1 · How Great Is the Creator?
ਇਕੁ ਕਵਾਉ ਪਸਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਪਸਾਰਾ। ਪੰਜਿ ਤਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਕਰਿ ਚਹੁੰ ਖਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਆਖੀਐ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਤੋਲੁ ਅਗਾਸ ਅਕਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਪਵਣੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਲੁ ਵਿਥਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਅਗਨੀ ਭਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਤੁਲੁ ਅਤੋਲੁ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
ik kavāu pasāu kar kudarat andar kīā pasārā | pañj tat paravāṇ kar chahun khāṇī vich sabh varatārā | kevaḍ dharatī ākhīai kevaḍ tol agās akārā | kevaḍ pavaṇ vakhāṇīai kevaḍ pāṇī tol vithārā | kevaḍ aganī bhār hai tul na tul atol bhaṇḍārā | kevaḍ ākhā sirajaṇahārā |1|
With one Word He spread out the whole expanse, and made creation inside His own power. Shaping the five elements, He set them working through the four ways of being born. How great is the earth, and how great the weight and shape of the sky? How great is the air, and how great the measure and spread of water? How great is the weight of fire — past all weighing, a treasure no scale can hold. How great, then, shall I call the Creator?
2 · Godly and Demonic Qualities
ਕੇਵਡੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਹੈ ਦਯਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਤੇ ਅਰਥੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਹੈ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗੁ ਪਰਕਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਿਥਾਰੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਵਾਸੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਗੰਧ ਸੁਗੰਧਿ ਅਚਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਸਾਦ ਨਾਦ ਓਅੰਕਾਰਾ। ਅੰਤੁ ਬਿਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰ ॥੨॥

How great is truth, contentment, mercy, right living, and the thought of what is real? How great is lust and anger, how great greed, clinging and pride? How great is the sight of the eye, how great the shapes and colours and kinds? How great the mind we praise, how great the spread and reach of the Word? How great is scent and the place it lives, how great fragrance and good conduct? How great the sweet tastes, how great the flavour, the sound, the one sound of Onkar? Its end has no end, no shore and no limit.
3 · Beyond All Measure
ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਲਖ ਜੋਨਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਲੁ ਥਲੁ ਮਹੀਅਲੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਸਾਰਾ। ਇਕਸਿ ਇਕਸਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਅਗਣਤ ਅਪਾਰਾ। ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਸਮਾਲਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਕਰੋੜਿ ਸੁਮਾਰਾ। ਰੋਮ ਰੋਮ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਓਅੰਕਾਰ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਵਿਥਾਰਾ। ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਲੇਖ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਦਾ ਲੇਖ ਅਲੇਖ ਉਪਾਵਣੁਹਾਰਾ। ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣੁ ਕਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
chaurāsīh lakh jon vich jal thal mahīal tribhavaṇasārā | ikas ikas jon vich jīa jant agaṇat apārā | sās girās samāladā kar brahamaṇḍ karoṛ sumārā | rom rom vich rakhion oaṅkār akār vithārā | sir sir lekh alekh dā lekh alekh upāvaṇuhārā | kudarat kavaṇ karai vīchārā |3|
Among the eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life — in water, on land, in the sky, through the three worlds — inside each single kind are beings past counting. With every breath and every mouthful He keeps them alive, holding millions of universes in His reckoning. In every pore of His skin He holds the whole spread of creation. On every head is the writing of the One who was never written down; He is the maker of that writing, and beyond all writing Himself. What creature could grasp His power in thought?
4 · Joy and Sorrow
ਕੇਵਡੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਵਿਸਥਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਰੁਤੀ ਮਾਹ ਕਰਿ ਦਿਹ ਰਾਤੀ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ। ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਕੇਵਡੀ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਨੀਦ ਭੁਖ ਅਹਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾਂ ਭਾਉ ਭਉ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ। ਤੋਲੁ ਅਤੋਲੁ ਨ ਤੋਲਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥

How great is the telling of sorrow and joy, how great the spread of gladness and grief? How great is the truth to be spoken, how great the one who does what is false? How great the seasons and the months, the day and the night — a wonder to think about. How great is hope and craving, how great sleep, hunger and food? How great shall I call love and awe, peace, calm ease, good deeds and bad? Past all weighing — no one can weigh Him.
5 · Union and Parting
ਕੇਵਡੁ ਤੋਲੁ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਦਾ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਤੋਲੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਹਸਣੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਰੋਵਣ ਦਾ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਖੁ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਹੈ ਪਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਸਾਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਪੁੰਨ ਪਾਪੁ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਮੋਖੁ ਦੁਆਰਾ। ਕੇਵਡੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਆਖੀਐ ਇਕਦੂੰ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ। ਦਾਨੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ। ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਅਬਿਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਾ ॥੫॥

How great is the measure of meeting, how great the thought of parting? How great is laughter, how great the spread of weeping? How great the side of giving up the world, how great the reach of worldly life? How great, shall I say, is merit and sin, and how great the door of freedom? How great is His power to create — from one, a hundred thousand powers, without end. No gift can set His worth; how great is the Giver who gives? The untold story, hidden, resting on nothing.
6 · The Rare Gift of Human Birth
ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਜੂਨਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੁਲੰਭੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ। ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਮਜਹਬਾਂ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣ ਸਦਾਇਆ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਪੁਰਖ ਵਖਾਣੀਅਨਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਮਾਰਿ ਅਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਇਆ। ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ। ਵੇਦ ਕਤੇਬਾਂ ਵਾਚਦੇ ਇਕੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਚਲਾਇਆ। ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਜੋਗ ਭੋਗ ਬਹੁ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ। ਸਾਧ ਅਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥

Among the eight million four hundred thousand kinds of life, the rare gift of human birth was made. Four castes, four creeds, called Hindu and Muslim. How many men are told of, and how many women beyond all counting? Maya with its three qualities is a play, and Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were made. They read the Vedas and the scriptures — one Master, but two roads set going. In Shiva and his power He made His play, shaping many a sport of yoga and enjoyment. In holy company or in unholy, you harvest what you sowed.
7 · The Ways of the Hindus
ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨਾਂ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ। ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵ ਸਰੇਵਦੇ ਦੇਵ ਸਥਲ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ। ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬ ਅਪਛਰਾਂ ਸੁਰਪਤਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਣ ਛਾਇਆ। ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ਸਿਧ ਨਾਥ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਗਣਾਇਆ। ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਨਈਵੇਦ ਪੁਜਾਇਆ। ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤ੍ਰਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਪਿਤਰ ਕਰਮ ਦੇਵ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ। ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਦਿੜਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
chār varan chhia darasanān sāsatr bed purāṇ suṇāiā | devī dev sarevade dev sathal tīrath bharamāiā | gaṇ gandharab apachharān surapat indr indrāsaṇ chhāiā | jatī satī santokhīān sidh nāth avatār gaṇāiā | jap tap sañjam hom jag varat nem naīved pujāiā | sikhā sūtr mālā tilak pitar karam dev karam kamāiā | punn dān upades diṛāiā |7|
Four castes, six schools of philosophy, and the law-books, the Vedas and the old holy stories recited. They serve goddesses and gods, wandering to shrines and pilgrim places. Hosts of ghosts, heavenly singers and dancers, and Indra the lord on his throne. Those who keep celibate, those who keep chaste, the contented, the masters of miracle powers, the Nath yogis and the divine descents are all counted up. Chanting, penance, self-denial, sacred fires and sacrifices, fasts, vows and offerings. The sacred hair-lock, the thread, the prayer-beads, the forehead mark, and the rites for the ancestors and for the gods. Charity, giving and teaching they make firm.
8 · The Ways of the Muslims
ਪੀਰ ਪਿਕੰਬਰ ਅਉਲੀਏ ਗਉਸ ਕੁਤਬ ਵਲੀਉਲਹ ਜਾਣੇ। ਸੇਖ ਮਸਾਇਕ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਦਰਿ ਦਰਿਵੇਸ ਵਖਾਣੇ। ਸੁਹਦੇ ਲਖ ਸਹੀਦ ਹੋਇ ਲਖ ਅਬਦਾਲ ਮਲੰਗ ਮਿਲਾਣੇ। ਸਿੰਧੀ ਰੁਕਨ ਕਲੰਦਰਾਂ ਲਖ ਉਲਮਾਉ ਮੁਲਾ ਮਉਲਾਣੇ। ਸਰੈ ਸਰੀਅਤ ਆਖੀਐ ਤਰਕ ਤਰੀਕਤਿ ਰਾਹ ਸਿਞਾਣੇ। ਮਾਰਫ਼ਤੀ ਮਾਰੂਫ ਲਖ ਹਕ ਹਕੀਕਤਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ। ਬੁਜਰਕਵਾਰ ਹਜਾਰ ਮੁਹਾਣੇ ॥੮॥
pīr pikambar aulīe gaus kutab valīulah jāṇe | sekh masāik ākhīan lakh lakh dar darives vakhāṇe | suhade lakh sahīd hoi lakh abadāl malaṅg milāṇe | sindhī rukan kalandarān lakh ulamāu mulā maulāṇe | sarai sarīat ākhīai tarak tarīkat rāh siñāṇe | mārafatī mārūph lakh hak hakīkat hukam samāṇe | bujarakavār hajār muhāṇe |8|
Muslim masters and prophets, saints and holy men of every rank — the friends of God are known. Sheikhs and elders are named, and hundreds of thousands of wandering holy men at every door. Hundreds of thousands become martyrs, and countless wandering dervishes of every order are met. The holy wanderers of Sindh, and countless scholars, preachers and teachers of the law. There is the sharia, the law they say to follow, and the seeker's path known by reason. Countless who know God inwardly, and the truth of it all, merged into His Command. Thousands of elders, and guides who steer souls.
9 · The Brahmin Lines
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਬਾਹਮਣ ਸਾਰਸੁਤ ਵਿਰਤੀਸਰ ਲਾਗਾਇਤ ਲੋਏ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਗਉੜ ਕਨਉਜੀਏ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਢੋਏ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲਖ ਸਨਉਢੀਏ ਪਾਂਧੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵੈਦ ਖਲੋਏ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਲਖ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਵੇਦ ਵੇਦੁਏ ਲੱਖ ਪਲੋਏ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲਖ ਕਵੀਸਰਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਭਾਟ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਉ ਬਖੋਏ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਅਭਿਆਗਤਾਂ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਲੈ ਕਨਸੋਏ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਸਉਣ ਸਵਾਣੀ ਹੋਏ ॥੯॥

How many Sarasvat Brahmins, keepers of family rites through the world; how many Gaur and Kanaujia Brahmins, living at pilgrim places and carrying their offerings; how many thousands of Sanaudhia, teachers, scholars and doctors standing by; how many thousands of astrologers, and reciters of the Veda past counting; how many thousands of poets, the Brahm-Bhatts who sing of Brahma; how many wandering beggars going door to door, catching whatever they hear; and how many keepers of omens and old lore.
10 · The Kshatriya Lines
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬਾਰਹੀ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਬਾਵੰਜਾਹੀ। ਪਾਵਾਧੇ ਪਾਚਾਧਿਆ ਫਲੀਆਂ ਖੋਖਰਾਇਣੁ ਅਵਗਾਹੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਚਉੜੋਤਰੀ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਸੇਰੀਣ ਵਿਲਾਹੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਹੋਇ ਚਕ੍ਰਵਰਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਦਰਗਾਹੀ। ਸੂਰਜਵੰਸੀ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਸੋਮਵੰਸ ਸੂਰਵੀਰ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ। ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਧਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਨ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹੀ। ਦਾਨੁ ਖੜਗੁ ਮੰਤੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ॥੧੦॥
kitaṛe khatrī bārahī ketaṛiān hī bāvañjāhī | pāvādhe pāchādhiā phalīān khokharāiṇ avagāhī | ketaṛiān chauṛotarī ketaṛiān serīṇ vilāhī | ketaṛiān avatār hoi chakravarat rāje daragāhī | sūrajavansī ākhīan somavans sūravīr sipāhī | dharam rāi dharamātamā dharam vīchār na beparavāhī | dān khaṛag mant bhagat salāhī |10|
How many Kshatriya warriors of the twelve houses, and how many of the fifty-two; the Pavadhe, the Pachadhia, the Phalia, the Khokhrain, deep in their family lines; how many of the Chaurotri, how many of the Serin and Vilahi; how many became divine descents, world-ruling kings honoured at court; the Sun line they are called, and the Moon line, brave warriors and soldiers; the Judge of right living, upright souls, thinking on their duty and never careless. Charity, the sword, the sacred word and devotion they praise.
11 · The Vaish Lines
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਵੈਸ ਵਖਾਣੀਅਨਿ ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਰਾਵਤ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ। ਤੂਅਰ ਗਉੜ ਪਵਾਰ ਲਖ ਮਲਣ ਹਾਸ ਚਉਹਾਣ ਚਿਤਾਰੀ। ਕਛਵਾਹੇ ਰਾਠਉੜ ਲਖ ਰਾਣੇ ਰਾਇ ਭੂਮੀਏ ਭਾਰੀ। ਬਾਘ ਬਘੇਲੇ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਬਲਵੰਡ ਲਖ ਬੁੰਦੇਲੇ ਕਾਰੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਭੁਰਟੀਏ ਦਰਬਾਰਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਦਰਬਾਰੀ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਗਣੀ ਭਦਉੜੀਏ ਦੇਸਿ ਦੇਸਿ ਵਡੇ ਇਤਬਾਰੀ। ਹਉਮੈ ਮੁਏ ਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੧੧॥

How many Vaish traders are told of, Rajputs and Ravats, thoughtful men; the Tuar, Gaur and Pavar in thousands, the Malan, Has and Chauhan remembered; the Kachvaha and Rathaur in thousands, the Ranas, Rais and great landholders; how many Bagh and Baghele, the mighty, and thousands of dark Bundele; how many Bhurtie, courtiers inside the courts; how many wealthy Bhadaurie, great and trusted in land after land. They die in pride, and never conquer their pride.
12 · The Trades and Clans
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਸੂਦ ਸਦਾਇਏ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਕਾਇਥ ਲਿਖਣਹਾਰੇ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਬਾਣੀਏ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਭਾਭੜਿਆਂ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੇ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਲਖ ਜਾਟ ਹੋਇ ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਛੀਂਬੇ ਸੈਸਾਰੇ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਠਾਠੇਰਿਆ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਲੋਹਾਰ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਤੇਲੀ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਹਲਵਾਈ ਬਾਜਾਰੇ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਲਖ ਪੰਖੀਏ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਨਾਈ ਤੈ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ। ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੋਤ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥੧੨॥

How many are called Sud, and how many Kayath the record-keepers; how many are Banias, how many Bhabras and goldsmiths; how many thousands are Jats, and how many the cloth-printers of the world; how many workers in brass, how many blacksmiths, thoughtful men; how many are called oil-pressers, how many sweet-makers of the market; how many thousands of Pankhi, how many barbers and pedlars. The clans of the four castes are past counting.
13 · The Many Sects
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਲਖ ਫਿਰਨਿ ਉਦਾਸੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਜੋਗੀਸੁਰਾਂ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੋਏ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ। ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਦਸ ਨਾਮ ਧਰਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਬਾਰਹ ਪੰਥ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਲਖ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਬਾਨਪ੍ਰਸਤ ਬਨਵਾਸੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਡੰਡ ਧਾਰ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਜੈਨੀ ਜੀਅ ਦੈਆਸੀ। ਛਿਅ ਘਰਿ ਛਿਅ ਗੁਰਿ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਛਿਅ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਭੇਸ ਅਭਿਆਸੀ। ਛਿਅ ਰੁਤਿ ਬਾਰਹ ਮਾਹ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਇਕੋ ਬਾਰਹ ਰਾਸੀ। ਗੁਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥੧੩॥

How many are called householders, and how many thousands wander as udasis, homeless holy men; how many yogi lords, how many became renouncers; those who renounce take ten names, and the yogis live in twelve paths; how many thousands of the highest 'swans', how many forest-dwelling hermits; how many carrying the staff, how many Jains, careful of every living thing; six houses and six teachers are named, six teachings and six kinds of dress practised; six seasons and twelve months, and yet one sun through the twelve signs. The Guru of gurus is the True Guru, who never dies.
14 · The Holy Ones
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਸਾਧ ਵਖਾਣੀਅਨਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਲਖ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਨਿਜ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਸਮਦਰਸੀਆਂ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲਖ ਬਿਬੇਕੀਆਂ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਦੇਹ ਬਿਦੇਹ ਅਕਾਰੀ। ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਬੈਰਾਗ ਸਵਾਰੀ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥

How many holy men are told of, doers of good in the sangat; how many thousands of saintly souls, how many keepers of their own devotion; how many free while still alive, who know God and think on God; how many who see everything with an equal eye, how many spotless worshippers of the Formless One; how many thousands who can tell true from false, how many in a body and yet beyond the body; walking in love, devotion and awe, dressed in calm meditation and freedom from clinging. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy throws off all pride.
15 · The Unholy
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲਖ ਅਸਾਧ ਜਗ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਚੋਰ ਜਾਰ ਜੂਆਰੀ। ਵਟਵਾੜੇ ਠਗਿ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਅਵਿਚਾਰੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਬੇਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਅਣਚਾਰੀ। ਸ੍ਵਾਮਿ ਧ੍ਰੋਹੀ ਵਿਸਵਾਸਿ ਘਾਤ ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਭਾਰੀ। ਬਿਖਲੀਪਤਿ ਵੇਸੁਆ ਰਵਤ ਮਦ ਮਤਵਾਲੇ ਵਡੇ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ। ਵਿਸਟ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਕੂੜੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੀ। ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਅੰਤਿ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੧੫॥

How many thousands of the unholy in the world — how many thieves, adulterers, gamblers; how many highway robbers and cheats, how many gossips, careless of everything; how many ungrateful, how many faithless and badly behaved; betrayers of their master, breakers of trust, false to the salt they ate, great fools; the debauched, keeping company with prostitutes, drunk on wine, great in vice; how many enemies of the good, how many false, dealers in lies. Without the perfect Guru, ruin at the end.
16 · The Many Peoples
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਸੁੰਨੀ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਈਸਾਈ ਮੂਸਾਈ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਹੀ ਰਾਫਜੀ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਮੁਲਹਿਦ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਈ। ਲਖ ਫਿਰੰਗੀ ਇਰਮਨੀ ਰੂਮੀ ਜੰਗੀ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਦਾਈ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਸਈਯਦ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਤੁਰਕਮਾਨ ਦੁਨਿਆਈ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਮੁਗਲ ਪਠਾਣ ਹਨਿ ਹਬਸੀ ਤੇ ਕਿਲਮਾਕ ਅਵਾਈ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਈਮਾਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਬੇਈਮਾਨ ਬਲਾਈ। ਨੇਕੀ ਬਦੀ ਨ ਲੁਕੈ ਲੁਕਾਈ ॥੧੬॥

How many are called Sunni, how many Christian and follower of Moses; how many Rafizi, how many counted as heretics; thousands of Franks, Armenians, Romans, warring enemies; how many called Sayyid, how many Turkoman of the world; how many Mughals and Pathans, Abyssinians and Kilmaks, unruly; how many faithful, how many faithless troublemakers. Good and evil cannot be hidden by any hiding.
17 · The States of Life
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਦਾਤੇ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਵੈਦ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਰੋਗੀ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਜੋਗੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਭੁਖੇ ਮਰਨਿ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਰਾਜੇ ਰਸ ਭੋਗੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਿਲੇ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਵਨਿ ਸੋਗੀ। ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਣੀ ਕਿਤੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਤੜੀ ਹੋਗੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਦਗਾਬਾਜ ਦਰੋਗੀ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋ ਜੋਗੀਸਰੁ ਜੋਗੀ ॥੧੭॥

How many givers and beggars, how many doctors and how many sick; how many in the ease of meeting, how many parted and apart; how many die of hunger, how many kings tasting every delight; for some the songs of joy, for some the weeping of grief; the world's coming and going — how much has been, and how much is still to come; how many truthful, how many deceivers and liars. Rare is the Gurmukh, the yogi of yogis.
18 · The Frailties of the Body
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਦਿਸਨਿ ਕਾਣੇ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਚੁੱਨ੍ਹੇ ਫਿਰਨਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਰਤੀਆਨੇ ਉਕਤਾਣੇ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਨਕਟੇ ਗੁਣਗੁਣੇ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਬੋਲੇ ਬੁਚੇ ਲਾਣੇ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਗਿਲ੍ਹੜ ਗਲੀ ਅੰਗਿ ਰਸਉਲੀ ਵੇਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੇ। ਟੁੰਡੇ ਬਾਂਡੇ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਗੰਜੇ ਲੁੰਜੇ ਕੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਾਣੇ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲੂਲੇ ਪਿੰਗੁਲੇ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਕੁੱਬੇ ਹੋਇ ਕੁੜਾਣੇ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਖੁਸਰੇ ਹੀਜੜੇ ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਗੁੰਗੇ ਤੁਤਲਾਣੇ। ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੇ ॥੧੮॥

How many are called blind, how many are seen with one eye; how many go about weak-sighted, how many dim and dazed; how many with flattened noses or speaking through the nose, how many deaf, unable to speak, or missing a limb; how many with swollen necks or growths on the body, passing their days in pain; how many missing a hand or an arm, or bald, crippled, or carrying leprosy; how many lame and unable to move, how many hunched and bent in pain; how many unable to father children, how many who stammer and lisp. Without the perfect Guru, only coming and going. (Bhai Gurdas counts the body's sufferings with pity, to show that everyone alike needs the Guru.)
19 · Kings and Their Courts
ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਪਤਿਸਾਹ ਜਗਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਮਸਲਤਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਜੀਰਾ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਉਮਰਾਉ ਲਖ ਮਨਸਬਦਾਰ ਹਜਾਰ ਵਡੀਰਾ। ਹਿਕਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਕੀਮ ਲਖ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਤਰਕਸ ਬੰਦ ਅਮੀਰਾ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਭੋਈ ਮੇਠ ਮਹਾਵਤ ਮੀਰਾ। ਲਖ ਫਰਾਸ਼ ਲਖ ਸਾਰਵਾਨ ਮੀਰਾਖੋਰ ਸਈਸ ਵਹੀਰਾ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲਖ ਜਲੇਬਦਾਰ ਗਾਡੀਵਾਨ ਚਲਾਇ ਗਡੀਰਾ। ਛੜੀਦਾਰ ਦਰਵਾਨ ਖਲੀਰਾ ॥੧੯॥

How many emperors in the world, how many ministers giving advice; how many thousands of nobles, and thousands of great officers; thousands of doctors in their skill, and how many lords who carry the quiver; how many servants in service, grooms, elephant-drivers and chiefs; thousands of attendants, camel-drivers, stable-masters and riders; how many thousands of flag-bearers, and cart-drivers driving their carts; and the mace-bearers and the doorkeepers standing by.
20 · Musicians and Servants
ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲਖ ਨਗਾਰਚੀ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਢੋਲੀ ਸਹਨਾਈ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਤਾਇਫੇ ਢਾਢੀ ਬਚੇ ਕਲਾਵਤ ਗਾਈ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਬਹੁਰੂਪੀਏ ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਲਖ ਭੰਡ ਅਤਾਈ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲਖ ਮਸਾਲਚੀ ਸਮਾ ਚਰਾਗ ਕਰਨਿ ਰੁਸਨਾਈ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਕੋਰਚੀ ਆਮਲੁ ਪੋਸ਼ ਸਿਲਹ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਬਦਾਰ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਬਾਵਰਚੀ ਨਾਨਵਾਈ। ਤੰਬੋਲੀ ਤੋਸਕਚੀ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥੨੦॥

How many thousands of drummers, how many players of drum and flute; how many troupes, minstrels and their children, and the trained court singers; how many mimics and jugglers, and thousands of jesters and clowns; how many thousands of torch-bearers, lighting the lamps of the gathering; how many armour-bearers, keepers of robes and weapons; how many polishers, how many cooks and bakers; and the servers of betel and the keepers of the wardrobe, all handsome.
21 · Craftsmen and Officials
ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਖੁਸਬੋਇਦਾਰ ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਰੰਗਰੇਜ ਰੰਗੋਲੀ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਮੇਵੇਦਾਰ ਹਨਿ ਹੁਡਕ ਹੁਡਕੀਏ ਲੋਲਣਿ ਲੋਲੀ। ਖਿਜਮਤਿਗਾਰ ਖਵਾਸ ਲਖ ਗੋਲੰਦਾਜ ਤੋਪਕੀ ਤੋਲੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਤਹਵੀਲਦਾਰ ਮੁਸਰਫ਼ਦਾਰ ਦਰੋਗੇ ਓਲੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਕਿਰਸਾਣ ਹੋਇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੀ ਅਤੁਲੁ ਅਤੋਲੀ। ਮੁਸਤੌਫੀ ਬੂਤਾਤ ਲਖ ਮੀਰਸਾਮੇ ਬਖਸੀ ਲੈ ਕੋਲੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਦੀਵਾਨ ਹੋਇ ਕਰਨਿ ਕਰੋੜੀ ਮੁਲਕ ਢੰਢੋਲੀ। ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮੋਲ ਅਮੋਲੀ ॥੨੧॥

How many perfume-makers, how many dyers of cloth; how many keepers of fruit, and drummers and players; thousands of attendants and valets, and gunners weighing out the cannon; how many treasurers, accountants and overseers in their rows; how many became farmers, farming past all measure; thousands of auditors and pursers, chamberlains and paymasters; how many became ministers, ruling and searching whole lands. Jewels and treasures, priceless beyond price.
22 · Merchants and Makers
ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਜਉਹਰੀ ਲਖ ਸਰਾਫ ਬਜਾਜ ਵਪਾਰੀ। ਸਉਦਾਗਰ ਸਉਦਾਗਰੀ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਕਾਸੇਰੇ ਪਾਸਾਰੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਪਰਚੂਨੀਏ ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਦਲਾਲ ਬਜਾਰੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਸਿਕਲੀਗਰਾਂ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਲਖ ਕਮਗਰ ਕਾਰੀ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆਂ ਕੁਮ੍ਹਿਆਰ ਲਖ ਕਾਗਦ ਕੁਟ ਘਣੇ ਲੂਣਾਰੀ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਦਰਜੀ ਧੋਬੀਆਂ ਕਿਤੜੇ ਜ਼ਰ ਲੋਹੇ ਸਿਰ ਹਾਰੀ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਭੜਭੂੰਜੇ ਭਠਿਆਰੀ ॥੨੨॥

How many jewellers, thousands of bankers, cloth-sellers and traders; merchants in their trade, perfume-makers, brass-workers, pedlars; how many grocers, how many market brokers; how many armourers, and thousands of skilled craftsmen; how many potters, thousands of paper-makers and salt-workers; how many tailors and washermen, how many labourers carrying gold and iron on their heads; how many who parch the grain and tend the fires.
23 · The Humblest Trades
ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਕਾਰੂੰਜੜੇ ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਦਬਗਰ ਕਾਸਾਈ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਮੁਨਿਆਰ ਲਖ ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਚਮਿਆਰੁ ਅਰਾਈ। ਭੰਗਹੇਰੇ ਹੋਇ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਬਗਨੀਗਰਾਂ ਕਲਾਲ ਹਵਾਈ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਭੰਗੀ ਪੋਸਤੀ ਅਮਲੀ ਸੋਫੀ ਘਣੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ। ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਕਹਾਰ ਲਖ ਗੁਜਰ ਲਖ ਅਹੀਰ ਗਣਾਈ। ਕਿਤੜੇ ਹੀ ਲਖ ਚੂਹੜੇ ਜਾਤਿ ਅਜਾਤਿ ਸਨਾਤਿ ਅਲਾਈ। ਨਾਵ ਥਾਵ ਲਖ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੨੩॥

How many basket-makers, how many leather-workers and butchers; how many thousands of bangle-makers, how many shoemakers and gardeners; how many hemp-dressers, distillers and firework-makers; how many who eat hemp and poppy, addicts and those who keep clear, a great hidden crowd; how many thousands of water-carriers, and thousands of Gujjars and Ahirs counted up; how many thousands of sweepers — caste, no-caste and low-caste all named. Their names and their places, their worth past all reckoning.
24 · All Become Gurmukh
ਉਤਮ ਮਧਮ ਨੀਚ ਲਖ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨੀਚਹੁ ਨੀਚ ਸਦਾਏ। ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪਾ ਖਾਕੁ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ। ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਏ। ਮਿਠਾ ਬੋਲਣ ਨਿਵ ਚਲਣੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਭਲਾ ਮਨਾਏ। ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਣ ਨਿਮਾਣਾ ਪਾਏ। ਚਲਣੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਅਜਾਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਆਸਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ਵਲਾਏ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ॥੨੪॥੮॥
utam madham nīch lakh guramukh nīchahu nīch sadāe | pairī pai pā khāk hoi guramukh gurasikh āp gavāe | sādhasaṅgat bhau bhāu kar sevak sevā kār kamāe | miṭhā bolaṇ niv chalaṇ hathahu de kai bhalā manāe | sabad surat liv līṇ hoi daragah māṇ nimāṇā pāe | chalaṇ jāṇ ajāṇ hoi āsā vich nirās valāe | guramukh sukh phal alakh lakhāe |24|8|
High, middle and low in their thousands — and yet the Gurmukh calls himself the lowest of the low. Falling at the feet, becoming the dust of the feet, the Gurmukh-Gursikh loses himself. In the sangat, in awe and love, the servant does the work of service. Sweet in speech, humble in walking, giving with his own hand, wishing everyone well. Mind merged in the Word, he wins honour as the humble one in the Court. Knowing he must go, becoming like one who knows nothing, he lives wanting nothing in the middle of wanting. The Gurmukh's fruit of joy shows you the One no eye can see.
