Chapter 37

Var 37 · The Priceless Birth

The wonder of creation and the rare human body ferried across the ocean; the child's helplessness and the mother's boundless sacrifice against the ungrateful son; the One fire in all wood, the One milk in every cow — and, most beloved, Bhai Gurdas's own humility: there is none worse than me, the dog at the Guru's door.

1 · The Creator's Play

ik kavāu pasāu kar oaṅkār akār banāiā | ambar dharat vichhoṛ kai viṇ thammā ākās rahāiā | jal vich dharatī rakhīan dharatī andar nīr dharāiā | kāṭhai andar ag dhar agī hondī suphal phalāiā | pauṇ pāṇī baisantaro tinne vairī mel milāiā | rājas sātak tāmaso brahamā bisan mahes upāiā | choj viḍāṇ chalit varatāiā |1|

With one Word's expanse He made Onkar and all the forms. Parting sky and earth, He held the sky up without pillars. He set the earth inside the water, and the water inside the earth. Putting fire in the wood, out of that fire He brought good fruit. Air, water and fire — the three enemies He joined together. The restless, the calm and the dark qualities — Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh He raised. A wonderful play, a marvel, He set going.

2 · The Divine Power

siv sakatī dā rūp kar sūraj chand charāg balāiā | rātī tāre chamakade ghar ghar dīpak jot jagāiā | sūraj ekaṅkār dihu tāre dīpak rūp lukāiā | lakh darīāu kavāu vich tol atol na tol tulāiā | oaṅkār akār jis paravadagār apār alāiā | abagat gat at agam hai akath kathā nah alakh lakhāiā | suṇ suṇ ākhaṇ ākh suṇāiā |2|

Making the form of Shiva and his power, He lit the lamps of sun and moon. At night the stars twinkle; and in house after house He kindled the lamp's flame. By day the sun is the One-Creator; and the stars and the lamps hide their forms in its light. A hundred thousand rivers in one Word — past weighing, weighed by no scale. He whose form is Onkar is called the boundless Cherisher. His state is hidden and past reaching, the untold story — the unseen is not seen. Hearing and hearing, we tell only what we have heard.

3 · The Wonder of Creation

khāṇī bāṇī chār jug jal thal taruvar parabat sāje | tinn loa chaudah bhavaṇ kar ikīh brahamaṇḍ nivāje | chāre kuṇḍā dīp sat nau khaṇḍ dah dis vajaṇ vāje | ikas ikas khāṇ vich ikīh ikīh lakh upāje | ikat ikat jūn vich jīa jant aṇagaṇat birāje | rūp anūp sarūp kar raṅg biraṅg taraṅg agāje | pauṇ pāṇī ghar nau daravāje |3|

The four ways of being born, the four kinds of speech, the four ages; water, land, tree and mountain He made. The three worlds and the fourteen realms He graced with twenty-one universes. The four quarters, the seven islands, the nine regions — the music sounds in ten directions. In each and every source He raised more than two million kinds. In each and every kind live creatures past counting. Making matchless forms and shapes, colours and hues, waves surging. Air and water, in the house of the nine doors.

4 · The Wonder of the Senses

kālā dhaulā rataṛā nīlā pīlā hariā sāje | ras kas kar visamād sād jībhahun jāp na khāj akhāje | miṭhā kauṛā khaṭ turas phikā sāu salūṇā chhāje | gandh sugandh aves kar choā chandan kesar kāje | med kathūrī pān phul ambar chūr kapūr andāje | rāg nād sambād bahu chaudah vidiā anahad gāje | lakh darīāu karoṛ jahāje |4|

Black, white, red, blue, yellow and green He made. Sweet and sour, the wonderful tastes — the tongue tells what is fit to eat and what is not. Sweet, bitter, sour, sharp, flat and salt — the flavours spread out. Scents and fragrances He set — distilled sandal and saffron do their work. Musk, betel, flower and amber, ground camphor, in measure. Melody, tune, discourse, and the fourteen sciences sound the unplayed strain. A hundred thousand rivers, and millions of ships.

5 · The Human Body, Ferried Across

sat samund athāh kar ratan padārath bhare bhaṇḍārā | mahīal khetī aukhadhī chhādan bhojan bahu bisathārā | taruvar chhāiā phul phal sākhā pat mūl bahu bhārā | parabat andar asaṭadhāt lāl javāhar pāras pārā | chaurāsī lakh jon vich mil mil vichhuṛe vaḍ paravārā | jammaṇ jīvaṇ maraṇ vich bhavajal pūr bharāi hajārā | māṇas dehī pār utārā |5|

Making seven seas past sounding, storehouses filled with jewels and goods; on the earth the crops and herbs, clothing and food in wide array; the tree's shade, flower and fruit, branch, leaf and root, a heavy load; in the mountains the eight metals, ruby, jewel, gold-making stone and quicksilver; in the eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life, great families meet and part; in birth, life and death, thousands are ferried through the ocean of fear. It is by the human body that one lands on the far shore.

6 · Human Birth, and Forgetting

māṇas janam dulambh hai chhiṇ bhaṅgar chhal dehī chhārā | pāṇī dā kar pūtarā uḍai na pauṇ khule nau duārā | agan kuṇḍ vich rakhīan narak ghor mahn udar majhārā | karai uradh tap garabh vich chasā na visarai sirajaṇahārā | dasī mahīnī jammiān simaraṇ karī kare nisatārā | jammado māiā mohiā nadar na āvai rakhaṇahārā | sāhon vichhuṛiā vaṇajārā |6|

A human birth is rare, a flash and gone, a deceiving body of ash. A puppet of water, and the breath does not fly out through the nine open doors. Kept in the fire-pit, in the dread hell of the belly's middle; doing his upside-down penance in the womb, not forgetting the Creator for an instant. Born after ten months, if he remembered he could be set free — but once born, maya casts her spell, and the Protector never comes into sight. The trader is parted from his Banker.

7 · The Net of the World's Glitter

rovai ratan gavāi kai māiā mohu aner gubārā | ohu rovai dukh āpaṇā has has gāvai sabh paravārā | sabhanān man vādhāīān ruṇ jhuñjhanaṛā ruṇ jhuṇakārā | nānak dādak sohale den asīsān bāl piārā | chukhahun bindak bind kar bindahun kītā parabat bhārā | sat santokh daiā dharam arath sugarath visār visārā | kām karodh virodh vich lobh mohu dhroh ahaṅkārā | mahān jāl phāthā vechārā |7|

He weeps, having lost the jewel — the clinging of maya, thick darkness. He weeps his own sorrow, while the whole family laughs and sings. Congratulations in every mind, and the tinkling music of joy. On father's and mother's side the wedding songs, and blessings on the dear child. Out of a speck he makes a mite, and out of a mite a mountain-load. Truth, contentment, pity, right living and able purpose — he forgets and forgets. In lust, anger and strife, in greed, clinging, deceit and pride — the poor thing is caught in the great net.

8 · The Child's Unawareness

hoi suchet achet iv akhīn hondī annhā hoā | vairī mit na jāṇadā ḍāiṇ māu subhāu samoā | bolā kannī hondaī jas apajas mohu dhohu nā soā | guṅgā jībhai hundīai dudh vich vis ghol muh choā | vihu ammrit samasar pīai maraṇ jīvan ās trās na ḍhoā | sarap agan val hath pāi karai manorath pakaṛ khaloā | samajhai nāhī ṭibā ṭoā |8|

Being conscious, he is somehow unconscious — he has eyes and is blind. He does not know an enemy from a friend — the world's witch-nature has soaked into him. Deaf, though he has ears — he hears no praise, no blame, no love and no deceit. Mute, though he has a tongue — poison dissolved in milk is poured into his mouth. He drinks poison and nectar alike — with no thought of death or life, hope or fear. He puts his hand to the snake and the leaping fire, and grasps them, and stands there to get his wish. He cannot tell a mound from a hollow.

9 · The Child's Helplessness

lūlā pairī hodaī ṭaṅgān mār na uṭh khaloā | hatho hath nachāīai āsā bandhī hār paroā | udam ukat na āvaī deh bideh na navān niroā | hagaṇ mūtaṇ chhaḍaṇā rog sog vich dukhīā roā | ghuṭī pīai na khusī hoh sapahun rakhiaṛā aṇakhoā | guṇ avaguṇ na vichāradā na upakār vikār aloā | samasar tis hathīār sañjoā |9|

Lame, though he has feet — he cannot get up and stand, and kicks his legs. He is danced from hand to hand, and hope strings a garland. No effort and no wit come to him — in a body and yet bodiless, never quite whole. Passing his stool and his water, in sickness and grief the poor thing weeps. He drinks the potion, and is still not pleased — protected only by somebody else from the snake. He weighs no goodness and no fault, and sees neither a good deed nor a bad. Weapon and armour are all the same to him.

10 · The Mother's Kindness

māt pitā mil nimmiā āsāvantī udar majhāre | ras kas khāi nilaj hoi chhahu chhahu dharaṇ dharai pag dhāre | peṭ vich das māh rakh pīṛā khāi jaṇai put piāre | jaṇ kai pālai kasaṭ kar khān pān vich sañjam sāre | guṛhatī dei piāl dudh ghuṭī vaṭī dei nihāre | chhādan bhojan pokhiā jhaṇḍan maṅgan paṛhan chitāre | pāndhe pās bahāliā khaṭ luṭāi hoi suchiāre | ariṇat hoe bhār utāre |10|

Mother and father met and conceived him; and she, full of hope, carried him in her belly. Eating what she liked, she sets her feet down gingerly, carefully on the ground. Keeping him ten months in her belly and bearing the pain, she bears the dear son. Having borne him, she rears him with hardship, keeping restraint in her own eating and drinking. She gives him the first drop, the cup of milk, gazing at him as she gives it. Clothing and feeding, she nourishes him; she thinks about his combing and his schooling. She seats him with the teacher, spending her earnings to make him fine. Free of the debt, she has laid down her burden.

11 · The Son's Unkindness

mātā pitā anand vich putai dī kuṛamāī hoī | rahasī aṅg na māvaī gāvai sohilaṛe sukh hoī | vigasī putr viāhiai ghoṛī lāvān gāv bhaloī | sukhān sukhai māvaṛī put nūnh dā mel aloī | nuhu nit kant kumant dei vihare hovan sas vigoī | lakh upakār visār kai put kuput chakī uṭh jhoī | hovai saravaṇ viralā koī |11|

Mother and father, in bliss, at the betrothal of their son. She cannot be contained for joy, singing the songs of happiness. Delighted at the son's wedding, she sings the wedding songs sweetly. The mother makes her vows, seeing son and daughter-in-law meet. The daughter-in-law gives her husband bad advice every day; they grow estranged, and the mother-in-law is undone. Forgetting a hundred thousand kindnesses, the bad son sets his mother to grind at the mill. Rare is a Sarvan, the devoted son.

12 · Forgetting Parents is Sin

kāmaṇ kāmaṇiārīai kīto kāmaṇ kant piāre | jamme sāīn visāriā vīvāhiā mān pio visāre | sukhān sukh vivāhiā sauṇ sañjog vichār vichāre | put nūhain dā mel vekh aṅg na māvan mān piu vāre | nunhu nit mant kumant dei mān pio chhaḍ vaḍe hatiāre | vakh hovai put rann lai mān piu de upakār visāre | lokāchār hui vaḍe kuchāre |12|

O charming woman, you have cast your spell on the dear husband. Born, he forgot the Lord; married, he forgot his mother and father. Making his vows, he was wed, weighing omen and match. Seeing son and daughter-in-law meet, mother and father could not be contained for joy. The daughter-in-law gives daily bad advice — leaving mother and father, they become great murderers. The son splits off, taking his wife, forgetting the kindness of mother and father. In worldly custom they grow great in bad conduct.

13 · The Parent-Forsaker's Rites are Fruitless

mān piu parahar suṇai ved bhed na jāṇai kathā kahāṇī | mān piu parahar karai tap vaṇakhaṇḍ bhulā phirai bibāṇī | mān piu parahar karai pūj devī dev na sev kamāṇī | mān piu parahar nhāvaṇā aṭhasaṭh tīrath ghummaṇ vāṇī | mān piu parahar karai dān beīmān agiān parāṇī | mān piu parahar varat kar mar mar jammai bharam bhulāṇī | gur paramesar sār na jāṇī |13|

Leaving his mother and father, he hears the Veda — and knows neither the secret, nor the story, nor the telling. Leaving his mother and father, he does penance — lost in the forest, wandering the waste. Leaving his mother and father, he worships — and earns the service of no god and no goddess. Leaving his mother and father, he bathes — whirling round all sixty-eight holy places. Leaving his mother and father, he gives charity — a faithless, ignorant creature. Leaving his mother and father, he fasts — dying and dying, he is born again, lost in doubt. He does not know the heart of it: the Guru is God.

14 · Cherish the Kind Creator

kādar manahun visāriā kudarat andar kādar disai | jīu piṇḍ de sājiā sās mās de jisai kisai | akhīn muhun nak kann dei hath pair sabh dāt su tisai | akhīn dekhai rūp raṅg sabad surat muh kann sarisai | nak vās hathīn kirat pairī chalaṇ pal pal khisai | vāl dand mūnh rom rom sās girās samāl salisai | sādī labai sāhibo tis tūn sammal sauvain hisai | lūṇ pāi kar āṭai misai |14|

He forgot the Creator out of his mind — and yet the Creator is seen inside the creation. He shaped the life and the body, giving breath and flesh to each and all. The eyes, the mouth, the nose and the ears He gave; hands and feet — every gift is His. With the eyes He sees form and colour; awareness of the Word joins the mouth and the ears. The nose to smell, the hands to work, the feet to walk — and every moment slipping away. Hair, teeth, mouth, every pore — with breath and mouthful He tends and cares. You take the sweetness that is the Master's gift — so remember the One whose even the hundredth part is. As salt is put into the flour and kneaded, so He is mixed into everything.

15 · As the Waking Mind, So the Dream

dehī vich na jāpaī nīnd bhukh teh kithai vasai | hasaṇ rovaṇ gāvaṇā chhik ḍikār khaṅghūraṇ dasai | ālak te aṅgavāṛīān hiḍakī khurakaṇ paras parasai | ubhe sāh ubāsīān chuṭakārī tāṛī suṇ kisai | āsā manasā harakh sog jog bhog dukh suṇ na vigasai | jāgadiān lakh chitavaṇī sutā suhaṇe andar dhasai | sutā hī baraṛānvadā kirat virat vich jas apajasai | tisanā andar ghaṇā tarasai |15|

It is not known inside the body — where do sleep, hunger and thirst live? Laughing, weeping, singing, sneezing, belching, coughing — they tell of a hidden order. Yawning and stretching, hiccups, itching, touch on touch; deep sighs and gapings, snapping fingers, hearing a clap — from whom? Hope and craving, joy and sorrow, yoga, enjoyment, pain — hearing of them, a man does not blossom. Awake, a hundred thousand thoughts; asleep, he sinks into a dream. Even asleep he mutters, in his work praise and bad name. Inside his own thirst he pines away.

16 · Not Mended Even by Kindness

guramat duramat varataṇā sādh asādh saṅgat vich vasai | tinn ves jamavār vich hoi sañjog vijog muṇasai | sahas kubāṇ na visarai sirajaṇahār visār vigasai | par nārī par darab hit par nindā parapañch rahasai | nām dān isanān taj kīratan kathā na sādh parasai | kutā chauk chaṛhāīai chakī chaṭaṇ kāraṇ nasai | avaguṇiārā guṇ na sarasai |16|

The Guru's wisdom and bad thinking work away; the holy and the unholy live side by side. In the three costumes of Death's turn, meeting and parting are measured out. He never forgets a thousand ill words — and yet he forgets the Creator, and still blossoms. Loving other men's women, other people's wealth, other people's gossip, he delights in show. Leaving the Name, the giving and the clean living, he never touches kirtan, teaching or the holy. A dog raised at the crossroads still runs off to lick the millstone. The faulty man takes no pleasure in goodness.

17 · The One Pervades the Many

As in the many-coloured plants — root, leaf, fruit and flower in plenty — the one fire is of a single kind, making its home inside them all; matchless and many are the forms, and the lovely-coloured good bamboo — but rising out of the bamboo, the fire burns it to a heap of ash; the varied cows, limb on limb, are called milk-cows; called by name, the herdsman grazes them, 'mine and yours' — and yet they all give one milk and one butter, though the vessels differ, and no fault is seen. Inside your own mind, remember the Painter of it all.

18 · The Created Remembers Not the Creator

The earth and the water have their fragrance; and the flower's scent lives better in it. Meeting the sesame, the flowers make the fallen pure — fragrant perfume-oil out of a lowly seed. Seeing with his eyes, he makes darkness — mind blind, body in the dark of the dark. Through six seasons and twelve months there is one sun — and the owl does not see it. The crane's remembering, the tortoise's meditation, the stone-insect's early food — the One feeds them all. And still the created does not remember the Creator.

19 · The Manmukh is Ever Blind

The owl and the bat do not see, though the daylight shines. They see in the dark night; well spoken to or ill, they stand mute. The manmukhs are blind night and day, empty of awareness, grinding at the mill. Picking out and throwing away the goodness, and holding on to the faults — they string crystals and leave the diamonds. Named 'clear-sighted', they are the blind; drunk on the wine of maya, they weep. In lust, anger and strife they fill all four skirts and wash them endlessly. The stones of sin, once carried, are never shed.

20 · Evil for Good

In the wastes the milkweed grows; and when the rain falls, its milk withers at the mouth. Break its leaf, and milk flows; drink it, and it is deadly poison. Out of the milkweed comes a pod, fruitless — and the milkweed locust eats that fruit. The poison flees from the milkweed's milk — a snake-bitten man, eating milkweed, is healed. Grazing on that milkweed, the goat gives milk, dripping nectar into the mouth. Give the snake milk to drink, and it stands there spewing poison. For good it gives back evil.

21 · The Guru-less Cannot Be Tamed

The butcher slaughters the goat, salts it, and spits the flesh on the skewer. Being slaughtered, it laughs and laughs, and accepts it: 'From eating the milkweed, this state has come.' Those who eat that flesh, with the knife at the throat — what will their state be? By the tongue's misdeed and the teeth's ruin, the mouth is broken and spoiled. Slandering other people's bodies and wealth, he becomes a two-tongued, wandering serpent. He is tamed by hearing the Guru's sacred word — but the guru-less manmukh does not hear it. He walks without looking, and there is a pit ahead.

22 · The Love of Another is a False Throw

āp na vañai sāhurai lokān matīn de samajhāe | chānaṇ ghar vich dīviahun heṭh anner na sakai miṭāe | hath dīvā phaṛ ākhuṛai hui chakachaudhī pair thiṛāe | hath kaṅaṇ lai ārasī aukhā hovai dekh dikhāe | dīvā ikat hath lai ārasī dūjai hath phaṛāe | hunde dīve ārasī ākhur ṭoe pāundā jāe | dūjā bhāu kudāu harāe |22|

He does not go to the true home himself, and still he instructs the people with his advice. The lamp gives light in the house, and cannot drive off the dark right under itself. Holding the lamp in his hand, he stumbles, dazzled, his feet slipping. With a bracelet and a mirror in his hands, he finds it hard to see or to show. A lamp in one hand and a mirror in the other — and with lamp and mirror both, he stumbles into pits as he goes. Loving anything else is a losing throw, and it is beaten.

23 · The Manmukh is Ungrateful

He drowns and dies in the pool of nectar, the false swimmer who cannot cross. Touched by the gold-making stone, a stone does not become gold — the shapeless is not shaped. The serpent does not give up its poison, though it wrap the sandal all eight watches. The conch, though from the sea, is empty — it cries and wails aloud. The owl sees nothing — and yet the sun's light does not hide by hiding. The manmukh is deeply ungrateful, lured by loving other things and by self-interest. He never sets the Creator inside his heart.

24 · The Guru-less is the Worst

mān gabhaṇ jīa jāṇadī put saput hovai sukhadāī | kaputahun dhī chaṅgeraṛī par ghar jāi vasāi na āī | kudhīahun sap sakārathā jāu jaṇendī jaṇ jaṇ khāī | mān ḍāiṇ dhann dhann hai kapaṭī putai khāi aghāī | bāmhaṇ gāī khāi sap phaṛ guramantr pavāi piṛāī | nigure tul na hor ko sirajaṇahārai siraṭh upāī | mātā pitā na gur saraṇāī |24|

The pregnant mother wishes her child to be a good son, a giver of joy. Better than a bad son is a good daughter, who goes to another house and settles there well. Better than a bad daughter is even the snake — the mother who bears it, it eats, brood by brood. Blessed, blessed is even the witch-mother who, deceitful, eats her son to the full. The Brahmin who eats the cow in sin, and the snake seized by the Guru's word and made to dance — all these have some remedy. But there is nothing like the guru-less, in all the creation the Creator made. He has neither mother, nor father, nor the Guru's shelter.

25 · The Sight of the Guru-less is Bad

nigure lakh na tul tis nigure satigur saraṇ na āe | jo gur gopai āpaṇā tis ḍiṭhe nigure saramāe | sīh sauhān jāṇā bhalā nā tis bemukh sauhān jāe | satigur te jo muhu phirai tis muh lagaṇ vaḍī balāe | jo tis mārai dharam hai mār na haṅghai āp haṭāe | suām dhohī akritaghaṇ bāmaṇ gaū visāh marāe | bemukh lūan na tul tulāe |25|

A hundred thousand sins do not equal the guru-less — the guru-less man who never came to the True Guru's shelter. The one who hides his own Guru — seeing him, even the guru-less are ashamed. Better to go before a lion than to face that faithless one. The one who turns his face from the True Guru — to meet his face is a great calamity. Whoever strikes him does what is right — and yet you cannot strike him; you turn away in disgust. The master-betrayer, the ungrateful, the treacherous killer of Brahmin and cow — the faithless one does not weigh even as much as a hair.

26 · The Gambler Loses His Birth

mānas deh dulambh hai jugah jugantar āvai vārī | utam janam dulambh hai ik vākī koṛamā vīchārī | deh arog dulambh hai bhāgaṭh māt pitā hitakārī | sādhū saṅg dulambh hai guramukh sukhaphal bhagat piārī | phāthā māiā mahān jāl pañj dūt jamakāl su bhārī | jiu kar sahā vahīr vich par hath pāsā pauchhak sārī | dūjai bhāi kudāiaṛ jam jandār sār sir mārī | āvai jāe bhavāīai bhavajal andar hoi khuārī | hārai janam amol juārī |26|

The human body is rare; age upon age the turn comes round. A high birth is rare — with one voice the whole family thought it over. A healthy body is rare, and a fortunate, loving mother and father. The holy company is rare — the Gurmukh's fruit of joy, beloved devotion. Caught in the great net of maya, the five messengers and Death heavy on him; like a hare in the hunt's caravan, the dice and the pieces in another's hand. Loving anything else, the false throw — Death's iron mace on his head. He comes and goes, spun about, ruined in the ocean of fear. The gambler loses the priceless birth.

27 · Like a Board Game, the Gurmukhs Win

This world is a board game — the coming and going of the ocean of fear. The Gurmukh's pair of pieces, in the holy company, the perfect True Guru ferries across. Whoever joins the true throw reaches home — by the Guru's grace, the five vices are put off. The Gurmukh's nature is natural ease — he thinks ill of nobody from himself. Awareness in the Word, watchful, the Gurmukh walks the path, setting his foot down. In folk story, in Veda and in the Guru's knowledge, in love and devotion, the Guru's Sikh is dear. He goes and lives in his own home, at the Guru's door.

28 · The Blind Guide

vāns sugandh na hovaī charaṇodak bāvan bohāe | kachahun kañchan nā thīai kachahun kañchan pāras lāe | nihaphal simmul jāṇīai aphal saphal kar sabh phal pāe | kāun na hovan ujale kālī hūn dhaule sir āe | kāg vans hui paramahans niramolak motī chuṇ khāe | pasū parotahun dev kar sādhasaṅgat gur sabad kamāe | tis gur sār na jātīā duramat dūje bhāi lubhāe | annhā āgū sāth muhāe |28|

The bamboo takes no fragrance, though the water from the Guru's feet makes sandalwood fragrant. Glass never becomes gold, though the gold-making stone touch it into gold. Know the silk-cotton fruitless; the fruitful tree bears every fruit, and it does not. Crows never become white, though the black turn grey on the head. A crow-born creature becomes a highest swan in the sangat, picking priceless pearls to eat. Out of a beast He makes gods — living the Guru's Word in the holy company. But he who does not know that Guru's worth, lured by bad thinking and by loving something else — a blind guide, he robs the caravan.

29 · Humility, the Highest Teaching

There is no ungrateful man like me, nor has been, nor ever will be. There is no eater of the forbidden like me, and nobody else so full of faults. There is no gossip like me — slandering the Guru is a crushing weight on the head. There is no faithless man like me — turning from the True Guru is a murderer's deed. There is no wicked man like me — doing enmity and harm to the one who has no enmity. There is nobody so treacherous as me — a heron's trance, feeding on fish. The crushing smear never lifts, the body never pleased, hard to soften. There is no two-faced man like me — leaving the Guru's wisdom and loving bad thinking. I am called a disciple, and I never think on the Word.

30 · The Same

The faithless turn faithless — I have seen faces as faithless as my own. Crushing sins on crushing sins — I make an enemy of the one who has no enmity. Reviling and reviling the faithless — knowing myself worse, I revile even them. The heavenly record-keeper cannot write it — the letters would fill the seven seas. Writing letter upon scroll, a hundred thousand of them, each one telling my faults worse than the last. Making disguises, aping, playing the jester — and the whole assembly is embarrassed. There is nobody worse than me in all creation.

31 · The Dog at the Guru's Door

The dog at Laila's court — Majnun, seeing it, was carried away. He falls at the dog's feet — and the people laugh and laugh, astonished. The singer of singers, taking the name of a wilderness-disciple; the dog is called a bard, a lowly dog among dogs. The Guru's Sikhs are lovers of the Word — and even the pup of the dog at that door is dear to me. Biting and licking like dogs, they have no clinging and no deceit; cursed is any other life. To the faulty they do good — I give myself to the Gurmukhs, the holy company. The Lifter of the fallen — such is His nature, they say.
