You Are the Guru
jo charit prabh purakh ke, tā ko karat bichār | jathā sakat upamā kahata, man antar uridhār |1|42|
The wondrous deeds of the Lord-Person — Guru Gobind Singh — I now set my mind to tell. As far as my strength allows I sing his praise, holding him deep within my heart.
ād ant tih purakh kī, navatan kathā apār | baran baran kab kab rahata, koū na pāvat pār |2|43|
The beginning and the end of that Person, and his ever-fresh story, are boundless. Poet after poet has told and told it, yet none has ever found its far shore.
agam purakh kī agam kahānī | gur kripā te kachhuk jānī | tih pratāp kathā tin kahon | satigur paras padārath lahon |3|44|
The unreachable tale of the Unreachable Person — by the Guru's grace I have come to know a little. I tell the story of his majesty, and by the True Guru's touch I gather up its treasure.
sat sarūp rūp gun bhārī | baran chihan upamā ujiārī | tā sam avar kavan kab dharai | tumarī sobhā tume prabh sarai |4|45|
His form is Truth itself, rich in beauty and virtue; his marks and his praise shine radiant. What other could a poet set beside him? Your glory, Lord, only you can fulfil.

You are Guru Nanak, you are Guru Angad; you are Guru Amardas, and Ramdas too. You are Guru Arjan, you are Guru Hargobind; you are Guru Har Rai, and Har Krishan too. In the ninth Sovereignty — Guru Tegh Bahadur — you kept the flame alight in this dark age; you are the sheltering mantle over all the world. And the tenth Sovereign, you are Sri Guru Gobind Singh — you are the Lord himself, come to lift the world across.
jago sarab pāik tuhī sarab lāika, tuī lok nāik tuhī hoi āyo | karai bain vāchā ihī kāj rāchā, karai panth sāchā su te ko sunāyo | kiyo sāt sate tihī raṅg rate, dayī srisaṭ mate kupate khapāyo | tihī nām lāge bharam bhār bhāge, prabh prem pāge imai bhed pāyo |6|47|
You are the servant of all and worthy of all; you are the leader of the worlds, come just as you are. You gave the word and set yourself to this one work — to raise a true path (Panth) and make it known to all. You made the true ones true, dyed in your own colour; you gave the world wisdom and undid the crooked. Whoever holds to your Name, the weight of their illusions flees; steeped in the Lord's love, they come upon this secret.
Paonta, and the Gathering Storm
mādhovāl suhāvanā, satigur ko asathān | līlā anik anek bidhi, kautak karat bihān |7|48|
Madhoval was lovely — the True Guru's abode (this was Anandpur's first name). In many, many ways his wondrous play unfolded, and his marvels filled the passing days.
ketak baras bhānt ih bhae | des pānvaṭe satigur gae | jamanā tīr mahal banavāe | karat ānand prabh man bhāe |8|49|
Some years passed in this way; then the True Guru went to the land of Paonta. On the bank of the Yamuna he had a palace built, and dwelt there in joy, as it pleased his heart.
anik bhānt līlā tah karī | phate sāh sun kai man dharī | bahut kop man māh basāyo | phauj banāi juddh kau āyo |9|50|
In many ways his play unfolded there. When Fateh Shah — the raja of Srinagar in Garhwal — heard of it, he took it ill; great anger lodged in his mind, and he raised an army and came for war.
bahu prabal dal jor kai sainā saṅg apār | nikaṭ ān ḍerā diyo, khabar bhaī darabār |10|51|
Gathering a very powerful force, a boundless army beside him, he came and pitched camp close by; and word of it reached the Guru's court.
The Battle Is Joined
bhae asavār saṅgrām kau āp hī, siṅgh gobind tih ṭhaur āe | ḍhaṅk kī ghor jaise bhaī ṭhaur taha, bajat nisān muhare suhāe | ān kai khet pai dekh chaturaṅg saba, morache bāṭ kai misal lāe | bajī hai bher karanāi saranāi saba, sune te sūr hoi lāl āe |11|52|
Guru Gobind himself mounted for battle and came to that place. Like the roar of thunder it rose there, drums and standards sounding grandly before them. Coming onto the field and seeing all the four kinds of force, he divided the ranks and drew up the lines. Kettledrums and horns and clarions all rang out — hearing them, the warriors flushed red with valour and came on.
phate sāh dal sāj kai, kharā bhayo tih thān | saṅg rāv rājā ghane, man mai kīo gumān |12|53|
Fateh Shah arrayed his force and stood upon that ground; with many chiefs and rajas beside him, pride swelled in his heart.
ketak dal ih phauj kau, kīno sāh sumār | ek gharī ko mār mai, hui hai sakal sabār |13|54|
So great did Shah reckon this army of his that in a single hour's fighting, he thought, the whole [enemy] would be finished.
phate sāh ut dal maṇḍayo, ite sāh saṅgrām | bīr pañch jodhā balī, jin jīte saṅgrām |14|55|
On that side Fateh Shah drew up his host; on this side stood Shah Sangram — Sango Shah, the Guru's own cousin — with five brave warriors, mighty in war.
kop kai sūr duhūn or te dhāi kai, ān saṅgrām mai sasatr bāhe | gire savār ih bhānt bhav chāl raṇa, mār hī mār kai ān gāhe | nachat hai bhūt baitāl bhairon tahān, gidh maṇḍalāt raṇ mai suhāhe | ān kai joganī patr pūran bharajo, achav kai udar tin ke aghāe |15|56|
Raging, the warriors on both sides charged and came together, wielding their weapons in the fight. Horsemen fell in the terrible churn of the field; crying 'strike, strike,' they closed and were cut down. Ghosts and spectres and Bhairavs danced there, and vultures wheeled over the field of war. So heavy was the slaughter that — in the old poet's dread image — the yoginis came and filled their bowls, and were sated.
The Valour of the Brave
jaimal kop chaṛajo raṇ mai, kar mai barachhī tirachhī gah līnī | phauj mai dhāi parajo khunasāi kai, ketan ke ur antar dīnī | mār liye asavār kite ar pel dayī chaturaṅg navīnī | dhūm parī sagare raṇ mai, ab ek savār yahai gat kīnī |16|57|
Jaimal — Jeet Mall — rose in fury on the field, gripping his spear slantwise in his hand. Enraged, he fell upon the host and drove it through the breast of many. He slew many a horseman and pushed back the fresh four-fold force. The din of battle rose over the whole field — such was the work of one lone horseman.
raṇ mai saj kai im loh kiyo, na kiyo tih moh mahā man kau | jim sāraṅg māh mataṅg parai, na ḍarai kar lobh kachh tan kau | raṇ mai im dhūm karī at hī, mano khelat kānar phāgan kau | ih bhānt gulāl gulāl liye kari, jāt jamāt ke ḍāran kau |17|58|
Armed for the field, he dealt his steel and kept no fondness for his own great self — as a moth flies into the lamp, fearless, caring nothing for its body. Such a tumult he raised on the field that it seemed Krishna was playing Holi, flinging red gulaal upon the gathered ranks — save that here the red was blood.
māhurī chand karavār sambhār kai, tum as raṇ māh dīno | ān kai sūr jo vār tā pai karai, pakar kai tāh tih mār līno | bhānt ih sūr ketān māre tahān, āp ne jīv ko bhai na kīno | ek ko mār kai doi ṭukaṛe karai, doi ko rūp chaturaṅg chīno |18|59|
Mahuri Chand — Sango Shah's third brother — took his sword in hand and dealt such blows upon the field. Any warrior who came and struck at him, he seized and slew. So many did he kill there, fearing nothing for his own life — cutting one down into two pieces, another into four.
karī im jaṅg sun gaṅg rāman vahī, teg kar mai laī beg dhāyo | det asavār ke sīs pai ān kai, karat dui ṭuk bhui māh pāyo | mār chaturaṅg chaturaṅg ketī karī, bhūm loṭai parī bhai dikhāyo | dhūm aisī parī bhāj yāhī gharī, kāl ko rūp im sūr āyo |19|60|
Hearing of this fight, Ganga Ram — the fourth brother — took his sword in hand and swiftly charged. Bringing it down on a horseman's head, he split him in two and cast him to the earth. He cut down force after force; the ground lay strewn with the fallen, a fearful sight. Such a rout arose that men fled that very hour — the warrior had come like the very form of Death.
lāl chand ān kai | kamān bān tān kai | kiyo su juddh jān kai | bhalī bhaī bhalī bhaī |20|61|
Lal Chand came on, drew his bow and arrow, and fought with skill and knowing — 'well done, well done!' rose the cry.
sarūp rūp dhāraī | anek satr ṭāraī | karai su mār māraī | pukār ī pukār ī |21|62|
In splendid form he drove off many a foe; he struck and struck again, and cries rose up on every side.
As a farmer reaps his field, so he mowed them down and scattered them; he spared not a single life — he cut them down, he cut them down.
He made steel ring on steel and left no living foe; the warrior's stride upon the field was glorious — a wonder, a wonder to behold.
māhar kāhar kop kai jīv mai, sasatr lai hāth mai beg dhāe | ek so ek balavant sūrā sarasa, chhinak mai mār ran mai girāe | loth pai loth tah ḍār ketī daī, sron ke sambh yon umaṇḍ āe | parat hai nīr gambhīr bhārī kahūn, milat hai nīr ik tīr jāe |24|65|
Mahuri and the fierce ones, raging in their hearts, took their weapons in hand and swiftly charged. Warrior stronger than warrior, splendid, in an instant they struck foes down upon the field. Corpse upon corpse they piled — and in the poet's grim image, rivers of blood came surging up, deep water flowing here, one stream joining another as it ran.
man mai at dhār kiyo at sāra, samio aisī bār nahīn kar āvai | kop kai krodh so kāḍh kai miān te, ketan ke sir kāṭ lai āvai | bheṭ kiyo prabh kī tab hī, ar kop kai juddh ko pher sidhāvai | aise prakām kiyo dayā rām su, daun jo dekhayo su mahā ran pāvai |25|66|
Holding firm resolve within, he did great deeds — a time that comes not to every man. Blazing with wrath he drew his blade from the scabbard and struck the heads from many. He laid them as an offering before the Lord, then, still burning, turned again to the fight. Such feats did Daya Ram — the priest who fought like Drona of old — perform, that whoever saw them beheld a mighty war.
lai kutakā kar mai kripālā, sambhār kai khān hajāt ke mārajo | aisī daī sir mai tih ke, mano torajo pahār gadān so ḍārajo | māto mataṅg mahā balavān hanayo chhin mai ran māh pachhārayo | ek daī su daī uh ke, phir dūsarī so ik or saṅghārayo |26|67|
Kripal — the Udasi mahant — took his wooden staff in hand and, steadying himself, struck down Hayat Khan. Such a blow he gave upon his head, as if a mountain were shattered and hurled down like a mace. The elephant-strong warrior was slain, felled on the field in an instant. He gave one stroke, then a second, and struck down another on the far side.
lai barachhī kar mai tab hī, mano dekh kuraṅg ko siṅgh jo dhāyo | mār hakār bidār diyo dala, pelat pelat pel chalāyo | ṭūṭ kai sasatr pare sab hī kar lai jam dhār kitān ko ghāyo | ghāil sār su mār bhayo, su nand hī chand gobind bachāyo |27|68|
Spear in hand, Nand Chand then charged — as a lion springs on sighting a deer. Crying 'strike!' he shattered the host, pressing and pressing it back. When all his weapons broke he seized the foe bare-handed and dealt death like Yama. Wounded at last by steel, he fell — and Guru Gobind himself preserved him.
khaṛag sambhār lalakār khatrī chaṛayo, jāi raṇ mai parayo at suhāyo | loth pai loth tih ḍār ketī daī, chhinak mai anik bidh loh pāyo | bān aise bahe, ghāv tan mai bhae, sūr tan mai sahe bhūm āyo | anik racchhā karī āp tāhī gharī, kāl kripāl aise bachāyo |28|69|
Sword in hand, with a war-cry the Khatri warrior charged and fell splendidly upon the field. Corpse upon corpse he piled, in an instant dealing steel in many ways. Such arrows flew that wounds covered his body; the warrior bore them all and sank to the earth. Yet greatly was he shielded in that hour — the Merciful Timeless One saved him so.
sāhib chand gindan jo, man mai kar ros tabai uṭh dhāyo | mār hī mār kahai mukh te, karavār sambhār kite dal ghāyo | jo karavār so vār sambhār kai juddh ko sūr kai sāmuhe āyo | tāhū ko vār bidār hakār kai āpane vār so tāh girāyo |29|70|
Sahib Chand, a warrior Sikh, anger rising in his heart, sprang up and charged. 'Strike, strike!' he cried from his lips, and gripping his sword he cut down much of the host. Whoever came before him, blade raised and ready to fight, him he parried, shattered, and with his own stroke cast down.
sāh saṅgrām ne kām aise kiyo, bhīm te jān gun chār bhāre | bhale khān khunī hane, chhār kīne ghane, hoi kai anamane so sidhāre | gajai siṅgh saṅgrām mai bhānt tākī kaho, mrigan ko mār nāhar ḍakāre | tahān kop kai krodh so ān saṅgrām mai, nikaṭ tih ānakai sasatr dhāre |30|71|
Shah Sangram did such deeds that he seemed to carry four times the might of Bhima. He slew good Khans and laid many to dust, and went on, heavy of heart. He roared like a lion on the field — how to tell it? — as a lion belches its cry after slaying deer. There, blazing with wrath, he came into the fight and wielded his weapons close upon them.
The Tide Turns
krodh so kop kai ān harī chand ne pakar gun bān aise prahāre | bhalī bhānt so khet mai bān asathir kīo, sasatradhārī hane bhūm ḍāre | sasatr sambhār kai jīt malan hane, ghane han har chand ih bhānt māre | bīr tā ke bane vār bāhe ghane, surag lokan tabai te sidhāre |31|72|
In wrath and fury Hari Chand, the Raja of Handur, came, gripped his bow, fitted his arrows and let fly such shots. Well he steadied his aim upon the field and struck the armed men down to the ground. Taking up his weapons, Hari Chand slew Jeet Mall — Jaimal — and killed many more this way. The brave ones about him dealt many blows in return, and the fallen then departed to the heavenly realms.
gire bīr bīran | dhare bhār bhīran | lage bān tīran | adhīran bidāran |32|73|
Warrior fell upon warrior; the press of the throng bore down; arrows and shafts struck home; the reckless were torn apart.
bajai sār sāre | bhajai chanigiāren | kaṛakke kamānan | na bānan samāre |33|74|
All the steel clanged; sparks flew from it; the bows cracked and twanged; the arrows could not be numbered.
chhuṭai top kopan | kaī sūr sokhan | milai tāh mokhan | su kokhan ujāre |34|75|
The cannon burst forth in wrath; many warriors were consumed; release came to them in death; and homes were left desolate.
soī kām āyo | tinai sūr ghāyo | surage sidhāyo | kiyo loh bhāre |35|76|
He too gave his life in the work; the warriors struck him down; he departed to heaven — so heavy was the clash of steel.
je sūre dal mai hute, phaujan ke siradār | je jūjhe sūjhe sabai, bājaje sār apār |36|77|
The warriors who were in the host, the captains of the armies — all who fought and were seen to fall, upon whom the boundless steel had rung.
bhāj kai sāh pahāṛ tāhī samai, saṅg lai bīrīān beg dhāyo | bhājaje ḍaḍhavālīā saṅg sīpāh lai, chalat lai tīr gun te chalāyo | rāv chandelīā chhor saṅgrām ko, hāb lai sasatr sailī sidhāyo | achhe paṭhān saṅgrām bhārī kiyo, jīv apanā diyo nām pāyo |37|78|
At that hour Fateh Shah of the hills fled, taking his warriors and running swiftly. The Dadhwal rajputs fled too, taking their soldiers, loosing arrows from their bows as they went. The Chandel chief — Bhim Chand of Bilaspur — left the battle, gathered his arms and slipped away. But the brave Pathans fought a heavy fight, gave up their lives, and won a lasting name.
kop nijābat khān tabai kar mai gah vār phirāvat āyo | sāh kharo saṅgrām tahān, tih ko ur ān kai vār lagāyo | sāh sambhār hakār tabai tin ko han kai raṇ māh girāyo | bīran vār karai tin ke, tab jūjhat sāh prabh pur dhāyo |38|79|
Then Najabat Khan — a Pathan who had deserted the Guru — came whirling his blade in wrath. Sango Shah stood firm in the fight; the Khan came upon his breast and struck. But Shah rallied, raised his war-cry, struck him down and cast him to the ground. As the enemy warriors struck at him, Shah, still fighting to the last, went home to the Lord's city — and was martyred.
The Guru Takes the Field
saṅgo kā prabh ne dharayo nānv sāh saṅgrām | ih prakām aise kīo, tab pāyo yah nām |39|80|
The Lord had named Sango 'Shah Sangram' — the King of Battle. He did such deeds of valour that he made the name his own.
jujjh kai sāh saṅgrām suragai gayo, sasatr sambhār prabh āp dhāyo | gahe gun bān ghamasān ko jānakai, chhuṭayo gambhīr ik tih girāyo | bahur sambhār te vār aisā kiyo, bhīkhanan khān ke mukhan lāyo | bachayo paṭhān pai khet bāhan rahayo, ar ik tīr te tāh ghāyo |40|81|
When Shah Sangram, fighting, had gone to heaven, the Lord himself took up his weapons and charged. Fitting an arrow to his string, knowing the fury of the field, he loosed one deep shot and felled a foe. Steadying himself again, he made such a stroke that it struck Bhikhan Khan full in the face. The Pathan still lived and held the field — so with another arrow the Guru struck him down.
bānan son prabh jī tabai mārayo bhīkhan khān | ar bīr jāke hute rupe chahūn dis ān |41|82|
With his arrows the Lord then slew Bhikhan Khan; and the warriors who were with the Guru stood firm, drawn up on all four sides.
harī su chand ān kai | kamān bān tān kai | nihār bān bāhio | prabh kopā na āio |42|83|
Hari Chand came on, drew his bow and arrow, took aim and loosed the shaft — but it did not reach the Lord.
It grazed the ear and passed; it did no harm. He loosed a second arrow, steadying himself and taking careful aim.
chilat māh lagio | divāl pār bagio | chubhī su chiñch rañchayo | prabh purakh bañchayo |44|85|
It struck the coat of mail, passed through the horse's strap; its tip pricked but a little — and the Lord-Person was spared.
bichār bār sār ī | kamān bān dhār ī | chalāi tīr mārio | su dūt ko nihārio |45|86|
Judging it the time to strike, the Guru took up his bow and keen-edged arrow; he loosed the shaft and struck — for he had marked the wicked one.
anek bīr dhāv hī | apār bān lāv hī | harī su chand mārio | samet sāth ṭārio |46|87|
Many warriors charged, loosing countless arrows. The Guru slew Hari Chand, and drove off him and all his company.
bache su ant bhajayo | prabh nisān bajayo | anand ghor bājayo | prabh duār chhājayo |47|88|
Those who survived fled at last. The Lord's battle-drum rang out; a great drum of joy resounded; and the Lord's court was crowned with glory.
Victory, and the Founding of Anandpur

The battle won, joy and gladness rose, and all came and sang Gobind's praises: 'Blessed, blessed, Lord, is your Name that we have taken — you conquered the wicked and sounded the victory-drum. Great warriors, unconquered and unafraid — with a single glance you slew them all. Victory rang through all fourteen worlds.' And victorious, Guru Gobind Singh returned.
jīt ke khet prabh ānakai pānvaṭe, kūch ko sāj maṅgāi līno | bhār baradār tayār kīno sabai, lād asabāb kai kūch dīno | ān kahilūr mai āp tāhī samai, ānand pur bāndh bisrām kīno | sūr sīgār bedār kābir dae, rīt yah bhānt kai kai patīno |49|90|
Winning the field, the Lord came to Paonta and called for the gear to march; all the baggage was made ready, loaded, and the march set out. Coming then into Kahlur — the Bilaspur hills — at that very time he founded Anandpur and made his rest there, honouring the brave and the watchful, and so set the ways of his court.
ketak din ketak barasa, tih pur gae bihāi | santan kī racchhā karī, dūtan mārio dhāi |50|91|
Some days, some years, passed by in that city of Anandpur. He guarded the saints, and struck down the wicked who came against them.
