The second Guru, Guru Angad, first became Guru Nanak's most devoted student — and then grew into a Guru worthy of devotion himself. His faith shone brighter than the daylight. He and Guru Nanak were truly one soul in two bodies: two lamps lit to brighten people's hearts, two sparks of a single flame that could burn away all but the truth. He was the treasure and the leader of God's own court, an anchor for all who are dear to God. ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਆਂ ਮੁਰਸ਼ਦੁਲ-ਆਲਮੀਂ ਜ਼ਿ ਫ਼ਜਲਿ ਅਹਦ ਰਹਿਮਤੁਲ ਮਜ਼ਨਬੀਨ ॥ ੫੫ ॥ ਦੋ ਆਲਮ ਚਿ ਬਾਸ਼ਦ ਹਜ਼ਂਰਾਂ ਜਹਾਂ ਤੁਫੈਲਿ ਕਰਮਹਾਇ ਓ ਕਾਮਾਰਾਂ ॥ ੫੬ ॥ ਵਜੂਦਸ਼ ਹਮਾ ਫ਼ਜਲੋ ਫ਼ੈਜ਼ਿ ਕਰੀਮ ਜ਼ਿ ਹੱਕ ਆਮਦੋ ਹਮ ਬਹੱਕ ਮੁਸਤਕੀਮ ॥ ੫੭ ॥ ਹਮਾ ਆਸ਼ਕਾਰੋ ਨਿਹਾਂ ਜ਼ਾਹਿਰਸ਼ ਬਤੂਨੋ ਇਯਾਂ ਜੁਮਲਗੀ ਬਾਹਿਰਸ਼ ॥ ੫੮ ॥
gurū aṅgad ān murashadula-ālamīn z fajal ahad rahimatul mazanabīn | 55 | do ālam chi bāshad hazanrān jahān tuphail karamahāi o kāmārān | 56 | vajūdasha hamā fajalo faiz karīm z hakk āmado ham bahakk musatakīm | 57 | hamā āshakāro nihān zāhirasha batūno iyān jumalagī bāhirasha | 58 |
Guru Angad is the guide of both worlds; by God's grace he is a blessing even to those who had gone astray. Not two worlds only — thousands of worlds find their freedom through his giving. His whole being is the treasure of God's kindness: he came from God, and he stands firm in God. He is always present, whether seen or unseen, here and there, within and without.
ਚੂ ਵੱਸਾਫ਼ਿ ਊ ਜ਼ਾਤਿ ਹੱਕ ਆਮਦਾ ਵਜੂਦਸ਼ ਜ਼ਿ ਕੁਦਸੀ ਵਰਕ ਆਮਦਾ ॥ ੫੯ ॥ ਜ਼ਿ ਵਸਫ਼ਸ਼ ਜ਼ਬਾਨਿ ਦੋ ਆਲਮ ਕਸੀਰ ਬਵਦ ਤੰਗ ਪੇਸ਼ਸ਼ ਫ਼ਜ਼ਾਇ ਜ਼ਮੀਰ ॥ ੬੦ ॥ ਹਮਾਂ ਬਿਹ ਕਿ ਖ਼ਾਹੇਮ ਅਜ਼ ਫ਼ਜਲਿ ਊ ਜ਼ਿ ਅਲਤਾਫ਼ੋ ਅਕਰਾਮ ਹੱਕ ਅਦਲਿ ਊ ॥ ੬੧ ॥ ਸਰਿ ਮਾ ਬਪਾਇਸ਼ ਬਵਦ ਬਰ ਦਵਾਮ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਰਸ਼ ਦਿਲੋ ਜਾਨਿ ਮਨ ਮੁਸਤਦਾਮ ॥ ੬੨ ॥
chū vassāf ū zāt hakk āmadā vajūdasha z kudasī varak āmadā | 59 | z vasafasha zabān do ālam kasīr bavad taṅg peshasha fazāi zamīr | 60 | hamān bih ki khāhem aza fajal ū z alatāfo akarām hakk adal ū | 61 | sar mā bapāisha bavad bar davām nishārasha dilo jān man musatadām | 62 |
To praise him is to praise God; his nature is a page from the book of the holy. The tongues of both worlds cannot praise him enough, and the wide courtyard of the soul is still too small to hold his glory. So it is best that we ask, from his grace and God's justice, this one gift: that our heads bow forever at his feet, and our heart and soul stand always ready to give themselves for him.
