1 · The Greatness of the True Guru
satigur purakh agamm hai niravair nirālā | jāṇahu dharatī dharam kī sachī dharamasālā | jehā bījai so luṇai phal karam samhālā | jiu kar niramal ārasī jag vekhaṇ vālā | jehā muhu kar bhālīai teho vekhālā | sevak daragah surakharū vemukh muhu kālā |1|
The True Guru-Being is past reaching, without enmity, apart from all. Know it as the earth of right living, the true house of worship. As you sow, so you harvest — the fruit of deeds is kept. As in a clean mirror, the world is the one who looks. Whatever face you make and look with, that is what is shown back. The servant's face is bright in the Court; the face of the one who turns away is black.
2 · Hiding One's Guru
jo gur gopai āpaṇā kiu sijhai chelā | saṅgal ghat chalāīai jam panth ikelā | lahai sajāī narak vich uhu kharā duhelā | lakh chaurāsīh bhaudiān phir hoi na melā | janam padārath hāriā jiu jūe khelā | hath maroṛai sir dhunai uhu lahai na velā |2|
The one who hides his own Guru — how shall that disciple succeed? Chained, he is driven off, alone on Death's road. He gets his punishment in hell — that one is the most wretched of all. Wandering through eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life, he never meets the Guru again. He loses the priceless birth, as a man loses at dice. He wrings his hands and beats his head — and that hour never comes again.
3 · The Guru-Hider Turns Away
āp na vañai sāhure sikh lok suṇāvai | kant na puchhai vātaṛī suhāg gaṇāvai | chūhā khaḍ na māvaī lak chhaj valāvai | mant na hoi aṭhūhiā hath sapīn pāvai | sar sannhai āgās no phir mathai āvai | duhī sarāīn jaradarū bemukh pachhutāvai |3|
He does not go to the true home himself, and yet he preaches to the Sikhs. She never asks her husband's word, and yet she boasts of being a wife. Like a mouse that cannot fit in its hole, tying a winnowing fan to its waist. Having no charm for scorpions, he puts his hand to snakes. He shoots an arrow at the sky — and it comes back down on his own head. In both worlds his face is yellow — the one who turns away comes to regret it.
4 · He Takes No Relish
ratan maṇī gal bāndarai kihu kīm na jāṇai | kaṛachhī sāu na sammhalai bhojan ras khāṇai | ḍaḍū chikaṛ vās hai kavalai na siñāṇai | nābh kathūrī mirag dai phiradā hairāṇai | gujar goras vech kai khal sūṛī āṇai | bemukh mūlahu ghuthiā dukh sahai jamāṇai |4|
A jewel on a monkey's neck — it knows nothing of its worth. The ladle knows nothing of the taste, though it stirs the flavoured food. The frog lives in the same mud, and never knows the lotus. The musk in the deer's own navel — and it wanders about astonished. The milkman sells the milk and brings home the oil-cake and husks. The one who turns away, missing the root, suffers the pain of Death.
5 · He Suffers Though All is Present
sāvaṇ vaṇ harīāvale sukai jāvāhā | sabh ko sarasā varasade jhūre jolāhā | sabhanā rāt milāvaṛā chakavī dorāhā | saṅkh samundahu sakhaṇā rovai de dhāhā | rāhahu ujhaṛ jo pavai musai de phāhā | tiu jag andar bemukhān nit ubhe sāhā |5|
In the rainy month the woods turn green; and the camel-thorn withers. Everyone is gladdened by the rain; the weaver grieves for his wet yarn. All creatures meet at night; the sheldrake is at the crossroads of parting. The conch, though from the sea, is empty — it cries and wails. Whoever falls off the road into the wilds is robbed and noosed. And so in the world those who turn away are always heaving a deep sigh.
6 · He Blames Another for His Fault
gidaṛ dākh nā apaṛai ākhai thūh kauṛī | nachaṇ nach nā jāṇaī ākhai bhui sauṛī | bolai agai gāvīai bhairau so gauṛī | hansān nāl ṭaṭīharī kiu pahuchai dauṛī | sāvaṇ vaṇ harīāvale ak jammai auṛī | bemukh sukh nā dekhaī jiu chhuṭaṛ chhauṛī |6|
The jackal cannot reach the grape and says, 'It is sour.' The dancer who cannot dance says, 'The ground is cramped.' Sing before the deaf, whatever the melody, and he does not hear it. How shall the little lapwing keep up, running with the swans? In the rainy month the woods turn green; but the milkweed sprouts in the drought, out of place. The one who turns away sees no joy, like the abandoned barren woman.
7 · The Fruit of His Company
bheḍai pūchhal lagiān kiu pār laṅghīai | bhūtai kerī dosatī nit sahasā jīai | nadī kinārai rukhaṛā vesāhu nā kīai | miratak nāl vīāhīai sohāg na thīai | vis halāhal bīj kai kiu amiu lahīai | bemukh setī pirahaṛī jam ḍaṇḍ sahīai |7|
Clinging to a sheep's tail, how will anyone cross over? Friendship with a ghost — the heart is always in dread. Do not trust a tree on the river's bank. Marry a corpse — and no wifehood comes of it. Sow deadly poison — how will you get nectar? Love the one who turns away, and you suffer Death's rod.
8 · He is Himself at Fault
koraṛ moṭh na rijhaī kar aganī jos | sahas phalahu ik vigaṛai taravar kī dos | ṭibai nīr nā ṭhāharai ghaṇ varas gaios | viṇ sañjam rogī marai chit vaid na ros | aviāvar na viāpaī masatak likhios | bemukh paṛhai na ilam jiu avaguṇ sabh os |8|
The hard bean does not cook, however you stoke the fire. If one out of a thousand fruits spoils, it is not the tree's fault. Water does not stay on a mound, though the cloud rain over it. Without restraint the sick man dies — do not blame the doctor in your heart. The unyielding man is untouched — it is written on his forehead. The one who turns away learns no knowledge, and every fault is his own.
9 · His Earning is at Fault
annhai chand na disaī jag jot sabāī | bolā rāg na samajhaī kihu ghaṭ na jāī | vās na āvai guṇaguṇai paramal mahikāī | guṅgai jībh nā ughaṛai sabh sabad suhāī | satigur sāgar sev kai nidh sabhanā pāī | bemukh hath ghaghūṭiā tis dos kamāī |9|
The blind man does not see the moon, though its light fills the world. The deaf man does not understand the melody, though there is nothing lacking in it. No scent comes to the blocked-up nose, though the perfume drifts by. The mute's tongue does not open, though everything is lovely in the Word. Serving the True Guru, the ocean, everyone finds the treasure. The one who turns away has fists full of nothing — the fault is his own earning.
10 · The Writ on His Brow
ratan upanne sāirahu bhī pāṇī khārā | sujhahu sujhan tin loa aulaṅg vichikārā | dharatī upajai ann dhan vich kalar bhārā | īsar tusai horanā ghar khapar chhārā | jiun haṇavant kachhoṭaṛā kiā karai vichārā | bemukh masatak likhiā kauṇ meṭaṇahārā |10|
Jewels rose out of the sea, and yet its water is salt. The three worlds see by the sun, and yet an eclipse comes between. The earth grows grain and wealth, and yet in it is heavy salt-marsh. Shiva is pleased, and yet others get a beggar's bowl of ashes. Like Hanuman's loincloth — what can the poor thing do? What is written on the forehead of the one who turns away — who can rub it out?
11 · He is False
gāīn ghar gosāīnān mādhāṇ ghaṛāe | ghoṛe suṇ saudāgarān chābak mul āe | dekh parāe bhājavāṛ ghar gāhu ghatāe | suinā haṭ sarāph de suniār sadāe | andar ḍhoī nā lahai bāhar bāphāe | bemukh badal chhāv hai kūṛo ālāe |11|
Hearing of the cows at the herdsman's house, he has a churning-staff made, and owns no cow. Hearing of the merchants' horses, he goes and buys a whip, and owns no horse. Seeing somebody else's threshing floor, he sets up a grinding at home. Having no gold at the goldsmith's shop, he calls himself a goldsmith. He finds no shelter inside, and struts about outside. The one who turns away is a passing shade of cloud — he speaks only falsehood.
12 · He is Emptied
makhaṇ laiā virolikai chhāh chhuṭaṛ hoī | pīṛ laī ras ganniahun chhil chhuhai na koī | raṅg majīṭhahu nikalai aḍh lahai na soī | vās laī phulavāṛīahu phir milai na ḍhoī | kāiā hans vichhunniā tis ko na sathoī | bemukh suke rukh jiun vekhai sabh loī |12|
The butter is taken by churning — and the buttermilk is left and thrown away. The juice is pressed out of the cane — and nobody touches the peel. The colour is drawn out of the madder — and the spent root does not fetch a halfpenny. The scent is taken from the flower garden — and the spent flower finds no shelter again. When the swan-soul parts from the body, nobody is its companion. The one who turns away is like a dried-up tree, and the whole world sees it.
13 · How He is Disciplined
jiu kar khūhahu nikalai gal badhe pāṇī | jiu maṇ kāle sap sir has dei na jāṇī | jāṇ kathūrī mirag tan mar mukai āṇī | tel tilahu kiu nikalai viṇ pīṛe ghāṇī | jiu muhu bhanne garī de nalīer nisāṇī | bemukh lohā sādhīai vagadī vādāṇī |13|
As water comes out of the well only when it is roped at the neck. As the jewel on the black snake's head — laughing, it does not know how to give it up. As the musk in the deer's body — it comes out only when the deer dies. How will oil come out of the sesame without pressing in the mill? As the coconut gives its kernel only when its mouth is broken. The one who turns away is disciplined like iron, as the bellows blow.
14 · Everything of His is Reversed
mahurā miṭhā ākhīai ruṭhī no tuṭhī | bujhiā vaḍā vakhāṇīai sāvārī kuṭhī | jaliā ṭhaṇḍhā gaī no āī te uṭhī | ahamak bholā ākhīai sabh gal apuṭhī | ujaṛ traṭī bemukhān tis ākhan vuṭhī | chorai sandī māu jiun luk rovai guṭhī |14|
Deadly poison he calls sweet; the angry man, pleased. The put-out fire he calls great; the well-dressed, cut down. The burnt he calls cool; the departed, arrived. The dolt he calls simple and good — every word of his is upside down. The wilds, the ill-starred places of those who turn away — those they call 'settled'. Like the thief's mother, who weeps hidden in a corner.
15 · The Fruit of His Company
vaṛīai kajal koṭhaṛī muhu kālakh bharīai | kalar khetī bījīai kihu kāj nā sarīai | ṭuṭī pīṅghai pīṅghīai pai ṭoe marīai | kannā phaṛ manatārūān kiu dutar tarīai | ag lāi mandar savai tis nāl na pharīai | tiun ṭhag saṅgat bemukhān jīa jokhahu ḍarīai |15|
Go into a soot-house, and your face fills with blackness. Sow a crop in salt-marsh — and no work is done. Swing on a broken swing — you fall into a pit and die. Held by the ears by false swimmers, how will you swim the hard crossing? Sleep in a house set on fire — do not cling to such a one. So with the company of the cheat who turns away — for your very life, fear it.
16 · They are Grievous Sinners
bāmhaṇ gāīn vans ghāt aparādh karāre | mad pī jūe khelade johan paranāre | muhan parāī lachhamī ṭhag chor chagāre | visās dhrohī akirataghaṇ pāpī hatiāre | lakh karoṛī joṛīan aṇagaṇat apāre | ikat lūi na pujanī bemukh guraduāre |16|
Killing a Brahmin, a cow, a whole family — hard offences; drinking wine, gambling, eyeing other men's women; robbing other people's wealth — thieves, cheats and gossips; the treacherous, the ungrateful, sinners and murderers; gather millions of these, past counting and past bound — and they do not equal one hair of turning your face away from the Guru's door.
17 · The Sin Does Not Lift
gaṅg jamun godāvarī kulakhet sidhāre | mathurā māiā ajudhiā kānsī kedāre | gaiā pirāg sarasutī gomatī duāre | jap tap sañjam hom jag sabh dev juhāre | akhī paraṇai je bhavai tihu loa majhāre | mūl na utarai hatiā bemukh guraduāre |17|
He goes to the Ganga, the Jumna, the Godavari, to Kurukshetra; to Mathura, Maya, Ayodhya, Kashi and Kedar; to Gaya, Prayag, Saraswati, Dwarka and the Gomti; chanting, hard discipline, self-denial, fire-offering, sacrifice — bowing to all the gods; and if with his own eyes he wanders the three worlds — still the sin of turning his face from the Guru's door does not lift at all.
18 · Without the True Guru, No Peace
koṭīn sādīn ketaṛe jaṅgal bhūpālā | thalīn varole ketaṛe parabat betālā | nadīān nāle ketaṛe saravar asarālā | ambar tāre ketaṛe bisīar pātālā | bhambhalabhūse bhuliān bhavajal bharanālā | ikas satigur bāhare sabh āl jañjālā |18|
How many the salty seas, the forests and their kings; how many the dust-devils in the wastes, and the demon-mountains; how many the rivers and streams, and the terrible lakes; how many the stars in the sky, and the serpents in the world below; the blunderers, fooled, in the ocean of fear — without the one True Guru, it is all a tangle of home.
19 · They are Centreless
bahutī gharīn parāhuṇā jiu rahadā bhukhā | sāñjhā bab na roīai chit chint na chukhā | bahalī ḍūmī ḍhaḍh jiu ohu kisai na dhukhā | vaṇ vaṇ kāun na sohaī kiu māṇai sukhā | jiu bahu mitī vesuā tan vedan dukhā | viṇ gur pūjan horanā barane bemukhā |19|
As a guest in too many houses goes hungry; as a father shared by many is not fully mourned, with nobody's mind on him; as the drum belonging to too many minstrels warms nobody; as the crow suits no grove — how shall it ever enjoy peace? As the woman of many friends — pain and disease in the body; so, without worshipping the Guru and worshipping others instead, are those who turn away described.
20 · The Empty-Proud are Ghosts
vāi suṇāe chhānaṇī tis uṭh uṭhāle | tāṛī mār ḍarāindā maiṅgal matavāle | bāsak nāgai sāmhaṇā jiun dīvā bāle | sīhun sarajai sahā jiun akhī vekhāle | sāir lahar na pujanī pāṇī paranāle | aṇahodā āp gaṇāide memukh betāle |20|
He shakes a sieve of wind and makes it seem to rise; he claps his hands and frightens the drunken elephant with an empty threat; he faces the great serpent like a man lighting a lamp against the sun; like a hare against the risen sun-lion, he dares to show his eyes; the channel's water never reaches the sea's wave — those who turn away, having nothing, count themselves great, like ghosts.
21 · To Contend With Them is Fruitless
nār bhatārahu bāharī sukh sej nā chaṛīai | put na mannai māpiān kamajātīn vaṛīai | vaṇajārā sāhahu phirai vesāhu na jaṛīai | sāhib sauhain āpaṇe hathīār na phaṛīai | kūṛ na pahuñchai sach no sau ghāṛat ghaṛīai | mundrān kann jināṛīān tinhān nāl na aṛīai |21|34|
The wife without her husband never mounts the bed of joy; the son who does not obey his parents falls into low estate; the trader who wanders away from the banker gets no credit; face to face with your own Master, you do not grasp a weapon; falsehood never reaches truth, however a hundred ways it is forged; and with those who have earrings pierced in their ears — do not contend.
