Chapter 3

Chapter 3 · The Battle of Nadaun

The battle of Nadaun, where the Guru stood beside the hill rajas against the Mughal commander's demand for tribute.

The Rajas Call for Help

rājan ke hit kārane, kiyo juddh im jān | kathā juddh nādavaṇ ko, baranat tāh biān |1|92|

For the sake of the rajas this battle was fought — know it so; the tale of the Battle of Nadaun I now set forth in words.

mīān khān kī taraph te, alaph khān siradār | ān nādavaṇ mai rahio, kīnī dhūm apār |2|93|

On behalf of Mian Khan — an officer of the emperor Aurangzeb — Alaf Khan the commander came and encamped at Nadaun, and raised a great commotion.

bhīm chand kahalūrīā, huto rāv ik jān | tih so tih kī nah banī, rachayo judh ghamasān |3|94|

Bhim Chand of Kahlur was one of the hill chiefs; things did not stay well between him and the Khan, and a fierce battle took shape.

des des ke rāv saba, līne tinah hakār | satigur ko kīnā likhā, dayā karo karatār |4|95|

He summoned the chiefs of every land; and to the True Guru he sent a letter: 'Show your mercy, Lord — come to our aid.'

The Battle of Nadaun

phauj sīgār kai āp tāhī samai, judh ke kāj tih ṭhaur dhāe | ek so ek balavant sūrā sarasa, bhire tih ṭhaur ḍaṅkā bajāe | bhayo saṅgrām parakām jodhān ke, bhire ih bhānt dal anik ghāe | tupak sambhār kai āp tāhī samai, sūr ketān tih ṭhaur dhāe |5|96|

Arraying his force, at that time the Guru hastened to that place for the work of battle. Warrior upon splendid warrior clashed there, sounding the battle-drum. A mighty war of champions arose; the hosts closed and many were struck down. Taking up their muskets then, warriors without number rushed to that place.

dūtan ke dal at bikaṭa, nikaṭ pahuche ān | tab tuphaṅg kar te tajī, gah līne gun bān |6|97|

The wicked host, most fierce, drew near; then the Guru set the musket aside and took up his bow and arrow.

dhanakh sambhār lalakār tāhī samai, kāl ke rūp bānan prahāre | anik jodhā hane anik hoi anamane, anik taj khet khete sidhāre | anik loṭai parai, anik bhājai gharai, anik ḍar basat ar shasatr ḍāre | hutī ik bār ujār kaṭakī parī, bhāj kai khān tā mai padhāre |7|98|

Taking up his bow with a war-cry, the Guru — like the very form of Death — let fly his arrows. Many warriors he slew, many were unnerved, many left the field and fled elsewhere; many rolled fallen, many ran for home, many in fear cast down their goods and their weapons. In a single onslaught the army was scattered and undone, and the Khan fled away into the rout.

sasat sambhār lalakār ghan jo karī, mār hī mār kai sūr dhāe | bhajio jo khān ik bār kī oṭ lai, baiṭh tih ṭhaur phir juddh pāe | bān golī chalī, rain āpī bhalī, bhāj kai khān tā te sidhāe | alaph khānān aramān rākhio nahīn, āpane jor ke tān lāe |8|99|

The warriors took up their arms with war-cries and charged, crying 'strike, strike.' The Khan who had fled took cover for a time, then sat and fought again. Arrows and bullets flew; night came kindly on; and the Khan slipped away from there. Alaf Khan kept no hopes now, for all the strength he had strained.

juddh jīt tāhī samai navarasā ke taṭ ān | pāñch doi ar ek dina, rahe tahān im jān |9|100|

The battle won, the Guru came at that time to the bank of the Navrasa river; five and two and one — eight days — he stayed there, know it so.

The Road Home

paur paur dekhī ṭhaura, rājan ke asathān | bidā bhae tāhī samai satigur purakh sujān |10|101|

Place by place he saw the sites, the abodes of the hill rajas; then, at that time, the wise True Guru-Person took his leave.

nikaṭ gānv alasūn ke tabai pahuche ān | tāh samai aise kahio lūṭ lehu ih thān |11|102|

He came near the village of Alsun — whose Ranghar men had long preyed on the pilgrim sangats; and at that time he gave the order: 'Take back this place from them.'

ān alasūn mai sūr aise rupe, pakar kai sasatr aise chalāe | pare jo jāi saṅgrām aise kiyo, chhinak mai anik ketān ghāe | mār kete liye aur bhāje sabai, chhoḍ dhan dhām aise sidhāe | chalat hai bān gun jān bhārī prabala, baje hain bhānt aisī batāe |12|103|

Coming into Alsun, the warriors stood firm and wielded their weapons; they fell upon the fight and in an instant struck down many. Some they slew, and all the rest fled, abandoning their wealth and homes. The arrows flew, mighty and strong from the string — such, it is told, was the manner of their striking.

phate kiyo alasūn ko, bājajo tabal nisān | gobind siṅgh āe tabai, pur ānand subh thān |13|104|

Victory was won at Alsun; the drums and standards sounded. Then Guru Gobind Singh returned to Anandpur, that blessed place.

Here ends the third chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the Battle Fought for the Sake of the Rajas. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
