The first Guru, Guru Nanak, shone with the true light of God, and taught the world what it means to trust God with a whole heart. He raised high the flag of everlasting truth and drove away the darkness of not-knowing. From the beginning of time until now, every soul counts itself the dust at his door. God Himself sings his praise, and even the highest angels cannot find words for his greatness. Set beside the light of his command, a million suns and moons sink into shadow.
His word is the highest word in both worlds, and his kindness reaches every sinner. The angels in God's court count it a blessing simply to kiss the dust of his feet. Nand Lal even reads the letters of his name as a promise — of God the Giver, the caretaker and friend, the Endless One, and the greatest of teachers. His holy poverty raised the love of a simple, God-turned life to its very height, and his open-handed giving spread through both worlds.

His holy poverty lifts the head of the saintly life to its full height, and in his eyes every person should be ready to give their life for truth and for good deeds. High or low, angel or onlooker — all long only for the dust of his feet. When God Himself is praising him, what could I ever add? How could I even set foot on the road of his praise? Millions of angels are his followers, and millions on this earth are his students too.
ਹਮਾ ਜਬਰੂਤੀਆਂ ਫ਼ਿਦਾਇ ਊ ਹਮਾ ਲਾਹੂਤੀਆਂ ਬਪਾਇ ਊ ॥ ੧੮ ॥ ਹਮਾ ਨਾਸੂਤੀਆਂ ਮਲਾਇਕਿ ਊ ਜਲਵਾ-ਅਸ਼ ਦਾਂ ਤਹਿਤੋ ਫ਼ੌਕਿ ਨਿਕੂ ॥ ੧੯ ॥ ਜਾ-ਨਸ਼ੀਨਾਨਿ ਊ ਅਜ਼ ਊ ਲਾਇਕ ਜ਼ਿਕਰਿ ਤੌਸੀਫ਼ਿ ਜ਼ਾਤ ਰਾ ਲਾਇਕ ॥ ੨੦ ॥ ਅਬਦ ਆਬਾਦ ਕਦਰੋ ਜਾਹੋ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਂ ਬਰ ਅਫ਼ਰਾਜ਼ਦ ਜ਼ਿ ਯੱਕ ਦਿਗਰ ਸੁਬਹਾਂ ॥ ੨੧ ॥ ਮੁਰਸ਼ਦੁਲ-ਆਲਮੀਂ ਸ਼ੁਦਸ ਚੂ ਖ਼ਿਤਾਬ ਅਜ਼ ਅਨਾਯਾਤਿ ਹਜ਼ਰਤਿ ਵਹਾਬ ॥ ੨੨ ॥
hamā jabarūtīān fidāi ū hamā lāhūtīān bapāi ū | 18 | hamā nāsūtīān malāik ū jalavā-asha dān tahito fauk nikū | 19 | jā-nashīnān ū aza ū lāik zikar tausīf zāt rā lāik | 20 | abad ābād kadaro jāho nishān bar afarāzad z yakk digar subahān | 21 | murashadula-ālamīn shudas chū khitāb aza anāyāt hazarat vahāb | 22 |
The powers of the unseen worlds give themselves for him; the angels of the world of light stand at his feet. The people of this earth are his own, and his light shines on every lip. Those who keep his company grow wise, and begin to speak of God's glory. Their honour and their name last forever, for the pure Creator raises them above all others. And so the Endless One gave him a title: 'Guru of both the worlds' —
ਗੁਫ਼ਤ ਮਨ ਬੰਦਾ ਓ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮਿ ਤੂ ਅਮ ਖ਼ਾਕਿ ਅਕਦਾਮਿ ਖ਼ਾਸੋ ਆਮਿ ਤੂ ਅਮ ॥ ੨੩ ॥ ਬਾਜ਼ ਚੂੰ ਹਮਚੁਨੀਂ ਖ਼ਿਤਾਬ ਆਮਦ ਮਤਵਾਤਰ ਚੁਨੀਂ ਜਵਾਬ ਆਮਦ ॥ ੨੪ ॥ ਕਿ ਮਨਮ ਦਰ ਤੂ ਗ਼ੈਰ ਤੂ ਕਸ ਨੀਸਤ ਹਰ ਚਿਹ ਖ਼ਾਹਮ ਕੁਨਮ ਹਮਾ ਅਦਲੀਸਤ ॥ ੨੫ ॥ ਰਾਹਿ ਜ਼ਿਕਰਮ ਬ ਆਲਮੇ ਬਿਨੁਮਾ ਬ-ਹਮਾ ਸ਼ੋ ਜ਼ਿ ਵਸਫ਼ਿ ਮਨ ਗੋਯਾ ॥ ੨੬ ॥
gufat man bandā o ġulām tū am khāk akadām khāso ām tū am | 23 | bāza chūn hamachunīn khitāb āmad matavātar chunīn javāb āmad | 24 | ki manam dar tū ġair tū kas nīsat har chih khāham kunam hamā adalīsat | 25 | rāh zikaram ba ālame binumā ba-hamā sho z vasaf man goyā | 26 |
Then Nanak said: 'I am Your servant, I am Your slave, the dust of the feet of all Your people, the great and the ordinary alike.' And when he bowed so low, again and again the answer came back to him: 'I am within you, and there is no one but you for Me. Whatever I wish, I do — and all that I do is just. Go, carry My remembrance into the whole world, and make every heart pure with My praise.'
ਦਰ ਹਮਾ ਜਾ ਪਨਾਹੋ ਯਾਰਿ ਤੂ ਅਮ ਯਾਵਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੋ ਖ਼ਾਸਤਗਾਰਿ ਤੂ ਅਮ ॥ ੨੭ ॥ ਹਰ ਕਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤੂ ਬਰਤਰੀਂ ਦਾਨਦ ਅਜ਼ ਦਿਲੋ ਜਾਂ ਬ-ਵਸਫ਼ਿ ਮਨ ਖ਼ਾਨਦ ॥ ੨੮ ॥ ਮਨ ਊ ਰਾ ਜ਼ਾਤਿ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਨੁਮਾਇਮ ਬਾਜ਼ ਐਹਦਿ ਮਨ ਸਖ਼ਤਗੀਰ ਬਰ ਕੁਨ ਸਾਜ਼ ॥ ੨੯ ॥ ਗਿਰਦਿ ਆਲਮ ਬਰਆ ਵਾ ਹਾਦੀ ਸ਼ੌ ਕਿ ਜਹਾਂ ਗ਼ੈਰਿ ਮਨ ਨਿਯਰਜ਼ਦ ਜੌ ॥ ੩੦ ॥
dar hamā jā panāho yār tū am yāvarī bakhasho khāsatagār tū am | 27 | har ki nām tū baratarīn dānad aza dilo jān ba-vasaf man khānad | 28 | man ū rā zāt khud numāim bāza aihad man sakhatagīr bar kun sāza | 29 | girad ālam baraā vā hādī shau ki jahān ġair man niyarazad jau | 30 |
'Everywhere you go I am your refuge and your friend; I give you My help, for I am on your side. Whoever holds your name highest is, in truth, praising Me with heart and soul. I will show you My own Being — so let your hard road be made smooth. Go through the world and be its guide, for without Me the world is not worth a single grain.'
ਦਰ ਹਕੀਕਤ ਮਨਮ ਚੂ ਰਾਹ-ਨੁਮਾ ਤੂ ਜਹਾਂ ਰਾ ਬਪਾਇ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਪੈਮਾ ॥ ੩੧ ॥ ਹਰ ਕਿ ਰਾ ਖ਼ਾਹਮ ਵ ਸ਼ਵਮ ਹਾਦੀ ਅਜ਼ ਤੂ ਦਰ ਦਿਲ ਦਰ-ਆਰਮਸ਼ ਸਾਦੀ ॥ ੩੨ ॥ ਵਾਂ ਕਿ ਗੁਮਰਾਹ ਸਾਜ਼ਮਸ਼ ਜ਼ਿ ਗਜ਼ਬ ਨਭਰਸਦ ਅਜ਼ ਹਦਾਇਤਿ ਤੂ ਬ-ਰੱਬ ॥ ੩੩ ॥
dar hakīkat manam chū rāha-numā tū jahān rā bapāi khud paimā | 31 | har ki rā khāham va shavam hādī aza tū dar dil dara-āramasha sādī | 32 | vān ki gumarāh sāzamasha z gazab nabharasad aza hadāit tū ba-rabb | 33 |
'In truth, since I am your guide, walk the earth on your own two feet. Whomever I choose and lead, I fill his heart with joy. But whoever, in My justice, I let wander away will not reach Me — not even by your teaching.'
ਸ਼ੁਦਾ ਗੁਨਰਾਹ ਆਲਮੇ ਬੇਮਨ ਸਾਹਿਰਾਂ ਗਸ਼ਤਾ ਅੰਦ ਜਾਦੂਇ ਮਨ ॥ ੩੪ ॥ ਮੁਰਦਗਾਂ ਰਾ ਕੁਨੰਦ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਾ ਹਮੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗਾਂ ਰਾ ਬਜਾਂ ਕੁਸ਼ੰਦਾ ਹਮੀ ॥ ੩੫ ॥ ਆਤਿਸ਼ੇ ਰਾ ਕੁਨੰਦ ਆਬ ਵਸ਼ ਬਰ ਸਰੇ ਆਬ ਜ਼ਨੰਦ ਆਤਿਸ਼ ॥ ੩੬ ॥ ਹਰ ਚਿਹ ਖ਼ਾਹੰਦ ਮੀ-ਕੁਨੰਦ ਹਮਾਂ ਜੁਮਲਾ ਜਾਦੂ ਫ਼ਨ ਅੰਦ ਬਰ ਸਾਮਾਂ ॥ ੩੭ ॥ ਰਾਹਿ ਸ਼ਾਂ ਰਾ ਨੁਮਾ ਬ-ਸੂਇ ਮਨ ਕਿ ਪਜ਼ੀਰੰਦ ਗੁਫ਼ਤਗੂਇ ਮਨ ॥ ੩੮ ॥ ਗ਼ੈਰ ਜ਼ਿਕਰਮ ਬ-ਜਾਦੁਏ ਨਭਰਵੰਦ ਜੁਜ਼ ਦਰਿ ਮਨ ਬਜਾਨਬੇ ਨਭਰਵੰਦ ॥ ੩੯ ॥ ਕਿ ਜ਼ਿ ਦੋਜ਼ਖ਼ ਸ਼ਵੰਦ ਰੁਸਤਾ ਹਮੇ ਵਰਨਾ ਉਫ਼ਤੰਦ ਦਸਤ-ਬਸਤਾ ਹਮੇ ॥ ੪੦ ॥
shudā gunarāh ālame beman sāhirān gashatā and jādūi man | 34 | muradagān rā kunand zindā hamī zindagān rā bajān kushandā hamī | 35 | ātishe rā kunand āb vasha bar sare āb zanand ātisha | 36 | har chih khāhand mī-kunand hamān jumalā jādū fan and bar sāmān | 37 | rāh shān rā numā ba-sūi man ki pazīrand gufatagūi man | 38 | ġair zikaram ba-jādue nabharavand juza dar man bajānabe nabharavand | 39 | ki z dozakha shavand rusatā hame varanā ufatand dasata-basatā hame | 40 |
The world had lost its way without him. His remembrance works wonders: it brings the dead heart back to life, and stills the one who lives only in sin; it turns fire to water, and cools the flames again with water; it does whatever it wills. 'Turn their path toward Me,' says God, 'so they take up My word, seek no charm but My remembrance, and go to no door but Mine — so they are lifted out of sorrow, and do not fall with their hands tied.'
ਕਾਫ਼ ਤਾ ਕਾਫ਼ ਆਲਮੇ ਜੁਮਲਾ ਦਾਅਵਤ ਆਮੋਜ਼ੋ ਜ਼ਾਲਮੇ ਜੁਮਲਾ ॥ ੪੧ ॥ ਰੰਜੇ ਫ਼ਰਹਤ ਜ਼ਿ ਮਨ ਨ ਮੀ-ਦਾਨੰਦ ਹਮਾ ਅਜ਼ ਗ਼ੈਰਿ ਮਨ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨੰਦ ॥ ੪੨ ॥ ਔਜੁਮਨ ਮੀ-ਕੁਨੰਦ ਵ ਅਜ਼ ਅੰਜਮ ਬਰ ਸ਼ੁਮਾਰੰਦ ਰੂਜ਼ਿ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਓ ਗ਼ਮ ॥ ੪੩ ॥ ਬਰ ਨਿਗਾਰੰਦ ਨਹਿਸੋ ਸਾਆਦ ਹਮੇ ਬਾਜ਼ ਗੋਇੰਦ ਕਬਲੋ ਬਾਅਦ ਹਮੇ ॥ ੪੪ ॥ ਨੀਸਤ ਸ਼ਾਂ ਰਾ ਬ-ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਇਸਤਿਕਲਾਲ ਕਾਲ ਦਾਨੰਦ ਜੁਮਲਗਾਂ ਬੇ-ਹਾਲ ॥ ੪੫ ॥
kāfa tā kāfa ālame jumalā dāavat āmozo zālame jumalā | 41 | rañje farahat z man na mī-dānand hamā aza ġair man pareshānand | 42 | aujuman mī-kunand va aza añjam bar shumārand rūz shādī o ġam | 43 | bar nigārand nahiso sāād hame bāza goind kabalo bāad hame | 44 | nīsat shān rā ba-zikar isatikalāl kāl dānand jumalagān be-hāl | 45 |
From end to end the world had grown cruel and lost. Without him people find no true joy and no peace; they gather to read the stars, counting out days of sorrow and gladness, writing down lucky signs and unlucky ones — never steady in remembering God, speaking like people confused and adrift.
ਰੂ ਨੁਮਾ ਜੁਮਲਾ ਰਾ ਸੂਇ ਫ਼ਿਕਰਮ ਕਿ ਨਦਾਰੰਦ ਦੋਸਤ ਜੁਜ਼ ਜ਼ਿਕਰਮ ॥ ੪੬ ॥ ਤਾ ਹਮਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਸ਼ਾਂ ਨਿਕੋ ਸਾਜ਼ਮ ਖ਼ਾਤਰਿ ਸ਼ਾਂ ਜ਼ਿ ਨੂਰ ਬਿਤਰਾਜ਼ਮ ॥ ੪੭ ॥ ਮਨ ਤੁਰਾ ਆਫਰੀਦਮ ਅਜ਼ ਪਏ ਆਂ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਵੀ ਰਹਿਨੁਮਾ ਬ-ਜੁਮਲਾ ਜਹਾਂ ॥ ੪੮ ॥ ਹੁੱਬਿ ਗ਼ੈਰ ਅਜ਼ ਜ਼ਮੀਰਿ ਸ਼ਾਂ ਬਜ਼ਦਾਇ ਹਮਗਨਾਂ ਰਾ ਤੂ ਰਾਹਿ ਰਾਸਤ ਨੁਮਾਇ ॥ ੪੯ ॥
rū numā jumalā rā sūi fikaram ki nadārand dosat juza zikaram | 46 | tā hamā kār shān niko sāzam khātar shān z nūr bitarāzam | 47 | man turā āpharīdam aza pae ān ki shavī rahinumā ba-jumalā jahān | 48 | hubb ġair aza zamīr shān bazadāi hamaganān rā tū rāh rāsat numāi | 49 |
'Turn their faces toward My remembrance,' says God, 'so they call nothing a friend but the thought of Me. Then I will set their lives right and brighten their hearts with My light. I made you for this alone: to be the guide of the whole world. Clear the love of otherness from their hearts, and show them the one true road.'
ਸ਼ਾਹ ਗੁਫ਼ਤਾ ਚਿ ਲਾਇਕ ਆਨਮ ਕਿ ਦਿਲਿ ਜੁਮਲਾ ਬਾਜ਼ ਗਰਦਾਨਮ ॥ ੫੦ ॥ ਮਨ ਕੁਜਾ ਵ ਚੁਨੀਂ ਕਮਾਲ ਕੁਜਾ ਮਨ ਕਿਹ ਵ ਫ਼ੱਰੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਜਲਾਲ ਕੁਜਾ ॥ ੫੧ ॥ ਲੇਕ ਹੁਕਮਤ ਕਸ਼ਮ ਬਜਾਨਿ ਬਦਿਲ ਨਸ਼ਵਮ ਯੱਕ ਜ਼ਮਾਂ ਅਜ਼ੋ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ॥ ੫੨ ॥ ਹਾਦੀ ਓ ਰਹਿਨੁਮਾਇ ਜੁਮਲਾ ਤੂਈ ਰਹਿਬਰੋ ਦਿਲ-ਗਿਰਾਮੀਇ ਜੁਮਲਾ ਤੂਈ ॥ ੫੩ ॥
shāh gufatā chi lāik ānam ki dil jumalā bāza garadānam | 50 | man kujā va chunīn kamāl kujā man kih va farre zulajalāl kujā | 51 | lek hukamat kasham bajān badil nashavam yakk zamān azo ġāfil | 52 | hādī o rahinumāi jumalā tūī rahibaro dila-girāmīi jumalā tūī | 53 |
Nanak said: 'How am I fit for so great a task — to turn the hearts of all toward the truth? What am I beside such greatness? I am lowly before the splendour of the Endless One. And yet Your command I take upon my heart and soul, and I will not forget it for a single moment.' For you, O Guru, are the guide and captain of all; you lead the way, and you shape the hearts of every soul.
