Chapter 1

Chapter 1 · The Dawning of the Panth

The poet bows low and asks for help to sing his Guru — then tells how the Timeless One, grieving a lost world, called a new and shining path into being through Guru Gobind Singh.

One Creator. Victory to the Wondrous Lord-Guru (Waheguru).

The Poet's Prayer

ek samai hit so hit ucharī hit chit lāi | prabh rachanā aise rachī so tum kaho sunāi |1|

One day, in love, a loving heart set its whole mind on love and asked: 'How did the Lord fashion all this creation? Tell it, and let me hear.'

sunikai upajī tab hī man mai, baranau upamā prabh kī kahīai | mat thorī sī thorī hūn te chhin ek su, terī dayāl dayā chahīai | kahibo binatī kar jor doū, har kījai soū ju parai sahīai | tumarī upamā tum hī baranau, kar āpan te kar mo gahīai |2|

Hearing this, a longing rose in me — to sing the praise of the Lord. But my understanding is small, smaller than small; for even a single moment, O Merciful One, I beg your mercy. With both palms joined I make my prayer: Lord, lay on me only what I am able to bear. Your glory — you alone can sing it; take my hand in your own, and lead it.

mat thorī upamā ghanī, kih bidh baranī jāi | binau karai kab jor kara, satigur hohu sahāi |3|

My wit is small, your glory vast — how could it ever be told? With palms pressed together the poet prays: True Guru, be my help.

namasakār kar jor kai karat jīv aradās | rache granth tumarī kathā, karahu su budh pragās |4|

Bowing low, hands joined, this soul makes its plea: I would compose a book of your story — kindle in me the light of understanding.

gur sobhā yā granth ko dharo su nām bichār | sunat kahit gat hot hai, man antar uridhār |5|

'Gur Sobha' — the Glory of the Guru — let this book be thoughtfully named. To hear it and to speak it lifts the soul; hold it deep within the heart.

sammat satrah sai bhae barakh aṭhāvanā bīt | bhādav sud pandas bhaī, rachī kathā kar prīt |6|

When the year seventeen hundred fifty-eight had turned, on the bright full-moon day of the month of Bhadon, this telling was made in love.

satigur kī upamā kaho divas rain bīchār | dījai sudh budh kripā kar karanahār karatār |7|

Day and night I would ponder and sing the True Guru's praise — grant me, in your mercy, clear sense and understanding, O Maker, O Creator.

How the Guru's Grace Found Me

tav prasād gur upadese | janam janam ke miṭe andese | tab yah kīṭ patit man āyo | bhaī kripā gur mārag pāyo |8|

By your grace the Guru taught me, and the dread of lifetime upon lifetime fell away. Then into this lowly worm's heart the wish arose; mercy came, and the Guru set my feet upon the path.

tab man mīt moh im bhākhī | pragaṭ kaho satigur kī sākhī | jo prabh gur ko bachan sunāe | kahiho kathā suno chit lāe |9|

Then the friend within my heart spoke to me: 'Tell openly the witness of the True Guru.' The words the Lord and Guru gave — I shall tell that story now; listen with your whole heart.

niramal panth jot ujiārī | dīragh prabal sabal at bhārī | jab gur kachhuik budh pragāsī | dayā karī pūran abināsī |10|

A spotless path (Panth), its light ablaze — long-lasting, strong, mighty, immense. When the Guru kindled even a little understanding in me, the Perfect and Imperishable One had shown his mercy.

satigur sobhā ih te kaho | tih pratāp paramapad laho | pūran punn pare tih saranā | amar bhae phir janam na maranā |11|

So I tell the glory of the True Guru; by his splendour the highest state is won. Those of perfect merit who take his shelter are made deathless — never again to be born, never again to die.

From Nanak to Gobind Singh

ab satigur ke nām bakhāno | param purakh tih te pahichāno | prathame satigur nānak bhae | aṅgad amaradās pragaṭae |12|

Now I name the True Gurus — know the Supreme Being through them. First came Guru Nanak; then Angad and Amardas shone forth.

tih te rāmadās gur jāno | arajan har gobind pachhāno | tih te gurū bhae har rāi | pher gurū har krisan kahāi |13|

After them, know Guru Ramdas; then recognize Guru Arjan, and Guru Hargobind. After them came Guru Har Rai, and then the one called Guru Har Krishan.

pragaṭ bhae gur teg bahādar | sagal srisaṭ pai jākī chādar | karam dharam kī jin pat rākhī | aṭal karī kalijug mai sākhī |14|

Then Guru Tegh Bahadur shone forth, whose sheltering mantle covers all creation — who guarded the honour of faith and righteous living, and set down an unshakable witness in this dark age.

sagal srisaṭ jā kā jas bhayo | jih te sarab dharam bachayo | tīn lok mai jai jai bhaī | satigur paij rākh im laī |15|

His praise rang through all creation; by him the whole of faith was saved. Through the three worlds rose the cry 'Victory, victory!' — so the True Guru kept the honour of dharma whole.

tilak janeū ar dharamasālā | aṭal karī gur bhae dayālā | dharam het prabh purah sidhāe | gur gobind siṅgh kahilāe |16|

The frontal mark, the sacred thread, the house of worship — the merciful Guru made them safe. For the sake of righteousness the Master passed on to his eternal home; and then arose the one called Guru Gobind Singh.

gur teg bahādar te gur gobind siṅgh bhayo tāraṇ taraṇe | tai lok bikhai jai kār bhayo, pragaṭayo gur ād kriā karaṇe | dusaṭ biḍāraṇ sant ubāraṇa, sab jag tāraṇ bhav haraṇe | jai jai jai dev karai sab hī, tih ān pare gur kī saraṇe |17|

From Guru Tegh Bahadur came Guru Gobind Singh, the vessel that carries souls across. Through the three worlds rose the shout of victory; the Guru shone forth, the doer of first and primal deeds — scatterer of the cruel, shelter of the holy, ferry of the whole world, remover of the fear of birth and death. Every being cries 'Victory, victory, victory!' and comes to fall at the Guru's door.

The Command to Raise a Path

tih bakhasīs karī karatāre | prabhū bāk im kahyo bichāre | tum merā ik panth chalāvo | sumat deh logan samajhāvo |18|

The Creator gave him this blessing, and the Lord spoke these weighed words: 'You — carry forward a path (Panth) that is mine; give people good sense, and lead them to understand.'

jo prānī jam mag te ḍarai | sun upades saran tuh parai | jo prabh panth rache rach prīt | hai tih saṅg moh ih gīt |19|

'Whatever mortal dreads the road of Death, hearing this teaching will take shelter with you. The path the Lord shapes, and shapes in love — with that path this song of mine belongs.'

'Those I made for devotion's sake — many seized powers and made a great stir in the world. Each set up worship of his own, and each grew tangled in his own self.'

ham so ih bidh karai karārī | nisadin usatat karah tihārī | bachan bisār rahe bikh māhī | tin ko mokh mukat im nāhī |21|

'So they contend stubbornly against me, saying, "Night and day we sing your praise" — yet, forgetting the Word, they linger on in poison; and for such as these there is no freedom, no release.'

The Proud Who Could Not Know the One

banāyo bināse upāyo khapāyan | karanahār karatār jonī bhulāyan | kaī jot jodhā baḍe āp kīne | tinai srisaṭ mai ān sarabos dīne |22|

He fashions and dissolves, raises up and lays waste; the Maker, the Creator, lets his creatures wander through birth after birth. Many a shining, mighty champion he himself made great, and gave into their hands all things in the world.

ude asat lau rāj rājā kahāe | lage dhayān aurai su āpai kahāe | baḍe rāchhasai jor jodhā balīan | chalīan halīan dharīan sudīan |23|

From sunrise to sunset they were hailed as kings over kings; others bent their worship toward them, and they let themselves be called divine. Great titans, warriors of force and might, marched and shook the earth — and were laid low in their turn.

nahī ek jāne baḍe garab kārī | tian māribe kāj chaṇḍī sudhārī | kīe chhār sansār mai sobh hoī | kahai tāh ehī su dūjā na koī |24|

They knew not the One, those great architects of pride; to strike them down the Lord raised up Chandi, the Power. They were turned to ash — and so his glory was shown in the world — though each of them had said, 'I alone am this; there is no other.'

kīe rūp bhārī baḍe chhatradhārī | soī bharam bhule kiye juddh bhārī | tayai mārabe kāj bisanan hakāre | dhare ān sansār autār sāre |25|

He made mighty forms, great crowned rulers; and those same ones, lost in delusion, waged their great wars. To strike them down he summoned Vishnu, who came and took, one after another, all his incarnations into the world.

tinai mār kai chhār kai kai risāe | bhaī sobh jag mai su āpai kahāe | mahān braham rūpan su brahame kahāyo | braham bhed rañch ek tinahe na pāyo |26|

Having slain them and scattered them to dust, they grew proud; glory filled the world, and they let themselves be called supreme. One took the form of the great Brahm and was named Brahma — yet not a single grain of the mystery of God did he ever grasp.

mahādev devant devā kahāyo | gayo bhūl soū su liṅge pujāyo | kite rāj rikhan bhae chhatr dhārī | kīe tāh simmrit bhaī pūj sārī |27|

Mahadev was hailed as god of gods; he too lost his way, and let himself be worshipped as the linga. Many a royal sage became a crowned lord; the old scriptures were composed in their name, and all worship was turned toward them.

The Path That Cannot Be Hidden

jite sarab bhekhan | tite sarab pekhan | na pāyo alekhan | yahai bāt dekhan |28|

All the many robes of religion — I have looked upon them all, and none has found the One beyond all reckoning. This is the truth I see.

'As many as I sent into the world let themselves be called supreme. The true word I gave them never took hold, never spread as it should.'

'The reason I have made you is this alone: raise up my path, for the work of righteousness.'

yahai kai paṭhāyo | tabe srisaṭ āyo | bhae kes dhārī | dharī pher sārī |31|

For this he was sent, and so he came into the world; he became the keeper of the unshorn hair (kes), and set the whole of dharma right once more.

ḍhule prem pāsā | ajāib tamāsā | kīe bāk bhāre | bhae juddh sāre |32|

The dice of love were cast — a wondrous, marvellous play. Weighty words were spoken, and all the battles came to pass.

bhire siṅgh sūre | kiye kāj pūre | achal nīv ḍārī | ṭaregī na ṭārī |33|

The lion-hearted Singhs fought, and brought the work to completion. An immovable foundation was laid — it will not be shifted, however one tries to shift it.

yahai bāt jāno | ridai sāch āno | kiyo panth aisā | kahiyo āp taisā |34|

Know this for certain; hold the truth in your heart. Such a path was made — and it came to be exactly as the Lord himself had said.

It cannot be hidden, though they try to hide it; it cannot be lessened, though they try to lessen it. Day upon day it grows the greater, and its victory-drum resounds.

suno ghor tā kī | milai tāh jhākī | sareṇ rāh āvai | soī sūkh pāvai |36|

Hear its thunder; whoever seeks it is granted a glimpse. Whoever comes by the road of refuge — that soul, and that soul alone, finds peace.

The Khalsa Is Born

kaī bharam bhūle bharam mai bhulāne | kaī saran āe kiye tāh gayāne | kite jīv āī kahā chāl kīnī | dayā dhār karatār yah budh dīnī |37|

Many, lost in illusion, were led astray in illusion; many came to the shelter and were given true knowing. What journeys the soul has made, what turns it has taken! — the Creator, in his mercy, granted it this understanding.

doū hāth jore saran tāh pāī | kīo nām khālas khalāsī batāī | sarab sūkh pāe dīe rāj rāje | suno benatī rāj rājādhirājai |38|

With both hands joined they took his shelter; he named them Khalsa — the pure, the Lord's very own — and declared them set free (their khalasi). They found every happiness, and he made kings of them. Hear now my prayer, O King of kings, Emperor over emperors.

The Guru's Prayer to the Timeless One (Akal Purakh)

sidak mor sābūt majabūt kījo | bharanahār karatār yah dān dījo | karo drisaṭ aisī su toyan nihāro | katho bāk bānī su tatan bichāro |39|

'Make my faith whole and strong; O Sustainer, O Creator, grant me this gift. Turn on me such a glance that I may behold you, and let me speak words of truth and ponder the essence of things.'

The Poet's Vow to Sing

sadā ek jotan tisai sāch jāno | rahau tāh saranī na dūjai bhramāno | kaho sobh terī yahai dev ! kījai | ji mo pai kahāvai te mo dān dījai |40|

Know that one ever-living Light to be the Truth; abide in its shelter, and stray not after any second. 'Let me sing your glory — grant me this, O Lord — and give me the gift of whatever you would have me tell.'

kahau divas rainā kaho sarab māse | kaho jāgate sovate sās grāse | su āde jugāde jage jot jākī | abe ant lau hoigī ant tākī |41|

Let me tell it day and night, tell it through all the months; tell it waking and sleeping, with every breath and every morsel — of the One whose Light has burned from the beginning, from before the ages began, and will burn on to the very end, itself without end.

Here ends the first chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the Praise of the Dawning of the Panth. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
