1 · The Deceiver, Black-Faced
tīrath mañjh nivās hai bagulā apatīṇā | lavai babīhā varasadai jal jāi na pīṇā | vāns sugandh na hovaī paramal saṅg līṇā | ghughū sujh na sujhaī karamā dā hīṇā | nābh kathūrī mirag de vatai oḍīṇā | satigur sachā pātisāhu muhu kālai mīṇā |1|
The heron lives at the pilgrimage place, a faithless creature. The rain-bird cries out in the downpour, and still will not go and drink the water. The bamboo takes no fragrance, though it lives right beside the perfume. The owl sees nothing, empty of good fortune. The musk is in the deer's own navel — and it wanders about restless. The True Guru is the true Emperor; and the face of the deceiver is black.
2 · The Deceiver's Reign Is False
nīlārī de maṭ vich pai gidaṛ ratā | jaṅgal andar jāi kai pākhaṇḍ kamatā | dar sevai miragāvalī hoi bahai avatā | karai hakūmat agalī kūṛai mad matā | bolaṇ pāj ughāṛiā jiu mūlī patā | tiu daragah mīṇā mārīai kar kūṛ kupatā |2|
Falling into the dyer's vat, the jackal was dyed blue; and going into the jungle, he practised his pretence. The herds of deer served at his door; and he sat there proud and puffed up. He ruled with a great sway, drunk on the wine of falsehood. But his speaking gave his pretence away, as a radish gives itself away. So the deceiver is struck down in the Court, for his falsehood and his mischief.
3 · The Deceiver Makes No True Company
chor karai nit chorīān oṛak dukh bhārī | nak kann phaṛ vaḍhīai rāvai paranārī | aughaṭ rudhe mirag jiu vit hār jūārī | laṅī kuhal na āvaī par vel piārī | vag na hovan kutīā mīṇe muradārī | pāpahu mūl na tagīai hoi ant khuārī |3|
The thief does his thieving daily, and at the last comes a grievous sorrow. The one who enjoys another man's wife has his nose and ears seized and cut. Like the deer caught in the narrow pass, like the gambler who loses his wealth. The lame woman does not come gracefully — she is dear only to the lover's vine. Dogs never make a herd — the deceivers are like carrion-eaters. Nobody is ever fed by sin — at the last comes ruin.
4 · The Deceiver Will Go to Death's City
chānaṇ chand na pujaī chamakai ṭānāṇā | sāir būnd barābarī kiu ākh vakhāṇā | kīṛī ibh na apaṛai kūṛā tis māṇā | nānehāl vakhāṇadā mā pās iāṇā | jin tūn sāj nivājiā de piṇḍ parāṇā | muḍhahu ghuthahu mīṇiā tudh jamapur jāṇā |4|
The firefly's glow never reaches the moon's light. How shall a drop be called the equal of the sea? The ant never reaches the elephant — its pride is false. The child boasts to his own mother about her family, the simpleton. The One who shaped you and graced you, giving you body and life — leaving Him at the root, deceiver, you will go to Death's city.
5 · The Deceiver's Company Is False and Painful
kaihā disai ujalā mas andar chitai | hariā til būāṛ jiu phal kamm na kitai | jehī kalī kaner dī man tan duhu bhitai | peñjhū disan raṅgule marīai agalitai | kharī suālio vesuā jīa bajhā itai | khoṭī saṅgat mīṇiā dukh dendī mitai |5|
Bronze looks bright, and inside its heart is soot. Like the green barren sesame — its fruit is of no use at all. Like the oleander bud — in mind and body it is two kinds at once. The penjhu fruits look colourful, and eating them a man dies before his time. The prostitute is very lovely, and life is bound up by her. False is the company of the deceivers — it gives pain to a friend.
6 · The Cut-Nose Path Leads to Hell
badhik nād suṇāikai jiu mirag viṇāhai | jhīvar kuṇḍī mās lāi jiu machhī phāhai | kaval dikhālai muhu khiṛāi bhavarai vesāhai | dīpak jot pataṅg no durajan jiu dāhai | kālabūt hoi hasatanī maigal omāhai | tiu nakaṭ panth hai mīṇiā mil narak nibāhai |6|
As the hunter, sounding his lure, destroys the deer; as the fisherman, baiting the hook, snares the fish; as the lotus shows its open smiling face and betrays the trusting bee; as the lamp's flame, like a wicked one, burns the moth; as a straw decoy-elephant lures the wild tusker into the pit. So is the cut-nose path of the deceivers — meet it, and you end in hell.
7 · The Deceiver's Company Brings Despair
har chandaurī dekh kai karade bharavāsā | thal vich tapan bhaṭhīā kiu lahai piāsā | suhaṇe rāj kamāīai kar bhog bilāsā | chhāiā birakh na rahai thir pujai kiu āsā | bājīgar dī kheḍ jiu sabh kūṛ tamāsā | ralai ju saṅgat mīṇiā uṭh chalai nirāsā |7|
Seeing a mirage city, they put their trust in it. In the desert are the burning mirage-fires — how shall thirst be quenched there? In a dream a man rules a kingdom, and does his pleasures and delights. The tree's shade never stays still — how shall that hope be fulfilled? Like a juggler's show, it is all a false spectacle. Whoever joins the company of the deceivers gets up and goes away in despair.
8 · The Deceivers Are Cursed Masters
koil kāun ralāīan kiu hovan ikai | tiu nindak jag jāṇīan bol bolaṇ phikai | bagule hans barābarī kiu mikan mikai | tiu bemukh chuṇ kaḍhīan muh kāle ṭikai | kiā nīsāṇī mīṇiā khoṭ sālī sikai | sir sir pāhaṇī mārīan oi pīr phiṭikai |8|
Mix cuckoo and crow — how shall they be one? So the gossips are known in the world, by their flat, tasteless speech. How shall heron and swan be matched as equals? So the faithless are picked out and cast off, marked with black faces. What is the mark of the deceivers? — a base coin at the mint that will not pass. Struck on each head with a shoe — those masters are cursed.
9 · The Merit-less Calling Themselves Guru
rātī nīṅgar khelade sabh hoi ikaṭhe | rājā parajā hovade kar sāṅg upaṭhe | ik lasakar lai dhāvade ik phirade naṭhe | ṭhīkarīān hāle bharan ui khare asaṭhe | khin vich kheḍ ujāṛide ghar ghar nūn traṭhe | viṇ guṇ gurū sadāide oi khoṭe maṭhe |9|
At night the children play, all gathered together. They become king and subject, and make an upside-down show of it. Some rush out with an army, and some run about. They pay their dues in broken potsherds, sitting proud. And in a moment they break up the game and scatter to house after house. So, with no goodness in them, they call themselves guru — those base and dull ones.
10 · Their Disciples Go in Despair
uchā lammā jhaṇṭulā vich bāg disandā | moṭā muḍh patāl jaṛ bahu garab karandā | pat supatar sohaṇe visathār baṇandā | phul rate phal bakabake hoi aphal phalandā | sāvā totā chuhachuhā tis dekh bhulandā | pichho de pachhutāidā ohu phal na lahandā |10|
High, tall and bushy, it shows itself in the garden — a thick trunk rooted deep, full of pride; its leaves are lovely and spread wide; its flowers red, its fruit tasteless, fruiting fruitlessly. The green parrot, chirping, sees it and is fooled; and afterwards it is sorry — for that fruit it never gets.
11 · The Merit-less Guru is a Eunuch
pahine pañje kapaṛe purasāvān ves | muchhā dāṛhī sohaṇī bahu durabal ves | sai hathiārī sūramā pañchīn paraves | māhar daṛ dībāṇ vich jāṇai sabh des | purakh na gaṇ purakhat viṇ kāmaṇ ki kares | viṇ guṇ gurū sadāide kauṇ karai ades |11|
He wears the five garments, a manly dress; his moustache and beard are fine, and his figure very feeble. A warrior of a hundred arms, walking in among the elders; a master at the war-council, known through the whole land. But do not count him a man, having no manhood — what shall the woman do with him? With no goodness in them they call themselves guru — and who shall pay them homage?
12 · The Beloved is Met by Service
galī je sahu pāīai totā kiu phāsai | milai nā bahut siāṇapai kāu gūnhu girāsai | jorāvarī nā jipaī sīh sahā viṇāsai | gīt kavit na bhijaī bhaṭ bhekh udāsai | joban rūp nā mohīai raṅg kusumbh durāsai | viṇ sevā dohāgaṇī pir milai na hāsai |12|
If the Husband were won by mere words, why would the parrot be caught by its own talk? He is not met by much cleverness — the crow, for all its cunning, eats filth. He is not won by force — the lion, for all its might, destroys the hare. He is not moved by song and verse — the bards in their costumes are only hermits. He is not charmed by youth and beauty — the safflower's colour is short-lived. Without service, the bride is forsaken — the Husband is not met by a laugh.
13 · One's Own Means are Fruitless
sir talavāiān pāīai chamagidaṛ jūhe | maṛī masāṇī je milai vich khuḍān chūhe | mile na vaḍī ārajā bisīar vihu lūhe | hoi kuchīl varatīai khar sūr bhasūhe | kand mūl chit lāīai aīaṛ vaṇ dhūhe | viṇ gur mukat nā hovaī jiu ghar viṇ būhe |13|
If freedom came by hanging head-down, the bat would find it in the grove. If it came by living in graveyards, the mice in their holes would have it. It does not come from long life — the serpent lives long, and still burns in its own poison. If it came from being filthy, the donkey and the pig wallow in dirt. If it came from fixing the mind on roots and tubers, the wild goats graze the woods. Without the Guru there is no freedom — like a house with no door.
14 · No Liberation by Austerity or Garb
milai ji tīrath nātiān ḍaḍān jal vāsī | vāl vadhāiān pāīai baṛ jaṭān palāsī | naṅge rahiān je milai vaṇ mirag udāsī | bhasam lāi je pāīai khar kheh nivāsī | je pāīai chup kītiān pasūān jaṛ hāsī | viṇ gur mukat na hovaī gur milai khalāsī |14|
If it came by bathing at holy places, the frogs live in the water. If it came by growing long hair, the banyan has its matted locks and roots. If it came by staying naked, the forest deer roam free. If it came by smearing on ash, the donkey lives in the dust. If it came by keeping silence, then the mute beasts — what a joke. Without the Guru there is no freedom; and meeting the Guru is release.
15 · The Same
jaṛīn būṭīn je jīvīai kiu marai dhanantar | tant mant bājīgarān oi bhavah disantar | rukhīn birakhīn pāīai kāsaṭ baisantar | milai na vīrārādh kar ṭhag chor na antar | milai na rātī jāgiān aparādh bhavantar | viṇ gur mukat na hovaī guramukh amarantar |15|
If a man lived on herbs and simples, why would the doctor die? The jugglers' magic and spells — they only wander from land to land. If it were in tree and plant, wood holds fire, and is not saved by it. It does not come by magic rites — there is no difference between a cheat and a thief. It does not come by staying up at night — the thief too wanders by night. Without the Guru there is no freedom; the Gurmukh finds the deathless state.
16 · From the Incapable, Liberation is Impossible
ghaṇṭ ghaṛāiā chūhiān gal bilī pāīai | matā matāiā makhīān ghia andar nāīai | sūtak lahai na kīṛiān kiu jhath laṅghāīai | sāvaṇ rahiṇ bhambīrīān je pār vasāīai | kūñjaṛīān vaisākh vich jiu jūh parāīai | viṇ gur mukat na hovaī phir āīai jāīai |16|
The mice held a council to hang a bell on the cat's neck, and not one of them could. The flies resolved to bathe in the butter, and drowned. The insects' impurity never lifts — how shall they pass the time? The whirligig beetles stay only in the rainy month — settle them across, and they die. The cranes in early summer are in a foreign pasture. Without the Guru there is no freedom — a man comes and goes again.
17 · Falsehood's Cover is Falsehood
je khuthī biṇḍā bahai kiu hoi bajāj | kute de gal vāsaṇī na sarāphī sāj | ratanamaṇī gal bāndarai jauharī nah kāj | gadahun chandan ladīai nahn gāndhī gāj | je makhī muh makaṛī kiu hovai bāj | sach sachāvān kāṇḍhīai kūṛ kūṛā pāj |17|
If a grasshopper sits in the cloth shop, does it become a draper? A cloth on a dog's neck does not make it a money-changer's trade. A jewel on a monkey's neck is no work of the jeweller's. Load sandal on a donkey — it is no perfumer's stock. If a fly is in a spider's mouth, how does it become a hawk? Truth is proclaimed true; and falsehood's cover is only falsehood.
18 · The Have-Not Who Preens is a Fool
aṅaṇ put gavāṇḍhaṇī kūṛāvā māṇā | pālī chauṇā chāradā ghar vit na jāṇā | badarā sir vegārīai niradhan hairāṇā | jiu kar rākhā khet vich nāhī kirasāṇā | par ghar jāṇai āpaṇā mūrakh mihamāṇā | aṇahodā āp gaṇāidā ohu vaḍā ajāṇā |18|
The neighbour woman's son in the courtyard — a false pride to claim him. The herdsman grazes the herd, and knows no wealth of his own house. A sack of coin on the labourer's head — the poor man is astonished, for it is not his. Like the watchman in the field, and not the farmer, for it is not his crop. The fool-guest thinks another man's house his own. The have-not who counts himself great is a great ignorant man.
19 · The Same

The ant's strength does not prop up the elephant's load. Wringing its hands, how shall the fly become a slayer of lions? The mosquito's sting never reaches the venom of the terrible serpent. Paint a hundred thousand ants on a wall — how do they become real game for a hunt? Though the pasture be cramped and hemmed in, a man is no king and no lord. The have-not who counts himself great is a great boor.
20 · The Guru's Test is Truth

A son is born in the inner room, and the world outside comes to know it. Wealth buried in the earth — and the one whose fortune it is finds it. Travellers proclaim Indra's rain when it falls. Everyone bows the head when the moon rises. Gorakh has a patched quilt on his neck, and is still called Lord of the world. He is called Guru by the Guru's love — and in Truth, Truth is known.

I am an offender and a sinner; I am one who turned away, an evil man. A thief, an adulterer, a gambler, I eye other people's houses. A gossip, a wicked man, an eater of the forbidden, a cheat cheating the country. Lust, anger, wine, greed, clinging and pride I do. A betrayer of trust, ungrateful — I keep faith with nobody. Remember this, O singers who follow the Master: the True Guru is the Forgiver.
