1 · The One — the True Guru

The True Guru, the true emperor, has settled the land of Truth in the sangat. Taking the Guru's instruction and becoming a Gursikh, a person loses himself and never counts himself. The Gursikh's whole discipline is to practise, to perfect it, and so to be called a holy man. Giving the teaching to all four castes, he keeps them free in the middle of maya. Everything is smaller than Truth; he makes the True Name, the Guru's sacred word, firm. All are under the Command, and whoever accepts the Command merges into Truth. Mind in the Word shows him the One no eye can see.
2 · The Count of Two

Mastering Shiva and his power, he tames sun and moon, day and night. Mastering pleasure and pain, joy and grief, he crosses past hell and heaven, good deeds and bad. Birth and death, life and freedom, good and bad, friend and enemy he lays low. Winning both kingship and yoga and holding them in check, he masters meeting and parting alike. Bringing sleep and hunger under his rule, and conquering hope and craving, he comes home. Mastering praise and slander, he wins over Hindu and Muslim, all alike. Falling at the feet, he is called the dust of the feet.
3 · The Count of Three

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the three worlds, and the Vedas' talk of goodness and knowledge — he crosses past them all. Past, future and present, beginning, middle and end, he wins and moves beyond. Gathering thought, word and deed into one, he conquers birth, death and life. Mastering the three burning troubles, he lays low the heavens, the earth and the world below. Mastering high, middle and low, he wins over childhood, youth and old age. Crossing the three inner channels of the breath, past the knot where they meet, he bathes at that meeting-place within. The Gurmukh, single-minded, meditates on the One.
4 · The Count of Four

Mastering the four ways of being born — from the egg, from the womb, from sweat, from the seed — and the four kinds of speech; the four quarters, the four ages, the four castes, the four Vedas; conquering duty, wealth, pleasure and freedom, and the three qualities of nature along with the fourth, the state above them all; crossing past the four Sanak sages and the four stages of life, he brings all four under his rule. As in a board game the pieces are moved and paired so that none can be struck; in many colours, like the sweetness of the betel leaf, and yet one colour is his mark — the Gurmukh, in the sangat, is past all wanting.
5 · The Count of Five

Crossing air, water, fire, earth and sky, and passing beyond lust, anger, greed, clinging and pride; taking truth, contentment, mercy, right living and the holy book as the five that are accepted; crossing the four yogic seals of tongue, earth, speech and stillness into the state beyond words; the Lord of the five is the Highest One, and the five sounds that no one plays are His thundering banner. The Gurmukh, master of the self made of five elements, joined to the sangat, is made lovely — in calm meditation, with no more coming and going.
6 · The Count of Six

Doing his discipline through the six seasons, he masters the six schools of philosophy by the Guru's wisdom. He masters the six tastes on the tongue, and the melodies and their companion melodies through loving devotion. The six long-lived ones, the six who kept celibate, the six world-rulers he masters in their own ways. Conquering the six old law-books and the six daily rites, his attention and his dance are fixed on the Guru of gurus. Mastering the six practices, the six times six, the thirty-six ways of breathing — in the sangat, his mind held in the Guru's Word.
7 · The Count of Seven

Crossing the seven seas and the seven continents, one lamp is lit. Making seven threads into one thread, he leaps past the seven holy cities. Conquering the seven faithful wives, the seven great sages and the seven immortals, he stands unmoving and does not fall. Mastering the seven boundaries, he is fruitful and fulfilled in the seven fields. Bringing the seven skies and the seven worlds below under his rule, he walks above them all. Crossing the seven streams, he tramples down the army of Bhairav and the guardian spirits. The seven stars, the seven days, the seven faithful brides — he masters them and does not waver. The Gurmukh stands firm inside the sangat.
8 · The Count of Eight

Mastering the eight miracle powers, the seeker ripens his meditation. Mastering the eight poison-serpent clans, he finds that even Shesh, the great serpent, for all his remembering, cannot find His worth. As one large weight is made up of eight smaller ones, so the whole reckoning holds together. As the spinning-wheel has eight spokes and yet holds to one thread in love, so through the eight watches of the day he keeps the eightfold yoga, weighing out grain by the tiniest measures. Bringing the restless, many-jointed mind under control, he makes eight different metals into one metal. Great is the greatness of the sangat.
9 · The Count of Nine

He drove and reined in the nine Nath yogis — for he is the master of masters, the helper of the helpless. The nine treasures are under his Command, and the highest treasure, wisdom, is his brother. He does the nine kinds of devotion as devotion, and the Gurmukh fixes his love on loving devotion. In the nine-gated house of the body lives the glory of the perfect True Guru. Mastering the nine regions of the earth, made whole, he passes the nine gates and comes to his own home. In the nine limbs, in the blue beyond blue, mastering the nine clans, he melts into calm ease. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy shows you the One no eye can see.
10 · The Count of Ten

Those who renounce the world take ten names, but without the True Name a name is empty. The ten descents of God took form, and yet did not reveal the Formless One. Among all the pilgrim places and the festivals, on the ten festival days the Guru's day is not found. He does not remember the One with a single mind; without the sangat he runs off in ten directions. Ten kinds of offering and ten great horse-sacrifices, eaten as impurity, are made forbidden. Bringing the ten senses under control, he stops them running loose. Falling at the feet, he makes the world fall at the feet.
11 · The Count of Eleven

Becoming single-minded on the eleventh day, the Gurmukh's fast is faithful love. The eleven Rudras are in the ocean, and not even one moment's shore can be found. Tested eleven times, rubbed on the testing stone, he is assayed and refined. Spreading the eleven virtues, the raw is ripened and the shapeless is given shape. Casting the eleven throws, he ends the losing throw of seeing two. Hearing the eleven rounds, the Sikh takes the Guru's teaching and is called a Gursikh. In the sangat, the Guru's Word is set inside the heart.
12 · The Count of Twelve

Mastering the twelve yogi sects, the Gurmukh laid the broad road. The sun turns through the twelve months and the moon through one; joining the twelve to the sixteen, the sun merges inside the moon. Rubbing out the twelve sect-marks, the Gurmukh raises the Guru's mark, the true sign. Mastering the twelve signs of the zodiac, he is drawn to the true capital city of devotion. Made pure right through, he is weighed out at full weight. Touching the gold-making stone, he makes others into that stone too.
13 · The Count of Thirteen

Past the thirteen fixed rites, the Gurmukh keeps the true, easy discipline. The thirteen gems are worthless; in the Guru's teaching he found the real jewel-wealth. Doing the thirteen rites for the ancestors, a person is lost in delusion. A hundred thousand such rites cannot equal drinking the water that washed a Gursikh's feet. Against a hundred thousand sacrificial offerings, the Gurmukh puts one grain of the sangat's shared food in his mouth. Gladdening his brother Sikhs, the Gurmukh tastes the fruit of joy, the sweetness of love. The Lover of His devotees cannot be fooled, and outwits the one who tries.
14 · Fourteen, Fifteen, Sixteen

Mastering the fourteen sciences, by the Guru's wisdom he tells the unseen, untold story. Crossing the fourteen worlds, he lives in his own home, in the love that wants nothing. Fifteen moon-days make one fortnight — the dark half and the bright half, the two fortnights, are the sign. Mastering the sixteen, the pair is joined, and he knows the Fearless One. Full in all sixteen phases, the sun stands in the moon's house. As a bride puts on all sixteen adornments and enjoys the sweetness of love on her lord's bed — past Shiva and his power stands the seventeenth, the Word.
15 · Eighteen to Thirty-Four

Mastering the eighteen family lines, he reads the eighteen old holy books. Crossing nineteen, twenty and twenty-one, he humbles the twenty-two nobles. Giving away treasures beyond counting, he reaches the twenty-third, the twenty-fourth, the twenty-fifth. Joining the twenty-sixth to the twenty-seventh, he comes to the twenty-eighth and is united. Crossing the twenty-ninth and the thirtieth, and passing the thirty-first, the songs of joy ring out. With the good marks at thirty-two, at thirty-three Dhru is circled round. And at thirty-four he is shown the writing of the One who was never written down.

Past the Vedas and the scriptures, the writing of that Unwritten One cannot be read. His form is matchless, a wonder, and the eye cannot reach the sight of Him. With one Word he spread out the whole expanse; no scale can weigh him, and nothing can hold him. Past all speech and telling — even a mind merged in the Word grows tired. Past thought, word and deed, wisdom and understanding grow tired and gain only a little. He cannot be fooled, cannot be pierced, cannot be measured, and the Lover of His devotees fills the sangat. Great is He, and great is His greatness.

In forest after forest the wild growth spreads, scattered through the wilderness. Choosing and choosing the little plants, the king lays out and adorns his garden. Watering and watering, the trees are raised, tended with care and thought. When the season comes they bear fruit — nectar-fruit, heavy with nectar-sweetness. From the tree itself no taste comes, but into the fruit the taste and the scent are set. The Perfect One is in the world; in the Gurmukh and in the sangat is the Formless One. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy has no bounds and no end.
18 · The Boundless Sky

The sky is seen, and yet how vast it is, no one knows. However high it is said to be, its emptiness cannot be told in words. The birds fly up — the fabled anal and manal birds fly, and bring back no news of where it ends. Its limit is never found, and everyone wanders about amazed. A hundred thousand skies do not reach it — I give myself to the Creator of such power. The Highest One, the True Guru-Being, lives in the sangat, past all wanting. Become like a corpse, become a disciple, and you will know Him.

The Guru's image is the Perfect One, and in every single heart the sun is seen. As the lotus loves the sun, so the Gurmukh understands through loving devotion. The Highest One is the Guru's Word, a fountain raining down, its goodness hidden. As field and tree bear fruit, so the sandal's scent never strays from its own home. Seeing the fruitless and the fruitful with an equal eye, he does not get tangled in clinging, deceit or doubt. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy is the sweetness of love; free while still alive, he draws the milk of devotion. Joining the sangat, he understands in calm ease.
20 · The Word Is the Guru

Know the Word as the Guru, and the Guru as the Word — the Gurmukh becomes a disciple, his mind tuned to that sound. In the sangat, the land of Truth, love and devotion delight, and the meeting happens. Knowledge, meditation and remembrance are the way; like the crane, the tortoise and the line of swans, ever new. From the tree the fruit, and from the fruit the tree — the Guru's Sikh and the Sikh's Guru, and the sweet sacred word of the Guru. Living inside the world's twenty, he becomes the twenty-first, the play beyond words. Bowing to the First Being, and bowing again to the First Being — praise and adoration in the still hour before dawn.
