Chapter 35

Var 35 · The Slanderer and the Disguise

The nindak who cannot stop slandering, and slanders even the Guru — undone as Harnakash, Ravan and Kans were; the ungrateful and the salt-betrayer; the covetous greed for the langar-offering; and the 'role' the Guru plays to test his Sikhs, whole through which are the rare, by the Guru's grace.

1 · The Slanderer

kutā rāj bahālīai phir chakī chaṭai | sapai dudh pīālīai vihu mukhahu saṭai | pathar pāṇī rakhīai man haṭh na ghaṭai | choā chandan pariharai khar kheh palaṭai | tiu nindak par nidahun haṭh mūl na haṭai | āpaṇ hathī āpaṇī jaṛ āp upaṭai |1|

Seat a dog on a throne, and it still goes off to lick the millstone. Give a snake milk to drink, and it spews poison out of its mouth. Keep a stone in water, and its hard heart never softens. The donkey leaves the sandal-oil and rolls in the dust. And so the gossip, out of sheer stubbornness, never turns from slandering others. With his own hands he pulls up his own root.

kāun kapūr nā chakhaī duragandh sukhāvai | hāthī nīr nhavālīai sir chhār uḍāvai | tumme ammrit siñjīai kauṛat na jāvai | simal rukh sarevīai phal hath nā āvai | nindak nām vihūṇiā satisaṅg nā bhāvai | annhā āgū je thīai sabh sāth muhāvai |2|

The crow does not taste camphor — the foul smell is what pleases it. Bathe an elephant in water, and it throws dust on its head. Water the bitter gourd with nectar, and its bitterness does not go. Serve the silk-cotton tree, and no fruit comes to hand. The gossip, empty of the Name, does not like the holy company. If a blind man becomes the guide, the whole caravan is robbed.

3 · The Same

lasaṇ lukāiā nā lukai bah khājai kūṇai | kālā kambal ujalā kiun hoi sabūṇai | ḍemū khakhar jo chhuhai disai muh sūṇai | kitai kamm nā āvaī lāvaṇ bin lūṇai | nindak nām visāriā gur giān vihūṇai | halat palat sukh nā lahai dukhīā sir jhūṇai |3|

Garlic hidden does not stay hidden — eat it in a corner, and the smell gives you away. How will a black blanket be whitened with soap? Whoever touches the wasp's comb, his face shows the sting. It is of no use at all, like a seasoning with no salt in it. The gossip, empty of the Guru's knowledge, has forgotten the Name. Here and hereafter he finds no peace — the wretched one hangs his head.

4 · Slandering the Guru

ḍāiṇ māṇas khāvaṇī put burā na maṅgai | vaḍā vikaramī ākhīai dhī bhaiṇahu saṅgai | rāje dhrohu kamānvade raibār suraṅgai | bajar pāp na utaran jāi kīchan gaṅgai | tharahar kambai narak jam suṇ nindak ḍhaṅgai | nindā bhalī na kisai dī gur nind kuḍhaṅgai |4|

The witch who eats men does not ask that her own son be harmed. The great sinner, they say, is the one who lies with daughter and sister. Kings do their treachery through fair-spoken envoys. Grievous sins do not lift, though a man go and be cremated at the Ganga. Hell and Death tremble, hearing of the gossip's way. To slander anyone is not good — and to slander the Guru is the crookedest of all.

5 · Examples of Guru-Slander

nindā kar haraṇākhasai vekhahu phal vaṭe | laṅk luṭāī rāvaṇai masatak das kaṭe | kans gaiā saṇ lasakarai sabh dait saṅghaṭe | vans gavāiā kairavān khūhaṇ lakh phaṭe | dant bakatr sisapāl de dand hoe khaṭe | nindā koi na sijhio iu ved ughaṭe | durabāse ne sarāp de yādav sabh taṭe |5|

See what fruit Harnakash reaped for his slandering. Ravan had Lanka plundered, and his ten heads struck off his brow. Kans went out with his army, and all the demons were slain. The Kauravas lost their whole line, and a hundred thousand troops were cut down. Dant-Bakra and Sisupal were undone. No slanderer ever succeeded — so the Vedas proclaim. Durbasa's curse cut down all the Yadavs.

6 · Reckoning the Guru's Faults

sabhanā de sir gundīan gañjī guraṛāvai | kann tanauṛe kāmaṇī būṛī bariṛāve | nathān nak navelīān nakaṭī na sukhāvai | kajal akhī haraṇākhīān kāṇī kuralāvai | sabhanā chāl suhāvaṇī laṅgaṛī laṅgaṛāvai | gaṇat gaṇai guradev dī tis dukh vihāvai |6|

Everyone has their hair braided; the bald one grumbles in envy. The woman with lovely ears wears her ear-drops; the deaf one mumbles. The maidens wear their nose-rings; the one with the cut nose does not like it. The doe-eyed line their eyes with black; the one-eyed wails. Everyone has a lovely walk; the lame one limps. The one who counts up the Guru's faults — his time passes in sorrow.

7 · The Guru-Slanderer's Birth is Wasted

apat karīr nā maulīai de dos basantai | saṇḍh saputī nā thīai kaṇatāvai kantai | kalar khet nā jammaī ghaṇahar varasantai | paṅgā pichhai chaṅgiān avaguṇ guṇavantai | sāir vich ghaṅghūṭiān bahu ratan anantai | janam gavāi akārathā gur gaṇat gaṇantai |7|

The leafless karir bush does not bloom, and blames the spring. The barren woman bears no good son, and rails at her husband. The salt-marsh field sprouts nothing, though the cloud rain over it. Faults follow the good; and the good man meets with ill. In the sea are the diving-shells, and jewels past counting inside them. He wastes his birth for nothing, the one who counts up the Guru's faults.

8 · The Ungrateful

nā tis bhāre parabatān asamān khahande | nā tis bhāre koṭ gaṛh gharabār disande | nā tis bhāre sāirān nad vāh vahande | nā tis bhāre taruvarān phal suphal phalande | nā tis bhāre jīajant aṇagaṇat phirande | bhāre bhuīn akirataghaṇ mandī hū mande |8|

The heavy mountains scraping the sky are no burden to the earth. The forts, castles and houses in sight are no burden to it. The seas and the flowing rivers are no burden. The trees bearing their good fruit are no burden. The creatures past counting that wander about are no burden. The burden on the earth is the ungrateful one, worst of the worst.

9 · The Same

mad vich ridhā pāikai kute dā mās | dhariā māṇas khoparī tis mandī vās | ratū bhariā kapaṛā kar kajaṇ tās | ḍhak lai chalī chūhaṛī kar bhog bilās | ākh suṇāe puchhiā lāhe visavās | nadarī pavai akirataghaṇ mat hoi viṇās |9|

Dog's flesh cooked in wine, set in a human skull — a foul thing to the earth; covered with a blood-soaked cloth, a low woman carries it off hidden, doing as she pleases; asked about it, she tells, and swears away all trust. If the ungrateful one so much as comes into your sight, beware — or you will be ruined.

10 · The Salt-Betrayer

chor gaiā ghar sāh dai ghar andar vaṛiā | kuchhā kūṇai bhāladā chaubāre chaṛhhiā | suinā rupā paṇḍ bannhh agalāī aṛiā | lobh lahar halakāiā lūṇ hāṇḍā phaṛiā | chukhak lai ke chakhiā tis kakh na khaṛiā | lūṇ harāmī gunahagār dhaṛ dhammaṛ dhaṛiā |10|

A thief went into the banker's house, and got inside. Searching every corner, he climbed up to the upper room. Tying up a bundle of gold and silver, greedy for more, he lingered. Maddened by the wave of greed, he seized a jar of salt. Taking a little, he tasted it — and now he would not carry off a single straw. The one who betrays the salt he ate, the sinner, is dashed to pieces.

11 · The Count of Salt-Eaters

khādhe lūṇ gulām hoi pīh pāṇī ḍhovai | lūṇ khāi kar chākarī raṇ ṭuk ṭuk hovai | lūṇ khāi dhī put hoi sabh lajā dhovai | lūṇ vaṇoṭā khāi kai hath joṛ khaṛovai | vāṭ vaṭāū lūṇ khāi guṇ kaṇṭh parovai | lūṇ harāmī gunahagār mar janam vigovai |11|

Having eaten the salt of loyalty, the servant grinds and carries water. Eating the salt and doing his service, a man is cut to pieces in battle. Eating the salt, becoming son or daughter, washes off the house's shame. The dependant, eating the salt, stands with folded hands. The traveller who eats the salt strings goodness round his neck. The salt-betrayer, the sinner, dies and wastes his birth.

12 · The Greed for the Offering

jiu mirajādā hindūān gaū mās akhāj | musalamāṇā sūarahu saugand viāj | sahurā ghar jāvāīai pāṇī mad rāj | sahā na khāī chūhaṛā māiā muhatāj | jiu miṭhai makhī marai tis hoi akāj | tiu dharamasāl dī jhāk hai vihu khaṇḍūpāj |12|

As the Hindu code holds cow's flesh as not to be eaten; as the Muslims swear off pork; as a son-in-law in his father-in-law's house is owed water as if it were wine; as the outcaste does not eat the hare, though need presses him — each keeps to a code; as a fly dies in the sweet and spoils it — so greed for the offering at the house of worship is poison mixed with sugar.

13 · The Covetous

kharā duhelā jag vich jis andar jhāk | soine no hath pāidā hui vañai khāk | iṭh mit put bhāirā viharan sabh sāk | sog vijog sarāp hai duramat nāpāk | vatai mutaṛ rann jiu dar milai talāk | dukh bhukh dālid ghaṇā dojak autāk |13|

Wretched in the world is the man in whom that greed lives. He puts his hand to gold, and it turns to dust. Dear ones, friends, sons, brothers — all his kin fall out with him. Sorrow, separation and a curse — bad thinking, unclean. He wanders like a divorced woman, who meets only divorce at every door. Sorrow, hunger, deep poverty — hell is his lodging.

14 · The Offering-Food

vigaṛai chāṭā dudh dā kāñjī dī chukhai | sahas maṇā rūī jalai chiṇagārī dhukhai | būr viṇāhe pāṇīai khau lākhahu rukhai | jiu udamādī atīsār khaī rog manukhai | jiu jāl paṅkherū phāsade chugaṇ dī bhukhai | tiu ajar jhāk bhaṇḍār dī viāpe vemukhai |14|

A crock of milk is spoiled by a drop of sour whey. A thousand loads of cotton burn from a smouldering spark. Moss ruins the water; the resin destroys the tree it grows on. Like a wasting sickness in a drunkard, or the wasting disease in a man. As birds are caught in the net in their hunger to peck — so the greed for the storehouse afflicts the one who turns away, past bearing.

15 · How the Greed is Digested

auchar jhāk bhaṇḍār dī chukh lagai chakhī | hoi dukudhā nikalai bhojan mil makhī | rāt sukhālā kiu savai tiṇ andar akhī | kakhā dabī ag jiu ohu rahai na rakhī | jhāk jhakāīai jhākavāl kar bhakh abhakhī | gur parasādī ubare gur sikhā lakhī |15|

That unbearable greed for the storehouse — a little tasted defiles you. It comes up again, like food a fly has fallen into. How will he sleep easy at night, with a straw in his eye? Like fire hidden under straw, it does not stay hidden. The greedy man is tangled by his greed, taking what may be eaten and what may not. By the Guru's grace they are saved — the Guru's Sikhs, the ones who see clearly.

16 · The Marks of the Greedy

jiu ghuṇ khādhī lakaṛī viṇ tāṇ nitāṇī | jāṇ ḍarāvā khet vich nirajīu parāṇī | jiu dhūar jhaṛuvāl dī kiu varasai pāṇī | jiu thaṇ gal vich bakarī duh dudh nā āṇī | jhāke andar jhākavāl tis kiā nīsāṇī | jiu chamuchaṭai gāi mah uh bharam bhulāṇī |16|

Like worm-eaten wood, without strength, with no strength at all. Know it as a scarecrow in the field — a thing with no life in it. Like the smoke of a dust-storm — how will it rain water? Like a goat's teat in the throat — milk it, and no milk comes. The greedy man inside his greed — what is his mark? Like the tick on the cow, lost in delusion.

17 · Testing the Holy From the Unholy

guchhā hoi dhrikānūā kiu vuṛīai dākhai | akai kerī khakhaṛī koī amb nā ākhai | gahaṇe jiun jarapos de nahī soinā sākhai | phaṭak na pujan hīriā oi bhare biākhai | dhaule disan chhāh dudh sādahu guṇ gākhai | tiu sādh asādh parakhīan karatūt su bhākhai |17|

A cluster of the sour dhrikanu berry — how will it be strung with grapes? The pod of the milkweed — nobody calls it a mango. Like gilt ornaments — they do not pass for gold. Crystals never reach the diamonds, however they are heaped up. Buttermilk and milk both look white — and the taste tells their worth. So the holy and the unholy are tested — conduct speaks it.

18 · The Holy Ones of the Four Castes

sāve pīle pān hah oi velahu tuṭai | chitamitāle phophale phal birakhahun chhuṭai | kath hurehī bhūsalī de chāval chuṭai | chūnā disai ujalā dah pathar kuṭai | āp gavāi samāi mil raṅg chīch vahuṭai | tiu chahu varanā vich sādh han guramukh muh juṭai |18|

The betel leaves are green and yellow, plucked from the vine; the mottled areca nuts fall from the tree; the catechu is broken and ground; the lime looks white, burnt out of stone; each loses itself, and meeting, they take on the deep bridal red. So among the four castes are the holy — the Gurmukhs, mouth to mouth in the Word.

19 · The Role-Player

chākar sabh sadāinde sāhib darabāre | niv niv karan juhārīā sabh sai hathīāre | majalas bah bāphāinde bol bolan bhāre | galīe ture nachāinde gajagāh savāre | raṇ vich paiān jāṇīan jodh bhajaṇahāre | tiu sāṅg siñāpan sanamukhā bemukh hatiāre |19|

Everyone is called a servant in the Master's Court; bowing and bowing they make their salutes, all with their hundreds of arms; sitting in the assembly they puff themselves up, speaking heavy words; in the streets they prance their horses, decked out with elephant-trappings. But once fallen in the field, the warriors are known by who runs away. So the true-faced and the faithless are known when the part is tested.

20 · The Guru's Role

je mān hovai jāranī kiu put patāre | gāī māṇak nigaliā peṭ pāṛ na māre | je pir bahu ghar haṇḍhaṇā sat rakhai nāre | amar chalāvai chamm de chākar vechāre | je mad pītā bāmhaṇī loi lujhaṇ sāre | je gur sāṅg varatadā sikh sidak nahāre |20|

If the mother is unfaithful, how shall the son dare test his own? A cow swallows a jewel — you do not rip its belly open and kill it. If the husband roams many houses, the wife still keeps her faithfulness. He rules his poor servants by the bond of loyalty; and if a Brahmin woman drinks wine, all the people quarrel over it. So if the Guru plays a part and tests his Sikhs, the Sikh looks only to his faith.

21 · Whole Amid the Role are the Rare

dharatī upar koṭagaṛ bhuichāl kammande | jhakhaṛ āe taruvarā sarabat halande | ḍav lagai ujāṛ vich sabh ghāh jalande | haṛ āe kin thammīan darīāu vahande | ambar pāṭe thigalī kūṛiār karande | sāṅgai andar sābate se virale bande |21|

On the earth the forts and castles shake in the earthquake. The storm comes, and all the trees are shaken. Wildfire strikes the waste, and all the grass burns. The floods come — and who can stop the flowing rivers? The sky is torn — and the false ones try to patch it. Whole inside the part they are given are the rare few.

22 · By the Guru's Grace

If the mother gives her son poison, to whom is he dear? If the watchman breaks into the house, who is the protector? If the boatman sinks the boat, how shall it land? If the guide leads into the wilds, to whom shall a man cry out? If the fence itself eats the field, who takes care of it? If the Guru fools him by playing a part, what can the poor Sikh make of it?

As paper and salt dissolve in water, and as butter melts away; as the wick and the oil in the lamp burn all night long; as a man flies a kite in the sky, holding the string; as a man puts the eagle-charm in his mouth and makes the snake's bite harmless; as a king wanders as a holy beggar, hears the Word, and his sorrow is rubbed out. Whole inside the part he is given is the one the Guru helps.
