A stone has no scent and no taste — hard of heart, it ruins itself. Doing folly, the fool weeps.

8 · Do Not Keep the Fool's Company

jiun maṇ kāle sap sir sār na jāṇai visū bhariā | jāṇ kathūrī mirag tan jhāṛān siṅadā phirai aphariā | jiun kar motī sip vich maram na jāṇai andar dhariā | jiun gāī thaṇ chichuṛī dudh na pīai lohū jariā | bagulā taraṇ na sikhio tīrath nāi na pathar tariā | nāl siāṇe bhalī bhikh mūrakh rājahu kāj na sariā | mekhī hoi vigāṛai khariā |8|

Like the jewel on the black snake's head — it does not know its worth, being full of poison. Like the musk in the deer's body — it goes about beating the bushes, sniffing, puffed up, not knowing the musk is inside it. Like the pearl inside the shell — it does not know the secret set within it. Like the tick on the cow's udder — it drinks no milk, being full of blood. The heron never learned to swim; and bathing at a holy place, a stone still does not float. Better to beg with the wise than to hold a kingdom with a fool — the work is never done. Like a peg in the wrong place, it spoils what is good.

9 · Stay Aloof From the Fool

kaṭaṇ chaṭaṇ kutiān kutai halak tai man sūgāvai | ṭhaṇḍhā tatā koilā kālā kar kai hath jalāvai | jiu chakachūndhar sap dī annhā koṛhī kar dikhalāvai | jāṇ rasaulī deh vich vaḍhī pīṛ rakhī saramāvai | vans kapūt kulachhaṇā chhaḍiā baṇai na vich samāvai | mūrakh het na lāīai parahar vair alipat valāvai | duhīn pavāṛī dukh vihāvai |9|

The biting and licking of dogs — and the mind loathes the mad dog. Cold or hot, the coal is black, and it burns the hand. As with the shrew and the snake, the touch makes a man blind or leprous. Know it as a tumour in the body — cutting it is pain, and keeping it is shame. A bad son with ill marks in the family — cast him off and he does not suit, keep him in and he does not fit. Give the fool no love; but leaving enmity out of it, pass him by, free. On both counts, love or enmity, the time passes in sorrow.

10 · The Fool is Unsteady and Takes to Faults

jiu hāthī dā nhāvaṇā bāhar nikal kheh uḍāvai | jiu ūṭhai dā khāvaṇā parahar kaṇak javāhā khāvai | kamale dā kachhoṭaṛā kade lak kade sīs valāvai | jiun kar ṭuṇḍe hathaṛā so chutīn so vāt vatāvai | sannhī jāṇ luhār dī khiṇ jal vich khin agan samāvai | makhī bāṇ kubāṇ hai lai duragandh sugandh na bhāvai | mūrakh dā kihu hath na āvai |10|

Like the elephant's bathing — coming out, it throws dust over itself. Like the camel's eating — leaving the wheat, it eats the thorn bush. Like the madman's loincloth — now on the waist, now on the head. Like the maimed man's hand — now to the mouth, now off astray. Know it as the blacksmith's tongs — one moment in water, one moment in fire. The fly's flight is a wrong flight — it takes the foul, and does not like the fragrant. Nothing ever comes to the fool's hand.

11 · Fools Trap Themselves

totā nalī na chhaḍaī āpaṇ hathīn phāthā chīkai | bāndar muṭh na chhaḍaī ghar ghar nachai jhīkaṇ jhīkai | gadahu aṛī na chhaḍaī chīghī paudī hīkaṇ hīkai | kute chakī chaṭaṇī pūchh na sidhī dhrīkaṇ dhrīkai | karan kuphakaṛ mūrakhān sap gae phaṛ phāṭan līkai | pag lahāi gaṇāi sarīkai |11|

The parrot will not leave the tube-trap — caught by its own hands, it screeches. The monkey will not let go its fistful — from house to house it dances, whimpering. The donkey will not give up its stubbornness — braying, it is beaten. The dog licks the millstone — and its tail never straightens, however it is pulled. Fools do their squabbling — they grasp snakes and are torn. Losing their turban, they count themselves among rivals just to show off.

12 · The Fool is No Friend of Truth

annhā ākhe laṛ marai khusī hovai suṇ nāu sujākhā | bholā ākhe bhalā mann ahamak jāṇ ajāṇ na bhākhā | dhorī ākhai has de balad vakhāṇ karai man mākhā | kāun siāṇap jāṇadā visaṭā khāi na bhākh subhākhā | nāu surīt kurīt dā musak bilāī gāṇḍī sākhā | heṭh khaṛā thū thū karai gidaṛ hath na āvai dākhā | bolavigāṛ mūrakh bheḍākhā |12|

Call a blind man 'clear-sighted' and he will fight you to the death; call him by a flattering false name, and he is pleased. Call a simple man 'good', and he takes it kindly; call a fool 'fool', whether he knows it or not, and do not speak it. Call an ox 'burden-carrier' with a laugh, and he takes offence. The crow thinks itself clever, eats filth, and its speech is no sweet speech. Good manners and bad — standing under the vine, the jackal cries 'ugh, ugh', and the grapes never come to its hand. The fool who spoils speech is like a sheep.

13 · The Fool is Without Virtue, Full of Pride

rukhān vich kurukh hai araṇḍ añāī āp gaṇāe | pidā jiu paṅkherūān bah bah ḍālī bahut baphāe | bheḍ bhiviṅgā muhu karai taraṇāpai dih chār valāe | muhu akhī nak kan jiun indrīān vich gāṇḍ sadāe | mīā gharahu nikālīai tarakas daravāje ṭaṅgavāe | mūrakh andar māṇasān viṇ guṇ garab karai ālāe | majalas baiṭhā āp lakhāe |13|

Among the trees, the bad tree is the castor — for no reason it counts itself great. Like the little pidda bird among the birds, sitting and sitting on the branch and puffing itself up. The sheep makes a crooked mouth, and its youth passes in four days. Mouth, eyes, nose, ears — and then the lowest organs among the senses; so it is called. The 'master' is thrown out of the house, and the quiver hung on the door in disgrace. Among people, the fool, with no goodness in him, does his boasting and his clamour. Sitting in the assembly, he shows himself off.

14 · Who is the Fool?

mūrakh tis no ākhīai bol na samajhai bol na jāṇai | horo kihu kar puchhīai horo kiu kar ākh vakhāṇai | sikh dei samajhāīai arath anarath manai vich āṇai | vaḍā asamajh na samajhaī surat vihūṇā hoi hairāṇai | guramat chit na āvaī duramat mitr satr paravāṇai | aganī sapahun varajīai guṇ vich avaguṇ karai dhiṅāṇai | mūte rovai mān na siñāṇai |14|

Call him a fool who does not understand speech, and does not know how to speak. Ask him one thing, and he answers another. Given instruction and taught, he takes the meaning for nonsense in his mind. The great dolt does not understand — without awareness, he is astonished. The Guru's wisdom never comes into his mind; in bad thinking he takes a friend for an enemy. Warned off fire and snake, he still forces his way into wrong instead of good. He weeps when he is soiled, and does not even know his own mother.

15 · The Marks of the Fool

rāhu chhaḍ ujhaṛ pavai āgū no bhulā kar jāṇai | beṛe vich bahālīai kud pavai vich vahaṇ dhiṅāṇai | sughaṛān vich bahiṭhiān bolivigāṛ ughāṛ vakhāṇai | sughaṛān mūrakh jāṇadā āp sughaṛ hoi viratīhāṇai | dih no rāt vakhāṇadā chāmachaṛik jiven ṭānāṇai | guramat mūrakh chit na āṇai |15|

Leaving the road, he falls into the wilds, and thinks the guide made the mistake. Sitting in the boat, he jumps by force into the current. Sitting among the wise, the speech-spoiler exposes himself as soon as he speaks. He thinks the wise are fools, and holds himself the wise man of the trade. He calls the day night, like the bat and the blind firefly. The fool never brings the Guru's wisdom to mind.

16 · The Fool's End

vaid chaṅgerī uṭhaṇī lai sil vaṭā kacharā bhannā | sevak sikhī vaidagī mārī buḍhī rovan rannā | pakaṛ chalāiā rāvalai paudī ughaṛ gae su kannā | puchhai ākh vakhāṇiun ughaṛ gaiā pāj parachhannā | pārakhūā chuṇ kaḍhiā jiu kachakaṛā na ralai ratannā | mūrakh akalī bāharā vānsahu mūl na hovī gannā | māṇas dehī pasū upannā |16|

The doctor had a good she-camel; the fool took a grinding-stone to break an unripe melon on her, and killed her. The servant, having learned a little doctoring, killed the old woman — and the women wail. Seized and hauled off by the Rawal yogis, his pierced ears tore open under the beating. Questioned and made to explain, his hidden pretence was exposed. The assayer picks it out — as glass does not mix with rubies. The fool, empty of sense, is like the bamboo — it can never be sugarcane. In a human body, a beast is born.

By serving Mahadev, the banker's son won a boon: spirits in the shape of Jain monks came and lodged in his house, and the more he struck them with a weapon, the more wealth they shook out. The barber, watching, could not rest for greed, sitting or sleeping. So he too fetched Jain monks and struck them — but hear the Lord's judgement: at the lonely burning-ground he was seized by the hair and dashed to the ground; and by whose strength could he pull his hair free? The fool had sown a crooked seed.

The mute oil-presser Ganga held a debate with a scholar, and the world watched. The scholar raises one finger; Ganga, by his own sign, shows two. Then the scholar raises five fingers; Ganga shakes his fist, past all writing. The scholar falls at his feet, rises and goes away beaten, lost inside his learned costume. (The scholar read it as: the One is both without qualities and with them, two aspects; and the Highest One is the five elements meeting. But Ganga meant only, 'I will break both your eyes with my fist.') The fool-scholar's awareness is a special joke.

Bathing at a cold well, he forgets his turban and comes home bare-headed. In the house the foolish women, seeing the bad omen, raise a wail of mourning. The women, seeing each other beat their breasts, cry out loud, fearless. The neighbours come to the mourning; women and men gather in rows. The barber's wife asks the mourners: 'In whose name shall I raise the wail?' Going to the in-laws they ask, 'Who has died?' — and the daughter-in-law is asked for the answer. A crows' clamour is the company of the fool.

If you instruct a fool, he cannot tell shade from sun. His eyes cannot tell brass from gold, or bronze from silver. He does not know the taste of oil from butter, though the jar and the pitcher stand beside him. Empty of awareness, night and day, light is the same to him as thick darkness. The scent of musk and of garlic, tanned leather and fine stitching — all one to him. He cannot tell enemy from friend, or the fast dye from the false, untouched and unmoved. With a fool, silence is the better way.
