Chapter 3

The Spring Has Come

Seven ghazals of the crying-out — 'will someone save me?' — and of the dawn: the sleepy-eyed Beloved before whom the morning sun is shamed, the spring that arrives when the Guru comes, and the vow never again to sleep through the hour of remembrance.

Someone shield me from His ravishing, wine-dark eyes, and guard me from that mouth sweet as chewed sugar. I grieve the moment let slip in carelessness, the chance that passed me by. My heart is torn by the world's quarrel of faith and unfaith — I seek only one who will save me at the Beloved's door. The proud, playful pretenders of love have plundered the world; I too was robbed by them, and I cry out for rescue. How can Goya keep silent under the dagger-lashes of the Master? Still I call out — will someone save me?

As the drunkard wants only the ruby cup, and the thirsty only cool sweet water, so the seeker wants only one thing: the company of the Beloved's devotees, steeped in light — that alone is all the fellowship he needs. With one smile a person can make this world a garden; what need of a gardener, once he has glimpsed the heavenly One? One loving glance from You takes my breath away, yet still I beg for Your mercy — that is my deepest need. Goya says: in both worlds I have no one but You; I want my very heart and soul only for You.

Your sky-dark hair is a veil drawn over the morning, like the dawn sun eclipsed beneath black cloud. When my moon rose from His daytime sleep, it was as though He put the morning sun to shame. When You came, Guru, with sleep-heavy eyes from the bed of love, the morning sun was abashed to match itself against Your face. When the drowsy dawn lifts its veil, its blessed coming brings light to the whole world. The worldly spend their lives in one long night's forgetting — but for me, says Goya, to sleep through these dawn hours is now forbidden.

This playful eye takes away my breath, my heart, my faith — and this same living eye lifts me out of sorrow. One lock of His hair could bring the world to ruin, and one of His eyes could bless the whole world with plenty. Goya prays: may my heart become the dust of my Beloved's feet, and may His playful eye steer me toward the Eternal. Whoever has tasted the delight of that laughing eye will never look at the narcissus again. And whoever has glimpsed that sprightly eye even once, says Goya, has every doubt and illusion swept away.

Come to your senses and rejoice — the new spring is here; my Beloved, the Guru, has come, and my heart is at peace. His splendour has sunk so deep into my eye that wherever it turns, it sees only the Beloved's face. I am the slave of my eyes; I go where they gaze — what say have we on this path of love? Word came that Mansur, crying 'I am the Truth,' was seen going to the scaffold tonight. Tell all the flowers to bloom — this good news came from a thousand singing nightingales. My tongue is struck dumb with shame, my heart undone: who could ever tell the whole tale of my boundless love for You? I keep tangling myself in the curls of Your hair, Guru, for only there does my yearning mind find rest.

What medicine can a doctor give for one sick with love? How can a guide show the way when we ourselves are lame? All His grace shines plain and unveiled — but under the cloak of ego, what can even a moon-serene face do for us? For one whose mind has no stillness, what use is a quiet corner of any mansion? How can you reach the Beloved's court without a teacher of love? What can a guide do if you carry no longing? O Goya: so long as you can line your eyes with the dust of the Guru's feet, you will see the Creator's grace — what other use has any collyrium?

When the east wind combs through the curls of His hair, it forges strange chains for my maddened mind. From the dawn of creation we have not grasped the meaning of this body — that the Lord made it for His own dwelling. The lover's heart soon becomes the Beloved's; whoever is at one with the Beloved becomes, head to foot, all heart and soul. Why run after every mean man for a crust of bread? You know the greed for a single grain makes a prisoner. O Goya, tell not Laila's story to any maddened mind — I go mad myself just hearing of Majnun; such a tale fits a soul crazed with love like mine.
